Happy Monday, all! Once again, we’ve survived another week. But I’m feeling good (cue driving guitar hits by Muse (my favorite version)). The weather in the Pacific Northwest has been simply superb for autumn photographing (look for a post on that later this week); the rains haven’t quite settled in yet. So we’ve been able to get outside and enjoy it in full. I love this time of year.

This also happens to be a very busy time (when is it not?). Between playing outside while we can, demanding projects at work (yes, believe it or not, I do have a day job, though I wish I could be a full time photographer!), and running the multimedia department for the rapidly approaching Kumoricon, my life has been insanely crazy. So I have just this one image that I posted on 500px this week.This photo has a fun story behind it. We were attempting to locate a really cool overhang nook in the side of a cliff in Canyonlands National Park for sunset, recommended by a friend. Unfortunately, we made the mistake of relying on a webpage for the hike directions. This didn’t work so well in the park, where we quickly lost all cell service.

First, we went the wrong direction entirely, just to get to the trailhead. We eventually found it, but as we neared the cliff edge, we lost the trail and couldn’t find the next cairn to point us in the right direction. Without the website, we were on our own, wandering aimlessly in an ever widening radius from the last cairn.

As the sun inexorably sank toward the horizon, we became more desperate to locate our destination. We climbed on top of rocks and around outcroppings to get back on track – to no avail. I ultimately had to give up (not something I do easily) and set up the tripod in the best spot I could find, lest the sun disappear without me.

This was one of the resulting shots.

When we got back to our rental, we looked it up. We found we were searching in the wrong area, though we were close. However, due to the angle of the cliff at that time of year, we wouldn’t have seen much of a sunset, even if we were successful. So in the end, I probably got better shots where we ended up. Some things just work out that way.

But lesson learned: print trail descriptions, or at least have destination coordinates on-hand!

Most days, I am up and out of bed in the dark between 5-6am to hit a sunrise photography walk and this past 3-4 weeks, I have been at Mackenzies Point most mornings, as the sun breaks the horizon over the ocean, eagerly anticipating humpback whales breaching as they migrate north this season.

2 Fridays ago I switched it up, soaking up sunrise in North Bondi at Ben Buckler with my friend Michelle Louise AKA @ginger_skybird. After spotting a few humpback whales in the near distance and Alex the Seal heading into Bondi Bay for breakfast, I turned to Mish and said “5 more minutes, then let’s go grab coffee and breakfast in North Bondi.”

Next minute, this massive pod of around 50-100 dolphins exploded on the yellow-bronzed horizon, some stopping off at Ben Buckler to hit a large bait ball swimming off the point (a bait ball is a tightly-packed formation or school of fish), whilst the rest of the dolphins charged across to Bronte Beach and Waverley Cemetery. Magical!

And the magic didn’t stop there… as I arrived home and was settling down to edit all of the sunrise and wildlife imagery, this small flock of rarer yellow-tailed black cockatoos land on the roof opposite my balcony in Bondi Beach. Sometimes I have to pinch myself about this life that I’m living and the daily joy that Bondi Beach and its surrounds brings me. All of this before 11am!

My photography is bringing me a lot of contentment and peace right now. 18 months ago, I set myself 3 x new career goals, one of which was to host my 1st ever art exhibition and I made the decision to start selling my artistic works, which I hit mid-2019, when I was commissioned for Art On The Streets in Bondi Beach, with a panel of photography on the streets of Bondi and the exterior of local Asian-fusion restaurant, Mamasan Bondi decorated with my works also (yep, and thanks to Mamasan I became a street artist for the first time too – I never even imagined that in my wildest dreams).

As the pandemic hit full swing in Australia earlier this year, a lot of advertising industry clients hit the pause button and determined as ever to put a positive spin on things (while I’ve had my rough days and struggled for motivation at times like everyone else), I pivoted to invest my time into pitching new brand ideas, building the next phase of my career, increasing the frequency of my already regular exercise regime and focussing on mental health, which includes investing time into activities that bring me happiness and joy. Photography is a key part of that for me.

I have been honing my photographic skills further with 2-3 hour DSLR walks, experimenting with my Canon 100-400mm lens, capturing different, more varied subject matter and taken more time with my Lightroom photography edits.

As a result, in the past 2 months I have actually sold more prints than ever before; more than all of the previous months and years combined and I have been receiving unsolicited little DMs/WhatsApp messages/texts/Comments most days from friends, family and random strangers around the world, which gives me a lovely little starburst of energy each time, as while I shoot for me, I love that it can bring a little joy to the lives of those in the world around me! Thank you to all of you who’ve said hi!

And the momentum does not stop there. I am continuing the process of re-launching my website to make my prints more readily available for purchase online and as part of that, I am making myself accountable to myself, my friends and the people who are in my world, by setting myself the goal 3 weeks ago, of blogging on a weekly basis on hotndelicious.com for the rest of 2020, as purpose is everything and creating good habits provide me with impetus when it comes to the bigger picture.

I am my own hard taskmaster, I’m hungry and no-one is harder on me than me, yet little gems await in those sliding doors moments in time when I allow myself to flow with instinct, embrace the moment and provide my mind with some space to breathe.

This email is powered by the trouble between metalworkers, AI, scratched CDs and the cloud. Doing strategic design, I’m always navigating tensions around narratives of change, often ostensibly involving “technology” or some desired or feared “disruption”. What do such narratives mean? Is change always good? Is there anything interesting in the detritus left behind? I’m always drawn to ambivalence.

So it’s no surprise that in the wake of Easter, my thoughts hover above the border between death and rebirth, collapse and resurgence, obsolescence and renewal. And as Passover season led into May Day, I was reminded that in order to find new life, we sometimes need to do more than just hustle like good neoliberal subjects, and actually mess up the one around us, like the plagues visited upon Egypt, or industrial action.

I keep thinking of that awesome first-season finale of American Gods: wily old Odin tells Ostara, the ancient pagan goddess of Easter, that she’s sustained only by the meagre echo of Spring festivities that survive in our contemporary chocolate egg rituals. It’s time to demonstrate her true power to the New Gods, he says. So in the devastating penultimate scene, Ostara decides to withdraw Spring from the world, leaving the land withered and gnarled.

🔂🌏 The eternal return of post-human-centred design

Giles Lane from Proboscis took some time to wrestle with my recent ambivalence about human-centred design. Recapping: back in Issue #2 I asked, “Isn’t putting humans at the centre of things what got us into this climate disaster?”, to which Giles replied:

I have a very different understanding of Human Centred Design based on needs rather than desires, including the need to co-exist within a healthy environment/ecosystem. It draws on its 1970s roots, based in radical response to exploitation of people & communities by privileged elites.

Those of us whose work has always embraced a dialogue about ethics, values and been infused by a genuine concern for human centred, participatory design will always be on the periphery of the mainstream.

The thing is, Giles and I don’t have a very different understanding of human-centred design — I completely understand where he’s coming from. When onboarding new designers at Digital Eskimo, I was always at pains to emphasise how the heritage we were inspired by — the Scandinavian participatory design tradition, amongst others — was a truly radical seam of practice that had been papered over by the rather less exciting idea that “listening to customers is common sense for business.” 🤮

I would argue that contemporary design methods, whether they acknowledge it or not, owe a massive debt to organisations like the Norwegian Union of Iron and Metalworkers, who in the 1970s were disruptively intervening in debates about automation and computerisation. Rather than simply being “for” or “against” the machines that were threatening to replace them, workers became high-level designers of workplace technology systems. Now that debates about automation have again recurred in this age of AI, we would do well to pay attention to these traditions.

But I’d still argue that in spite of the traditions Giles and I both still cherish, the balloon of “human-centredness” has nonetheless semantically burst, and was never completely tenable in the first place. An analogy: “Third World nationalism” presided over some heroic moments in the struggle against colonial domination, but I nonetheless think that nationalism was never exactly a good thing in the first place, and also tends to yield ever-decreasing returns as a corrective to very real global inequalities.

I think we simply need new beacons for navigating our more-than-human design landscape. These landmarks might include the work of people like Anab Jain from Superflux (see this talk at the IxDA’s Interactions 18 for a good overview of her work), Anne Galloway from the More-Than-Human Lab and others. Let’s all watch that space, and please let me know if you find anything interesting — I’ll feature it here in a future issue.

🐕🤖 Old dogs, new

I was at the City of Sydney’s latest CityTalk, “Our Future With AI and Its Rise In China”: a keynote from Robert Hsiung, chief of the online tech education platform Udacity in China. I found the evening singularly unimpressive. Rather than indulge in wide-eyed liberal panic about Chinese authoritarianism by mining a seam of yellow peril rhetoric, the subsequent conversation went in the other direction entirely, studiously avoiding any discussion about machine learning’s use by the Chinese surveillance state.

Hsiung emphasised the importance of “mastering the machine” to staying relevant as humans in an AI world, citing case studies in which “even” blue collar Chinese workers with a mere secondary education were successfully retrained by Udacity as AI programmers. Sure, they want to democratise tech skills, and I agree that adaption is preferable to sticking one’s head in the sand, but when Hsiung characterises people on society’s periphery as “people who didn’t study enough in school” (actual words used), I’m not seeing Norwegian metalworkers taking power into their own hands. I can’t help but wonder there’s an implicit element of patronising, tut-tutting disciplinary action in this imperative to retrain before the Singularity overwhelms the uninitiated.

Hsiung’s keynote ultimately devolved into a stiff, extended advertisement for Udacity, reminding me of nothing so much as a dystopian propaganda spot for a corporation like Omni Consumer Products in Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop. If this deeply uninteresting event is the best the city’s public sphere can do on the AI front, Lord Mayor Clover Moore ought to be embarrassed.

When I realised not long ago that some of my primary school art students were habitually getting stuck in their creative endeavours, I got them to look for stimulus in unlikely places. “Look at what’s been thrown away at your feet,” I told the class. The next day, my own advice returned to me as a gift.

Local government rubbish cleanups are the rhythmic heavings of the suburbs. A few times a year, we find the unwanted and the outmoded disgorged onto the street (and more often than not, you can find me rummaging through the junk). As I got off the bus that afternoon, an object on the pavement suddenly came into focus as having joined the the ranks of the obsolete: a CD tower. A tall, narrow shelf, made solely to hold a large collection of compact discs.

A few years before, it had been cathode ray tube TVs and VHS tapes on the nature strip. Today, a piece of furniture had lost its one purpose. Next to it, victims of the streaming moment, were endless shiny platters: redundant CDs and DVDs. I felt a pang of melancholy at this diorama of churn, but couldn't muster up any actual nostalgia for CDs. I suspect that I’m not alone in this.

In 1998 I wrote a short science fiction story that touched on the possibility of being nostalgic for media formats that were then only just beginning to be challenged by new forms of media like the Internet. Mirroring what I was then seeing with the fetishisation of vinyl records, my 21st Century protagonist, Sebastian Tan, was a CD fetishist. While I gave Seb the ability to hack into streaming media services to get lasting access to the discrete music files themselves, this streaming pirate still preferred physical media.

And the act of opening the digipak and sliding the antique CD in place was a ritual. Trainspotting. When he first found Silver Rocket, it was a revelation. It was a place. He’d just stood there, soaking it in – the lost garage punk compilations, the late ’90s Skint family, the Anokha artists. All the music physically in the same room. Old silver platters and everything.

Since this was 20 years ago, I don’t remember how much I actually believed how likely “CD fetishism” would actually be in the 21st Century, but the idea certainly seems ridiculous to me now. Naked optical discs like the CD and the DVD seem to be missing the qualities that would guarantee their fetishisation. There’s something fragile, bare and unromantic about them. It strikes me that this is perfectly illustrated by two Kanye West album covers:

On the left is his 2013 masterpiece Yeezus, which unfortunately affects the style of a blank CD. To the right is its recent sequel, the not-so-great Yahndi, which makes up for its mediocrity by aping a magnificent Sony MiniDisc, a fabulous storage format that was largely outmoded by the turn of the millennium.

Don’t be fooled by the similarities, because these two things are chalk and cheese. MiniDiscs were cool. CDs are not. In addition to enclosing a rewritable magneto-optical disc inside a permanent case, giving them a more tactile quality, MiniDiscs were also smaller in the hand. And in the cinema of the mid- to late-’90s, they were a shorthand for “vaguely futuristic storage media”.

MiniDiscs played a significant role as storage for VR contraband in Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days (1995). Ralph Fiennes furtively stashes old VR recordings of happier times with Juliette Lewis in a shoebox of MiniDiscs, but one particular disc that comes into his possession becomes the MacGuffin in the film’s thriller plot.

Gotcha: VR proof of racist police brutality… captured on disc! (See how actually compact it is in the hand?) And in the Wachowski’s The Matrix (1999), MiniDiscs return as contraband, this time stashed heavy-handedly inside Neo’s copy of Jean Baudrillard’s Simulation and Simulacra. By this time they’d become almost retro-futuristic, somehow at home with the acoustic coupler modems and Bakelite handsets.

There’s something reassuringly tangible about the MiniDiscs in these movies. Their secret hiding places are enticing. And the sight of these contraband objects being exchanged for physical cash is just too delicious.

In short, I wish I could be nostalgic for CDs like I am for MiniDiscs (which, truth be told, I never used that much). It’s as if MiniDiscs occupy in my imagination a subjunctive road-not-taken that would have made disposable optical media less crass. I almost feel like mad old King Denethor in Lord of the Rings, wishing that it was his less favourite son who died in battle.

🧟‍♀️💾 Zombie content

There are folders on my laptop that owe their structure purely to having originated on random old floppy disks that I found in the cupboard. Some of these files are unreadable, despite being Microsoft Word documents. Microsoft are amongst the most slavish followers of backwards-compatibility in the technology industry, even to the extent that they replicate the behaviour of ancient bugs in newer versions of Windows in order for apps to run smoother, but it seems that documents created in versions that predate Word 98 are lost to me. (I’ve learned my lesson: these days, everything’s in plain text Markdown.)

I’m intrigued by the file titled “WHOREBOY.doc”. From what I recall, it contained notes for a graphic novel I was planning about an undead sex-worker-of-colour in the antebellum South. A black 19th Century superhero, Whoreboy kicked arse. At least, that’s what I remember.

Update: turns out that plain text editors can glean most of the content from old binary Word files. My memory proved largely correct. Whoreboy was a runaway slave rent-boy who could sprout tentacles from his back and rise from the dead. In moments of crisis, the old slaver’s brand on his shoulder would glow, perversely triggering latent superpowers. (I’d flagged the branding of African American slaves for further research. These days I’d be in Wikipedia rabbit-hole instead.)

A snippet:

Whoreboy’s mentor, an old “witchdoctor”, mentions Jimbo in the Mirror, the terrifying folk spirit that you can only see at midnight.

“Really?” asks Whoreboy.

“No, I made it up,” he says. “Them white folk love that shit. Brown Eye for the White Guy, I call it.”

Okay, perhaps it needs more work. But think of the possibilities!

🎼🔁 Refrain, with key change

It’s apparent that I often think inordinately about the past while navigating change, even if it involves a kind of “meta-nostalgia” (as above: when nostalgia doesn't seem possible, I feel “nostalgic” about “feeling nostalgic”). As I’ve said earlier,

I often look to the past when I think about the very idea of the future, not just so we can avoid repeating “the mistakes of history” (as important as that might be), but because as designers trying to make the world a better place, we really should honour the creative friction that happens when the weird fragments of the past we continue to live with rub against the potentials of the present moment. (For a future-oriented person, I do an amusing amount of hoarding! In my view, forgetting to deal with legacy systems, even if “dealing with them” involves actively destroying them, is tantamount to vapourware dreaming.)

But I’m also realising that to hover in the futurepast in the way I do means more than just coming to grips with the past, with all its traumas and potentials. I suspect that my own retrofuturistic tendencies are an instinctive way to express the bind we find ourselves in as makers of newness (designers, strategists, “change-makers”) under late capitalism: so much of our work these days seems to involve making organisations more adaptable, resilient, nimble and innovative, but how this might also be a friendly form of neoliberal shock therapy? How much is the agility of the contemporary design-led organisation a way to produce subjects who compliantly flex with the ever-shifting sands of the market?

I love to tell people about my work facilitating cultures of design possibility in organisations. After a productive co-design session, a client team-member will express joy about the concepts they’re helping to flesh out.

“You realise, don’t you,” I say, “that you’ve nominated yourself as a key part of the leadership for this project, right?”

The resulting look of terror on their face — the one that says, “B-BUT THAT’S NOT IN MY 12-MONTH WORK PLAN!” — is one that I always relished. And so I drag them kicking and screaming into the future. While I’m not about to defend calcified organisational cultures of bureaucratic planning, I’m now a bit more equivocal; I can see some continuity between my own gleefulness and the forces that are casualising workforces around the planet.

Perhaps my hovering, with my face turned to the past as I explore futurity (and like Lot’s wife as she looks back at Sodom even as she flees), is an admission that security and belonging are worth something in these times. So as we experience the churn of obsolescence and innovation, let’s keep our wits, sympathies and sense of revolt about us.

And so why has this storied quarry’s fortune thus far been one of hardship, glory and bankruptcy ?��Usually with one following the other in swift order !

Although first discovered in the spring of 1873 by geologist Sylvester Richardson, Colorado Yule marble, now the state rock, was named after the prospector who rediscovered it a full ten years later after nothing had transpired from the original discoverer’s efforts to capitalize upon his find. And that – his last name – was pretty much all he contributed to the story, as he then promptly disappeared back into the wild rugged and untamed wilderness that was almost the entire Rocky Mountain Range at the time.

Between the years 1885 to 95 many local miners acquired claims and attempted to retrieve sufficient commercial grade marble to offset their costs; but without contacts, transportation or anything amounting to marble quarrying skills – much different to those required by mineral ore extraction – the result of their efforts never left the valley; with much effort, time and money ultimately going to waste.

Yule marble was off to a rocky start to say the least, if you’ll forgive the pun, for unless someone with sufficient wealth should step up to the plate to build the necessary infrastructure and also provide some all important connections within the building industry, then the entire Colorado Yule Marble project, including the Lincoln Memorial, would simply never have happened.

Thankfully however, for all those who love The Yule, in 1892 the undoubted potential presented by Yule’s superb quality caught the attention of the 7th richest man in the country – none other than John Cleveland Osgood, widely known as “The Fuel King of the West”. Orphaned by age 14 he nevertheless shot like a meteor through the ranks of the fuel business, from what I can gather, by sheer force of personality and persistence. It is said of him that at one point he personally visited every commercial mine in the Rocky Mountains so as to ensure that he ONLY bought the very best operations: and buy he did.

Sadly, by 1904 the Fuel King of the West found himself having to go cap in hand to his old allies and business partners for a little friendly loan. When the money he had expected was flatly refused however – with their idea being to offer him a job working for them – he calmly stood up from the table and announced to his former companions before walking out the door: ‘Gentlemen, John Cleveland Osgood works for no man, goodbye.”

And with that he promptly walked away from a financial empire that he had single-mindedly assembled after being orphaned at the age of 14. Just how such a fortune could dwindle so rapidly is up for debate, but at this time Osgood was pouring vast amounts of money into expanding and equipping the Yule marble project – with a very hands on approach it must be said, to the point whereby in fact it rapidly became his pet project, much to the mirth of his former business companions I’m sure.

Hot on the heels of the glamorous Osgood Years came the fabulous Meek Era. Arriving upon the scene in 1905 with over three million dollars of investment Channing Franklin Meek immediately threw himself at the task of reorganizing and expanding the entire marble quarrying, milling and transportation operation.

Nothing short of spectacular in its ambition and scope, Meek’s successful ‘Integrated Operation’ for the first time brought the entire quarry operation under one chain of command – his own, of course.

Under Channing F. Meek’s personal stewardship the quarry, along with the town of Marble, Colorado, boomed like never before, or since as it happens, to the point that these years are now fondly viewed as something of a golden age by all those with a love for Yule marble.

Disaster strikes however in 1912 when all is thrown into disarray as Channing Meek is killed after being struck by, and/or leaping to avoid, a runaway something or another (accounts vary) – which sounds a bit odd to me. It seems ‘careless in the extreme’ I would say for these otherwise thorough and professional marble quarriers to be so sloppy as to let anything ‘runaway’ to the point that it leads directly to the needless death of their boss. By all accounts it took the poor man three days to die of the horrible wounds sustained by landing upon a giant pile of waste marble blocks. Events such as this are very rare in a marble quarry and for it happen to the man in charge, well it all seems quite implausible if I am honest, for nothing runs away in a quarry, there are far too many fail safes for that, and if it did happen then what is the chance of it happening to the main man?

For many people familiar with the long and at times anguished history of the Colorado Yule marble quarry it is a familiar refrain that Channing Meek’s awful death damned the fortunes of not only the commercial marble quarrying operation but that of the entire formerly bustling and ambitious little town of Marble, Colorado. Imagine what must have been going through their minds having lost their jobs, their livelihoods and careers, as the people watched on – if they were still around and had not already moved on – in 1942 as their magnificent marble mill, the largest of its modern type in the world at the time, was torn apart and ransacked for its steel just six months after America entered into World War Two. Such drastic scenes must have put paid to any remaining hope of a Colorado Yule marble revival.

Surely this fine facility could easily be converted to manufacturing almost anything made out of wood, steel or anything else required by the war effort, even as demand for marble had evaporated with the outbreak of war. But alas no thought was given to a post war scenario as the entire mill was summarily and systematically destroyed. Accounts of the usefulness of the plant’s metal to the war effort are to my knowledge unavailable, but what do you think would have served the cause better: destroying a massive and perfectly viable mill for its steel, or refit the state of the art marble plant to manufacture whatever was needed, say for the Army’s 10th Mountain Division located quite nearby? Also, if they had not trashed it the plant no doubt would have sprung back to life at the war’s end when demand for marble would bounce back? And what a magnificent facility this would have been for the G.I.s to return home to from the war. Such a colossal waste.

In destroying what was at the time the world’s largest and certainly best equipped marble mill of its type, all hope must have died in the hearts of those who loved Colorado Yule Marble and had poured their lives so willingly and enthusiastically into forging its success. Seemingly the dream was completely dead and surely the quarry would now remain closed and abandoned for evermore.

At the peak of its success from 1905 through 1914 the remote Colorado Rocky Mountain town of Marble could boast a peak population of 1,500 residents, a movie theater, three hotels, 9 stables, 5 ice houses, and an ice cream parlor. But by 1945, with the town suffering another catastrophic flood, just 4 years after the last one, the town’s population dipped to just one: Theresa Herman, the school teacher.

Quite frankly the progress that Colorado Marble Quarries, under their parent company Red Graniti of Massa, have made since acquiring the quarry in 2011 has been nothing short of astonishing, all the while maintaining the very highest standard of environmental stewardship for good measure.

But upon reflection I suppose it should come as no surprise that an outfit so steeped in centuries of marble quarrying experience would make short work of modernizing and reviving such a promising investment as Yule marble. Why else would these proud Italian quarrymen cross the world and leave their beloved homeland if it were not for their love of marble ? And if you think about it – ask yourself too – why would they make this scale of investment in a quarry perched so precariously in such a difficult, remote, rugged and fiercely protected terrain ? Especially one with such a tortured and seemingly ill-fated history – when they have plenty of top quality marble right in their own back yard ?

And So, Here I Present

Three Major Reasons Why Colorado Yule Marble Struggled to Thrive For Over One Hundred Years

All of which have now been addressed and no longer affect the current quarry operators, but we’ll get to that

Reason 1) The Quarry is Very Remote with all of the major markets for top quality marble such as Yule inconveniently located one or two thousand miles away and across a plethora of formidable landscapes. Anything headed east had to cross a slew of high mountain passes including of course the continental divide. And to the west vast deserts and mountain ranges proved just as arduous a challenge, perhaps even more. To the north and south there were few if any commercial markets for world class marble.

Plus, you have to take into account the rigors applied to heavy blocks of finished marble being transported on top of industrial rail cars as they are unceremoniously shunted in and out of the many sidings and stock yards along the way, not to mention the rhythmic clickety-clack of the track itself bouncing the stone around along the entire length of the journey.

Jostled and jolted between one train to the next long enough, hard enough and often enough and even the very best marble in the world can and sometimes did eventually succumb to such unavoidable abuse, given that railroads were the only realistic of moving marble in those days, with cracks showing up at points along the journey that were no doubt quite invisible at the outset.

Reason 2) The Quarry is Perched at 9,300 feet above the remote Rocky Mountain town of Marble, Colorado, thus endures powerful blizzards, rock and snow slides as routine events. But whatever the weather and conditions, each and every block had none-the-less to be winched up out of the quarry chamber, out and over the portal, and immediately lowered down a steep and treacherous cliff face. It was then loaded onto a hydro-electric powered tram rail car for the four mile ride down and along a steep track into the Town of Marble – traversing no less than 7 avalanche zones along the way – where it would take its place within the world’s largest marble finishing mill at the time.

Now, surely, the full picture of the early quarrymen’s incredibly arduous task, combined with the harsh reality of their at times brutal struggle with the combined forces of nature, serve as stunning testament to their remarkable achievements, even as the spectacularly ambitious Colorado Yule Marble Quarry project itself, as a commercial venture, never quite succeeded. In fact, the failure of Yule marble ultimately has nothing to do with a flaw in the quality of the stone, as I hear repeatedly mentioned in conversation – usually by those with little knowledge of the subject it must be said. For at this moment in time Colorado Yule marble is now widely accepted as being among the ‘finest marble ever quarried‘, which is quite the accolade for such an excruciatingly remote and inconvenient marble to quarry such as that of The Yule.

Reason 3) Italians Did Not Run the Quarry. Yes, it is a sad fact but true, and one we will have to live with now that we can at last see and appreciate for ourselves just what an expert, experienced and well financed Italian outfit can make of our old unprofitable Yule marble quarry.

For instance, aside from re-organizing the quarry itself to negate all of the up and over winching they were doing by running a tunnel straight into the quarry – as I saw for myself they did over in Carrara at around the same time, I think they would have drawn a few of the incredible challenges presented by a project on the Lincoln Memorial’s vast, unheard of scale.

They would know just what quarrying so many extraordinarily large blocks of marble would mean for all involved in the project. Not just any blocks however, but so many hundreds of PERFECT (for that’s what they had to be) quarry stones – both STRUCTURALLY AND AESTHETICALLY, as demanded by the monument’s unusually authentic load-bearing Greek Temple scale and design.

Above we see just one of the dozens of huge lintel stones, and in the drawing below you can see how they string from the center of one column to the next in a continuous row stretching all the way around the building. Extracting such colossal and perfect blocks proved very costly in terms of waste material being summarily tossed aside, instead of being allocated to another project as would be the case normally, in an all out attempt to meet the crucial Lincoln Memorial dedication ceremony deadline.

In addition the quarry had to find sufficient equally perfect blocks for the 38 columns, each comprising 11 drums plus a top piece, with each of the column drums requiring a 32 ton block from which to be carved. with each of the 418 drums requiring 18 multiple man hours to fashion.

In my opinion, I think that experienced Italian quarrymasters would have immediately pointed out such problems before they were encountered head on, as seems to have been the case. I think that serious efforts could have been made to cut the stone in such a way that the incredible waste ratio of something like 80 percent and more, would have been reduced to a minimum. But in any case, whatever their thoughts on the matter, and after seeing just what they have now accomplished in the 9 years that they have been in control up at the quarry, no doubt such knowledgeable and experienced quarrymen would have put their collective minds together and come up with something of a solution other than filling the entire cliff face with perfectly good but patently ‘too small’ chunks of excellent marble.

There is a reason why modern architecture – meaning anything since the days of Ancient Greece – avoid such monumental quarry blocks as demanded for the hundreds of huge column drums and lintels required by the Lincoln Memorial’s 2,000 year old Greek Temple design. Marble is very heavy, weighing in at around 170 lbs per cubic foot, which is the same as granite, but marble measures up at a fraction of its strength, leading to cracks possibly forming once the block is set in motion, and the more motion the more likely the cracks are to appear.

These days it is safe to say that the quarry is operating more efficiently, more productively and way more environmentally sound than any quarry in the world, for if there is an outfit anywhere with a cleaner record than our Colorado Yule marble quarry then I have yet to hear of it.

All of which means that now more than any point in its long and storied history Colorado Yule Marble is about to impact itself upon the American market like never before. The Yule is Cool Again, and best of all, more of a long term business opportunity now than any point in its long, proud but oft times tortured history.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, let’s round out this post and take another quick look at those pesky three reasons I mentioned earlier that have dogged the Colorado Yule Marble story from day one but thankfully each of which have now been nullified by the current quarry management

Reason 1) The Quarry is Very Remote. Well, not anymore it isn’t. That was then and this is now. Gone are the bumpy railcars and in their place are the smooth-as-silk, sprung, flatbed trucks. Not only that, but very soon Red Graniti’s Colorado Stone Quarries is to open a brand new state of the art fabrication plant over in nearby Delta. And so not only will the journey from quarry to market be inordinately smoother it will be incredibly shorter in distance. From their Delta plant finished counter tops, sawn blocks and dimension masonry, tiles and who knows what will reach every part of the country via the nearby national interstate system.

Reason 2) The Quarry is Perched at 9,300 feet. So what ? No problem, the Italians have taken care of it. Their solution was to punch through “the first new portal at the Yule marble quarry in over a hundred years“. In doing so they instantly negated the whole problem of winching each piece up over the huge ridge that had grown around the old portal and which had previously demanded so much extra work simply to extract the marble from the quarry. These days the marble is simply wheeled out of the quarry using some of the world’s largest and most powerful forklift trucks. For immediately upon taking control of the quarry the new owners ‘junked’ all existing equipment and replaced it with a fleet of new vehicles – the very best I might add, but then again, well of course !

Reason3) Italians Did Not Run the Quarry. Well they do now, and just like that – the quarry is transformed. They came, they saw and they conquered every conceivable obstacle, barrier and logistical conundrum they could lay their hands on and working tirelessly to finally set in motion the full potential of our beloved Colorado Yule Marble – our state rock after all – for the first time in it’s long, proud, storied history. Now watch as Yule marble products of all kinds begin to enter the market across the nation, with old and new marble products – some of which have yet to be conceived presenting opportunities galore for anyone with an interest in the exciting new Colorado Yule Marble Industry that is to come.

Lawmakers, Chief of General Staff to meet behind closed doors Feb. 18

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Standing Committees on Human Rights and Security of the Armenian National Assembly will hold a closed-door meeting with the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Artak Davtyan.

Lawmaker Ani Samsonyan from the Bright Armenia party said in a Facebook post that the meeting is slated for February 18.

13 soldiers have died in the Armenian and Nagorno Karabakh armies since the beginning of the year.

Armenian chef Karen Torosyan awarded a Michelin Star

Armenian chef of the Belgian Bozar restaurant has been awarded the fourth Michelin Star.

“When we love we don’t count,” he captioned a photo on Instagram.

Bozar Restaurant is located in the heart of Brussels in Belgium is the place where Karen Torosyan shares his vision on gastronomy with the world.

Chef Karen Torosyan is one of the most remarkable chefs in Belgium – if not Europe. Karen originally hails from Armenia and arrived in Belgium at the age of 18.

He finished his hospitality studies at INFOBO and gained experience in various types of restaurants such as Michelin starred Bruneau and Chalet de la Forêt.

It was at these restaurants that Karen discovered the real French cooking and the need of structure and hard work in the kitchen. At the famous La Paix restaurant of Chef David Martin, Karen also learnt the business aspects of running a restaurant.

It was under the wings of Chef David Martin that Karen got the opportunity to go his own way with the start of Bozar Brasserie. After a few years he became fully independent and quickly gained name and fame in the culinary world.

Michelin Guides are a series of guide books published by the French tyre company Michelin for more than a century. The term normally refers to the annually published Michelin Red Guide, the oldest European hotel and restaurant reference guide, which awards up to three Michelin stars for excellence to a select few establishments.

The acquisition or loss of a star can have dramatic effects on the success of a restaurant. Michelin also publishes a series of general guides to cities, regions, and countries, the Green Guides.

Armenia quake in focus of new study on PTSD early treatment benefits

PanARMENIAN.Net – In 1988, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck near the northern Armenian city of Spitak. The temblor destroyed cities and is estimated to have killed between 25,000 and 35,000 people, many of whom were schoolchildren.

The latest findings from a long-term, UCLA-led study reveal that children who survived the quake and received psychotherapy soon after have experienced health benefits into adulthood, Medical Xpress says.

The findings are particularly relevant today, said Dr. Armen Goenjian, the study’s lead author and a researcher at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, given the increased frequency and severity of climate-related catastrophes such as hurricanes and wildfires.

This ongoing project is one of the first long-term studies to follow survivors of a natural disaster who experienced post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, more than five years after the event. The research tracks PTSD and depression symptoms in people who received psychotherapy as children, as well as those who did not.

The latest findings, published in the journal Psychological Medicine, also identified factors that contributed to the risk for PTSD and depression among the Spitak quake survivors, including whether their homes were destroyed, the severity of adversity they faced after the earthquake and whether they had chronic medical illnesses after the quake. People who experienced strong social support were less likely to develop PTSD and depression.

The researchers evaluated 164 survivors who were 12 to 14 years old in 1990, about a year and a half year after the earthquake. Of that group, 94 lived in the city of Gyumri, which experienced substantial destruction and thousands of deaths. The other 70 lived in Spitak, where the damage was far more severe and there was a higher rate of death.

A few weeks after the initial assessment, mental health workers provided trauma- and grief-focused psychotherapy in some schools in Gyumri, but not in others because of a shortage of trained medical staff.

“We were comparing two devastated cities that had different levels of post-earthquake adversities,” Goenjian said. “People in Spitak, who experienced more destruction, earthquake-related deaths and injuries but experienced fewer post-earthquake adversities, had a better recovery from PTSD and depression than survivors in Gyumri.”

Researchers interviewed survivors five and 25 years after the earthquake. They found that people from Gyumri who received psychotherapy had significantly greater improvements in both their depression and PTSD symptoms. On the 80-point PTSD-Reaction Index, for example, PTSD scores for the Gyumri group that received psychotherapy dropped from an average of 44 a year and a half after the earthquake to 31 after 25 years.

PTSD scores for people from Gyumri who did not receive treatment declined as well, but not as much: from 43 at one-and-a-half years to 36 after 25 years.
