@ticklinglady : Are you sure you want Tachihara to stay in the mafia? Like, yeah, I'm asking this not because I personally care about the fact that these guys are organised criminals or anything like that ahdjgjgk. I'm asking this because of the fact that Mori made Tachihara's brother go through literal torture during the war to the point of the poor guy becoming so broken that he preferred suicide over the chance to eventually return to his beloved family. That guy was the only person out of Tachihara's shitty background to genuinely care and love him, so I personally don't think it's going to be fair for Tachihara to end up working for the man, who murdered him
(Hi there!) Sorry this took me a while to answer but, once again, life.
As for wanting Tachi to stay in the mafia...I don't thiiiiink I specified actively wanting him to stay in that organisation, but I might have really just forgotten my tag rambles or not.
But to answer your question, I don't really mind either.
I see it this way, for starters.
BSD seems to have an ongoing theme of....stagnation. There is character development and progression, of course there is, but at the same time, it sometimes seems like the characters aren't moving forward. I think Kyouka and Lucy (and Dazai and Odasaku and Yosano, to an extent) are the only ones who have "moved on," so to speak. That is to say, pulled themselves out of their emotional turmoil, resolved it, and physically acted upon their restitution. But for a lot of the characters, they still seem emotionally and/or physically "stuck" in the same place they were in the past (Atsushi still believing his only worth is in to save people, most of the mafia people (though you could claim Chuuya had more of a corruption arc than restoration arc), Dazai still suicidal and a bit untethered, Kunikida and his ideals, so forth). But again, they do develop (Atsushi finding his family, the mafia characters being revealed as more human, Dazai leaving the PM was pretty significant, Kunikida HAS softened, I believe).
Tachihara had a somewhat significant arc in learning to see past his, well, past and accepting his place in the mafia that led him to believe in the ADA. He took a step forward, and learning how involved Mori was in his brother's suffering could either reel him way back in to his indecision (because he HAD made a family with the Black Lizards) or push him into more character development as he contemplates his own morality against his "orders are absolute" mentality.
It could be that he, in the end, decides that the human aspect is worth giving up his conflicted feelings over Mori given how long ago it happened (he sort of did that with Yosano). Or it could be that he simply just leaves the mafia because he can't bear the thought of it. Like, yeah, I'd feel terrible if Tachi decides to stay right where he was introduced into, but it sure would make my mind rotate him like a rotisserie chicken so much more. And if he decided to leave, taking revenge or not, I am very very curious to see what road Asagiri will take for our boy

The black swan lake (AU) - Second act
*Mun Ari: I’m so happy many of you seemed to enjoyed this idea! :’D I’ve been having this idea stuck in my head for MONTHS! It was until now that I was able to write it down and I’m very much pleased (even after the first version incident!) since I wrote it from cero and I inserted more detailed writing for you to enjoy~! I hope this second part won’t disappoint you :’3 (also...a tiny warning since it’s a long chapter ^^’)
Anyway, enjoy~
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5
Tumblr media
From that day forward, the young princess went every day to visit the swan prince. At first, it was hard to coordinate their visits: Ariadna once went when it was early in the morning and found Kino still in his swan form and of course asleep. She accidently woke him up and she almost got bitten by the furious swan. She then understood that during the day Kino was a swan, which meant he couldn’t speak and he would be asleep, while during the late afternoon and night he would be on his human form and therefore they would be able to spend time together. Ariadna was in a tight situation, since that meant escaping from the castle during the afternoons and coming back at night. Ariadna was afraid this would cause her problems, but she was very careful during her sneakins.
Then it was the fact that the young princess had to find the way to get along with Kino. He enjoyed teasing her, insult her and would even treat her as some sort of servant (even making her refer to him as ‘your highness’). Ariadna would try to do as he asked, reassuring herself that she was doing it all for the sake of her family’s ring. Ariadna had a hard time and could only see him as a spoiled, arrogant and mean prince.
Days turned in weeks since they’ve made the deal and their process seemed slower than a turtle. Not even when their visits became a daily routine. They met, they talked and they parted ways until the next day. Barely any progress was made.
“Tell me ‘your highness’” one time Ariadna spoke to Kino with a sarcastic tone.
“I’ll let that remark of yours pass this time ‘peasant’” he said in a threatening tone
“I’m sorry~. But I was wondering, are you seriously a prince?”
“What do you mean by ‘seriously’?”
“I mean…you refer yourself as ‘prince’, so I was wondering from which kingdom you came from?”
“I don’t think that is of your inconvenience ‘peasant’”
“Could it be you’re actually the swan’s prince? You rule over all swans?”
“No I’m not!”
“Well, I can’t seem to understand how you are able to turn from human to swan that easy”
“You’re saying nonsense”
“Then...are you perhaps a wizard?”
“I’ve told you I can’t control this transformations”
“Could it be you made a spell that accidentally went wrong?”
Kino then turned around.
“It’s more like a curse than an accidental spell”
“Why? Did someone did this to you?”
Kino sighed and suddenly sit down in a fallen tree.
“I’m getting bored of this conversation” Kino said.
(Why does he avoids the topic? Maybe I guessed and he was cursed by someone else?) Ariadna thought
“Is that so? And what would ‘your highness’ would like to do about it?”
“I don’t know, you should do something”.
“Do something? What you mean?”
“Isn’t it obvious? Entertain me”
“How?”
“I don’t know do something!”
“I’m sorry to disappoint you your highness, but I’m I afraid I can’t think of anything”
“You’re seriously helpless”
Ariadna started thinking and a tiny idea popped in her head.
“Well, we could try and talk a little? Is there any topic you like?”
“Would you be able to tag along?”
“Maybe? Or maybe you can ask me any question you like?”
“Is that the best you’ve got?”
“I’m afraid it is…”
“Unbelievable…”
“Then, what is it that your highness enjoy doing?”
“I used to be rather busy, so I rarely had any free time. Unlike others” Kino remarked his last words, making Ariadna felt attacked.
“Please ‘your highness’ but that felt rather rude”
“Oh? You felt it like it? Are you criticizing my way of speak?”
“I-I just...please regulate your tone. I felt attacked”
(Why the sudden rudeness? Is it because of the swan topic?) Ariadna thought.
“You think you have the right to tell me how should I talk? Who you think you are? May I remind you the reason you’re here is to entertain me only? Your opinions are irrelevant to me!”
Ariadna gave one step backwards. He was getting irritated and she didn’t intended it.
“T-That wasn’t my intention a-at all!”
“It sounded like that. Remember I have something of yours ‘peasant’...be careful with what you say”
“B-But I did nothing wrong! I just ask for something rather simple! I thought we could get along…”
“Yes, yet the only thing you seem to be good at is at making me angry. I should have known instead of wasting my time with such an annoying girl as you are!”
Ariadna felt really intimidated and so scared. His eyes shone dangerously and Ariadna really didn’t understand what she had done to annoyed him so much.
“I’m sorry, b-but I’m doing the best I can. However, I can’t do it all on my own. I-I’ve been doing what you ask, b-but all I received were insults and rudeness!”
“So you’re saying is my fault? You are the one here that has something to lose and you are making me very irritated”
“B-But!”
“Which makes me think: Why is that ring that important?”
“It’s my family’s treasure. It has p-passed through generations, so I can’t lose it”.
“Your family…why they have such a valuable treasure?”
“What you mean? Each family has its treasure and no one really knows how they’ve got it”
“Even yours?”
“What you meant with that?” Ariadna suddenly felt offended, what he was insinuating?
“Such a treasure could only belong to a very wealthy family, is your family that rich or you are hiding the true origin of that ring?”
Suddenly, Ariadna started having enough and that fear that she had been feeling was turning into anger.
“Listen ‘your highness’: what you’re insinuating is very disrespectful on your behalf. I ask you to stop insisting”
“Where you got that ring then?”
“I already told you: is my family’s relic! Why won’t you believe me?”
“Sounds suspicions if you ask me…”
“Well, it isn’t! I’m highly offended: are you trying to insinuate I stole it from some sort of wealthy family?”
“Maybe? I can’t believe a peasant like you would have such jewel with you”
“That’s it! I ask you to take that back! My family is highly respected and we wouldn’t do such a thing! Unlike you that, in fact, who actually stole my ring with the help of your bird friend!”
“So are you calling me thief!?”
“Then, how would you call such an act? That is MY ring and you took it from me and later on you threw it to the lake!”
“Silence! Apologize this instant!”
“I will as soon you do that as well! You were the first one to offend me!”
“I won’t and unless you want that ring back you’ll do as I say!”
“No! It seems that I got to know you even more: you think is just natural for everybody to do as you say without complains, is it not?”
“Of course! I’m a prince and they all should obey me”
“You’re wrong! No one is above or below somebody! So, I won’t apologize since I didn't start this discussion!”
“So you won’t do it?”
“No! I’m out of here!”
“If you leave you’ll regret it!”
“It doesn’t matter anymore! I’m starting to think you won’t give me my ring anyway. Why should I bother to keep this constant visits?”
“We made a deal!”
“We did, but I didn’t agree to be treated so poorly! I’ve had enough!”
Kino stopped her by grabbing her by the arm.
“You! You really enjoy making me angry, don’t you?”
“Let go of my arm this instant!”
“Apologize!”
“I WON’t!” Ariadna felt the anger boiled inside of her and she knew that the worst to do was to decide when one was blind with anger.
“You’ll regret it! Once I’m pissed I won’t be responsible for what I’ll do” Kino’s spoke coldly.
Ariadna had reached her limits: up until now he had shown no remorse and a huge amount of cruelty that made Ariadna wonder of what he could be capable of doing. Yet after all he had said just now made her show that rebellious attitude she had been hiding for a while now.
“Listen ‘your highness’: I think I’ve stand enough of your offenses these pasts days. You need to be nicer! No one deserves such treatments. Please think about your attitude”
“Don’t tell me what to do. I won’t let go of your arm until you are on your knees begging for forgiveness! Do it now or confront the consequences!”
With firm determination, Ariadna looked straight into his eyes. She wouldn’t kneeled, not before a despicable prince as he was.
“Never! I won’t kneel before a monster like yourself!”
“What you said just now!?”
“As you heard: you are a monster and I—!?”
Ariadna was interrupted when Kino slapped her, Ariadna lost balance and fell to the ground into a puddle of mud. She stayed there in shock, feeling her cheek burning hot from the impact and soon the ache came.
“Pfff Hahahaha exactly~! This suits you perfectly! Looking at me from below and dirty as you are~!”
Ariadna felt humiliated and hurt. What is it that she did to deserve this? No one had ever raised a hand to her in her whole life. A tiny feeling of bravery raised upon her. She stood up and with all her force she could she slapped back straight to Kino’s cheek as he was distracted laughing at her.
There was a moment of silence and they both stood there paralyzed. Ariadna then felt all that pain and humiliation rose again and tears formed in her eyes.
“I can’t stand it anymore! I hate you!”
Without giving him the opportunity to add something, Ariadna turned around and ran towards the exit. She pushed through the branches and then she went out the waterfall. She rode Night Star back to her castle as fast as she could. Her horse knew the way and so Ariadna allowed her tears fall as she cried all the way back home.
“Why…Why is he… so mean to me? How is it… possible for such… such a cruel person like him to exist?” Ariadna said between tears as she was approaching her home.
She wouldn’t go back to that forest, she didn’t want to see that cruel prince ever again.
.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Back at the forest, Kino stood there frozen from the shock. He took his hand to his cheek, where the mark of Ariadna’s hand had landed seconds ago.
“How dare she!? Who she think she is!?”
A squawk was heard and suddenly Yuri was standing in front of Kino.
“Kino, what did you do!?”
“You see what she did! She deserved it!”
“Kino, the circumstances are different now! Look how much time has passed and still there’s no progress”
“It will be a matter of time. She needed to learn her place! I’m a prince and she needs to treat me as such!”
“But we need her!”
“She’ll come back~ after all I have her stupid ring”
“Kino you are wrong. After what happen there is no way she’ll come back”
“She will. She has to…”
“Please take this more seriously! Look at us! We are still under the spell of that witch!!”
“Watch your language peasant!” a voice was heard and the atmosphere changed.
From a black and threatening cloud a figure emerge showing a young lady dressed all in black. Although her face was hidden under the cloak she was wearing, it was possible to see her long yet blond hair. As she approached them, she looked at them through her dark grey eyes.
“Oh~? What brings us the honor, like every single day, of your presence Sabine?” Kino greet the lady in a sarcastic way.
“So charismatic Kino. It seems you have the same attitude as always~” Sabine answered amused. “How are you doing dear~?”
“I was doing fine until you arrived”
“Oh~? It didn’t seem like it~” Sabine said getting closer to Kino and passing her slim fingers over his red cheek. “It seems that even the most loyal servant can become aggressive towards it’s master under this...pitiful situation~”
Kino pushed her hand away disgusted.
“Don’t touch me Sabine”
“Why so cold Kino? You didn’t seem to mind my attentions not long ago~”
“Last time you laid your fingers on me, I ended up as a swan. You tell me”
“Oh~ silly me~! It seems my touch can be very picky~”
Sabine touched Kino’s cheek again regardless his words and in a second his cheek was healed thanks to her magic. Yet Kino didn’t thank her.
“What is it that you want this time Sabine?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I want an answer to my question~"
“You should give up. You know the answer already. You keep asking the same question each and everyday since you brought us here”
“And I’ll keep doing it until I get the answer I want dear~ After all, it will be a matter of time before your desperation within you became so unbearable with each passing day that you’ll end up accepting my proposal. Don’t you think~?”
“Then let me ask you: how would you feel being cursed and trapped in this hellish tiny place?”
“Don’t be like that~ It’s such a beautiful place! I made it specially for you~ Sure, is small, but you can leave whenever you like…as long you come back each time the sun hides to this lake for you to recover your human form that is~"
Kino looked at her with hatred.
“What? May I remind you who got you in this situation?” Sabine’s voice changed from a playful tune into a serious one.
“It was you Sabine after you couldn’t handle rejection” Kino answered coldly.
“Oh no no dear: I can handle rejection, but what I couldn’t allow is the humiliation you made me passed through!”
Sabine was furious and her powers were altering their surroundings, but none of the three moved.
“Let me tell you a story dear. The story about a prince, a young lady’s proposal and a terrible decision.
Long time ago, there was a prince that had it all. He had a mighty kingdom, that he built on his own. He was strong, skillful with every weapon, intelligent and a great strategist which helped him expand his kingdom and achieve so many things at a young age. The neighbor kingdoms feared him: some became his allies while others were forced to submit to him. He was also very good-looking and rich and so many ladies were after him. Many kings wanted their daughters to marry him due to his wealth and power. He could easily get any women he could wanted.
There was this peculiar lady that fell helplessly in love with the young prince and did everything she could to win his heart. She devoted herself to him and one day she declared her love for him. He laughed at her, she humiliated her infront the nobility and simply rejected her the worst possible way.
‘Love? I don’t know what that is~’ he said and kept on laughing. ‘I can’t believe you seriously thought someone like you could be worthy of someone like me~ don’t make me laugh!’
The lady was heartbroken and you know the saying: ‘there’s nothing more dangerous than a heartbroken woman’. She then revealed her secret: she possessed magic. So that same instant she decided to give the cruel prince a lesson.
She placed a spell on the prince: During the day the prince would turn into a black swan and when the last rays of sunlight disappear he’ll recover his human appearance.
She was merciful as she could have transformed him into something worse like a cockroach, but she chose an elegant creature such as the swan. Then, she placed the swan prince into a safe place with the company of his most loyal servant. Not before leaving the witch said:
‘As you said you didn’t know what love is, the way to break the spell is by finding a lady that would love you just the way you are right now. If the lady loves you just as much as you do, she’ll have to prove it by declaring her love for you infront of everybody. Then the spell will be gone and you’ll get back everything that is yours’.”
The end~”
Kino felt his blood boiling with anger after Sabine finished the story.
“There was another way to break the spell, however: the prince could marry the witch and live happily ever after. So, from that day forward, the witch would come and visit her beloved prince and ask the same question. And she won’t give up until she hears the answer she wants” Sabine added “So you know dear: you could end your suffering by just saying three simple words~ But don’t worry: I’ll keep waiting~"
Sabine vanished into the air while her laugh faded away.
“Merciful? Don’t make me laugh!” Kino said in an irritated voice.
“She cheated by trapping us here, by hiding and erasing all traces of memory of nearby kingdoms and allies about our existence and keeping people away from this forest by spreading false stories…”
“And! Avoiding me from escaping, because in order for me to recover my human form I need to be in the lake, otherwise I’ll remain a swan. Damn it!”
Kino punched a nearby tree while Yuri looked at him. There was a moment of silence.
“You understand now?” Yuri finally spoke “unless you marry lady Sabine, you need to fix everything with lady Ariadna in order to break the spell”
“What exactly you want me to do?” Kino answered derrotated.
“Make Miss Ariadna stay. Not by the means of her ring, but rather by you. There’s no other way: she has to love you”
Kino looked at Yuri and then let a tired sigh.
“It can’t be helped…but for that she has to come back”.
“I hope she does Kino…I hope she does”
.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Ariadna entered the castle as silent as she could. When she reached the main stairs, suddenly the room illuminated revealing a rather angry Akane.
“Ariadna” Akane stopped Ariadna’s almost successful plan to reach to her room unnoticed.
“Y-Yes sister?” she replied as calm as she could.
“What happened to you? You are all dirty!”
“Oh…T-This? I-I was riding Night Star and I wasn’t p-paying a lot of attention, s-so I got hit by a branch and lost balance and so I felt in a puddle of mud” Ariadna lied to Akane.
“That could be very dangerous Ariadna. Please be more careful”
“I w-will, I’m sorry”
“Now that we are talking about the subject: Lately you’ve been spending a lot of time outside, may I ask the reason for it?”
Ariadna knew she had to find a good excuse as to explain her constant trips to the forest. Something more convincing than a so-call-prince that could turn into a swan that stole her family ring AND was manipulating her with it to make her visit him EVERYDAY.
“I…um…”
(think Ariadna think!)
“I’ve been visiting Naomi!”
“Lady Naomi? Why if I may ask?”
“W-Why? W-Well…I asked her for some extra e-etiquette lessons! Yes that’s it!”
“So you’ve been going all the way to the eagle kingdom just for etiquette lessons you could easily receive here with Miss Sonia?”
(She doesn’t believe it!)
“Y-Yes…I know it’s not proper for a lady t-to do so, but Naomi is such a lady a-and a very good teacher. I thought she was a good option…I’m sorry”
(please believe it…)
Akane remain silent. Ariadna’s heart was raising with nervousness.
“To go to that extent…Ariadna, don’t push yourself too much, ok? You are a lady already, you don’t have to train that much”
“I-I think you never have enough…”
“If you insist…”
“Yes…A-Anyway, I’ll go to wash myself before going to bed. If you excuse me…”
Ariadna smiled and was about to head back to her room when:
“I’ll write a letter to lady Naomi to thank her then. I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea to invite her over as a sign of gratitude for everything that she has done”
“R-Really? B-But…!”
(Oh no! If she do that Naomi will tell her the truth and I’ll be in serious trouble!)
“But? I need to show gratitude in the name of our family”
“I mean, of course! H-However…with the upcoming ball you must be very busy, don’t you?”
“Well…yes, but still I must thank her”
“L-Leave it to me! I’ll tell her tomorrow when I see her in person! W-What you think?”
Akane paused to think about it and Ariadna was sweating at this point.
“If you insist…then I’ll leave it to you”
“Thank you sister! I’ll do it, trust me”.
Akane nodded and then left.
Ariadna was in serious trouble: now she needed to tell Naomi to cover her up, but knowing Naomi she wouldn’t accept doing such a thing without any explanation…and she also would ask the truth in exchange…
Ariadna cursed her bad luck: all because of Kino. She wouldn’t even come back and she had to cover it up anyway…it was all a disaster.
To be continued…
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5

That was Rhaegar's dagger? It is confirmed?I hope so because that battle was weird
Hello Anon, Thanks for the ask & sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been grappling with my disappointment with s8e3.
First of all, am a woman who isn’t misogynist and isn’t troubled by the fact that Arya Stark was the one to kill the Night King.
Her show avatar has proven herself to be very capable and I think the spar between her and Brienne in season 7 was meant to hint at it. Also, we’ve seen through various seasons in the show that every chance Arya got, she practiced her water-dancing moves. And then when she was in Bravos, she eventually learned stealth & moves that she exhibited during the fight. This book quote about her:
“Swift as a deer. Quiet as a shadow. Fear cuts deeper than swords. Quick as a snake. Calm as still water.”
isn’t unfounded and would perhaps be even more relevant to her character arc in the books. So yeah, she could well deliver the final blow to the Night King.
What troubled me the most are these questions:
1. What was the Night King about? Was he simply suicidal and wanted someone to just kill him? (I’m trying my best to not include sarcasm here but you can assume..)
2. What was Jon’s entire character arc about?
Is his destiny the Iron Throne? Yes, perhaps. But is that the most important thing about him? To gain political power & sit the Iron Throne? If so, the SHOW did a very bad job of proving him capable. They’ve shown him being a sad, unwilling person who is constantly thrust into positions of power and get killed or nearly get killed on various occasions. (I’ll stick to the show version due to REASONS)
3. Imagine what if Jon had remained dead?
- NO ONE WILL BE BOTHERED ABOUT THE ARMY OF THE DEAD.
- Daenerys will at some point return to Westeros and claim & win the Iron Throne.
- Winterfell will remain in the hands of Boltons’ and if by some miracle, the Starks win it back, they’ll bend the knee the moment they see 3 dragons and the six kingdoms marching on them. Cersei’s “no one can hold the North” was in light of the absence of dragons but Dany has 3 of them so… it’s just common sense really.
Sidenote: Dany, a monarch, is listening to snide remarks and taking so much bullshit only because of her respect(love) for Jon. She would not even be there if it weren’t for him. Also, normally, when the KING bends the knee, every twat with a tongue doesn’t get to go behind him and question the Queen whom the said King bent the knee to. I don’t know what the show is trying to convey.
- (Continuing from what if Jon wasn’t resurrected…) If Dany never went beyond the Wall, she won’t lose a dragon & it would have to be Bran’s crossing of the Wall that’ll be its downfall & not an undead dragon.
- Eventually, there would be a war and it might end up the same way. With Arya making the final kill right before everything is seemingly lost.
Also, I haven’t mentioned f(?)Aegon storyline here because even if he’s a Blackfyre, dragonseeds can ride a dragon & Dany might still find a 2nd dragon rider. Besides, I’m trying to think in the show-only-universe.
4. As for the dagger that killed the Night King, the showrunners explicitly stated that Arya hit him in the same place in his chest where the children embedded the dragonglass. First of all, how did she know where to stab him and why was there a gap in the armor (mind you, the Others’ armor has magic is not the regular steel thing, its Ice magic)? Did someone tell Arya where to hit him or was it coincidental?
Fluke of luck, I’d say!
6. Why did Theon have to die? Bran literally asked him to run to his certain death. Like… wtf?!!!
5. To top it all, D&D saying that they did it for shock value/unpredictability was a bit of a wtf moment for me. We’ve HAD 7 seasons and 2 episodes of unpredictability and now was the time for ANSWERS!!! If Bran had spoken SOMETHING instead of sitting and warging into ravens of the Raventree hill (dead tree reminded me of it lol), explained everyone’s role without giving away the ending perhaps but in a way that it would have made sense in the end, I’d be okay really. Something like, “Jon, you’re a watcher, you go watch! Arya, you be NO ONE.” I know, so lame but I didn’t get 2 years to write the scene!!!
For all these reasons and more (but that’s not the point of this ASK, I just realized), you have to forgive me for being critical of the WRITING for this episode.
Now, coming back to the actual ask - why I think the dagger was Rhaegar’s
We saw this image in s7:
Tumblr media
The text reads:
When Aegon the conqueror forged his Seven Kingdoms, he and his descendants would often decorate their blades with dragonglass feeling a kinship with the stone. The royal fashion for dragonglass ornamentation soon spread throughout the Seven Kingdoms to those wealthy enough to afford it. Hilts and pommels were and are the most common decoration for dragonglass if too brittle to make a useful crossguard. Indeed, its very brittleness is what relegate it to the great houses and the most successful merchants.
The dagger is Valyrian steel with a dragonbone hilt (black colored) and a ruby embedded in it. Needless to say, it belonged to the Targaryens. We know of only one recent Targaryen who was all about rubies – Rhaegar Targaryen.
“Rubies flew like drops of blood from the chest of a dying prince, and he sank to his knees in the water and with his last breath murmured a woman’s name.”
In season 7, when Littlefinger(LF) gave the dagger to Bran, he confirmed it’s the same catspaw dagger that was sent to kill Bran and so Bran should have it. And Bran passed it on to Arya.
This catspaw dagger, as you must surely remember, was taken by Catelyn to King’s Landing where LF vouched that he owned it at one point but he had lost it to Tyrion when Tyrion lost a bet against Jaime.
In books, there’s a very famous Tyrion quote (which leads me to believe in Tyrion-traitor theories)
“Whatever you may believe of me, Lady Stark, I promise you this – I never bet against my family.”
Long story short, Tyrion tried convincing Catelyn of his innocence but she wouldn’t listen and took him hostage.
There’s another Jaime chapter in books where he’s trying to discuss with Cersei who would’ve sent the assassin after Bran and then said that it “used to be” in Littlefinger’s possession but he actually lost it in a bet to Robert Baratheon.
Now before I share my views about how Robert got his hands on that dagger, we have to think how Littlefinger got his hands on that precious heirloom of the Targaryen dynasty. He just took it from the armory.
Robert didn’t really care for gold - where it came from or how it was spent as long as he had enough to support his “lifestyle” (drinking & whoring). And I believe Littlefinger has not only been stealing coins or diverting funds from the Crown, but he was stealing other tangibles assets as well.
“His last letter mentions the rebels only briefly before beseeching me to ship him some old tapestries of Robert’s.”- Cersei: (ADWD)
Here, LF had sent her a request for Robert’s “old” tapestries. OLD? Robert just died, like less than 3 years ago and Baratheons still ruled the Seven Kingdoms even if it’s just in name.
Petyr laughed. “Perhaps I shall. Or better still, to our sweet Cersei. Though I should not speak harshly of her, she is sending me some splendid tapestries. Isn’t that kind of her?”
In this context, I think “old” really meant Targaryen era tapestries that can be found lying neglected in some basement underneath the Red Keep. Which implies, most of their relics are up for taking only if one knew where to look. So, in my opinion, Littlefinger took the catspaw dagger from the royal armory at some point and gave it back to Robert in a public setting where everyone could see it exchange hands & conclude that Petyr was NOT the owner.
Finally, I think that Rhaegar Targaryen possessed the dagger on his person when he rode into the battle at the Trident. I believe it was a combat necessity to carry both- a dagger and a sword. Surely Rhaegar, the Dragon Prince would have carried his Valyrian Steel dagger with him.
Tumblr media
As for Robert, he took it from Rhaegar as a winner’s trophy when Rhaegar fell but due to his deep-rooted scorn for Targaryens, never really cared for it afterward.
I hope this makes sense because I’m not really the one for writing metas. I’ve tried to answer your question but I’m too impatient. Lol Lemme know if you have any follow-up questions.

Anyway I finally finally finished the TM post-mortem so have one last rundown
Really loved: Signet’s stupid relics runway show, Ali describing the Mirage/Splice resolution as “the most amazing Gift of the Magi fuckup,” and, oddly, Keith’s reflections on anarchism, though idk if enough of that made it legibly into the season---which is one of the ways Gig was underserved, I guess.
I also enjoyed and appreciated the discussion of TM’s utopianism as monumental artistic challenge. I obviously have criticisms wrt execution and I disagree with some of their analysis of TM’s failures and shortcomings, but I thought everyone was refreshingly honest about the sheer scale of the task, in a way that I often missed during the series proper---when the tone sometimes tended more toward “we’ve set ‘depicting a utopia’ as our goal, and of course we share a coherent (static) vision of what that entails, and know exactly how to get from here to there.”
I was dissatisfied at best with the conversation about redemption vs rehabilitation. I might be more convinced by the distinction if Austin had ever stopped saying “sin”... which, among other things, helps to selectively blur together abuse and other forms of violence. (I’ve given up on even dreaming of a world in which FATT covers its ass better in re: Christian-centric, frankly Catholic-centric readings of both morality and faith, and maybe it’s for the best that they lack the wherewithal to mask that.) That said, I think it’s very striking that Even Gardner’s violence and militarism seems dealt with in-story almost exclusively as a form of trauma and a thing that happens to Even Gardner, while Fourteen’s history with Castlerose is discussed (up to the time of the finale) almost exclusively in terms of Sins Fourteen Committed. I’m not saying those framings are ~flipped, but the ratio does seem off. Even has a fuckton of choices at every step of the way and experiences basically no material repercussions or visible change of heart, other than “once there are no Advent people left I’ll stop targeting Advent.” He’s also, notably, “brought back from the edge” by a played-straight romantic relationship, for some reason. Fourteen has like... half of a narrative about turning bad habits and even obsolete ideas to constructive ends, and half a narrative about reclaiming agency once safely away from your abuser, even at the cost of losing access to huge swathes of your life... but it’s an arc that goes so unacknowledged or unseen by the other characters that it never connects back up to the idea that, well, bound up in the problem of rehabilitation is the problem of forgiveness---or if we don’t like that language, then acceptance. It’s never clear on what terms Fourteen is judged and reintegrated into their community, and how and where their self-image aligns with others’ view of them.
Which is very, very lonely, and raises huge questions for me about the whole issue of Fourteen as ~disability representation and specifically as a test case for what terminal illness might look like in a utopia. It is just not clear what anyone’s goals were, as far as showing Fourteen supported in a systemic way and not just on the level of relationships. It’s very odd. I’m still puzzled by Jack and Austin’s remarks on this, especially the focus on what Jack had or hadn’t done with Fourteen in play. Literally every NPC (who has a stance on the issue at all) responds to Fourteen with undisguised horror at their memory dysfunction---the most sympathetic version of this is a lecture about integrating assistive technology into their daily routine! and the least sympathetic is the point-blank statement that Fourteen not remembering who they’ve killed is worse than killing those people in the first place. Like, what the hell? That’s a vision of morality that is entirely premised on repentance, and on the idea that expiation for a crime only comes with appropriate helpings of guilt. And it never really receives an in-universe challenge.
It was also weird to me that Grand didn’t come up at all in that part of the discussion. But then again it seemed like no one wanted to comment seriously on Grand’s arc in general; maybe Art was making really sad faces on the call or something. It’s a shame though, since you’d think it would be a good opportunity to go on some bullshit about “salvation NOT through good works,” or rather, salvation definitely through good works but everyone feels a little weird about it. Three bombs? Three bombs?
Finally, it is important that I dissect all remarks on shipping. I was a little perturbed by the discussion of Fourteen/Tender; I thought Ali’s IC reasons were perfectly valid but I found Jack’s slightly suspect, because I don’t think, uh, “this person flirts all the time but is too busy dying to pursue new romantic projects” really jives---either with Fourteen’s profound, active engagement with others (more active and deeper engagement the longer the season went on) or with Jack’s stated goal of presenting a dying person who, without being embroiled in regret or bitterness in the face of death, still loves their life. Obviously I don’t think romantic relationships are a requirement for that, but the blanket statement that Fourteen is Not That Person gave me trouble. Also, I just don’t think you can drop the “platonic relationship representation is so important” line in there without a LOT more unpacking of the pros and cons of that---who are the characters involved in that relationship, and are they people for whom nonsexual relationships are a top-of-the-line representation deficit? Also, is nonsexual vs sexual really the paradigm you want to cleave to here, in a discussion of the chemistry between an internet goddess and a hunk of data?
I’m a hypocrite though bc when they got to echogrand and went on about how it was important that Echo’s arc not center on romance I was like RIGHT ON
...
Okay. One more thing. Janine shooting down Signet/Blueberry; I was fond of this, though I obviously do not care about her opinion and will continue to do what I want---I don’t like “parental” as the trajectory for a dynamic whose foundational moment is the younger weaker party saving the older, that doesn’t do it for me. Of course children can save their parents, but they shouldn’t have to, and that certainly shouldn’t be the pattern that defines the relationship. And for Signet and Blueberry I think it really is; Signet offers Blueberry apologies, Blueberry offers Signet things Signet actually needs. That’s not parental. Nevertheless, I was fond bc it made me think about what a wealth of fun mentorship dynamics this season offered otherwise---with Tender and Morning’s Observation, and Fourteen and Sho, there are these really precious internal movements, or moments of slippage, from distrust to empathy and from faith to disillusionment, that I treasured as real, organic, slippery pieces of character writing and of writing about growth... My favorite example of this is when Morning’s Observation is FURIOUS with Tender after the fucking... rooftop debacle early on in the Wind’s Poem arc. And then again, more seriously, later, after he’s been essentially abandoned and has to save the day by drawing on parts of himself he wanted to give up. That feels like a moment of roleswap between “guardian” and “child” that is presented as appropriately bittersweet, pivotal, and rupturing, and which therefore preserves the logic of the original relationship even as it expands it. And I also love Grand’s awkward interference there, haha... esp in the context of Grand managing to disappoint Morning separately later on, when by that point it’s lost most of its oomph just because Morning has learned not to have expectations of these fucking geniuses. Which is its own mixed result.
(I wish there had been a bit more followup with Morning in the finale, actually, I don’t think he really got resolution on some stuff and I think “happy at the Brink with his moms” is more avoidant copout than anything, though not implausible or unreasonable avoidance from a character perspective. But like, the fucking... part in the Feast of Patina where it becomes increasingly apparent, throughout Morning’s glad monologue, that he did, in fact, do many of the same things as Grand? He betrayed former allies for an enemy faction in the name of convenience! That’s not all Grand did, but it’s not nothing. And everyone has to fall back on “but the Advent Group are fascists! Morning didn’t turn coat and join fascists!” when it’s like, well, would he have, if they had offered him spaghetti?
Not that I think Morning’s and Grand’s choices are remotely equivalent. But it was a very funny parallel for them to try to wriggle out of on the fly, and I wish they hadn’t---I wish they’d leaned into Morning’s lingering doubts, which would if anything have served to highlight that he does have good reason to stay. It’s just that those reasons don’t cancel out the doubts.)

Sporran Co-Despondents
Keith Cameron / NME 24.09.1994
After ten years on the road, The Jesus and Mary Chain find themselves in pretty much the same place they've been for years: on licensed premises sitting at a table filled with margaritas and naked dancers. But, reckon Jim and William Reid, the place may be the same but they've moved on. Keith Cameron drinks his fill. It is across the road from the Moulin Rouge. There appears to be an al fresco Ann Summers party in full swing just next door. And our chosen late-night Parisian refreshment stop rejoices under the name Lili La Tigresse. Yet the ultimate piece of circumstantial evidence confirming that this is not the place to come for a quiet lager top and quick game of dominoes hangs above the bar, in the form of a trapeze, a young woman of insufficient dress straddles it and begins to swing extravagantly. Her stilettoed feet come within inches of grazing the startled features of one Mr Jim Reid. Well "Hey! Hey! Hey!", as the man himself has been won't to utter on many an occasion over the past ten years. What more could you want from a Paris rendezvous avec le Jesus et Mary Chain? There are frozen margaritas on tap, dodgy-looking heavies in every corner and the naked chicks are said to "do" "it" "all night long". Pretty soon we'll hit the sidewalk take ourselves to the dirty part of town; you know the place, where all our troubles can't be found. Whaddya say, Jim? Jim?? Hey Jim, where ya goin'?! "Gotta get some kip. 'Night." Aw! Never mind, here's William. Yo William! Have a seat, have a drink, lets talk about the last time you were here and got chased out of town by the local vice squad in cahoots with a gang of machete-wielding LSD-crazed nuns. "Aye, I went to the Highlands for my summer holidays last year. Fuckin' rained every day. Hey, did you just see a girl with no clothes on dancing on the bar just now? Anyway where was I? Oh yeah, the ferry to Skye was a bit choppy, though..." The Jesus & Mary Chain are growing up so gracefully that their unrelenting progress is hard to believe. Some would say this is just as well. We are ten years since they stuck a pointy boot through the ear of a nation and screamed "Fuck" for 20 minutes before trashing the joint and still getting home in time to cop as much sulphate as they could before maw and paw came home from bingo. It's not pipe and slippers time yet but we can forgive them for at least beginning to consider acting their age. Even in a dodgy bar in Paris at two in the morning... This ten year-year tour of duty in rock's field of dreams has seen the brothers Reid resolutely ploughing the same furrow, against the odds and expectations of others, unearthing different ways to say much the same old things. "Fuck with me and I'll fuck with you / Isn't that what we're supposed to do / Kick me down and I will kick you too," sings Jim on 'Dirty Water', a new Jesus & Mary Chain song. "But you break me in two / And you throw me away / Knock me on my back / I'll send a heart attack," sang the same man on 'You Trip Me Up', a ten-year old Jesus & Mary Chain song. To the band's detractors, the fact that either lyric could conceivably fit in either song proves that the Mary Chain are a pair of con-men, desperately flogging their one trick pony 'til the poor beast can take no more. OK, so the early song was soused with feedback while its junior sibling bathes in a soothing acoustic balm – no matter, both are cut from the same starry-eyed cloth. Of course, claim the fully-paid up Chain-holders, this is the whole point. Rock'n'roll's corpse has been exhumed and defiled so often that nothing truly new of worth is ever likely to emerge. What makes The Jesus and Mary Chain so remarkable is that through persistently drawing upon the same chords, the same words, the same obsessions – they manage to continually reinvent themselves as a slightly but subtly different version of the old model, and still succeed in being unique. For, as much as they sound like other bands, no other band sounds quite like the Mary Chain. It really is ten years, then. Ten years of proving that the rule book need never be purchased, let alone read and its strictures followed. Compared with their contemporaries only the Mary Chain have enjoyed continuous chart success allied with critical acclaim. Primal Scream's star might have shone brighter at times but at others it's resembled a black hole. Ironically, in view of their early hell-raising activities, the Mary Chain have assumed the role of rebel rock's dependable elder statesmen. This month's new jacks come, last year's young things slip into oblivion, but Jim and William just keep on playin' their song. How much longer they are inclined to do so seems the not unreasonable topic for discussion this morning after the night before. Reeling from the dual impact of hangovers and a day-long interview schedule, both Jim, in his 33rd year, and 36-year-old William betray the haunted look of men for whom this business long ceased to be a respectable occupation. "It feels like it's getting hard to deal with as the years go on," considers William. " 'Cos I think the business side of it it getting less and less interesting. Making records, writing songs is just brilliant. It's brilliant to be able to do that and it's good to be good at it. But the rest of the stuff it's appeal is wearing thin. To be honest, for me it was only the first five months being in the group that was any real fun, and after that it seemed a chore." "I still like touring, though," adds Jim. "I still like seeing new places, still like to get around. I mean, I'd rather be sitting in Paris talking, than some shithole in London." The Mary Chain are in Paris not just to shoot the breeze with a chorus line of earnest local hacks. Last night they had performed live for only the second time with their latest out-of-studio line-up, following a bizarre liggers-only set at Soho's sleezemungous Madame Jo-Jo's the previous month. Joining guitarist Ben Lurie, who has been part of the set-up for five years now and is therefore eligible to sit in on interviews, are bassist Lincoln Fong (Moose) and former Curve drummer Steve Monti, who as well as hoping to make the Mary Chain his new regular seat of employment is also currently a Blockhead. "Great fun," he says of working with the venerable Mr Dury, Curve, he says, felt like playing with U2. And this lot? "Well it doesn't feel like U2, put it that way." The performance for French national radio's The Black Session – hosted by Bernard Lenoir, whose fierce enthusiasm and avuncular appearance result in him routinely being dubbed "the French John Peel" – was by the band's own admission "rusty" but proved them still capable of bristling the neck hairs when it counts. Moreover, in front of a rapt audience it served as a graphic demonstration that outside their own country at least the Mary Chain are still very much regarded as mythical rock'n'roll outlaws. At home, however, it's different. Or that's how the Reid brothers perceive matters, certainly. The generally cool critical reception meted out to the new 'Stoned and Dethroned' album seems to have confirmed their opinion of Britain as a fickle place that refuses to accord them their deserts but instead views them as a faintly comical cabaret act. "This record's been reviewed all over the world but it's been reviewed particularly fucking nastily in Britain," says William. "It's like it's the worst record in the world. I wish I could have somehow released the record without our name on it, as if it was by a new band, 'cos I'm sure it would have been seen differently. I'm sure it would. But no, it's The Jesus & Mary Chain and we've got a lot to live up to." "There seems to be no way we can win," sighs Jim. "You make a record with loud guitars and it's like (tuts)'Mary Chain, still got that feedback thing...'You make a record without feedback and it's, (tuts) 'Mary Chain, softening getting old..." Such are the problems of having made one of the landmark albums of the 1980s – people will always insist on remembering it. But aren't you proud of the fact that you carry this baggage around with you, that you made such an impact on the national pop psyche that people maintain these preconceptions? "I think I would be if it wasn't such a fuckin' albatross around our neck," says William. "We do get a lot of respect outside Britain. We're seen as an important band. But in Britain it's totally different, we're just a bunch of old fuckin' has-beens... Which is not true. Yeah, the baggage we should really be proud of, but when you read a review of your record you don't wanna hear about 'Psychocandy'. That was almost ten fuckin' years ago. We're different people and we cannae make that music. We've done it, we've done it as best we could and we moved on. And I think we've kept moving on." So how would you prove to someone that you weren't an old has-been? William: "I'd say listen to our new record. This record's pretty mellow, it's quiet. But it's no' because you get to a certain age and then all of a sudden realise, 'Oh, I don't know how to make noise'. It's just because we wanted to make this record. We recorded the (decidedly un-acoustic) 'Sound Of Speed EP' at the same fuckin' time." Jim: "I wouldn't even try. It's ludicrous. Anybody that thinks it can never really be convinced otherwise." If only bands were somehow incapable of reading their own reviews. Despite the fact that their records sell more than respectably, Jim and William's assessment of their esteem in Britain appears entirely based on what the press has said about them. This goes a long way to explaining why it's been over two-and-a-half years since they toured this country and why they have no plans to do so again for the foreseeable future (though they're off to the USA soon for six weeks). Which in turn might have something to do with why one of the bands that supported them on that last Rollercoaster tour – Blur – are a considerably hotter property than the Mary Chain at this present moment. As they are no doubt aware, making good records is not necessarily enough. But if that is the only aspect of being in a band that gives them any joy then why bother with the rest? "Unfortunately," says William, heaving a gargantuan sigh, "we are not in a grand economic situation. We're no' rich. Our records don't sell millions. So to maintain the sales we've got to do the interviews and photo sessions and 'travel the world'..." He spits the words out like someone has laced his mineral water with prune juice. "He says Paris is as good a place as any to be," nodding across at his brother. "I don't think so. I don't want to be in Paris right now. There's other places I'd like to be right now and people I'd like to be with. This is my work. And the reason I say I love songwriting is 'cos it never feels like a job. It's a pleasure. The rest of it's abstract. I wonder what would happen if we never did it, never spoke to people, never did photo sessions, TV interviews..." "I imagine," counsels Ben, "that people would think we're a bunch of snotty bastards." "But people already think we're a bunch of snotty bastards!" yells William. Couldn't you afford to give it a try? How well off are you? "We're no' poor. But if we stopped making records we could be poor. If we suddenly gave up we couldn'ae easily survive." "I had to fire my butler last week," Jim deadpans. "Caught him stealing the last hundred quid out of my safe." In many ways, Jim and William are ill-suited for life in this, the fifth decade of that multi-formatted, superannuated behemoth known as Rock (Inc). Despite their artful manipulation of video imagery they are deeply uncomfortable in front of any type of camera lens. Nor are they the most natural live performers in the world, which led to a notably traumatic experience on the second Lollapalooza tour in 1992. William: "It was the most soul-destroying experience I've ever had in the group." Jim: "Going on at four in the afternoon in broad daylight, it's not what the Mary Chain's about at all. And then there was all the backstage bullshit with everybody talking about guitars and having this wild great time...We shouldn't have been there. We thought it was gonna be more like a European festival on the road, and we get there and it's 4pm with a bunch of American kids sitting there waiting for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. You're playing your heart out and there's silence. Ten weeks' worth. It was hellish." "It's happening to Nick Cave this year," adds William. "He's stiffing badly. When we play live there's got to be a certain mystery to the show, because we're not the greatest showbiz performers, and the same with him. When you see Nick Cave you wanna see him in darkness with a bit of smoky atmosphere. Broad daylight in Oklahoma just isn'ae sexy! "Lollapalooza was an exercise in hypocrisy, the whole thing. The philosophy behind it was freaks, weirdos and outsiders get together and let's all be free. But backstage we kept to ourselves and instead of letting us be free about that people got fucked off with it. It was supposedly a celebration of freaks and weirdos but we weren't allowed to be freakish or weird." Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the Mary Chain turned down the offer to play the great celebration of freakish weirdosity and 13-dollar pizza that was Woodstock 2 ("it sounded tacky," sniffs William, "and it was!"). Can it really be that after ten years they still find the most fundamental aspects of being in a rock'n'roll group problematic? "I think we've settled down a bit," says Jim. "We don't fuck up as much as we used to, 'cos the whole situation was a lot more intimidating at the beginning. We just didn't think we were good enough. We believed in the songs but presenting the songs to an audience scared the shit out of us. So we used to get really shitfaced before we went onstage and there was always some incredible fuckup gonna happen. These days it's a lot more relaxed and it seems to be in front of people who want hear the music and accept it any way you give it to them." See? They've always wanted to be a regular band. Which perhaps hits the nerve as to why when some people listen to 'Stoned and Dethroned' and hear the groovy swing of Jim's duet with Hope Sandoval or the Drifteresque hand-jive of new single 'Come On' they maybe think, "This is nice but..." In conquering the demons that once led to their shows being so singularly chaotic, the Mary Chain succeeded in removing much of the excitement. "That might be true," ponders Jim, "but it's easy to be exciting onstage. You could walk onstage with a gun and shoot a dog. That's exciting, but so what? There's more to what we do than sheer in your face excitement, that's only one element, a small element, to what a band should be about. So OK, we don't walk onstage and fall over, you lose something if you don't do that. But I think what you gain from not doing that is more important. Excitement is easy, you just walk on with a road drill and destroy the stage. But anybody can do it. And if that's what you're into buy a road drill and a stage and do it yourself!" Every revolution eventually assumes the robes of the regime it succeeded. But maybe The Jesus And Mary Chain were never the revolutionaries some of us took them to be in the first place. And it might well be that they're getting tired of being misunderstood. "I'm sure there's gonna be an end to The Jesus & Mary Chain." Says William, "and sometimes it feels like it's right around the corner. Right after Lollapalooza I was thinking, 'I don't want to do this'. Same with him – you go through phases where you just want to stop it." "I think recently I've felt it could finish," nods Jim. "Whereas before we've just kinda talked about it. It seems more real now. I can actually imagine life without the Mary Chain. These days I could easily do it. Sometimes you just wonder, 'Is this worth it? I could do something else with my time." Such as? "I'd still like to make music but just not within this band. It's just the fact that we've been doing this for years and years and years and years. And you like to see there's some kind of progress in terms of people listening to your music, and sometimes we get really frustrated. You play the same clubs as you played in 1985...It's a thought." And one they seem reasonably preoccupied with at the moment. The previous evening, oblivious to the theatrics at Lili La Tigresse, William had expounded at length and with utter enthusiasm about the simple pleasures of music, of picking up a guitar and writing a song, purely for his own enjoyment. He'd said he writes maybe 40 or 50 a year, of which maybe eight are deemed worthy of recording ("ten, if you're lucky"). As the margaritas kicked in, your correspondent blithely predicted that they'd write ten more classics to shut the doubters up. Suddenly, William Reid's ebullience melted away. "We might. We might...Remember when you went from primary school to high school? They're just one summer apart but it's like moving from complete innocence to total cynicism and world-weariness. That's what the music business is like. We're hard. We started out and we thought we were soft as shite but we've been here for ten years now and we're hard. We've seen a lot and we've changed. Sometimes it's best not to know certain things."

One Problem At A Time Ch. 7
WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER
Remind me that the most fertile lands
Were built by the fires of volcanoes.
~Andrea Gibson, The Madness Vase
It was slow going, trudging along the rocky, boulder-strewn banks of the Strawberry River, made slower by the rickety, improvised travois that was hauling the sample cooler and a few spare weapons they had managed to salvage from the ruined trucks. Everything else had been absolutely destroyed by the thundering goat herd, and all of their phones carrying the hybrid repellant frequency had long since lost battery power. Morris Brown remembered some kind of a maintenance shack at the edge of Starvation Dam, he didn't think it would be manned anymore but there could be a radio. The dam was only a mile or so away but the terrain was so rough they were not making good time, it was hot and there was little vegetation and scant shade, but when the sun went down the heat would dissipate quickly and it would be best if they were inside if possible.
Tessa and Dariela trudged along together at the head of the line, scanning the rocks and hills ahead for danger. They were both drenched in sweat, and Tessa wiped her brow and said, "This humidity is nuts. We're in the desert."
"We're close to a river." Dariela replied, flicking the sweat from her own forehead, "that would explain some of the humidity, but it’s still really wet out here.”
Tessa panted a few more steps "So, how is Abe doing on the sterility cure?”
Dariela shrugged "He was close to a cure when left. Really close." Tessa hadn't hidden her eagerness for the answer. "You and Jackson going to…?”
Tessa grinned and glanced at Jackson, who was trailing the travois, protecting it from the rear. "I don't know, I mean l want to, I hope he does.”
“I'm going to have two more," Dariela said, looking dreamily up into the barren hills. "I want a girl, at least one." She stopped, pointing up at one of the rocky outcroppings. It was smeared black with soot and she observed, "Looks like there must have been some kind of fire here.”
“Maybe," Tessa gestured at the desolate terrain, "But it doesn’t seem like there's enough fuel around here for much of a fire."
They made it to the dam and any hope of finding help was dashed, Jackson could tell immediately it had not been maintained in some time. The operators had left the spillway open and water crashed ten stories down to the rocks below, forging heavy spray that thickly fogged the river bottom. Cracks zigzagged up the concrete walls and various bushes and grasses sprouted from every orifice where they could get a hold in the side The guard shack could be seen at the top, on the opposite side of the river, which meant they had to cross the derelict dam.
Jackson sighed and they started up the rock-studded cliffs to the top: he, Tessa, and Dariela in the lead, Brown and two of his men pulling the travois, and Brown's other two men guarding their back. They reached the top and started across the spine of the levee. It was narrow, only about ten feet wide, with a dizzying fall to the rocks on one side and a deep reservoir on the other, though as Jackson swept the reservoir he saw something slither through the water towards them. "Heads up!" he shouted, pointing to the wake the monster was leaving in the water, "Water snake! A huge one! Watch the side!”
They started across the dike, slowly, everyone on alert, guns raised. Their concentration was on the reservoir, watching the water for the snake but a loud, rhythmic thumping, like helicopter blades but slower, heavy and dark in the fog below the dam got their attention. Jackson stopped the team to tell them to turn back- if the ramshackle structure was about to collapse they didn't want to be in the middle of it but the whup-whup sound got louder and he could feel the very concrete vibrating beneath his feet and his bones vibrated in the core of his body and suddenly the dusky gray cement of the dam was shaded by a giant black shadow, an unearthly shriek rent the air around them and they all cowered as the shadow soared over them, flapping its leathery black and silver wings as it passed, creating a wind so fierce it nearly knocked Jackson down.
“Holy shite,” Brown said, his jaw dropping. "Is that a...dragon?”
It looked like a huge razorback that had been given wings, all glistening silver and black spikes and huge, slavering teeth and it's long, jagged tail swiped at the two men bringing up the rear as it passed, knocking them screaming from the dam, down to the rocky river below. "Run!" Jackson shouted, and they all sprinted for the other side, but Brown and his two remaining men lifted their rifles and started firing at the monster, Jackson ran back to grab the travois Brown's men had dropped as the dragon circled around, pulled up even with Brown and his men and let loose a stream of fire from his searing jaws that turned Brown and his men to ashes echoing with agonizing screams. Jackson fell to the ground behind them, feeling the scorching fire as it passed over him, trying to get as low as he could as the dragon circled again, then dove back toward the bottom of the dam, disappearing into the misty fog.
Jackson sprang to his feet and ran, catching Dariela and Tessa as they reached the guard shack, broke open the door and dove in, slamming it shut as they sat silent but for their ragged breathing. "Jesus," Jackson croaked, reaching over to Tessa to make sure she was okay. "Is everyone alright?"
Dariela sat up, panting with terror, leaning against a metal desk that took up the majority of the little room. "Brown and his men sure aren’t. That thing barbecued them."
Jackson rose slowly to his feet, favoring his injured wrist as he used the desk for leverage. "Let's see if we can find a radio. As much as I hate it, we need Jamie to come back for us.”
***
Abe was discreet enough to leave while they finished getting themselves together, and Jamie picked up the navigational tablet and changed their course back to the south, at least heading them in the direction of Jackson until she could find out exactly where he was.
"So, a dragon, and apparently not the Komodo type," Mitch said as he sat on the bed, jerking his shoes on testily. “Things just keep getting better and better."
He was still hot about the Abigail/Duncan remark and she dropped onto the end of the bed beside him and leaned against his solid warmth, trying to communicate with her body what she found so hard to put into words. Sometimes it amazed her that as someone who organized words into stories for a living, when it came time to use them in her personal life, her command of them usually deserted her at the most critical junctures. "I'm sorry,” she apologized softly, "about what I said. I'm going down to tell Abe yes, l will test the fertility cure for him," she raised her gaze to his and said fiercely, "because if there are going to be any little Mitch Morgan hybrids running around here, they are going to be mine.” The kiss this time was deeper, longer, intensely possessive, then she was gone, leaving his lips burning and his brain spinning; the bio-drive in his head had been a cakewalk compared to what Jamie was doing to him at the moment, springing babies and fertility on him with no warning and hurling unadulterated commitment at him with such careless abandon. He needed a drink but instead of heading for the bar he found his feet carrying him to the computer lab, where he knew he would find Jamie.
He walked in to Abe's deep, smooth voice, "Jackson couldn't give me much information, the battery in his radio was almost dead. They are on the Strawberry River in Utah, some place called Starvation Dam. Brown and his team was wiped out by the – I can’t believe am saying this - dragon. He has enough radio power left for me to contact him and let him know where to meet us.”
Jamie went to her bank of computers and Mitch joined her, resting his hand lightly on her shoulder in a gesture of forgiveness as she pulled up real-time detailed satellite pictures of the Starvation Dam area and started scanning through them rapidly, searching for a place that would make a suitable landing spot for the plane. "What about the IADG?” she asked, "Do they have a team closer that can extract him? We're still at least two or three hours away.”
"No." Abe said in a tone that made them both look up from the satellite pictures. "The IADG evacuated east of the wall, and they are trying to help people flee. The hybrids are spreading, even though it hasn't even been 48 hours. Look," he tapped on one of the computers and a news broadcast came on, a somber newscaster recounting the horrible things happening in Boulder as people's pets and farm animals were being killed by some creature or creatures, then coming back as a monster and attacking anyone they came in contact with, even their owners. The accompanying video was littered with the bloodied bodies of humans and animals alike.
Mitch shook his head in frustration at the news but without the samples there wasn't much he could do about it, and at the moment another question was on the front burner. "We need to get the hybrid repellant frequency information to IADG. It could be useful to them, Abe, can you help me with that?" Mitch jerked his head at the lab and motioned for Abe to follow him. Once they were safely out of Jamie's hearing, Mitch said in a near-whisper, “Um, so Jamie brought up an interesting point a little while ago and I would like to get your opinion on it. Doctor/patient like opinion," he clarified.
They trotted down the stairway to the lab, and Abe's curiosity got the better of him. "I would love to give you my opinion. Doctor patient opinion, of course.”
Mitch stopped on the bottom step. "Jamie seems to think that because I had to be put in the stasis tank well before the twelve hour period it took for the TX-14 gas to spread, and was likely not taken out until the gas had diffused into the atmosphere enough for it to be ineffective on me, l may not be sterile. May not have ever been sterile." He shuddered at the idea of what Abigail could have used him for but pushed the thought away.
Abe nodded his head as Mitch spoke, smiling as the implications and possibilities hit him. "Yes, she is correct, I don't know why I didn't think of it myself. Would you like me to test you?"
“Well, yeah," Mitch whispered snidely, rolling up his sleeve. “Especially since Jamie has agreed to be your little practice egg factory. I kinda want to know what l'm getting into.”
Abe chuckled as he opened a nearby drawer and took out a needle and a glass vial. "I gave her the first treatment a few minutes before you joined us. I wondered if she was going to tell you about it.”
“Well, she did," Abe quickly swabbed Mitch's arm with alcohol, slid the needle in and then removed the vial with a swift movement as Mitch rolled his sleeve back down.
“It seems you two are closer than ever,” he smiled heartily at Mitch, "I am glad to see it. I was afraid that her recent poor decision making would be the end of you two, but it appears to have brought you together." Abe carried the sample to one of the workstations, opened a cabinet and took out a bottle of clear liquid, siphoning out a couple of cc's of the fluid and dropping it into a glass tube. He then used a syringe to withdraw a few drops of Mitch's blood from the vial and added it to the solution, placing a gloved finger over the opening and shaking it gently, "But then what does not kill you only makes you stronger.”
Mitch rolled his eyes. "Thanks for the words of wisdom, Obi Wan. I should look like the Hulk by now.” He jerked his head at the tube in Abe’s hand. “How long is this going to take?" Abe just smiled as he stopped shaking the mixture and held the glass tube up to the light.
The liquid had turned a bright blue and the delight on Abe’s face was the only answer Mitch needed. “Oh-kay. Well, that was faster than l expected." He took a deep breath and cut his eyes at Abe, just to be sure. “I’m not sterile?”
“No, my friend, you are not," Abe chuckled, patting Mitch on the back. "Congratulations!”
“Yeah,” Mitch replied tersely, handing Abe a small drive from his pocket; he suddenly needed a drink. "The hybrid repellant frequency information is on this drive, get it to the IADG, I’m going to go see if Jamie has come up with anything." He ducked out of the lab, clattering up the stairs to the bar where he poured himself a shot, downed it in one swallow, then marched down the hallway to what had been his room, knocking softly on the door until Clem opened it. She was holding Baby Sam to her breast while he nursed, and Mitch recoiled as she pulled the door open, turning away and covering his eyes. "Come on, Clem," he said, "I know it's just a biological function but you're my daughter and I am barely used to you having a baby much less…lady…parts…” he finished lamely as his daughter rolled her eyes and turned her back on him, motioning for him to come into the room. Sam was sleeping in Mitch's bed and he looked much better, though Mitch was fairly sure it was the nurse more than the nursing that was helping him heal.
"What's up, Dad?" Clem asked, laying baby Sam over her shoulder and covering herself up. She patted his back gently until he let out a loud, drooling belch, then she gently wiped his mouth and handed him to his grandfather. Mitch handled the bundle awkwardly for a second, then got Sam comfortably tucked into his arms and he cooed and smiled over the baby, marveling at the little creature that was his grandson. "So, we have turned around and we are headed to Utah to rescue Jackson, Tessa, and Dariela. Apparently they were attacked by a – bear with me here - dragon, and need a ride.”
"A dragon? Like a fire-breathing giant lizard?” Clem asked in surprise, then grinned as she said softly, "Grandpa would have loved that. A truly mythical monster." She caught Mitch’s expression and added, "But that's not why you're here, is it?"
“Uh, no, it isn't." He kissed his grandson on the forehead and muttered, "I need to talk to you. About Jamie. A...situation has come up and you are probably the only person who can tell me what I need to know."
Clementine folded her arms across her chest and stared at her father "Well, am intrigued. What kind of situation?"
Mitch lifted the baby in his arms a fraction and said, "This kind." He wrinkled his nose as a particularly noxious smell reached him and he handed Sam back to his mother and said, "Your department, Mom." Clem took her baby and took a whiff too, turning her face away with a grimace. "Anyway, Jamie brought up an interesting point earlier, that because of my time in the stasis tank I may not have been sterilized with the rest of the world, so l had Abe test me. Turns out Jamie was right, I am a fully functional baby-maker, and in a really fun twist, Jamie has agreed to be Dr. Kenyatta's sterility cure lab rat and has already taken the first treatment-“
Clem interjected, "Does Jamie know? About you?"
"Well, not definitively. yet. She suspected it, it was her suggestion-“
"Tell her now." Clem was immediately serious. "This isn't the kind of thing you keep from someone.”
“I know, Clem, but that is kind of the reason I'm here." He felt his face flush hot with embarrassment, and glad that Clem wasn’t looking at him, plowed ahead. "I haven't asked you much about.. what it was like, for you, growing up, but l need to know... what was she like? As a mom, when you lived with her." It was still painful, knowing how much he had missed of her life, and between lack of time to talk and the unpleasantness of the beer revelation he hadn't asked her much about her past, with Jamie or with Max.
Clem smiled as she lay Sam out on the bed, swiftly removing his soiled diaper. “She was amazing. We struggled at first, I mean we were both very sad and very angry and she blamed herself for...well, for a lot of things. But she tried to make it as normal as she could, made sure l went to school, and ate healthy food, and did my homework, and we went to the movies, and museums-“ she stopped at the look of wistful sadness on Mitch's face. "And she made sure I knew you, who you were, what you did, everything about you. She talked about you all the time and she would just glow, thinking about you made her light up, even in front of Logan," Mitch smiled at that, and his heart twisted around Jamie's a little more. "I know she's different from who you remember, but she's still Jamie." She paused as she deftly re-swaddled the baby and cuddled him close as he closed his eyes in contentment.
"We’ve only been together for a couple of weeks...it's a little sudden-“
Clem scoffed at his reasoning. "You and Jamie have been together for eleven years, Dad, you just spent some of it apart."
“Some of it? That's a bit of a stretch," he snorted in turn, then added, "but I get your meaning." He sighed irritably and rolled his head to the side, squinting at Clementine. "She told me today that she wanted to make little Mitch Morgan hybrids.”
Clementine burst out laughing. "I know you aren't the best at reading women, but that's pretty straightforward." She smiled and held up her son, freshly changed, sleeping soundly in her arms. "Just think about it. A kid that's half you, half Jamie? That's going to be one brilliant know-it-all little badass.”
***
She was still flicking through satellite photos when he came back to the computer lab/kitchen, carrying a bottle of vodka and two glasses. He poured her a drink and handed it to her as he snarked, "If you get pregnant you cant drink for at least nine months.”
She didnt raise her eyes from the screen but took the glass and swallowed a long, deep draught before replying, "Well, that’s a deal breaker, then."
"Good to know, Ill make sure I keep the bar stocked." He pulled up a chair and sat down next to her, looking over her shoulder at the barren desert in the satellite photos. "Because it turns out you were right." He took another swallow of his drink.
"I know I am,” she replied cheekily, "Can you be more specific?"
"Very funny," he retorted. "You know what mean."
Jamie leaned back in her chair, her usually warm brown eyes afire as she turned to him. "And how do you feel about that?"
"Confused. Stunned." He paused, and took another swallow of his drink, meeting Jamie's eyes over the rim of the glass as she quirked an eyebrow at him. "Excited.” He broke the gaze. “Scared.”
Jamie was quiet for a few seconds, then she leaned forward in her chair and took the bottle from Mitch, pouring herself another drink. “l never thought would want to be a mother. When my friends were all pushing baby dolls in carriages and playing with Barbies, I was playing reporter and asking my uncle about dairy prices and hog futures." She chuckled a little to herself at the memory, then raised her gaze to meet Mitch's. "Then my mother died and you know how it went from there. Children were never a priority, they were an afterthought, something l would consider after l brought Reiden down, after l avenged my mother, and my hometown, and everyone else they had destroyed-“ she reined herself in, swallowing the words at the tip of her tongue and a paused a second to collect herself before she continued, "And then you came along, with your lions acting lion-y, and your genius theories, and love for your daughter," she laughed with a rueful shake of her fiery hair, “and your inexplicable faith in me despite my obvious shortcomings, and for the first time l allowed myself to think about a family with you, and with Clementine, and who knows? Maybe that's what we would have done in Maine but," she looked away from him, "fate had other plans, didn't it?”
“I wanted you to be Clementine's family," Mitch said gruffly.
“It's not the same and you know it," Jamie replied sharply. "But even if you hadn’t…died, we would have been sterilized, so I came to terms with it, just like the rest of humanity. Even when you came back to me, I didn't let myself dream of family again, I was too far down the rabbit hole.” She stopped, her gift of words deserting her again so she set her drink down and took his hands. "Then I held your grandson, Mitch, and l looked into those beautiful little eyes, held that tiny little hand in mine and something in me changed. My...priorities changed.”
Abe's deep baritone interrupted their silence. "I just finished up with the IADG, they are very appreciative for the information and they are going to implement the repellant frequency as widely and as quickly as they can," he poked his head in before entering, making sure he wasn't interrupting anything. "Have you had any luck finding a rendezvous point for Jackson?”
“Ye- yes," Jamie said, taking her hands away from Mitch's and turning back to the computers as Mitch cleared his throat and picked up the vodka bottle and glasses, and Jamie tapped at the screen. "An abandoned highway, about a mile and a half north of the dam. Looks like they built a newer road and didn't tear up the old one. Long enough to land the plane and take off again.”
Abe bent over the screen to take a look and nodded. "Yes, that will do well. Let me get the coordinates and I will radio Jackson immediately. How long before we get there?”
Jamie tapped the screen thoughtfully, doing some mental calculations and said, "About two hours. Give or take." She jotted down the coordinates and handed them to Abe, who pulled a radio from his rear pocket and pressed the call button. Jackson's voice crackled over the speaker. "Give me good news, Abe.”
Abe relayed the coordinates to the makeshift runway to Jackson, who said, "Okay. Be careful, the dragon is still here, flying around. It knows we're still here, it's waiting for us to make a move but the sun is going to set soon, we’ll head out then, maybe it won't chase us in the dark." The radio started to cut out and it crackled as he said, "There's also a giant water snake in the upper portion of the river.”
Mitch interjected, "Tell him to get blood samples if he can!”
Jackson retorted, "Tell Mitch to go fuck himself. He can get his own samples if he wants them."
Abe and Jamie laughed, but the gears started turning in Mitch’s head. "Copy that," he answered, and let Abe finish the radio call before asking, "I have an idea. I think we can get some dragon blood. Do you still have the sample collecting crossbow you got on Pangaea?”

right, so, old meta from old blog, but honestly i can’t see myself writing this any better than i did back then, so?
While it’s not a headcanon that I can apply into my writing, it deals heavily with Ace’s character, namely with the actual weight of one of his character traits——one that much of the fandom and fanon interpretations really reduce to just a quirk, when actually it’s hinting at something more symbolic. And yeah, that’s the fact that he likes chocobos.
Because there is a reason, one with plenty of literary merit that gets overlooked in its english adaptation, that this detail is included and is so heavily connected to Ace’s character in particular. It is not merely chance nor coincidence that it’s a central aspect of Izana’s relationship with Ace——it is, in fact, critical to the point that Ace’s friendship with him attempts to draw out into the open.
Now, in the world of Orience, chocobos are not seen with the same characteristic fondness that we’re used to them having in many other Final Fantasy titles. It’s not like they’re hated across the board——many NPC’s, ergo civilians, in various towns remark on how cute chocobos are or how they make nice pets, but within the Peristylium, the attitude taken toward them is very, very different. They are, first and foremost, equipment for the military, a means for transportation, devoid of feelings or thoughts. They are seen as replaceable objects, and that same ideology is an expectation and standard held by all the people who work within the Peristylium itself, perhaps with an exception of the chocobokeeps. During Izana’s initial meeting with Ace in the light novel, the cadet remarks that he’s, “the exception. [He’s] often told ‘It’s unreasonable to shower the army’s equipment with affection’.” Prior to this, Izana states that soldiers rarely visit the stables for this reason, especially simply for reasons to pet or feed their trusted partners——people like themselves are a minority, faced with plenty of scrutiny from their peers. Why this matters, when the classes at this point are treated as separate entities from the military is also elaborated on:
“In other words, the cadets were not ordinary students, but existed alongside the military personnel and civil officials. The classes were one organization that always mobilized together, so the relationships between comrades in the classes were extremely close. If he denied those classmates’ opinions, then his standing among them would also decline.”
Which is something we see in the game, but is also a huge concept that we see in Japanese society as a whole outside the game. There’s a really excellent post on the matter using the framework of Persona 4 to explain how it exists in reality (see here.), but for the aspect of time, I’ll hit the highlights. Essentially, in Japan, like in Rubrum, people are taught to view themselves as part of a machine, so to speak. Each individual is a cog in the machine, and therefore unless everybody works together, the machine itself will fail or jam——as such, it is looked down upon to be different from other people in a way that inconveniences the people around you. The individualistic sort of traits that Westerners tend to pride themselves on are more openly found in certain hobbies for them, including gaming, where it becomes an escape to be more unique. Otherwise, it’s best to behave accordingly and not do anything that might bother anybody else. Now, take that framework and apply it to the individual classes within the Peristylium Suzaku, and it draws a near-perfect parallel regarding behavior: those who score lowly, don’t commit themselves to extracurricular activities or clubs, or are generally negative are not popular and are, henceforth, bullied.
So, what does this have to do with Ace’s love of chocobos? Well, give me a second to really explain where Class Zero actually stands in regards to the other classes.
We’re led under false pretenses to believe that Class Zero is beloved by the entirety of the Peristylium for around half the game, excluding many members of Parliament, if we simply proceed with the story and don’t actually talk to the other cadets. However, at the game’s beginning, Class Zero is new and because of their status and adoptive mother being the head of the Sorcery Department, are cast as the most important and powerful class, knocking Class First down a peg (a fact that their moogle is never happy about and constantly challenges you on) seemingly overnight. Now, this doesn’t have an effect until later on in the plot, when Class Zero is branded as traitors and more and more cadets are asking if they’re really all that and so strong, but that’s because in those initial battles, after Class Zero saved the Peristylium, they had no reason to complain. Class Zero was contributing in a beneficial way to the whole of the country and the war effort——it isn’t until they start becoming an “inconvenience” that the hatred and bullying towards them becomes a problem.
And we even witness just how fickle the Peristylium cadets are about it, given in the final chapter when Class Zero returns after defeating Qator in Ingram and everything has gone to shit because of Finis, these other kids are outright screaming the blame at Class Zero from the moment they arrive——blaming them wholly for the end of the world despite the fact they never did anything other than what they were told. These cadets are bullies, unable to do much other than speak slanderous remarks in the face of Class Zero’s proven strength. And what’s worse, they don’t even care if Class Zero actually dies like they’re telling them to do, because they believe they won’t remember them anyway thanks to the Crystal’s Blessing. At that point, it’s more desirable for Class Zero to die and make everything better with their absence from these cadets’ perspective.
In essence, Class Zero is only the top class in name alone. As far as the majority of the cadets believe, these new kids are deplorables if they don’t properly contribute and make everybody’s lives easier, and they only got their high ranking status because of Arecia Al-Rashia handing it to them on a silver platter, which makes it that much more annoying to them. And as we know incredibly well from the incidents at both Ingram and Big Bridge, to boot, Parliament has no issue with using Class Zero as pawns for their own gain, keeping them only as long as they’re useful and ready to leave them for dead the second they get the chance.
Starting to sound familiar? It should——because it’s the same way the Peristylium staff and cadets treat the chocobos: like tools to be disposed of and replaced with no concern for their emotional or psychological states. And within Class Zero stands a greater example of all the societal constraints we see above in Ace himself. He behaves differently to receive the approval of his classmates and streamline their tasks as a class, and also on the larger scale in order to properly fit in among his fellow cadets——even though he doesn’t actually agree with their views or actions. He does still challenge the established norm, as Cater remarks that a “red-mantled cadet was seen at the chocobo stables” in annoyance, claiming that they were, essentially, sullying Class Zero’s name by doing so, and though she doesn’t realize it herself, there’s little belief that the cadet is anybody other than Ace to the player. But, regardless of his attempts to escape and enjoy the things that make him happy, he does ultimately cave to societal expectations of himself, out of a desire to maintain the bonds with his allies and, dare he even call them his friends, even if it means sacrificing a bit of his identity to do so.
Ace, himself, however, is also the symbolic equivalent of the chocobos. In particular, he’s the symbolic equivalent of a chocobo from his own past.
“When he was very young, Ace saved a Chocobo chick he found that had been abandoned by its mother. Unfortunately, the chick later died due to illness. Even though Ace has little recollection of this, he still feels a pinch of sentiment for the lively creatures.” — Crimson Codex; Ace’s character page; Page 2.
Now, whether you personally consider the events in Chapter 8 to be abandonment or not isn’t really relevant for debate. Arecia Al-Rashia did leave her children on their own to combat the events of Finis and to complete the final pages of the Akashic Record from within the dungeon Pandemonium. She was nowhere to be found, and she had little intention of interfering in the game’s cycle, as she hadn’t done in every cycle prior. In this cycle, the Lulusath Arbiter (Rursus Arbiter, for the localization people) is defeated only once Class Zero is saved from death’s door by Machina and Rem using their l’Cie abilities to empower them from within their respective crystals. And as we all know pretty well, this only saved them temporarily from death, as with their own phantoma expended, Class Zero succumbed to their wounds shortly after the battle once they returned to their classroom. At which the revived/freed Machina and Rem enter the room and, suddenly, overcome with grief, Machina manages to forgive them for Izana’s death and the two of them carry the memory of their fallen classmates forward. Despite the twist on the ending, it’s an intentionally similar narrative in the baseline of how the events play out.
Obviously, Ace is not an actual chocobo, though, he does possess many similar traits to them: steadfast loyalty, strength, speed, a desire to remain with others of its kind like family or friends, and a pretty similar color scheme to the chocobo from Chocobo Dungeon (that chocobo even has a satchel like Ace does!). It’s the sheer weight that this particular character trait holds in the overarching world of Orience, however, that makes it important to note, because the birds themselves hold such a particular reputation that it’s hard to believe it’s merely coincidence. Ace’s character is constantly put in comparison or in juxtaposition to the birds he likes (and admires) so much, yet we never see the same compassion from similar individuals, except Machina. It’s a smaller detail that, when looked alongside its entire whole, begins to connect the patches that seem irrelevant and fill the voids in this game’s already incredibly elaborate tapestry.

and i believe in love.
so i just got back from watching wonder woman. i’ve cried a lot. my life was changed in the span of a couple hours. i had to write something.
to those who have not seen the movie yet, there will be spoilers, so read on with caution.
gal gadot’s wonder woman and i are not that similar at first glance. diana is a statuesque demigoddess who translates sumerian like it’s no big deal and lifts tons of metal without breaking a sweat. i’m barely bilingual, and after walking a couple blocks i just want to fall into bed and sleep for a year. but diana and i are cut from the same cloth where it matters most.
diana’s innocent conviction, her heedless charging into the “real” world, her indignant reaction when people don’t act the way she expects them to, because she expects them to be better--that’s exactly how i remember being, before that “real” world pushed and folded me into silence and wary resignation. whenever diana demanded of the generals, of her mother, of steve, “how could you say that? how could you let this happen?” she was voicing aloud what i’ve been asking everyone, and myself, all this time, deep down.
people always talk about how heroic characters do what we’ve always wanted to do deep down, but they’ve usually framed it as slaying the dragon, beating the bad guy. i never doubted that sentiment, but somehow i never related to it--until now. diana chafes against dressing conventionally, refuses to be silent in a room full of generals and asserts her opinion, and wants to go immediately to the front where she believes with all her heart she must be. steve can only keep her from causing a debacle by convincing her that by playing along just a little bit, just for now, they can both achieve their goals. and she does play along, just barely.
but they get to the front. she still doesn’t understand the war completely, but she sees its toll. and for her that’s all that matters. she refuses to resign herself to the “world of man” and its resignation, its complacency, its overcomplication, its dithering and its excuses--the world we’ve been told, and have had to accept, as the "real” one that we have to “grow up” and face. right and wrong isn’t always murky water; we’ve just made it that way. diana could see what was right, clear as day, and she made her choice.
the moment she turned around, her hair loose, antiope’s crown on her brow, armor bared, and stepped into no man’s land because she wanted to stop people from being killed, i cried. so many times i wanted to do that, say no and stand up for myself and other people. so many times i was humiliated for trying, or convinced by grownup logic. so this is what you mean when you say heroes do what we always want to do.
we know the whole time that diana’s notion of the war and its cause is inaccurate, her view of the world too black and white, but her brazen confidence that she knows what has to be done incites pity more than scorn, and what drives her is pure altruism, portrayed more convincingly than almost anything else i’ve seen in a long time. to quote dickens, her good intentions were “bent and broken,” but “into a better shape.” the broad strokes of her story are not dissimilar to most others about heroes and coming of age, but what makes it so remarkable is how real it is. most people now, when they hear “realistic,” they think of gritty tales along the lines of homo homini lupus, waxing poetic about how cruel mankind is but glamorizing that cruelty anyway. wonder woman refuses to do the latter.
it’s like the saying goes, you didn’t know you needed it till you got it. this movie was it for me. i laugh in the face of people who don’t like it, or are reluctant to, because it’s female-led, female-oriented, because diana says men are essential to procreation, but unnecessary for pleasure. the movie was almost entirely devoid of the male gaze, critical of the ways sexist men make themselves dominant--when a group of soldiers holler at diana she’s unperturbed, but steve quickly steers her away from them. diana clearly comes to love and care about steve at a level that’s painfully relatable, but he only touches her when she lets him. ludendorff caressing isabel maru’s cheek and taking diana into a dance, forcing them into close proximity with him, are actions portrayed as discomforting and disgusting, as they should be. diana and the rest of the amazons are all tall, beautiful, dressed in amazing fantasy armor--easy on the eye, sure, but the focus isn’t completely on their bodies. when diana fights she makes faces--unattractive ones, because those are the kinds of faces one makes when one fights! twice she takes off normal clothes to expose her armor, and neither instance is treated as an eye candy shot. diana more than holds her own in battle and is highly intelligent, but she can be unsure and insecure. that’s a familiar premise, but this time those faults are believable, not just a way in for the hero to be her emotional crutch, and for the male audience in turn to fantasize that she’ll be vulnerable to them.
and any excuses that the men aren’t treated fairly in the film don’t hold water. steve trevor is not just as a foil to diana but an interesting character his own right. the film reverses several cliche scenarios with him--he’s the one caught naked, the one who makes a sacrifice that aggrieves the hero(ine) but reaffirms her convictions--without sacrificing his character. chief is not just a stereotypical native american, sameer gives diana some perspective on people’s complexities, and charlie--oh charlie, how i loved him over the course of the movie--was not as tough as initially claimed, but it wasn’t portrayed as cause for ridicule. i loved that he sang. they were introduced as an almost typical ensemble, but they had moments of vulnerability, and you understood why they did what they did, chief especially. and when they decide to be better as well, to keep going with steve and diana even though steve couldn’t pay them, you can’t help but feel pride and relief. they remind me of the men i do know, complicated and nothing like the ideal masculine i see everywhere else, hurting in ways they can’t always express in the open, but who deserve chances to be happy, to sing, and who do their best to be good people when push comes to shove.
these are hard times. people always say it, no matter what the time is, but i guess it’s because it’s always true. it’s so easy to slip into grimdark pessimism and just stay there. saying you believe in love sounds cheesy now, something a storybook hero says. but love--selfless, boundless love; the kind you feel when you see a puppy or a sunset; the kind you feel when your best friend laughs or a stranger thanks you in earnest for helping them; the kind that compels people to assemble in the streets to demand justice for themselves and others; the kind that makes you swallow your pride and apologize, and change; the kind that helps you forgive. that kind of love. how can you go wrong by believing in that?
when the movie ended and the lights came on, i went to the bathroom and wiped my face. as i washed my hands i looked in the mirror, at my thick dark hair, falling in curls. diana, i thought. i kinda look like wonder woman. it was a funny thought, but it made me giddy. i’m kinda like wonder woman. i can be like wonder woman. i might be too old to idolize fictional characters, but seeing someone like diana--unapologetically feminine, loving, honest, the way i always wanted to be deep down--well, it’s hard not to hope i can still be all of that. and what a relief, that girls now and in the future know they can be like that.

5. New Delhi: "Don't make Prashant Bhushan a martyr. Remember, after this court jailed Kalyan Singh in Babri Masjid contempt case for a day, he had received a rousing reception when released from the jail. So don't make Bhushan a martyr," thundered Rajeev Dhawan, Prashant Bhushan's lawyer.
Sometime later, Justice Arun Mishra, heading the SC bench asked why can't Bhushan apologise? Is an apology such a bad word?. If you have hurt somebody's feelings, it is normal to apply the balm. Even Gandhi had apologised so many times."
These exchanges at the fag end of the two-hour-long proceeding sums up the tone and tenor of the hearing of arguments in the Bhushan contempt case. The bench was hearing arguments before deciding the quantum of punishment to be awarded to Bhushan found guilty on August 14 of criminal contempt for his two tweets against present Chief Justice S A Bobde and last four CJIs.
The SC said that the tweets based on distorted facts were a "scurrilous and malafide" attack on the institution of SC which destabilized the foundation of the judiciary.
After concluding the hearing, the SC reserved its verdict. At the outset, the bench said that they had gone through the latest statement of Bhushan in which he refused to apologize unconditionally.
"We were expecting him to do something but that has not happened," the bench said. Attorney General K K Venugopal reiterated his stand that SC should close the chapter after the guilty order and should not punish him or sentence him considering his pro-bono work and his achievement in the arena of Public Interest Litigation.
"Your Lordship may forgive him. Let him off with a warning," the AG said adding "As Mr Bhushan said, even retired SC judges have made such comments and can we haul them up for contempt?"
AG also referred to the famous press conference called by four sitting judges in which they said: "democracy is in danger." Just close the matter by telling him to not repeat this," AG urged.
Repeatedly going through the tweets and two statements made in court by Bhushan, Justice Mishra said that Bhushan should at least realise his mistake and say sorry. AG repeated, "I'm speaking for the Bar. Take a compassionate stand. Let him off with a warning."
While replying to this, Justce Mishra said, "We judges can talk through our judgements only. We cannot come out in public and respond to the attacks or criticism. But he has made very derogatory remarks."
AG added at this juncture, saying, "He has expressed regret in the 2009 matter. Let him say this in the present matter too and say he expresses regret. That will be the statesmanship."
Justice Mishra further replying by saying, "Learned AG, please read his reply. See what he has said, Supreme Court has collapsed. Isn't that objectionable? There is a positive part of the statement by Prashant Bhushan in which he says he has faith in this institution. But at the same time he says, he won't apologise since be hasn't made any mistake. Everyone makes mistake but the person must also realise it. What to do now?"
Referring to the guilty verdict, Dhawan said, "Offence of Scandalising the court is subjective and same goes with finding that he committed a scurrilous and malicious attack."
Bhushan's comments should be taken in a positive manner and for the betterment of the judiciary, Dhawan said and urged the curt to take the tweets and his statements as constructive criticism."He has always been a loyal officer of the court. All his tweets are based on his bonafide belief," Dhawan said.
"An apology cannot be a mere incantation, an apology has to be sincerely made and he(Bhushan) sincerely says that "this is my belief." he said, adding, "If your Lordships initiate contempt, am I not supposed to offer my defence. And he (Bhushan) has systematically offered a defence for each of the statements (in tweets) made by him."
"This court can only survive on the basis of strong criticism," said Dhavan. "All his tweets and statements were opinions made in good faith," he added.
"Similar statements were made by Retd. Justices Lokur, A P Shah Kurian Joseph. Are they also in contempt?" Dhavan further asked. He further said, "This court can even make statesman like a message to all lawyers like "in future be a little restrained in your attack and before you do that be sure with the facts."
"Please show statesmanship and close the case. If you want to impose a jail term, my advice would be don't make Prashant Bhushan a martyr. Like what happened after Babri was demolished & Kalyan Singh was convicted of contempt." he said.
Dhavan said this controversy will end only if this court shows statesmanship. Justice Mishra, towards the end of the hearing, said, "By the way, I want to say all of you lawyers should not be going to press in pending matters. An officer of a court is not a politician. Do not attach too much with a cause. And also see a person of stature of Bhushan should not be making such a reckless tweet. People take it seriously."
"People will stop coming to court if you destroy and finish the institution like this," said Justice Mishra. He further said, "It's so painful to say all this just before I'm to demit office, said the judge who is retiring on September 2."
Justice Mishra added, "It is about the system. If we are going to destroy each other, who will have faith in this institution? You have to be tolerant, see what the court is doing and why. Don't just attack. Judges can't go to press to defend themselves or explain."
He continued by saying, "Whatever we have to say, we have to write in our judgments. There are so many things but do we have to go to the press? I will never do that. That's the ethics for judges. If we are going to fight each other, pull each other down, we will finish this institution. If Bar and Bench are going to destroy each other, who will have faith in this institution? Don't just attack. Judges cannot go to Press to defend themselves. You (lawyers) are our voice."
Earlier,  Bhushan refused to apologise and told the SC that his tweets were "constructive criticism".
SC had concluded that Bhushan in his tweets against Chief Justice S A Bobde and last four CJIs based on distorted facts made a "scurrilous and malafide" attack on the institution of SC which destabilized the foundation of the judiciary.
Bhushan, in the statement submitted to the court, said any unconstitutional apology at this stage would amount to "contempt of his conscience" as they were based on his "bonafide belief". He urged that the tweets should only be seen as, "constructive criticism so that the court can arrest any drift away from its long-standing role as a guardian of the Constitution and custodian of peoples’ rights."
Referring to a photo dated June 29 of CJI Bobde sitting on a Hardley Davidson bike, Prashant Bhushan had tweeted, “CJI rides a 50 Lakh motorcycle belonging to a BJP leader at Raj Bhavan Nagpur, without a mask or helmet, at a time when he keeps the SC in Lockdown mode denying citizens their fundamental right to access justice."
The second tweet dated June 27 said, "When historians in the future look back at the last six years to see how democracy has been destroyed in India even without a formal emergency they will particularly mark the role of the Supreme court in this destruction and more particularly the role of the last 4 CJIs.
6. Final Verdict:
In his statement filed in response to the August 14 verdict holding him guilty of contempt, Bhushan paraphrased the words of Mahatma Gandhi, saying,
"I do not ask for mercy. I do not appeal to magnanimity. I am here, therefore, to cheerfully submit to any penalty that can lawfully be inflicted upon me for what the Court has determined to be an offence, and what appears to me to be the highest duty of a citizen."Prashant Bhushan statement
Learned Legal Luminary’s above statement has enlightened me go through the Foreword of Mahatma Gandhi’s Autobiography, “My Experiments With Truth” & I quote :
“This truth is not only truthfulness in word, but truthfulness in thought also, and not only the relative truth of our conception, but the Absolute Truth, the Eternal Principle, that is God. There are innumerable definitions of God, because His manifestations are innumerable. They overwhelm me with wonder and awe and for a moment stun me. But I worship God as Truth only. I have not yet found Him, but I am seeking after Him. I am prepared erto sacrifice the things dearest to me in pursuit of this quest. Even if the sacrifice demanded be my very life, I hope I may be prepared to give it. But as long as I have not realized this Absolute Truth, so long must I hold by the relative truth as I have conceived it. That relative truth must, meanwhile, be my beacon, my shield and buckler. Though this path is straight and narrow and sharp as the razor’s edge, for me it has been the quickest and easiest. Even my Himalayan blunders have seemed trifling to me because I have kept strictly to this path. For the path has saved me from coming to grief, and I have gone forward according to my light. Often in my progress I have had faint glimpses of the Absolute Truth, God, and daily the conviction is growing upon me that He alone is real and all else is unreal. Let those, who wish, realize how the conviction has grown upon me; let them share my experiments and share also my conviction if they can. The further conviction has been growing upon me that whatever is possible for me is possible even for a child, and I have sound reasons for saying so. The instruments for the quest of truth are as simple as they are difficult. They may appear quite impossible to an arrogant person, and quite impossible to an innocent child. The seeker after truth should be humbler than the dust. The world crushes the dust under its feet, but the seeker after truth should so humble himself that even the dust could crush him. Only then, and not till then, will he have a glimpse of truth. “
Accepting the essence of Truth absolutely as prescribed above by Father Of the Nation , this Court Retracts Its Judgement dated 14/08/2020 that pronounced him guilty.
The learned lawyer, Mr. Prashant Bhushan is a free bird to #CHIRP henceforth as prescribed above in letters & spirit of Mahatma Gandhi .
This Case , now stands Closed .
