FORREST:

*Pauses*

*Thinks. Tries to process her thoughts. Gets distressed. Finally turns around and walks away*

God, I don’t care!”

That’s SO Faith. That’s what her reaction would be entirely!

All I see is Faith here. I see no Buffy even though it’s Buffy’s body. That’s how good of an actress Gellar is. The way Gellar played that. Reacted to him in a way she knows Buffy never would have reacted to him. The way the eyebrows move and the creases in the forehead show up. He clearly hit a nerve in her and rather than spend the time to figure out why that is, she just shuts out her emotions. Even in somebody else’s body she’s still uncomfortable and unsatisfied with who she is.

Buffy wouldn’t talk like that. Wouldn’t move her body or face like that. Likely wouldn’t even answer to Forrest’s comment at all. In fact Buffy wouldn’t have given a shit what Forrest thought. The most she would have done in reaction to his comment would be to scoff then turn around and walk away.

But that just shows how well Gellar has got Faith’s mannerisms down. Facial expressions and everything. Tone, vibe. Her entire energy. It’s just spot on Faith’s reaction every bit of this performance. She’s fucking incredible in this episode as Faith. She’s so damn convincing portraying Faith that she makes Faith’s portrayal of Buffy seem so damn unconvincing. And therefore shows just how much Faith doesn’t know herself and doesn’t understand her own feelings. Has 0 self-awareness and self-security. It’s bloody brilliant. Figures Faith would only come to terms with just how much she hates herself while she’s escaping from it. And as soon as she’s back in her own body, she doesn’t know what to do with herself but just rinse and repeat. If she can’t face the trauma and the pain what else can she do but purposefully self-destruct? That’s what she’s always done.

It takes a lot of self-reflection to truly know one’s self and become at peace with being it. Faith never gives herself the time, patience or opportunity to truly learn who she is. She’s always too busy crawling into someone else’s skin in effort to distract herself from it. And as disturbing as it is, I really do think it’s genius writing how Faith takes advantage of Riley while in Buffy’s body. Therefore taking advantage of the BOTH of Riley and Buffy. Because it doesn’t matter whether she’s wearing somebody else’s body or thrusting herself on top of it or even all at the same time, the whole point is that she doesn’t have to see herself. Doesn’t have to face herself. Because then that means self-reflection. And she wants to avoid doing that at all costs because she’s afraid of what she will reveal.

And Gellar 100% knows how to portray that complex in her. Knows that that’s what the character Faith would do. Instead of self-reflect, deflect and then self-destruct.

Faith’s the kinda girl to wear 25 different faces all at once and not a single one of them is her own. Yet because of that, you can see right through her. Then you look at somebody like Tara,… and while she also harbour insecurities about herself… every single time, the face that reacts when they’re brought to the surface is always her own because she’s always self-reflecting. Faith is more like Willow. Shows you who she wants you to see rather than who she actually is. It’s always a performance. It’s always a way to escape from or avoid self-reflection, and therefore self-growth. The only real difference is Faith chooses offence instead of defence. She prefers to act out rather than cover up. To attack rather than hide away. But it’s all the same to someone like me who has played both sides of the chessboard of identity and came up the loser no matter what strategy I tried to win the game with. Whether it be internalizing or externalizing, it doesn’t matter. Neither works. Neither are a solution or fix. Reflection is the way to go. It’s hard and it’s gruelling but it’s fucking necessary. It has to be done. It is much more worth it to do the hard work required and to meet the pain and the trauma head on rather than waste time and energy trying to escape from or avoid it because all that tends to do is just make it so much worse.

People try relentlessly to either be somebody that they’re not or distract themselves from themselves. But you can’t escape from or avoid being yourself. It is relatively impossible. And lying does you no good either. Better to be honest. With yourself as well as everybody else because it’s you that has to face yourself no matter what in the end. Delaying the process only ensures one thing. That it’s much more difficult to do everything else. Faith believes letting loose and going wild is the easy way out of her pain and trauma. But it only makes it harder to handle the next time something bad happens. She’s making things much more difficult to deal with in the long run by escaping and avoiding dealing with it now.

And the fact that that’s only realized while in somebody else’s body is storytelling poetry.

Book Review

Having once read “The Rise and Fall of Practically Everyone” I went into this non-fiction book expecting a little bit of humor and schadenfreude. Instead what I got was a dry, horrifying, but extremely educational lesson on what happens when you put the wrong men in charge during an armed conflict. 

The book is organized into 5 parts each one featuring 3 commanders. The parts are listed in this order: Criminals, Frauds, The Clueless, Politicians, and Bunglers. Criminals are men for whom killing and torturing alleged enemies, allies, and definitely-not-combatants took higher priority than accomplishing objectives. Frauds lied about their expertise and people believed them at great cost. The Clueless operated on delusional beliefs regarding the enemies capabilities and their own forces. Politicians had to make decisions based on the politics of their society and the strategies in-use during the conflict they engaged in, and they chose poorly. Finally, Bunglers tried their best, it was nowhere near good enough, and they even admitted it (if they survived). These categories were formed by the editors while sorting submissions from historians who were simply assigned to write about the worst commander within the purview of their studies.

I don’t know if it’s problematic or good marketing to place the War-Criminals at the start of the anthology. It will certainly shock and resonate with a reader, at the cost of making one forget about the less outrageous subjects.  This probably isn’t an issue for a diligent reader, which I confess to not always being.

 The specific commanders are all men who have a lot of written evidence condemning them. But in the foreword, the editors say that the Third Reich (and other World War 2 fascists) have already been extensively examined. The purpose of this book was to focus on lesser known or unjustly revered men. Hence half the subjects being American or British. Some names, like George Custer and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna are relatively well known to Americans like myself. Others are more obscure (to me) such as Roman Fedorovich von Ungern-Sternberg, Nikias, or Nogi Maresuke. 

As a creative resource, this book is perfect for military-focused authors who need references for incompetent and/or evil leadership that is realistic. I haven’t read every single work of military-fiction but I imagine there is a tendency to portray military commanders as brilliant but cruel. Hopefully this book makes an argument that cruelty does not equate to intelligence. And that really interesting drama takes place when plans do not go smoothly at all because the person who were in-charge were inept for one reason or another.

Hey Tennessee fandom people: the ELVIS Act getting ready to go through. It prevents you from using likenesses of Public Figures and their voices. It's Supposed to target AI of musicians and actors but it's written So Broadly that it can effect things like Political News Reporting, Political Parody, AMVs, Fan Edits, and of course Fan Art. It's not limited to Tennessee households either so a Hollywood company can relocate a headquarters or branch to Tennessee and use Tennessee law to sue people outside the state.

If you care about any of that, then look up your county's/district's representatives in the Tennessee Senate and House and start calling. It's headed to General Assembly.

Specifically the bill says - no one can use a famous person's likeness or voice without that actor's permission for the actors life plus 10 years - .

You can see how likeness and voice can be broadly applied and of course fans would never be able to get permission for fan content.

Surely you can see how this would affect amvs and fan edits on places like Instagram.

It would also affect things like Fan Art for Live Action Series.

This would limit free use for things like parody which would effect comedy too.

It's named after Elvis and claims to be for the entertainment industry but it's written so broadly so that it can be used by public figures in general. So Politicians would be covered under it.

Honestly politicians are trying to get this passed in Tennessee to limit the use of their own likenesses for things like memes because it's a fairly easy state to get ultra conservative bullshit passed.

Here's some more info from Real Clear Policy writer Hannah Cox:

Right of publicity laws typically include stringent, clear exceptions and only apply to advertising, merchandise, and fundraising purposes. Those exceptions are for “newsworthy” images in content that provides a “public interest,” which encompasses everything from hard news to documentaries, to satire, to celebrity gossip.

This is a fantastic structure that ensures an individual has a right to their own personhood while also upholding the First Amendment, its protections for free expression and freedom of the press, and ensuring the public has easy, fast access to information.

The ELVIS Act doesn’t include these provisions. As currently written, filmmakers would have to obtain permission from nefarious actors like Jeffrey Epstein’s estate in order to make a documentary about him. The producers of Forrest Gump wouldn’t be able to include all those scenes with historic figures. 

That’s a really good way to protect powerful people from scrutiny. And it would severely stagnate the flow of information online as even obtaining such permissions could take weeks. Additionally, out of fear, many content creators would simply play it safe out of fear of litigation.

The ELVIS Act also does not limit its reach to those living or dead, nor does it restrict its parameters to those with a Tennessee domicile. This seems like an open plea for people to infiltrate the state with ridiculous lawsuits that wouldn’t make it past the first gate elsewhere. It’s almost like the trial lawyers associations wrote this bill instead of Hollywood unions.

But to be clear, this was brought to the Republican legislature by the music industry associations and Hollywood unions - a peculiar entity for conservative lawmakers to be carrying water for to say the least. What these entities really want is an end to Fair Use practices because they’re bleeding money, and instead of making better products or creating new revenue sources, they’re simply being lazy and attempting to restrict the market.

When you call: You're a concerned republican worried about how limiting AI can hurt small business and how the law should be written more specifically and Exceptions Should be included To Protect Fair Use for Non-Commercial, News, and Parody use, because all are integral to Free Speech.

The Law is Simply Too Broad the way that it's written now and it limits Facebook campaign support for Republicans if they have to get permission from Liberals to use their likenesses. It limits free speech which is integral to preaching God's good word against his disbelievers in a political setting and you won't stand by a politician that limits your freedoms like that. This is America Land of the Free and you'll be damned if you let someone step on you like that. That its Big Government infringing on your rights as an American instead of sensible small government.

If you dont live in Tennesse this will still affect you with the ways it's written. It doesn't take much for companies to set up "official" shop in a new state.

It will also ABSOLUTELY be used as the model for a much worse NATIONAL bill if it gets passed in Tennessee. Because Politicians will see that it already succeeded once and HollyWood and the Music Industry are two lobbies FLUSH with cash for bribes and campaign donations.

Mark my words this will absolutely bleed over into national politics which will be devastating for News Reporting and informing the populace which is ALREADY in awful shape.

Every so often whenever Gale gets excited his hands seem to wander though this does not apply to everyone in camp, not to even mention the time Karlach was on the recieving end of this treatment— at least you got practice in healing magic that day despite Gale's protests that it's fine.

But his hands always wander to you. Holding your hands whenever you're out and about as he scans the Forrest or the streets of Baldurs gate his hand never leaves yours. You lead the team wherever you deem needed with such confidence it baffles him how easily and quickly you adapt to, anything. You're keenly aware of what everyone wants or needs to hear, you talk potential enemies into corners and the spirit you fight with to protect the people around you truly amazes the Wizard.

A night is usually spent by you two sitting in each other's tents while talking about your day as you debrief, you reluctantly sit back when he agrees to cook dinner for everyone and you sit together while you eat. The camp is honestly starting to get agitated with the knowing glances and wandering eyes the both of you share, Wyll has to physically hold Astorian back on occasion so no vulgar language is used.

As you sit in his Tent, hands in your lap when you sit almost too close to Gale you barely look over his shoulder while you read from the book he has sitting in his hands— disrupting him when you groan while leaning back "Gale this position really hurts my back" and when his eyes scan you he realizes not everyone can just sit hunched over for hours so he racks his brain to find a solution for your dilemma not at all wanting you to leave "How about we, lay down?" You snort as you fall onto the bedroll behind you "you're gonna hold the book while we lay here" with a quick and easy Yup he makes his place beside you but before he can even pick up his book you nearly shout for his full attention as you suddenly lose the words your brain had thought of for this exact conversation, clearing your throat when you try and save this horrible attempt at a love confession

"we've spent alot of time together and I love being around you—"

Your eyes fixed on the top of the tent as you continue with a shaky sigh

"and I don't know if I misread us but I think you feel the same way I do"

Gobsmacked is the best word to use for Gale at the moment, His eyes wide and his lips slightly parted as his breath hitches while he looks at you. You're absolutely terrified and your brain floods with doubt and shame as you don't break your gaze from him, on cue he noticed the glossy film that shone your beautiful eyes as he sits up almost giving himself whiplash as he stumbles on his words for once

"no! No— you haven't. it's very much reciprocated, I just didn't think we'd ever talk about"

The smile that dawns your face after your confession was received well could rival the beauty of the finest diamonds. He grins like an idiot as he once again makes his place next to you, pulling you into his embrace,he rests his chin on the top of your head. One hand cradling your head the other holding the esteemed book
