Etymology of ‘adios’ and ‘adieu’

adios (interj.)

1837, American English, from Spanish adios, from phrase a dios vos acomiendo "I commend you to God;" the French form is adieu (q.v.).

adieu (interj.)

late 14c., adewe, from Old French a Dieu, a Deu, shortened from phrases such as a dieu (vous) commant "I commend (you) to God," from a "to" (see ad-) + dieu "God," from Latin deum, accusative of deus "god" (from PIE *deiwos "god" (from root *dyeu- "to shine").

Originally it was said to the party left (farewell was to the party setting forth), but in English it came to be used as a general parting salutation. As a noun, "expression of kind wishes upon departure," late 14c. Compare the native parting salutation good-bye, a contraction of God be with ye.

That Adieu gifset you reblogged made me realize we didn't get any clone Richard closeups. Did he say no to being covered in slime? 🤣

Now that you're saying, you're right!!

From what we can see in the video, Richard only kneels in front of his supposed 'container' with his clone as Schneider bends down to comfort him. So we know there must exist a clone of him, but it's not really shown.

No idea why we didn't get any close ups of him, since everyone else got them. Maybe he either just didn't like the way he looked/was self-conscious, or health issues, dramaturgical reasons... the list of possibilities could be endless 👀

Adieu itself is such an interesting music video and I have to admit, I still didn't get the meaning fully. There are references to the Mutter album, to death and transience of life, success in life and how big/out of hand it can get, the guys in the containers could represent their clones for the future or maybe they're the real Rammboys and the guys entering the vaults are the clones...? Setting the supposed clones aflame - an act of freeing themselves or necessary for some higher goal? You see, my head is spinning with thoughts and theories about this, and now there's another one added on top with Richard not really showing as a slimy clone 😅

Adieu

I have a few things that I just wanna write down :D I'm not saying anything is right, but it's "fun" to think about.

They never make it into the chamber. They all died beforehand on the stairs or right in front of the door in Flake's case. They wanted the clones / or real R+ to die, but they never got to it. (Like Haifisch solves Till's death in the end - nothing we had seen beforehand had been true either)

Only looking at Till's hair it's like Seemann!Till in hell. So maybe back then they felt like they were in hell. Ichwill!Till is trying to get to the Mutter Chamber. But in statis it looks like actual Till.

The LIFAD 6 on the license plate is amazing. It show that all of them deserve (the same) love. And the way they stand together during burning the other Rammsteins? The way they're holding each other? But in the end they all die alone. Exactly as the song goes.

Could also be that Rammstein wanted to kill their old versions. They jump into hell to get to the Seemann versions (which video they hated) and they also killed the whole mutter thing (their biggest fight we know of). BUT the seeman versions already had freed themselves and we see the first ones are actually dead in the end. Could be a reset kinda.

In the end the right light goes out after they are all dead -> The end of something?

Or the clones were the ones who wanted to kill the real ones. But they didn't succeed so Rammstein are still in stasis waiting to come back as another version of clones again.

Again just my silly thoughts. But I really loved it.
