There’s something about contemporary French female pop musicians, they’re in a ‘fuck you’ class of their own, creating intelligent, innovative and often physically visceral music. Following in Camille’s footsteps, there’s Héloïse Létissier, performing as Christine and the Queens, and Jehnny Beth, previously the lead singer for Savages, who released her solo debut earlier this year. And my current new fave, Marie Davidson, who is Canadian, but French-Canadian at least. There ends my TED talk on French female musicians. Let’s focus on this 2008 album from Camille. Its title, Music Hole, refers to her mouth and presumably other parts of her body with which she uses to make music. She is a remarkable vocalist, with a wide range, and innovative use of a capella, beat-boxing and a whole zoo’s worth of animal noises. That might sound too self-consciously ‘alternative’ and unlistenable, but what makes this album so good, are her lyrics and innate sense of fun. She clearly doesn’t take herself too seriously and most tracks are upbeat with surprising twists and turns – such as her piss-take on Mariah Carey on the Money Note, or the song Cats and Dogs which is literally about cats and dogs. Almost all the songs are sung in English, compared to her first two solo albums in French. And whereas Camille doesn’t have the profile of an artist like Björk, whose a capella album Medúlla this has been likened to, Music Hole was her breakout release outside France. She’s a very different artist to Björk though and her singing and the arrangements are much more organic, earthy somehow, it relates very acutely to her performances. An experience I’d liken to Pina Bausch’s choreography to The Rite of Spring.
