Here is one of many historic objects held in the collections of the Harbor Defense Museum, Fort Hamilton, NY and highlights women in the Army. This is a necklace of twenty-eight (28) foreign coins joined together with wire through holes drilled in the coins. The donor, Technician Fourth Grade (T/4) Ruth Tenzer (bassoonist) was a member of the 401st Women’s Army Corp (WAC) Band stationed at USAG Fort Hamilton. During World War II each branch of the military had all-female bands, which performed martial duties and supplied Soldiers with morale boosting music. The U.S. Army fielded five such bands: the 400th, 401st, 402nd, 403rd, and the 404th WAC (Army Service Forces) Bands. The 404th being the only all-female, African American band in military history. In February 1944, the 401st WAC Band arrived at USAG Fort Hamilton, New York. Afterwards, it was redesignated as the 401st Army Service Forces (ASF) Band, which consisted of twenty-nine (29) professional musicians, possessing considerable musical experience in civilian life. The 401st ASF Band often performed from greeting vessels, which followed the troopships arriving at NYC’s Harbor, lifting the spirits of homeward bound Service Personnel. As the men cheered, a few Soldiers tossed coins towards the band. Mrs. Tenzer collected some of the gifted coins and made this necklace. This one-of-a-kind souvenir! Soon after the end of World War II, all women’s military bands were deactivated except for the 400th ASF Band, which was re-designated the 14th Army Band (WAC) in 1948 at Fort Meade, Maryland. The 14th Army Band (WAC) lasted until 1976. Good evening, folks! It's time for another #HarborDefenseHappyBirthday ! We would like to wish a Happy 266th... or 268th... Birthday to Revolutionary War Artilleryman, Financial Wiz, and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton! He was born on January 11th, on or about 1755...or 1757. 1756? Who knows?? While his life and career are well studied and spoken of, we mention him here today as he is the namesake of Fort Hamilton, New York. Located in Brooklyn, it comprises one half of "The Narrows," opposite Staten Island - and Fort Wadsworth. The natural promontory between the two makes a natural choke point - and a perfect defensive location. Fort Hamilton had gun emplacements from 1825 onwards, first with masonry fortifications and then concrete batteries in the late 1890s. (Pic 2) Photos 3-5 show the Post from the air, as well as one of the Engineering maps. Fort Hamilton holds the unique honor of being the last active Army Post in the installations that comprised the Harbor Defenses of New York. Regrettably, it is also the least intact. This Fourth of July artist Molly Surazhsky staged an intervention at the Fort Hamilton Army Base in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY. With the work ‘Miss Americhka,’ Surazhsky draws inspiration from a photograph of her grandmother adorned in a Statue of Liberty crown taken in the 1970’s after her arrival to the United States from Soviet Ukraine. The title ‘Miss Americhka’ is inspired by her grandmother’s ecstatic proclamations “God Bless Americhka,” delivered with a strong Russian inflection. Amidst the backdrop of a proxy war with Russia, Surazhsky gently pokes fun at the United States’ military industrial complex by quite literally and pervasively stroking a massive Rodman gun cannon that stands atop a hill overlooking the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Furthermore, Surazhsky comments on the current state of extreme political polarization in the United States through the use of a civil war era cannon as a prop and images of First Lady Michelle Obama embracing President George W. Bush, amongst others. Molly Surazhsky (b. Queens, NY, 1992) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and Los Angeles, CA. As a child of Ukrainian émigrés, Surazhsky’s practice is tinged with an inherited Post-Soviet cynicism, the same underlying attitude, which emerges in her ongoing study of the corporatization of working class lives.
