a little Sambucky ~

Bucky starts collecting vinyls. Sam notices them accumulate in his apartment. How very typical of Bucky to buy records while refusing to invest in a mattress. Sam glances at the pile of blankets shoved under Bucky’s couch and regrets it.

“Even thinking about you sleeping on this floor every night makes my back hurt.”

“I sleep on the couch sometimes.”

“Yeah?” Sam claps a hand on Bucky’s shoulder with a laugh. “That’s great, maybe we’ll be able to get you in a bed before the next century.”

“It’s a lot less important than you make it seem.”

“If you slept in a bed you’d see my side.” Sam squeezes Bucky’s shoulder and leans into him. “You know I’m just looking out for you.”

“I know,” Bucky says softly and Sam can tell he’s smiling.

“What’re you doing?” Sam leans over Bucky’s shoulder to get a look at the kitchen counter which is littered in tea bags of every color. It looks like Bucky just dumped them all out of the jar he stuffs them in. Why he can’t keep the different flavors in their individual boxes, Sam has no idea.

“Makin’ tea. What kind do you want?”

“Umm you pick. Something fruity.” Bucky grins. “Make sure it goes well with—”

“Honey. I know.” Bucky reaches to open the cupboard above him and pull out a honey bear for assurance. Sam gives his shoulders another squeeze before wandering over to a stack of records that hadn’t been here last time Sam came over.

Sam picks through the records on the top, wrinkling his nose at Dire Straits and Journey. He sets those aside so he can get to the box underneath and leaf through them properly.

“Buy anything good lately?”

“You ask me that as if I would buy bad music.” Sam snorts. “But yeah I found a couple European records. I guess it’s called ‘downtempo’. Café music. It’s nice.”

Sam hums doubtfully. He hears the electric kettle start and continues to look through Bucky’s music, gently pulling out one at a time to look at the covers. He doesn’t recognize a lot of these, which Sam immediately equates to Bucky’s inferior taste. God, he hopes Bucky didn’t pick up any of the stuff Zemo played on his jet.

Bucky sidles over and rests his vibranium hand gently on Sam’s hip. With the other he flicks to the back of the crate and quickly pulls out an album in black with white geometric line art on it. Sam quirks an eyebrow just to be difficult.

“If this is some weird indie shit—”

“Just let one side play out, Sam. Then pick something else if you hate it, but you won’t cause it’s good.”

As Bucky slips the record from it’s sleeve, Sam plops onto his couch. He stretches his arms and leans back, closing his eyes. This has become sort of a routine for them: Sam coming over and Bucky playing his music. It helps Sam unwind, relax, finally exhale the intensity he feels he’s always holding inside. Bucky’s one of the few people Sam can truly be at ease with. They give each other a lot of shit but it comes from a place of truly embracing one another for who they are. It’s never in question that they have each other’s backs.

Sam settles more comfortably into the couch. Whatever tea Bucky’s steeping smells lovely. Definitely fruity. Sam only half pays attention as the record spins through the first track but so far it isn’t bad. As the next track starts all smooth keyboard and mellow vibes, Sam might even dare say it’s relaxing. He opens one eye when Bucky presses a steaming mug into his hand.

“Happy Tangerine,” Bucky says with a wink. “With honey.”

Sam smiles and hums his approval, closing his eyes again. The record is unexpected. Somehow the music is both upbeat and very chill. A pleasant ambiance that inexplicably reminds him of tall evergreens against a pink sky. Sam brings the tea to his lips to blow on it.

“What’d you say this was?”

“Downtempo. Downbeat? I had to get the record shipped in from the UK. It was a whole deal.”

A laugh tickles the back of Sam’s throat. “Nerd.”

“You hate it?”

“No…” Sam considers. “It’s almost okay.”

“Mm, told you.” Bucky’s voice is low and soft. Sam can feel the heat of Bucky’s breath on his lips and his heart skips. Their faces must be so close. They’d barely have to lean in at all to close the distance.

Slowly, Sam opens his eyes. He blinks. Bucky’s face isn’t there. Sam tilts his head to look around the room but he knows what he’ll find. Bucky is sitting against the opposite wall right beside his record player, mirroring Sam with his head tilted back and eyes closed. Sam blinks again and slowly, silently, exhales. He looks at Bucky for a moment longer. His upturned face illuminated by sunlight filtering in through the window and catching the dimples of his small smile.

Sam drops his head back again. One day he’ll have to do something about this. The whole imagining what Bucky’s lips would feel like on his. The whole mistaking the steam of his tea for Bucky’s breath as if it would be just as sweet. But for now he lets their old routine play out.

Tease Tidbit Tuesday

This is a secret fic that I started yesterday and only one person knows about it 👀 And if all goes to plan I'll be posting it in the next few days...

He shoves his phone back into his pocket and heads for his truck. He throws his useless toolkit in the back seat before getting behind the wheel. It only takes him fifteen minutes to get home and he really wishes that he lived further away from his aunt. He sits in his driveway for a conspicuous amount of time but he can't seem to get his legs working, something akin to panic making his body feel like lead. Buck will be texting him any minute now, asking where he is, he knows how long it takes from his Tia’s, which seems like intimate knowledge but Buck’s been intertwined with his family for about as long as he has known him. Just last week he’d helped Eddie fix Tia Pepa’s back fence and afterwards they had driven home in Eddie’s truck, Buck behind the wheel and trying not to be distracted by Eddie’s hand on his clothed cock. Buck had definitely run some reds and almost caused a fender bender but it had only taken them ten minutes to get home that day.

It was supposed to be a funny, lighthearted fic but it's by me so of course it's got some angst.

The crack idea about Pharma and Ratchet hand swapping is something I've mentioned on a Discord server but can expound upon here:

The premise of it is a little shaky bc it basically requires that everything in Delphi proceeds as usual up to Pharma getting his hands chopped off and falling to his "death" and Ratchet taking his hands, but for whatever reason the Lost Light decides to go looking for Pharma's body and pick him up before they leave the planet? So it's a situation where Ratchet has Pharma's hands but Pharma is also on the Lost Light (as a prisoner probably, but still).

But anyways Pharma finds out about Ratchet taking his hands and is fucking pissed that he didn't even wait for Pharma to be confirmed dead before stealing his body parts. But Pharma decides to be devious about it and is like, "Ratchet get your old hands out of the fucking garbage heap and put them on me, I'll show that all your whining about your hands being shitty is just you bitching and I could do surgery better with your hands."

So they clean off Ratchet's old hands and put them on Pharma, and after Pharma gets some tools to do a tune-ups, an epic contest of hand dexterity ensues where Pharma and Ratchet compete in increasingly silly tasks like surgery (using a dummy or something), fingerspelling with chirolinguistics, writing by hand (Rodimus makes them do his paperwork for him), cooking, insert list of more silly things for them to compete in.

Unfortunately the competition ends in a tie and Ultra Magnus (who probably wrote down the set of rules by which Pharma and Ratchet would be judged) decrees that both of them have to apologize and compliment each other courteously on their hand skill, then swap their hands back.

Pharma is still in prison tho bc he like, killed people lol.

And then there's one last punchline at the end that I'll keep unspoiled for now so that if/when I write this fic, no one will have it spoiled for them the big joke at the end lmao

WIP Wednesday - Record Store AU

Little Chapter 18 WIP snippet from my Like A Record I Keep Goin' Round fic. Featuring Ed and Stede being domestic and their usual silly selves.

“How is this my life?” Ed wonders moments later as he brushes his teeth side by side with Stede in the garish peach and pistachio colored bathroom. Stede catches his eye in the mirror and smiles at him, mouth full of toothpaste foam. It’s so fucking goofy that Ed has to spit his mouthful of toothpaste into the sink to keep from choking on his own laughter, which gets Stede going until they’re both a giggling toothpastey mess. “That’s something they never show you in those Colgate commercials,” Ed comments when they’re both able to breathe again. “What is?” “All foamy mouths. They’re always freshly rinsed. Not realistic at all man.” “You’re right! They never do! I doubt any of those actors are actually using the toothpaste at all in those commercials. They’re just putting an artful swirl on the brush!” “Blatant false advertising.” “Incorrigible, even. Where’s the public outcry?” “For more realistic toothpaste commercials? Reckon it’s just no one wants to see attractive people with mouths full of foam spitting into their sinks man. Ruins the illusion of perfection.” “I suppose no one wants to see someone like me brushing their teeth.” “What?! Are you kidding me? You’d be like exactly what they’re lookin’ for. Now, someone like me? Nah, hard pass.” “I beg your pardon, you’re far better looking than I am! Easily! No contest!” “Reckon you’re a little biased babe.” The endearment slips out before Ed’s brain has the chance to catch up with his mouth. Stede looks at him a bit dumbfounded, blushing. “Uh… forget I said that.” “No!” “No, right. Should have asked, too soon and all that.” “No, Edward I liked that! You just surprised me is all.” “Yeah?” “Yes. I don’t think anyone’s ever given me a pet name before. Well… a nice one anyway.” Ed has so many questions, but it really doesn’t feel like the time for any of them. “Well, uh, good! ‘Cuz, I’ve got a lot of them.”

as an omnivore but with Food Issues TM i have never tried heart (too many tubes). BUT... the internet assures me that game bird hearts are very tasty. bite-sized, concentrated, intensely savory. many of the recipes i found also suggested covering them in salt/bacon which may be part of the appeal lol. i am consistently humbled and amazed by the variety and amount of food humans of this time period had, just at the beginning of agriculture. but i assume it's a little harder up in ye olde mountains of depression, hehe. maybe one day i'll write that fic about what skrael was doing while bells was down in the valley... :3c

and the dead thing metaphor...man. there's at least fifteen years of queer weight behind this at this point, and it's still one of the images that feels so close to my hand. but. yeah. man. orz

12 Days of WIP/Fic Recs

Hi, hello, random Tumblr user who happens to be reading this.  Are you interested in finding more really unique and exciting stories made by your fellow writeblrs?  A lover of fanfics, looking for some good reads to enjoy during the holidays?  Then boy have I got some stories for you.

...Did I write the above like a marketing pitch because I couldn’t think up a good intro?  Yes, maybe, but anyways, it’s December, we’re roughly 12 days out from Christmas, and it’s that time of year where it feels like the perfect excuse to do something like this--namely, freak out about other people’s stories for almost two weeks.  So starting tomorrow, I’m going to be posting daily recommendations for some of my favorite WIPs and fanfics right up until Christmas (with an additional ‘honorary mentions’ post the day after, since this was...surprisingly hard to narrow down).  Hopefully, you guys will find some awesome new stories to enjoy.

And to the people I’m reccing--y’all are insanely talented and deserve more love.  Hopefully you don’t mind me geeking out about your stuff.

All of these will be tagged as ‘12 days of wip/fic recs,’ for anyone who wants to follow along.  (And if anyone wants to join with their own recs--feel free!)

I haven't read any yet but I'm a little nervous about reading IDW Optimus. I like it when Optimus prime is "strong enough to be kind" and from what I've heard, everyone's an asshole to each other in idw. If I'm way off base please let me know, I hear the comics are good but I'm not interested in an Optimus that's mean and miserable. I resent the idea that misery has greater artistic merit than joy.

I mean, I'd say don't trust what the fandom says about the comics (or any media for any fandom in general tbh) because the majority of the time they're wrong.

I'm an IDW Optimus apologist so I'm a little biased, but I genuinely think that most of the story moments people call him "an asshole" over are moments that make 1000% sense when you read them in context. Like, people act like Optimus is just a jerk that goes around being mean to people for no reason when the reality is that when he's frustrated, angry, lashes out, or distant from other people, it makes perfect sense as to why??? IDW Optimus is still a noble person that believes in mercy, gives people second chances, and thinks that treating people like people is better than ending them because it's more convenient. It's just that in IDW he's more than just a noble hero icon, he's also a human that sometimes runs out of patience and snaps at people, or makes mistakes that he can't take back.

When IDW OP lashes out at people, it's not because he's a meanie jerk >:((( or whatever the fuck haters think, it's because he's incredibly idealistic and has high moral standards, and when people/the world don't measure up to them he gets frustrated. In other words, he's so passionate about doing something, about trying to help, that that passion can turn into frustration when things aren't going well. It's the fact that his virtues can be both a virtue and a flaw depending on the situation that makes him feel like the most interesting OP to me.

Also, IDW is a realistic and gritty continuity, embroiled in politics and conflict that leaves no one untouched. and Optimus is in a position of power over an army. I think it's really stupid to expect the commander of an army who gets into politics afterwards to be a squeaky clean hero who does nothing wrong and everyone likes him.

And also also, almost every single complaint I hear about IDW OP either takes his actions completely out of context or just straight up gets basic story facts wrong lmao. Like people will call him an asshole for punching Prowl when what Prowl actually did to get punched was using Devastator to try to destroy a space bridge despite knowing it would lead to the death of an entire Cybertronian colony. People call IDW OP an asshole for "not letting the Dynobots leave the planet" in Monstrosity when actually OP was the one telling them that he would help find a cure for their beastial forms, and when they decided to leave Cybertron anyways, he didn't stop them. People even get mad at him for making Megatron give a speech telling the Decepticons to stop fighting, even though Optimus was already being ridiculously lenient by letting Megatron on parole to be co-captain of the Lost Light!

The main reason people hate IDW Optimus is because they just cherrypick his worst moments without including the context and they ignore his good moments in the story. And also instead of accepting that IDW OP is his own version of Optimus that can be interesting if you give him a chance, they basically hate him for not being a cardboard cutout of a meek depressed uwu Optimus/a silly funny stupid dad character.

Ahem...

Optimus apologism aside, I would really, really just ignore what people say about everyone being assholes in IDW1. Just because a lot of the subject matter is dark doesn't mean that the story says that nothing in life matters and people suck-- far from it. Even Barber (whose writing I think is mediocre and shittily executed), who constantly writes Optimus being shit on, still gives him moments where he's allowed to be the hero that chooses peace and reconciliation.
