The New Mistress Fuca: Part 4 Dinner and Diatribe
The first day of being the new Mistress Fuca moves swiftly, the day soon turning to night as the night brings forth unexpected company.
Warnings: None
A/N: Hey dudes, I'm back, yeah even I didn't think it'd happen, but yeah. Apologies for the extremely long wait. I don't know if there's anyone reading this anymore but I'll try to be more regular. Thanks for reading!

After parting from the little boy she turned to her husband, “He seems like a sweet boy.”
“Stay away from him, he doesn’t need to be distracted from his studies.” He stated harshly before stalking away.
Standing still, watching him walk away she merely tilted her head before straightening her spine before walking purposefully towards her quarters. ‘Fine, if he’s going to be so rude then I might as well ignore him.’
QingQing trailed behind her mistress in silence, wondering about the harsh exchange between the couple.
Once they reached her quarters, she ordered QingQing to fetch the ledgers that the Madam had sent her. Reading through the ledgers was a taxing task but once she completed going through the most recent ones, she told QingQing to gather the head-maids and the head-eunuchs.
The task was swiftly completed and a line of servants stood before her, heads bowed in respect.
“Good morning, everyone. You must be wondering why I have called you here.”
She was met with silence, before she continued, “I have been reading the household accounts and I must say, they’re extremely well-maintained. Which one of you wrote these accounts?”
“It was me, Young Mistress,” an old voice answered as one of the senior maids stepped forward.
“They’re very thorough, which I appreciate,” she said, motioning towards the maid who answered as QingQing delicately placed a piece of silver within the maid’s hands.
“Now, you must have heard that Madam Fuca has put me in-charge of the accounts for this month, so from now on you will report to me about any and all purchases made, even the smallest ones,” she said smiling, sipping on her tea before giving them more instructions and dismissing them.
Madam Fuca had been running the household with a lax hand, whereas Erqing though a tyrant, was adept at keeping the books in order, which made her work both easier and harder. The servants would now be cautious about what they did but on the other hand they’d be more honest in fear of being punished.
She sighed, leaning against her chair as she sipped her tea, planning what she’d do next.
~
The night came quickly as she found herself alone within their chambers. The room was cold and desolate, a pristine room with no inhabitants. She slowly entered the room, lighting the lamps as she smiled, settling before the small table in the center of the room, opening the dishes that QingQing had bought her from the kitchen.
A small feast of steamed tofu flavored with chicken broth, meat stewed with cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and a blend of herbs along with steamed bamboo shoots and jasmine rice spread over the table.
The mouth-watering scents wafted around the room, making her eager to dig in. She took a few bites of the meat and rice, the flavors tingled against her tastebuds as she took another bite from her portion. Her attention was quickly drawn away from her food when she heard the familiar sound of the door sliding open. Her husband stood at the entrance, a calm look on his face as he took in her startled expression.
“You’re here,” he said.
“Well, where else would I be? This is my room, is it not?”
“Technically it’s my room, you’re just staying in it.”
“Technically, it’s my room, since I was here first.”
“That’s not how it works,” he said, frustrated at her childishness
“Well, that’s how it is. So, since this is MY room, what brings you here, to MY room.”
“Well, I had come to MY room to have dinner, but I suppose you’ve already started then,” he said, sitting down unceremoniously before her as he took one of the extra bowls as he started serving himself.
“Wha- that’s my food!” she shrieked indignantly as he smirked, piling more food into his bowl.
“Well, we’re married now, are you so cruel that you’d make your beloved husband starve?” he said mockingly.
She stared at him as he helped himself to her food, her irritation rising as he proceeded to fish out the best pieces of meat from the stew. As his spoon moved towards his bowl, she blocked his spoon with her own, preventing him from stealing away her meat.
“Beloved husband,” she said sweetly, “Isn’t it rude that you’re stealing my food and leaving me to starve? Are you so cruel that you’d let your dearest wife starve?” she finished, as she struggled to make him let go of his spoon, before eventually failing and letting him escape with his loot.
“Starve, dearest wife? I’d never let that happen. Consider it a small sacrifice for the privilege of dining with such delightful company,” he said, enjoying the meal he had claimed as his own.
“Oh, so you’re taxing me for the displeasure of your company? Fuca Fuheng, I didn’t think you’d stoop so low,” she said, gasping dramatically as she attempted to reclaim some of the fragrant meat from his bowl.
“I’m doing nothing of the sort! In fact, you’re the one so graciously hosting me, in MY room,” he said, grunting as he blocked her surprise attack.
“Oh really? Well then, shouldn’t the host have the honor of enjoying her dinner without any theft involved?” she bit back playfully.
“But my dearest wife, I’m just helping you finish all this food, I wouldn’t want any of it to go to waste,” he said, depositing another piece of meat into his bowl as he smirked at her.
“Fine, fine, but if you choke on something, don’t expect me to help you,” she said, spooning the rest of the meat into her bowl before he could get his sticky hands on it.
She continued eating as they fell into a comfortable silence with the rhythmic clinking of spoons against bowls the only sound in the room.
After they finished the meal, he stated that he’d be sleeping in his study, before going towards the sleeping area and picking up a bedroll he kept.
The cold line that had blurred for a moment was drawn again as he packed his belongings for the night and swiftly wished his wife a good night’s rest.
He felt conflicted as he exited the room. For a brief moment he’d felt surprisingly comfortable with her, but he knew better than to trust a few moments with a stranger. Memories of his misplaced trust in Erqing lingered in his thoughts as strengthened his resolve to be cautious.

Legend of zhen huan episode 26
Wow, so it seems the reason why Hua hasn't been able to get rid of Duan despite thinking she caused her miscarriage is because the emperor made it clear she can't, that coupled with the fact that he remembered something very small about Duan such as her hairpin when he doesn't seem to care about her at all and the way the dowager empress blocked the outside doctor from helping Hua with her pregnancy it's clear they're the ones stopping her from getting pregnant, maybe because of her brother and her bearing a child would make her clan way too powerful and her son the uncontested choice for crown prince and future emperor. The attention to detail in this show is astounding, a throwaway scene 10 episodes ago holds a lot of meaning and importance in the grand scheme of things. I feel so bad for all these women, hua fei for all her evil and disregard for human life so far doesn't seem to try and hurt the pregnant concubines. While the Empress seems to be the epitome of evil and she must be responsible for so many miscarriages, there was even a passing comment about how Cao's birth was so hard she almost didn't make it, and I would bet it was because of the empress. Lingrong's the one who is disappointing me the most, despite fuca's horrible treatment of her, the way she so easily resorted to hurting her unborn child is so unbelievably cold, this wasn't a case of survival, fuca was awful to her but didn't seem to be an actual threat to her safety and it seems she's also trying to hurt zhen huan with her "scar cream". I can't wait until zhen huan starts f*cking her and the empress up. How ungrateful do you have to be to do something like this to the person who helped you time and again despite any misconceptions she has about zhen huan slighting her, even if did, they're all small things that do not warrant this insidious reaction. I'm all for zhen huan's slow growth but sometimes I wish she was more like ming lan and ying luo who had rude awakenings from the start, because she's going to be in a lot of pain...

I just finished watching story of yanxi palace and there are so many things I wanna talk about that drama but Empress Fuca saying "Your Majesty, I became who l am now because I didn't persist in being myself,"
and Noble Imperial Consort Gao saying " I, in the eyes of my Gao clan, am just a pawn in the palace. In your eyes, I'm just a tool of the Gao clan to curry your favour. Now even I don't know who I am."
Both people so different yet so similar in so many ways.

Rose Colored Jerks
Browsing through youtube, I got the suggested video clips of the Story of Yanxi Palace, so naturally I viewed a few of them. Su Qing performance as Hitara Erqing was pretty good. She emoted the feeling of wild fear. I understand that she’s supposed to be the villain, yet other supposed good characters are nasty people. With the cartoonish illogical actions and an unsatisfying character arch for Hitara Erqing, I decided to write a fanfiction of it.
First, I’ll address the good guys??? Here’s what I got so far. Empress Fuca Rongyin wasn’t a completely good person. I think the series was going for gray characters (I hope). Though I’m not doubting she did a lot of good things in the series, her murderous act just soured her character. I wasn’t sad that she died. The empress had decided to withhold medical treatment of Consort Xian’s brother who was in prison. In essence, she killed him. Actually, every royal involved in Consort Xian’s family matter was pretty disgusting. The empress dowager’s pathetic reason for allowing Hoifa-Nara family to take the fall was to keep the peace and apparently the corruption. The series would have been better if they had the nerve not to sugar coat rivalries.  The empress dowager didn’t suggest letting the clan leader take the fall out of desire for a peaceful reign nor did the empress refuse treatment for the brother out of worrying about appearances (they both despise members of that clan). Even these fake reasons are pretty shallow when you think about it. Why go through the trouble of telling us how repressed and ill-treated Rongyin was under the late empress (from Hoifa-Nara) and not ever hint that as the reason for her action?
Another questionable action of the empress was an interchange between Erqing and Yinglou. Erqing had spoken to her in confidence about a problem. The emperor had his sights set on Yinglou. She made a logical strategic recommendation (which is normal occurring to her position) that Yinglou become a concubine to the emperor, so she can aid the empress. Here Erqing is commending Yinglou’s integrity. Then the show attempted to twist this action as something evil, when the empress broke the confidence of Erqing in a showy display to humiliate her. “Oh, Yinglou loves me too much,” the empress declares as she rubs Yinglou’s head affectionately. “Oh, yes, the empress loves the emperor so much, that she doesn’t want anyone else to have him, so I would never do that to her, and you’re evil for saying it Erqing,” is basically Yinglou’s response. Lol, this is all wrong in so many ways. One, did the characters forget that the emperor had a harem of consorts, and Consort Gao has been after her? Later on, Yinglou literally goes against this vow and becomes a consort to the emperor. Oh, you’re terrible for saying this, but several episodes later it will happen anyway.
Then there’s the head scratching scene of Erqing saying something to make the empress want to kill herself. A few fans have commented how it doesn’t really give a motive for Erqing wanting to kill her. Though a justifiable motive wouldn’t put the empress in a good light, it is better than a plot hole. Also, there is the matter of the supposed betrayal talk of Erqing not making any sense to push the empress to suicide. Remember, the whole premise of the show is Yinglou seeking revenge for the rape and murder of her sister. The empress compassionately wishes to support her, yet when Erqing comes to inform her of the emperor raping her, she looked down upon the woman as scum. Probably because the emperor can do no wrong, so it has to be Erqing’s fault. Now, we the audience know pretty sure that she didn’t have sex with the emperor, but still as far as the empress knew Erqing was telling the truth. How does she respond? The empress threatens this rape victim with removing her tongue to keep her quiet. Now the reason for head scratching during this scene is this reveal of Erqing’s won’t have motivated the empress to wish for death, but rather encouraged her to live. For crying out loud again, the emperor has a harem of women, so him sleeping with other women wouldn’t upset her nor ignoring and mistreating her by fawning over any woman. Actually, the empress would have been motivated to live to ensure that Erqing kept her mouth shut and didn’t disgrace the Fuca clan.
I really think the series did a back face by not keeping to it being the consort who killed the empress’ child and the emperor’s neglect being the true reason for the suicide. For a show supposedly about female empowerment and strength, it really misses the mark. Like giving Erqing a legitimate reason for disliking the empress. It could have been an easy matter of jealousy. The empress could have been really cold to her unlike Yinglou and kept her at arm’s length. That’s some of what I did for my fanfiction. The main focus was on Erqing and her husband Fuca Fuheng.
This is where the real rose color glass or should I say modern point of view really obscures the situation. Fuheng couldn’t marry his true love of Yinglou, instead he marries Erqing. A marriage the emperor forces him into, so the jerk can have Yinglou for himself. Now, some fans say Erqing forced him to marry her, which makes no sense, since her clan is lower than his, and she has no power to threaten Yinglou’s life inside the palace at all (I’m hoping this information is wrong because it would be a plot hole). Anyway, they’re married. Since he loves Yinglou, he refuses to have sex with Erqing. Even though he promised that he would make the marriage work, he spends daily for a year living separate from his wife.
Because the audience is only told that she is treated like an ornament, and that he stays in his study all the time to avoid her, we aren’t getting the full effect of his cold shoulder jerkiness. There was no him giving Erqing tons of chances. There’s him fueling her paranoia and fear. When she mistakenly suspects him and a slave girl of an affair, he doesn’t console her. He blames her for his negligence.  As for the suspicions, she wasn’t crazy for thinking something was up. Unlike today, a lone young pretty female attending to his private chambers was a stupid ill responsible decision on his part. Also, the slave was actually acting suspicious and lying (clearly, she had something in her hand). A beating was an acceptable and common response to that time period.
The ripping off the fingernails was nonsense addition from the writers. Ripping out fingernails is torture technique to exact information. This would require a special tool to use, which Erqing happened to have carried with her or outside of a dungeon would have had? I think not.
Getting back into it, after it was over, she apologizes. He doesn’t correct her false assumption, though he had promised to explain the matter fully once she calmed down. “If you want to make the slave girl your concubine, it’s okay with me,” she blatantly said this.
Instead of saying, “Oh no, dear, you’re my wife, and there is only you,” he goes in left field about calling her evil for beating a slave. Dude, you work as a guard in the imperial palace. Slaves are often beaten or punished on a whim. Guess what she knows that too because served your sister, the empress, and the threat of beatings was over her head too. Her look of confusion makes sense sadly because that’s the norm of the time.
Then again, he doesn’t care to think or make this marriage work. He promised he would, but he kept the love pouch of Yinglou. While we think it’s sweet of him to do, it has made his marriage to Erqing miserable. It’s not like she can divorce him and leave. No, only he can divorce her. After he tells how can you not think of the slave as a person, he doesn’t care to treat Erqing with any affection. He threatens her with divorce like it’s simply some demotion and is callous towards her being a widow.
If you have seen some other Chinese costume drama, you’ll might have observed the abusive treatment of a childless widow (like being thrown in the cold palace). Erqing has legitimate reason to be afraid for herself especially since if anything happens to Fuheng, clan Fuca will treat her like garbage, she has practically a slim to impossible chance of remarrying, and her clan won’t want her back (it would be disgraceful). Yet, he can deride her for worrying, when the dire situation would never befall him. He can divorce her, and she gets sent away, but nothing can happen to him. He has all the power in this time period, while she’s expected to walk on a tight rope.
She’s the one in danger and the only one penalized. It’s not like she can tell Mother Fuca that Fuheng refuses to have sex with her. If she did, Mother Fuca would blame her. It’s interesting to read fans’ comments and see how much they gloss over his actions. The guy admitted to treating his wife cold and indifferent for their entire marriage, yet in the same breath feels he’s justified because in public he talks respectfully to her (though with no affection or warmth).
Some fans want to believe that he was at least kind and attentive to her son. The truth is he was a jerk to her and to the little boy. I might be wrong and there is some other scene that I miss. However, the treat giving scene says a lot in between the lines. First off, Fuheng doesn’t even refer to the child by his name (that’s sweetness for you ☹). It wasn’t because he is annoyed at Erqing for mishandling the child. It’s due to him being cold to the boy too. How do I know this?
The boy is probably between 2 to 5 years old, I think. He has wandered away from the mother and the nanny (people tend to forget about that) and snuck into his office. The boy shyly stands against the wall until Fuheng recognizes and allows the boy on his lap to eat a snack. The relieved mother scoops him up in her arms. Fuheng immediately insults her for not keeping a good watch on the boy (which this as the first time means that she is doing a great job lol like he would know) and implies that she would hurt a child (unlike him). I guess he forgot about the time he threatened to harm her, while she was pregnant.
For those without children or who have never babysat children, the boy’s shy behavior with Fuheng actually shows that the kid has had little to no interaction with him. Even the shiest of children won’t hide up against a wall. He would have stood next to him. So, she had good reason to be leery of what he might do to a boy who is not his son and is cold and distant to him (lol I just watched a recent clip which says it has been 3 years that he has been off to battle, so my assumption is correct. He never saw the baby being born and spent no time with the kid). The implied accusation of her hurting a child is unfounded. She has never harmed a child. Then again, he has implied evil of her unfoundedly before.
He accused her of seeking an alliance from her own relative After she calmly gave her explanation, he never apologized to her. No, she’s the pure evil person. Are we to ignore the fact that Mother Fuca saw no problem with her punishments to the slave girl nor with putting the slave girl to death? That’s just thrown in there to make Fuheng look more virtuous and completely forgotten later (for my fanfic, I include it).
Now, this has been some of my ranting, and I could go on lol. My fanfiction will address some more of these issues and give a better character arch for Erqing (like an actual reason that she pursues him when he clearly was interested in someone else). Too many shows have the annoying pinning after a jerk guy who loves someone else and either dying or living alone unhappily. Seriously, I’m tired of this especially when there is a nicer guy around. Hence, my fanfiction story is entitled, “Tired.” Take care.

How do you think thinks would have been if Xiangjan would have been presented at the court by the time Langhua was still the empress? Just a random tought hehe, don't have to ask if this bothers you.
oh things would be so so different...
a) even though qianlong treated langhua terribly, he wouldn't dare mistreat her in the same way he mistreated ruyi. this lies in the fact that the fuca clan is very powerful and their faction is made up of manchu nobility who qianlong depends on very much. to go all out for han xiangjian would mean to undermine langhua's position of empress which would mean the court would rise in opposition and that would be difficult for qianlong to handle. ruyi, despite being from a manchu clan herself, does not have powerful clansmen at court due to the disgrace the clan earned during her aunt's lifetime, which is why she cannot pull the strings the way langhua could (qianlong could not even fathom the possibility of slapping langhua publicly due to the repercussions)
b) the empress dowager's clansmen were still quite active during langhua's reign and they would probably join hands with fuca clan's faction if the dowager was displeased, which would once again build up the pressure on qianlong. the only reason this didn't happen during ruyi's reign is because at that point qianlong had mostly purged the dowager's influence at court.
c) langhua would never convince xiangjian the way ruyi would and would probably silently get rid of her without raising any alarm

I just learned that lady nara was a cefujin only for 9 month before qianlong's ascencion and that Zhe huang guifei was his concubine for 2 years before he married to lady fuca.
But i thought that he wass supposely choose his wife first before having other concubines? Like how they showed it in legend of ruyi and the fact ruyi was selected as a cefujin like 5 years after may it be because she was favored or because of her clan?
Please can you explain me how the princes are supposely choose their harem members?
Re: Zhemin – you did not always have to have a main wife first. Many men might actually have some form of concubine first (for practice) before they marry an official wife. The concubine can be to varying levels of formality, anything from just maids that he casually has sex with or actual concubines that are recognised as such. For princes, it’s then possible that Zhemin becomes his ce fujin/concubine first before he married Fucha.
I want to stress, drama is not history. Drama compresses and mixes up timelines to heighten the stakes. Historically Nara was much younger than Gao, and even future Yu Fei, and the fact that she entered the household late was just because she was younger. She was most probably appointed to Hongli because I don’t know emperors sometimes randomly give their sons concubines, either for very political reasons or for no reason at all.
Actually the fact that Nara was much younger than Gao means that it makes sense when Hongli came to the throne that Gao was given a higher title. Legend of Ruyi kind of had to finagle a reason, which also served the purpose of increasing the drama between the empress dowager and Ruyi’s aunt.

The Qianlong emperor had at least four consorts who were originally from booi families, in other words, bondservants, all of whom were buried with him in the imperial mausoleum. The most prominent was Consort Wei 魏 (1727–1775), who was from a Han military family that had been promoted to a Manchu banner. She had more children than any other wife, six, and was the mother of his successor, Yongyan, born in 1760. She rose through the ranks and eventually became imperial honored consort in 1765, bearing four sons and two daughters in the decade between 1756 and 1766. She was one of two bondservants to become empress in the Qing, the second being the next emperor’s wife. In both cases the women’s fathers were promoted to duke. Of the three other bondservants among Qianlong’s wives, the first was a Manchu of the Fuca clan, who bore the emperor’s eldest son (1728). Another was a Han named Gao 高 (d. 1745),whose father was freed from booi status and eventually became a grand secretary. The third was Korean, Imperial Honored Consort Shujia 淑嘉 (d. 1755), who had four sons and whose father and brother likewise attained high posts as a result of her prominence. Empress Xiaoxian and Consorts Wei and Shujia had the most children and, along with the woman of the Fuca clan and Gao, were interred in Qianlong’s mausoleum long before he died. No other emperor in the Ming and Qing had as many wives buried in his mausoleum as he. As already noted, a woman did not have to be an empress or consort mother to merit burial in the imperial mausoleum. Being a favored wife was enough.

New Calf with J Pod
Tofino Whale Centre - May 31, 2019
Yesterday we got word from Tim (The Whale Centre) and Jeffrey Tom (Jamie’s) that there were Killer Whales 4 miles off Lennard Light. John and I headed out on the Lil Salty to go out and see who the whales were. We got on scene and determined that the whales were in fact J pod. All whale watching companies made the call to stop watching the whales once they knew they were in fact SWKW.
We took a few photo of the whales to send to DFO and the Centre for Whale Research. John noticed a brand new calf with J41. We were both really excited to see the calf was very orange and still had fetal folds. We observed the new calf with J41 and J19. We see J pod once a year, the last time we saw them was June 8th, 2018, they were also heading down the coast.
Here is some info on these Killer Whales from The Centre for Whale Research:
The Southern Resident killer whales (also called orcas/Orcinus orca) are a large extended family, or clan, comprised of three pods: J, K, and L pods. Within each pod, families form into sub-pods centered around older females, usually grandmothers or great-grandmothers. Both male and female offspring remain in close association with their mothers for life.
Each Southern Resident pod uses a distinctive dialect of calls (sounds) to communicate. Certain calls are shared between all three pods. The calls used by the Southern Resident community are unlike the calls used by any other community of killer whales. These calls can travel ten miles or more underwater.
From spring through fall, the Southern Resident killer whales are most often seen in the protected inshore waters of the Salish Sea. The Salish Sea includes the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Strait of Georgia, and Puget Sound, and all their connecting channels and adjoining waters, and the waters around and between the San Juan Islands in Washington State and the Gulf Islands in British Columbia.
Photos were taken with a permit and no guests were on board.

Date: 11-August-19
Sequence: 1
Encounter Number: 51
Enc Start Time: 14:15
Enc End Time: 17:33
Vessel: Mike 1
Observers: Mark Malleson, Joe Zelweitro
Pods or ecotype: Southern Residents
Location: Clo-oose
Begin Lat/Long: 48 35.4/124 51.9
End Lat/Long: 48 34.1/124 44.5
Encounter Summary:
Mark and Joe left Victoria harbor at 0730 on Mike 1 to head west out the Juan de Fuca to search for whales with hopes to see the large concentration of humpbacks seen off of Sombrio Point the last few days with hopes to get out towards Swiftsure Bank to find the Southern Residents.
They entered fog slightly east of Sombrio Point, so they stopped to listen for blows. The occasional single blow could be heard, so they continued a bit further west and stopped to listen again. More blows could be heard slightly to the northwest, so they continued another mile in that direction. The fog cleared up, and they came across a large concentration of humpbacks at 48 27.0/124 22.5 _~30 individuals. After getting most of their flukes photographed, they decided to continue west towards Swiftsure Bank taking advantage of the near-perfect conditions with minimal swell and wind. As they approached the western entrance to the Juan de Fuca, there was a moderate southwest breeze with a 2 - 3-foot chop. They tacked off towards the south edge of the bank and came across a small aggregation of humpbacks 7 miles southeast of the bank (48 30.1/124 50.1) and were certain they saw a breaching killer whale as they approached that area. After several minutes they concluded that it must have been a small humpback so continued on. Once reaching the southeast corner of the bank, they took a tack across the eastern edge of the bank on a line for the Nitinat river mouth. As they went north, the seas flattened out. When they got within 5 miles of the Vancouver Island shoreline and had a good scan before they took a line to the southeast. Bingo! At 1415 they spotted killer whales on the bow at 48 35.4/124 51.9 (~4.5 nm southwest of Carmanah). We quickly confirmed that we were seeing members of the Southern Residents and that representatives of all three pods were present and from the spread, we guessed that the entire clan was there. We were able to find J31 with her new calf J56 as well as L77's calf L124 that was first identified by CWR in January near Constance Bank when the entire clan was last observed on the inside. They all continued on a line towards the Vancouver Island shoreline spread from the mouth of the Nitinat river to slightly west of Carmanah. Once they were within a mile of the shore, they actively foraged (48 39.6/124 52.5) for close to an hour before they headed southeast past Carmanah. We ended the encounter at 1733 (48 34.1/124 44.5)

Waking up the next day was a strenuous task. Her body resisted being pulled from the soft fabrics of the bed but alas the day had begun, leaving her with no choice but to awaken. Sitting up she looked around the room but found no trace of her husband or the mattress he slept on the night prior. He must have awoken before the sun could touch the horizon.
Her maid swiftly bathed her before helping her dress in a beautiful red robe with beautiful floral embroidery on it. Assmebling her hair into an updo worthy of her new status, she placed hairpins and jewels in the young mistress’ hair before helping her apply her makeup.
“What’s your name?” She asked.
“Mistress, I am called QingQing,” the servant replied meekly, bowing her head.
“Hello QingQing. Do you know where my husband went so early in the morning?”
“Mistress, he is in his study,” QingQing replied.
“Oh? Well then, I suppose I should wish my husband a good morning, shouldn’t I?” She said, rising from her seat. “Take me to his study, will you?”
“Yes mistress,” QingQing replied dutifully while grasping her arm and slowly leading the new Young Mistress of the Fuca clan to her husband’s study.
The polished columns glistened in the soft light as the pair made their way towards the young master’s study. It had a rather beautiful exterior with gently sloping roofs. She opened the door before entering, after being allowed entry.
The sight of her new husband at his desk greeted her. He seemed engrossed in the report before him. After clearing her throat, she finally caught his attention. He questioningly looked up at her.
Smiling at the man she said, “Good morning, husband!”
After a few moments of hesitance he responded, “Good morning.”
“We have to go greet your mother together today, or did you forget?”
“I did not forget,” he said simply before rising from his desk and walking past her, leading the way to the Matron’s courtyard.
“What happened to, ‘you don’t even have to see me’?” he asked rhetorically as they reached the Matron’s courtyard.
“It’s only applicable when we don’t have obligations to be seen together.” She huffed, rolling her eyes at the man, before the pair entered. The matron sat on a beautifully carved wooden chair in the center of the room with ornate seats along the aisle.
The smell of incense wafted through the room as the matron sated sightlessly at the pair, listening to their footsteps as they drew closer and bowed before her.
She smiled, telling them to rise before letting them be seated.
Her new daughter-in-law served the woman tea with elegant hands and a charming smile on her face.
The matron drank the tea, feeling a wave of calm wash over her as the flavors burst on her tongue.
“Delicious,” she breathed reverently, “What did you put in this tea? I’ve never tasted it before.”
“Madam Fuca, I added lemongrass and a bit of ginger, to help warm your body and improve your appetite. I also added a little honey to sweeten the flavor. Do you like it Madam Fuca?”
“You’re so thoughtful! I’m so happy my son was blessed with such a caring wife. I love this tea, perhaps you can make it for me again?”
“If you like it so much, I’d gladly make it for you every day, Madam Fuca.” She replied with a smile on her face. Her husband stared at her with narrowed eyes, making note to keep an eye on her actions in the future.
“Please, don’t call me ‘Madam Fuca’ it’s so formal, we’re family now, please call me mother.”
“Okay, mother,” she said, slightly giggling.
The matron then turned to her maid, beaconing her to bring forward the gift she had prepared for her new daughter in law. On the ornate tray sat a beautiful bracelet of white jade, a golden carnelian hair pin with lilies and lotuses delicately entwined within the design and a pair of gold earrings along with a bracelet engraved with Mandarin ducks, a symbol of love and a lifelong mate.
Smiling graciously, she thanked the matron.
“Oh, my dear. I forgot to tell you. Now that you’ve married into our household, I expect you to help me in household affairs. I’m getting old and I want to teach you how to manage our house as soon as possible.”
Before she was able to respond her husband interrupted, protesting, “Mother. My wife is still young, perhaps it might be better if she just watches for a few years before she starts helping in the household affairs? It would help her learn better. Don’t you think so, wife?”
“Husband,” she said with a pleased smile, “as wise as your suggestion is, I have been helping my mother run our household in preparation, so as to not further burden my in-laws by my lack of knowledge. I think I shall be able to help manage the household affairs, under Mother’s guidance, of course. Do you object, husband?” she said with a wide grin, knowing she backed him into a corner.
“In that case. I do not have a reason to object.” He said through gritted teeth, annoyed at his wife getting her way. He decided in that moment to not let her gain power over the mansion as quickly as his previous wife did.
“Wonderful! In that case, the head-maid Fei will deliver the ledgers to you and if you are able to handle the accounts this month without any mistakes, I will give you more responsibilities. Does that sound fair?”
“Yes, mother. Thank you for trusting me with this. I will not let you down.” She promised.
“I know you won’t. I’m getting a little tired now, its time for me to go get some rest. You may both leave,” She said, rising to her feet.
As she turned to walk away, she left them with a last request, “Oh, and Fuheng? Take your new wife for a tour through the mansion. Also show her the gardens. I hear the flowers are beautiful, this time of the year.”
Fuheng saw his wife looking at him expectantly, sighing he mumbled, “Follow me.”
He led his wife through the mansion with swift, precise steps, showing her the various places within the mansion with a disinterested monotonous tone as she took in the manor, making note to check out certain places that intrigued her. The painfully awkward tour concluded with a tour of the garden where Fuheng stiffly walked beside his wife, wishing for her to speed up as she stopped by each and every flower, asking about it’s name and purpose. When she knew the name of a particular flower she shared what she had read about it, be it sickeningly sweet poetry or its medicinal use.
While Fuheng was suffering through the tour, his wife was taking particular delight in his suffering as she purposely stopped at every flower in the garden, elongating the tour as much as possible and taking slow steps. When she saw him tapping his feet in impatience she slowed down even further, wracking her brains for all the possible plant-related knowledge she had ever learned.
‘Serves him right for doubting my capabilities.’ She thought internally as he sighed for the hundredth time, tapping his sword impatiently.
Just as she was about to point towards another flower a tiny body crashed into Fuheng.
“Father!”
Fuheng looked down at the smiling boy with his arms around his waist. He smiled softly at the child before kneeling before him.
“An’er, you know better than to run wild in the garden,” he admonished.
“Father, I missed you. I haven’t seen you in a few days and when I saw you today, I couldn’t control myself. I’m sorry, father.”
At the boy’s confession, Fuheng seemed to melt before promising to spend more time with the boy.
Satisfied with his father’s promise, he noticed the beautiful woman staring at him with wide eyes. Turning his attention to his father he pointed at the woman and asked, “Father, who is she?”
Fuheng followed his gaze, landing on his new wife. “An’er that is my new wife. She will be your mother from now on.”
“But my mother is Hitara Erqing, she died. How can this woman be my mother?” he asked with child-like curiosity.
Fuheng opened his mouth to explain when he was interrupted by his wife, “(S/N), I am not your birth mother, Hitara Erqing because she will always be your mother and she is always watching you and taking care of you, but because she is not here, I will take care of you as she would want me to.”
Nodding his head in understanding he asked, “Will I have to call you ‘mother’?”
“No dear, you can call me ‘Aunty’ if you want to, okay?”
“Okay aunty!”
“Good boy.” She said, patting his head.
Fuheng watched the interaction with rapt attention, this woman seemed to overturn his expectations of her. Didn’t all women want to be called ‘mother’ by their children, adopted or not?
‘Perhaps she wants to keep (S/N) at a distance so that when the time comes it’d be easier for her children to stand out.’
He decided that this was the only possible reason behind her actions and resolved to keep his son away from his new wife.
“An, you should go get ready for your lessons. Your tutor will be arriving soon,” Fuheng said, leaving no room for argument before turning to his servant and motioning him to escort the young boy away.
“It was lovely meeting you, An!” she said, a large smile on her face as she waved to the departing child.
“Nice meeting you too, pretty aunty!” He exclaimed before following his escort.

Researchers were frustrated by high winds Tuesday in the Salish Sea as they tried to track mother orca Tahlequah, or J35, who has captured worldwide attention for carrying her dead calf for a full week.
No one had seen the whale by midday, and researchers were unable to confirm if she was still clinging to her baby for an eighth day because of the weather and the whale’s travels.
J35, a member of the critically endangered southern-residents clan, gave birth to a calf July 24 that lived for only a half-hour. She refused to let go of the calf, carrying it continuously for seven days.
She was last seen carrying the calf at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Boundary Pass, said Taylor Shedd of Soundwatch, who has been keeping vigil with the whales. The whale had been traveling about 6 knots and was falling behind her family, which had stayed with her since the calf’s death.
Members of her clan were seen  at Hein Bank in the Strait of Juan de Fuca by early afternoon Tuesday but it had not been confirmed if Tahlequah was among them.

The New Mistress Fuca Part 1
Fuca Fuheng just lost his not-so-beloved wife, Hitara Erqing. Finally feeling as though he might get a bit of respite, he’s once again thrown into the deep end when the emperor arranges a second marriage for his most trusted General. He arranges a marriage with the Weiyan clan, a clan made up of scholars and military generals alike.
Will Fuheng’s new wife be the same as his old one? Will she be able to change his eternally frosty demeanor? Or will she be cursed to a life of loneliness at the hands of her infatuated husband?
Author's Note: Thank you everyone for your patience with me, I've been going through some major writers block and haven't had time recently to write but I'll try to update this as much as possible. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy this, it's gonna be a semi-slowburn.
Warnings: Arranged marriage, Fictional OC, Fictional names, Distortion or misrepresentation of Historical facts.

~
Everyone had heard about Fuca Fuheng of the great Fuca Clan. The man who rapidly climbed up the imperial ranks, bringing glory to both his Clan as well as the Empire. The man who everyone envied. The man who recently lost his wife, Erqing.
When the Emperor issued a second marriage, the Weiyan Clan was both shocked and pleased. The Emperor, himself, granting such an advantageous marriage to one of their daughters was a great honor. Her mother, Weiyan Fei was incredibly excited, happy that her daughter had been paired with such a great man. She immediately started preparations for the impending nuptials, making sure that nothing was short of perfection. She had the finest robes made and ordered for the finest jewels to be set into her daughter’s head-piece, because after all, her eldest daughter deserved the best.
Her mother held her hands, overcome with emotion at the prospect of not seeing her daughter again, to which she promised that she’d visit so often that her mother would get sick of her. Her mother laughed, chiding the young woman.
Placing her daughter in the wedding sedan, the pair tearfully said goodbye, promising to see each other at the Fuca manor for the wedding.
She sat in the wedding sedan, head weighed down by the golden crown placed delicately on her head by her maids. Her fingers played with the embroidered sleeves of her phoenix robe. The robe was magnificent, the embroidery, vivid and life-like. As she toyed with the fabric, she wondered, ‘What will my future husband be like?’
‘Will he be kind?’
‘Will he be gentle?’
‘Will he be angry?’
‘Will he be rude?’
Her musings were cut off when she felt the sedan halt. They had arrived.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped out of the sedan, ready to meet her groom. She was lead through the courtyard to the prayer hall where the ceremony would take place.
Her vision was blurred by the red veil but she could make out a few things like the beautiful decorations that flooded the Fuca manor as well as the magnificent architecture that the old manor seemed to proudly display.
Her soon-to-be groom stood proud and tall, a cold expression on his face and ice in his eyes. He barely looked at her during the ceremony. The pair dutifully bowed in synchrony, completing the marriage ceremony before retiring to the bridal suite.
~
She sat on the bed graciously, awaiting the arrival of her husband to remove her veil. She was nervous, what if he found her unattractive? Her thoughts halted as she heard him enter the room. Soon she felt him near her. Slowly kneeling before her, he removed the veil from her face.
She looked at him, stunned by his beauty. It was no wonder that so many women pined after him, she seemed blessed to have such an attractive husband, yet he seemed to glare at her. His expression betrayed no emotions yet his eyes, like burning charcoal were filled with what looked like anger.
The first words he said to her dripped venom, as if he was cursed to interact with her he said, “I will not lay with you.”
Shocked, she let out, “What do you mean?”
“I do not want to consummate our union,” he said, again.
“Why?” She asked, heartbroken. What would her relatives say? What would her mother say? Barely a few minutes into her marriage and she’d already failed in the one thing she was meant to do.
“Because I’m not ready.”
“You do realize that if our union is not consummated, we are going against the Imperial Edict, which is treason. Furthermore, by lying about it we would be committing the crime of deceiving the Emperor which will surely get us both killed,” she stated, voice growing more panicked as she went on.
“I do realize that. Trust me, I know and I have thought this through. I will not lay with you until I’m ready,” he said stubbornly.
“Fine, do as you wish. But when you’re ready, I might not be there, waiting for you,” she warned.
“I already know how that feels,” he said cryptically, chuckling bitterly.
He moved to exit the room but halted when he hard her call his name.
“Since we’re not consummating our marriage like we’re supposed to, would you mind helping me take off all of my hair pins? I’d usually have a maid to do that but since she’s not here, you’re all I’ve got and tragically I’ll have to make do with you,” she said, sighing in mock disappointment before taking a seat near the dresser.
Reluctantly agreeing, Fuheng stood behind his new bride, gently pulling out the heavy gold pins from her hair. Her long black hair tumbled out of her bun like a midnight waterfall, soft to the touch he felt like he was caressing spun silk.
After removing her head-dress she sighed in content, glad to have the extra weight off her neck. Massaging her neck, she looked at her husband through the mirror, watching him. He didn’t want to make eye-contact with her, strange.
“Thank you,” she said softly.
“You can take the bed,” he said.
“And where will you sleep? The floor?”
“Don’t be silly, I’ll sleep in my office.”
“Your office? But it gets so cold during the night! Surely you can tolerate my presence for one night?” She said, concerned. As much as she might dislike her new husband, she did not want him to catch is death prematurely.
Sensing his reluctance she sighed, “Look, if you sneak out of our room and the servants see you sleeping in your office it will be more humiliating for me than it would be for you. Everyone will talk and I’d prefer it if they did not, especially since our marriage is new and my place in your household is currently unstable. Okay?”
He stared at her intensely.
She stared right back, unrelenting. If he would not sleep with her, the least he could do was protect her reputation.
Seeing her refusal to backdown, the young General reluctantly acquiesced. Calling in one of his trusted manservants, he called for a second bedspread. Then laying it down beside his marital bed, he went to slip into something more comfortable to sleep in when his new wife emerged from behind the screen within their room. Wearing a soft-looking robe with her long hair swaying behind her as she moved, she walked past him.
She laid down on their bed before and looking at him for a few minutes and turning away.
Averting his eyes to his wife, he moved behind the screen and changed his wedding robes. Emerging from behind the screen, he approached the bedding on the floor before laying down. He closed his eyes, trying to sleep yet Chuángshén let him get no respite.
He could hear the soft breaths of his wife and couldn’t help but feel a small degree of pity. She was tied to a man who loved another. She was cursed to a life full of loneliness and misery. But despite his pity, he remained cautious, intent to not have history repeat itself with his second wife. He decided, in that moment, that he would watch her and not let her tear down his home, like his previous wife did.

The New Mistress Fuca Part 2: Pillowtalk
Striking a deal with his new wife, Fuheng seals his fate. A life of pretending to be happy in front of others.
Warnings: None
Author’s Note: I know, it’s odd that I’m posting 2 times in a row, but this scene was begging to get out of my head. Sorry it’s so short, but it felt right that this should be short.
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4
Tumblr media
Sleep almost came over the newly married groom when he heard the bedsheets rustle above him. It seemed, he wasn’t the only one who was restless that night.
A quiet sleepy voice gently called, “Fuheng?”
“Hmm?” He hummed sleepily.
“I understand that you’re probably missing your wife. I should’ve been more understanding off your feelings,” she softly said.
“Thank you,” he said, unwilling to discuss his late wife.
“Tell me about her, the woman you love.”
Fuheng was silent for a few moments, before his voice softened. His mind filled with thoughts of her, of the moments spent together in Changchun palace, her quick wit and unrestrained demeanor that wormed its way into his well-guarded heart. Slowly, he answered his new bride, “She was wonderful. Wild and free, unrestrained and unafraid of offending people. She was quick-witted and never failed to make me smile.”
“You truly loved her,” she said with a tone of realization.
“She owns a piece of my soul.”
Silence reigned between the couple for a few moments before she spoke again,
“I think we should set up some rules, if we’re going to look like a happy couple on the outside we must play the part, don’t you think?”
Thinking for a moment, he sighed, “Fine. What kind of rules would you suggest?”
“Well, firstly, no one should know that our marriage remains unconsummated. Secondly, you have to treat my family kindly and with respect. Thirdly, you must promise to protect me, be it from physical threats or people who might scheme against me. Fourthly, you must occasionally accompany me to banquets or celebrations so that people can see that we’re a happy couple. And lastly, you must be affectionate to me in public. Privately, we can live our separate lives, you don’t have to see me, it’s fine,” she said, laying down her conditions with conviction.
“I will agree to your conditions if you agree to a few of mine as well.”
“State them, then.”
“Firstly, you must respect my mother and fawn over her. You mustn’t let her hear of our charade, let her think we’re a happy couple. Secondly, you must treat the servants well. Don’t abuse them or harm them without cause. Thirdly, you will treat my son well. I know you might not feel affection for him within your heart for he is not your blood, but he’s my son so you cannot treat him badly. So, do we have a deal?”
“Your requests are reasonable, we have a deal,” she said, sealing her deal with her husband.
“Sleep now, tomorrow is your first day in our household. You have to awaken early to greet my mother,” Fuheng said before turning away from his bride.
“Sweet dreams, husband,” she murmured.
“Sweet dreams, wife.”
