i’ve been sick for days (now i know it’s been covid) so i tried getting my shifts at work covered but there wasn’t anyone to cover, so i came in this morning anyway even though i felt like i was dying (didn’t know i had covid at this point) and people were almost more annoyed that i showed up sick instead of calling in leaving them short staffed which i ended up doing anyway bc i had to leave (at which point i found out i have covid) and now i’m annoyed that they’re annoyed and everything is annoying and i feel like death.

I recognize that I have extremely picky reading tastes, but if I pick up a book and the author’s idea of introducing the characters is to have them deliver a carrd monologue about themselves, I’m gonna hurl first the book and then myself into the sun.

#the valley is posting #why. why is your character blithely listing out every aspect of their identity to the reader. #1) show don't tell #2) you can have pov characters who talk to the reader but they need to build a rapport first #and just listing off facts about yourself does not a rapport build #if in real life; someone came up to you and just started listing off personal details about themselves; you'd find it odd #3) i'm begging writers of queer lit to stop assuming that queerness by itself makes a story or character good #there are many good stories about queer people; there are many good queer stories; but they aren't good by sole virtue of being queer #they're good because the stories and characters are compelling or well composed or speak to meaningful experiences #they're not good just because the storyteller decided to make the protagonist gay #4) show don't fucking tell #5) the absolute cognitive dissonance of a character announcing to the reader that they're awkward and introverted #while also telling the reader. a stranger. every personal detail about yourself. #6) also. pet peeve as a front-line library worker but. if you don't like interacting with people; you're in the wrong fucking job. #even if you work behind the scenes in a library; 90% of your job is interacting with people #7) not to reiterate points but SHOW DON'T TELL

i loved the world and the vibes of disco elysium so much and so much of it was amazing but i wish it hadn't also been copaganda and (from what i saw in my playthrough) weirdly anti-union, i wanna spend time in that world without having to be a cop and hang out with cops. left such a bad taste in my mouth to have that beautiful final cryptid scene reduced to 'great PR for the police'. like the game raises so many interesting questions about ideology but ultimately the message about policing seems to just be 'we need more good apples, the world needs cops and it's important that they are Good Guys, the choices of individual cops are ultimately the most important thing'. i loved the game overall but the more i think about what it was actually saying the more i disagree with the majority of it

Man, I have such a clear image of like. The map of where one of my stories takes place, but if i even tried to put it to paper I'd fuck it up so badly

#like. there's this coastline that's kind of all juttery and stuff and it very gently dips inland down south but goes almost straight and #slightly outwards in the north and about midway along the coast in the east there's a little jut-out where there's a port #north of the port there's these steep cliff faces and down south they wear down into rolling hills and slim sandy shores #the east cape of the continent is up north just off the map by maybe 25000-27000 kilometers. west of the port there's the capital and north #of that is a small old mountain range #the capital is made up of limestone and brick buildings with 4 floors and a network of huge gears and weird pulley systems throughout. they #kind of look like they're almost leaning on each other and the further toward the edges of the town you go the more it looks like the city #home just sprouted in the middle of a storefront or an inn or something overnight #the town square is set up in the ruins of this ivory castle and taken up almost completely by stalls with colorful awnings. it has dark #cobblestone streets surrounding it and no pavements ending where the forged iron and brimstone walls of the administrative buildings' #front gardens begin or branching off further into the city down streets with pavement either side #there's a foundry on the edge of time by which most locals are employed. it has it's own dedicated train line which connects with the #station further south-east. the manors and estates outside of the city have lush forests and red brick walls closer to the residences of #workers and the nobles inhabiting the land #anyways. i'll probably workshop my beloved little steampunk city more later these are just like. notes to get down the image of it i have #in my head because it's so pretty. the stalls in the square look like colorful wild flowers from above <3 #boo rambles #unrelated
