I'm so happy that you love Folklore too! It's not just my favorite Taylor Swift album, but easily one of by favorite albums, full stop :) Here's a fun challenge: which Folklore songs remind you of a certain ship? So is there a Folklore song that makes you think of literati? Another one that makes you think of a Grey's ship? A third that makes you think of Elizabeth/Darcy? A fourth that reminds you of Klaroline and - I'll shut up, you get the idea :) Pick any Folklore songs/ships you want!

Taylor Swift’s latest album is a masterclass of musical poetry and storytelling. Rarely do I download every song a musician puts out on a new album (I tend to pick and choose), but I can genuinely say I never hit DOWNLOAD so fast in my life before than I did with Folklore! I love all sixteen tracks! I’ve been listening to them on a loop for two days straight and I imagine that’s likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

Also, YASSS! That is a fun challenge! It’s also one I can manage because I’ve been thinking about how certain songs/lyrics apply to many of my ships since I first started listening anyway. Prepare yourself. This is gonna be long. 😁

Okay SO, for Literati...

If I’m angling to lean into s3-s6 angst that was Rory and Jess at that point in the OG series, then I’d say the 1 is a good fit. That song has the same energy as someone who’s writing a goodbye letter to a loved one that will never be sent. It’s cleansing. Cathartic. An exorcism of feeling. It absolutely reeks of regret and longing with just a touch of look-back-over-your-shoulder-and-wish, just wish, that things could have been different:

“But we were something, don't you think so?”

“And if my wishes came true It would've been you“

“But it would've been fun If you would've been the one”

However, if I’m in more of a They’ll Come Back to Each Other mood with Literati then I think this is me trying screams Rory and Jess. That song emanates nostalgia! It’s haunting in tone (with the echoes, with some slight vibrato). The lyrics bleed with feeling, with emotion that should have rusted long ago but hasn’t. Love is still as red as it was at the beginning of everything only now...only now there’s realization and an attempt at atonement for past mistakes...

“I didn't know if you'd care if I came back I have a lot of regrets about that Pulled the car off the road to the lookout Could've followed my fears all the way down And maybe I don't quite know what to say But I'm here in your doorway“

It's hard to be anywhere these days When all I want is you You're a flashback in a film reel On the one screen in my town (the town, of course, made me think of Stars Hollow)

I just wanted you to know That this is me trying At least I'm trying

For Darcy and Elizabeth, I think seven works well for them in spots. If you listen to the song, there’s a little bit of an echoey timber to the way Taylor sings it and that gave me the sense of how classic love stories/literature kind of ripple across time, you know? How the pages may crinkle or yellow over the years, but they still leave their mark. Plus, there’s also the piano in the background. Almost feather light. It mixes with what sounds like violins in places. Idk, it has a slight P&P 2005 vibe about it to me:

“Please picture me in the weeds Before I learned civility” >> (Because did Darcy learn civility before or after Lizzie eviscerated him mid-proposal at Rosings? Did Lizzie learn to temper her prejudice before or after Lydia ran away with Wickham?)

“Passed down like folk songs Our love lasts so long“ >> (Elizabeth says herself she’s going to be happier than Jane because “[she] laughs; [her sister] only smiles.”)

I have a couple for Klaroline, too. hoax jumped out at me for them first because it’s layered with darkness and angst. The imagery pops. It’s all smoking guns and eclipsed suns and screaming on cliffsides; which, for a pair of supernaturals, and for an Original who has a history of leaving blood in his wake, I think some visuals of misery and violence are a fitting thing. I’m also obsessed with the piano in this. The way she strokes her fingers over the keys - quick tap, tap, taps then a slow one or two in places - gives you a sense of running. It’s a great parallel to her lyric about “sleepless nights.” Here are some other Klaroline-heavy lyrics in this song:

“You knew it still hurts underneath my scars From when they pulled me apart But what you did was just as dark Darling, this was just as hard As when they pulled me apart” >> (This whole section just booms with “I’ve shown kindness. Forgiveness. Pity. For you, Caroline It was all for you” energy.)

“Your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in Don't want no other shade of blue But you No other sadness in the world would do“

peace is the other song that had me crying in Klaroline. I like the softness of it, the vulnerability. I imagine it more from Klaus’s perspective, though, because it strikes me as more confessional in nature. Like it’s a revelation that’s being dragged across his teeth and he wants to scream. Almost as if these aren’t necessarily feelings he wants to share, or wants known, but there’s just no holding them back now. He’s thrown off the lid. Caroline needs to be able to walk toward him with her eyes wide open, so he only speaks truth, he only speaks honesty now. Similar to hoax, this song has darker imagery as well. There’s fire and fences and trenches and all that jazz:

“Your integrity makes me seem small You paint dreamscapes on the wall“ >> (Same energy as “you’re strong, beautiful, full of light.”)

“And you know that I'd Swing with you for the fences Sit with you in the trenches” >> (basically a promise that he’d fight FOR her and WITH her)

“But I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm If your cascade ocean wave blues come All these people think love's for show But I would die for you in secret“ >> (THIS IS THE PART THAT HITS ME THE MOST BC so much of Klaus’s love is shown not spoken, so yeah, he dies for her in secret all. the. time. already. There are 5 other ways I could interpret that as well. But I will spare you haha)

“The devil's in the details

“Would it be enough If I could never give you peace?” >>With supernatural enemies everywhere, there won’t be much peace, will there?

I get walloped with Braime/Jaime and Brienne feels every time I listen to epiphany. Like, it’s actually rude how much this song makes me think of them. I can close my eyes and hear their swords clanging, taste the blood of their injuries on my tongue; feel the ash claw their throats, sting their eyes. Just--ah! The two of them serving, fighting back-to-back, two knights with an unspoken oath to protect a love they haven’t even voiced out loud yet...*cries*

“Only twenty minutes to sleep But you dream of some epiphany Just one single glimpse of relief To make some sense of what you've seen

“With you, I serve With you, I fall down Down Watch you breathin' Watch you breathin' out Out“

invisible strings makes me think of Shirbert/Anne and Gilbert. I love the pluck of guitar strings and how it has this air of innocence and sunshine and green grasses about it even though it’s being told/sung from a hilltop of experience. There’s so much imagery in this song, so much color and figurative language, that I can’t help but think it’s perfect for our imaginative dreamy-eyed girl and the boy who’s adored her since he first tugged her pigtails and called her Carrots in that schoolroom:

“Green was the color of the grass Where I used to read at Centennial Park >> (Can’t you just picture Anne lying in the grass, a book in her hand, flowers in her hair?) I used to think I would meet somebody there Teal was the color of your shirt When you were sixteen at the yogurt shop“

“Time, curious time Gave me no compasses, gave me no signs Were there clues I didn't see?“

“Wool to brave the seasons One single thread of gold Tied me to you“ >> (Love the warmth and vibrancy of this. The wool makes me think of Avonlea blanketed in snow; the gold has me drinking sunshine, smelling goldenrod in October)

“Time, wondrous time Gave me the blues and then purple-pink skies“

“And isn't it just so pretty to think All along there was some Invisible string Tying you to me?“ (Love the idea of the string representing their friendship, how it never snipped. How it only braided together, growing tauter, closer, all the time.)

august hits me with a waterfall of Darvey/Donna and Harvey feels. There’s a wistfulness about this song that settles in my gut, twisting it with longing, with musings of all those Almosts in relationships that were so close to coming to fruition then never did. It’s so incredibly reminiscent of how Donna and Harvey toe the lie between friends and almost lovers who-are-nearly-there-but-not-quite for 12 years. IT HURTS SO GOOD.

“Back when we were still changin' for the better >> (THIS IS SO EMOTIONALLY RESONANT IT HURTS) Wanting was enough For me, it was enough To live for the hope of it all Canceled plans just in case you'd call”

But I can see us lost in the memory August slipped away into a moment in time 'Cause it was never mine And I can see us twisted in bedsheets August sipped away like a bottle of wine 'Cause you were never mine >> (Obviously I’m swimming in the angst of this until my fingers get all pruny.)

Finally there’s mirrorball which is Jisbon/Jane and Lisbon all the way! It’s funny because when I first listened to Folkore I thought that’d be one of the last songs I’d pair with a ship?? YET HERE I AM. Jane was in the carnival circuit growing up and I cannot, for the life of me, stop attaching him to all the descriptions of the circus/revelry. So much of his schtick throughout the show comes down to trickery and observation, which he uses to size people up, and sarcasm, which he often employs as a defense mechanism to keep people at an emotional distance. I like the theme of this song for him and Lisbon. As the mirrorball, he’s shining his true self only for her. She’s the only person who sees his “shattered edges”; she’s not distracted by all his “glistening.” Here are my favorite lyrics that are applicable to them:

“I'm a mirrorball I'll show you every version of yourself tonight

“I can change everything about me to fit in You are not like the regulars The masquerade revelers Drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten” >> (Okay, so this makes me think Jane’s on camera confession to Erica Flynn: “I’m looking for someone who…uh, someone I can trust. Someone strong. Someone at peace with themselves. Someone better than me. Someone who knows the…worst side of me and still loves me.")

“And they called off the circus, burned the disco down When they sent home the horses and the rodeo clowns I'm still on that tightrope I'm still trying everything to get you laughing at me”

“I'm still on that trapeze I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me“

I do, but my ships are very sad because someone always ends up dead. :/

I used to be a huge part of the Torchwood/Doctor Who fandom, and I shipped Captain Jack/Ianto, then Ianto died. I shipped Will/Alicia like FUCK in The Good Wife, then Will died. I shipped Carrie/Quinn in Homeland since way before it was a thing on the show because I love Peter Quinn to bits - then he died. Do you see the pattern? :(

I think I owe the Klaroline fandom an apology. It’s totally my fault that Klaus died because apparently I CAN’T HAVE A GODDAMN HAPPY ENDING.

I low-key ship Jaime/Brienne in GoT. Let’s watch that. -_-

1. Your current OTP(s)/OT3(s)/OTX(s)

Well... I’m currently watching “Victoria” and it’s hard to choose from Vicbourne and Ernest & Harriet. But when it comes to OTP that I’m currently obssesing over, that would be undoubtedly Jaime & Brienne (GoT).

2. A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind (bonus points: who was that person).

Sansa & Littlefinger. I was completely repulsed by this idea at first, but later came to love them and they became one of my most important GoT ships.

3. A pairing you used to love, but it all fell apart for you.

I can agree here with @frombothofmyhearts - at the beginning of HP books I shipped Harry and Hermione, later I had no idea why on Earth I ever saw them together. From the more recent fandoms, I would say Jorah and Daenerys - I mean I still do ship them, but they used to be my OTP and now I don’t really care.

4. Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what.

Don’t think so, sadly I’m not a funny person.

5. What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom

Harry Potter, definitely, if you can say I’m in a fandom since the moment I fell in love with the books. That would be seventeen years.

6. Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it.

That is a difficult question... My first OTPs came from Polish soap operas, but since no one would know what I’m talking about I’ll focus on something well known and that would be either HP (Lupin & Tonks), LOTR (Aragorn & Arwen or Eowyn & Faramir) or “House M.D.” (Foreteen). When it comes to level of devotion that shoul go with real OTP, I would choose Foreteen.

7. Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr.

"Once Upon a Time” - I had no idea about the show until I saw it here. And it was everywhere, really.

8. Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike)

That’s difficult. I wanted to say something GoT-related, but I found myself either liking someone at least a little bit or hating them so much I cannot say anything nice about them. Ooh, I have it, from another fandom! Elizabeth Swann and William Turner - I don’t like both of them, but they know how to love each other and they would do a lot for this love. Although sometimes they forget about it, especially in AWE...

9. Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)

I’ll stick to PoTC - more James Norrington love, more Davy Jones appreciation, more respect for my favorite parts of the movies (DMC & AWE).

10. Choose a song at random, which ship or character does it remind you of

I just saw Dream Theater and “Sacrifised Sons”. The title brought a lot of GoT connections - the Second Sons, the Starks, Jaime & Tyrion.

11. A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships

I think my only ship that could fall into this category would be Cam & Sweets from “Bones”.

12. Your most scandalous headcanon for your current OTP(s)/OT3(s)/OTX(s)

Scandalous? I can see that in “Victoria” - both of my ships eloping and living happily ever after away from all this ruling and this life they’re living... Would definitely be scandalous in XIX century, given their position.

13. Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)

Maybe only that Klaroline (TVD) is and always will be the endgame, no matter how long it takes.

Every single one has a special place in my heart, but if I had to choose they would be the ships from above, Klaroline (TVD) and Foreteen because of the nostalgy mostly.

17. Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go (prompts optional but encouraged)

I’m just fed up with most of the regular shows nowadays. They all go the same roads of misery and despair, constant plotting and destroying of the relationships (I do understand that happiness might not be the most popular thing in the world, but come on, sometimes someone is happy, the world is not all dark and gloom). Some of them start great, but then get extended beyond the point of logic and the writers screw everything up. Everything should have its end and it would be best if the end came in the highest and not lowest point of the series. The best example - “Grey’s Anatomy”. I loved the show, but now it’s a caricature of itself. The characters are the bunch of selfish people who don’t care about anything else but themselves, and mostly they even forgot they are doctors, behaving like five-year-olds. Just finish this show already!

TVD/TO - Klaroline - Klaus Mikaelson/Caroline Forbes - Post-Liz’s death and Caroline flipping her humanity switch. She books it out of Mystic Falls. Calls Klaus.

2) Can you hold me close (can you love me most)

GoT/ASOIAF - Braime/JB - Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth - Post-The Bang That Was Promised. Brienne ruminating over her feelings for Jaime, over this time with him.

3) When All Sense Breaks Loose

Gilmore Girls - Literati - Rory Gilmore/Jess Mariano - Rory and Jess strolling through Stars Hollow at Christmastime, perhaps finding themselves beneath some mistletoe.

4) A Call That Angers, A Moment That Exposes

(I’m genuinely surprised how much people like this one because - eh - not my best writing, imo. I mean, the title alone should clue you into that. I just sort of slapped it on there for an exchange lmao.)

TVD/TO - Klaroline - Klaus Mikaelson/Caroline Forbes - Post 5x06 of TO with Klaus and Caroline on a road trip looking for Hope. Overnight pitstop. Only one bed.

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I always respond to comments because a) I’m exceedingly flattered and grateful for feedback b) I love interacting with readers c) I can’t hold back my excitement when people tell me what resonated or what they enjoyed

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Oof, that’s a tough one. I’m temped to say The Day They Thought The Saddest Lines or As He Lay Dying because they’re both KC drabbles that revolve around Klaus’ canon death, so they’re both rather wistful and fraught and depressing on the whole. Leave it to me to swim in the hurt!

However, the When White Wind Whistles, which is a canon-ish Jaime/Brienne oneshot set during the war with the dead where the two of them share the same bed, the same warmth, with their feelings laying there between them, unspoken, is atmospherically and emotionally chafing. There’s this sense that they could die before ever voicing their feelings. It’s just--*clenches chest*

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Probably Like A Calendar, The Heart Skips Forward because it shows an established relationship between Rory and Jess. It’s New Years Eve. There’s books and food and alcohol and familiarity. Did I mention there’s an engagement? Because there’s an engagement.

7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Haven’t yet, nope.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yeah. It happens.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Not really. I have a tendency to write perpendicular to smut. I’m not opposed to writing it if it feels right, but I guess I’m more interested in exploring the emotion/tension in different dynamics right now.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not on AO3. Now, when I was posting most everything to FFnet--yes.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have! (Spite) of Their Lives (another KC oneshot - surprise! surprise!) was translated into Chinese, which I thought was pretty cool.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not on AO3. I have done a few buddy drabbles on Tumblr, though, which were fun. A unique experience, for sure.

13. What’s your all time favorite ship?

I have a boatload of OTPs so this seems like a cruel question lol.

Luke and Lorelai from Gilmore Girls will always have a top tier place in my heart, though. And Klaroline comprises the majority of my fics on both AO3 and FFnet--so there’s that. Love those two idiots.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Oh gosh, I have so many it’s abominable! I’m the worst. Give me the crown.

I have a modern Jaime/Brienne as roommates AU. It’s a sort of progression-of-feelings-and-kisses fic. 50% done. I also have half of a part 2 to Can you hold me close (can you love me most) that I still haven’t finished.

I also have a Hybrid Nightline oneshot that’s partly written. Klaus and Caroline are rival dream sculptors whose offices have been consolidated and now must learn to work together.

I have 75% of Musician/Celebrity AU written for Klaroline as well. It could be so. much. fun. if only I could get the plot to cooperate with my vision.

(Maybe if I write them all down I’ll feel guilty enough to finish a couple of them.)

15. What are your writing strengths?

Being able to portray characters’ emotion and conflicts, maybe? I’m definitely more of a character-driven writer than a plot-driven one.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Timeliness - as in getting shit written in a timely manner. I have so many WIPs I have yet to finish because I can’t seem to find the time to devote to them. *cries* (Adulting is hard folks!)

Also, sometimes I really struggle with working around plot blocks.

Dialogue tags are a nightmare, too. I want to use them to convey state of mind, emotion, not to mention to denote who is speaking, but I don’t want to overruse them, either.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

So long as I’m confident that I know the language well enough to do it, or know someone who can check my grammar, then YES. I’ve written Spanish dialogue before. French too, I believe.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Back in the day, Gilmore Girls or Harry Potter. On AO3, probably Klaroline.

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

You know, I’m going to have to say Defibrillation which is for The Good Doctor - Melendaire - Claire Browne/Neil Melendez. It was a canon fix-it I wrote for a friend who also loved the show. It was evocative as it needed to be, angsty too, and it just flowed from beginning to end. I’m satisfied with it on the whole, which is not something I say about my writing often. Or ever, frankly haha.

I am absolutely in love with your blog! Books, klaroline, taylor swift and so much more that you post! I wish I had a friend like you in real life! I am curious though what is your favorite TS album? And song? Do you have a ranking?? Do you associate any song with your favorite book? I am always associating songs with favorite characters and make scenarios about klaroline in my head (embarrassing I know!)

I’m really touched by that, thank you. 🥰 I’m glad you like it here and that I haven’t scared you away with my spam posts or my tag nonsense yet (because there’s a lot of both haha). I think it would be awesome to be friends with someone like you irl. Since we seem to enjoy so many of the same things, we’d probably never run out of things to talk about. It’s a shame so many cool people live far away, isn’t it? We can be virtual besties, for sure, though! I always have room in my life another lovely person. ❤️

Oh gosh, it’s so SO hard for me to pick a favorite TS album. I’ve been a Swiftie since the beginning. I’m the same age as Taylor - both of us are born in 89 - so I almost feel like I grew up alongside her and her music. A lot of what she was writing about feeling in her songs I was experiencing myself at the exact same time so whenever I hear certain ones, like You Belong With Me, for instance, I can close my eyes and drift back to that particular time in my life. It’s like I’m there again. But then there’s also this sense of wistfulness, too, you know? Because I’ve grown into myself more and changed a lot along the way but I still remember how it felt to be my younger self. To feel the potency of everything - heartbreak, disappointment, infatuation, butterflies - so acutely. I love her music for being to do that, you know? Push me forward while also reeling me back.

On the whole, though, if I had to pick, I think I’d say Folklore and Evermore are my favorites. I’m a lyricist at heart and I just loved seeing how much her writing and poetry blossomed in those albums. Her story telling was just exceptional, it was on another level. And lately, like everyone else on the planet, I’ve been re-obsessed with Red. The initial release of that album in 2012 helped me get over a terrible heartbreak, my first love, so obviously that one holds a special place for me. That whole album is like a goddamn open wound. Still. After all these years. I REMEMBER IT ALL TOO WELL MYSELF. 😄😭

I don’t have a ranking for her discography overall, though. Not a favorite song, either. I’m very much a mood listener so I tend to gravitate toward certain songs or albums depending on where I’m at emotionally. Or, you know, if I’m writing and need/want to get into a particular headspace. I also jam to her faster-paced stuff at the gym while I do cardio a lot. I love running to The Man, I Forgot You Existed, You Need to Calm Down, I Did Something Bad, Blank Space, etc. And when I’m feeling nostalgic and want to reeeeally sink into it I will listen to songs from Fearless and Speak Now that remind me of VERY particular people from my past. Sometimes to remember, other times to torture myself lol. I will also love Teardrops on my Guitar and Tim McGraw into perpetuity. There’s such an innocence to those songs, it reminds me of my own as a teenager.

Oh honey, take heart. Associating songs with favorite characters, ships, or books is a favorite pastime of mine as well and I am constantly composing little stories for them in my head. So fear not, you are not alone! I definitely have a treasure trove of TS songs I associate with Klaroline, too. And Literati from Gilmore Girls. And Pacey and Joey from Dawson’s Creek. And Jaime and Brienne from GoT. And Jisbon from the Mentalist. And Shirbert from Anne of Green Gables. And Darcy and Elizabeth from P&P. And so on and so forth. (You see the problem here. 😆)
