"I played Chopin's Nocturne Op 9 No.2 on fretless bass!"
From Youtube channel CharlesBerthoud: Chopin Nocturne on fretless bass actually sounds SUBLIME
Sounds sublime indeed
Enjoy...
Looks gorgeous, feels silky. The new black knobs just look classy. It’s got a set of GHS Balanced short-scale nickel roundwounds on it.
A few things noted:
The Hipshot Ultralite keys just clear the headstock. Technically not an issue, but aesthetically I’ll have to see if they have buttons with longer stems.
The Hipshot triple string retainer doesn’t really work on smaller instruments like this, so they left the stock D & G string retainer in place.
Weirdly, the baseplate on the Kahler 2440 bridge seems narrower than the same one I had on my other bass; not a lot of room to adjust string spacing. I’ll have to measure and compare.
The stock screws that come with the Delano pickups don’t let you raise them very much, if you want to have them closer to the strings, so you might need to find replacements that are 1/8”-1/4” longer.

Have you ever wondered why guitars have frets and violins do not? I didn’t think so. I guess I better tell you what a fret is now. A fret is a thin strip of metal than runs perpendicular to the strings on a guitar. In theory it makes it easier to play a correct note. On a fretless instrument you have to rely in your ear and not a fret to play the correct note.
I do not own a violin but I spent a…

To see her kicking the shit out of every bass line she attacks is happy-making. Girl, slay. 💀
Not just standard basses. She pulls out the hugest, most impressive bass imaginable:
Her hands aren’t big enough to lay across all 5 strings yet👆
And her tiny hands know how to blow the shit out of that bass. Wig officially snatched.
What makes it so impressive:
1. This is a mammoth bass. Especially in her arms??? All her other basses look relatively normal-ish in her hands by comparison.
Seriously, look at that stretch 👆
2. It’s a 5-string bass, where the average bass is a 4-string. Hence its mammoth size. Makes the width and length of the neck and overall body size of the instrument larger. And her tiny little hands are like meh, what, am I not supposed to be able to play this thing?
5-string vs 4-string regular bass.
3. She’s playing a fretless bass!!!!!! There are no frets!!!! No frets! On that huge neck!!!!
No frets vs shit-tons of frets.
Her hands have to be able to move so far so fast (bcz it’s five-string) that she can’t really rely on the distance between her fingers, and therefore muscle memory, to hit the correct notes/progressions exactly in key without having frets to show her exactly where the notes are. She’s jumping all over the place, and she just knows where the notes are by looking at it. Without frets!!! Unbelievable!!! Prolly better at that than most people with adult hands will ever be. Most bassists playing fretless frequently will hit a note sliiiiightly off (a teeny bit sharp or flat) and then roll their finger a little into correct position. She doesn’t have to do that! She hits her notes square on the head. Unbelievable.
Child got lucky with an apparently very successful musician dad who has a huge music studio and like 600 big, sonorous basses for her to play with. 🪦
I was once asked to make a bass inspired by a curve in a road that meant a lot to the customer. The outline of this would certainly make a good race track. Trying to race around this unmarked short scale fret less fingerboard takes natural skill much like racing driving. You have to pay attention and if you are focused on being in tune you are no longer focused on the conditioned ideas about life. And the only problem you have left is your intonation. So your best bet is either acceptance. Or practice.
