(i am seriously late in posting about this due to The Problems BUT whatever! its here now!!)

somewhere around late november 2022, i asked my dad "hey are there any out of print technical books you'd like a reprint of for christmas?"

he linked me to a dubious black-and-white pdf of Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy. now, i wound up checking out a copy through link+, and the original edition is a really nicely put together book! the chapters are themed around various types of measurements (length, angle, etc), and they all have these cute little diagrams which the endpapers reuse in a lil repeating pattern... the image captions are done in this really lovely dark red that did not scan for SHIT... tons and tons of diagrams and illustrations and images (both color and b&w)... just, all around, a fucking nice book!! (see also @morrak's post about it here.)

and that made me feel kind of bad about the crappiness of the pdf, which is where the Problems began. i used my phone to take pictures of all the photos and color diagrams in the original and went about replacing them in the pdf, using what turned out to be the world's worst pdf editing software (i also got through replacing all the image captions in chapter 1 of 5 before my dad convinced me to give up). i did NOT finish the pdf editing before christmas 2022 (i was going somewhat off the deep end, because both my housemates were away visiting family and i had zero external structure in my life so it was just me and my cat and this stupid FUCKING pdf wrecking my sleep schedule together); i poked away at it for most of the rest of my time off and then got so goddamn sick of it i put the project away for months. "it'll be a birthday gift instead", i said optimistically (my dad's birthday is in april! it should have been enough time!)

gentle readers, i did not finish the pdf editing by april. mostly because it was such a miserable slog that i put it off until the last possible moment and then tried to make up for it with another death march.

hating both myself and the project again, i decided i was Not going to let myself typeset Anything Else before it was done, and then took a break to bind my immortal (using the renegade publishing typeset! i didn't do any typesetting!!). SURELY, i said, i can finish this in time for christmas 2023.

i'm sure you know where this is going.

in my defense i DID finish the pdf editing by christmas, despite first doing every other possible procrastination project (including a second edition of the little second century warlord book), because by this point my dad had managed to convince me to lower my standards. on the evening of the 22nd i kicked off the print job and said to myself "this will finish printing overnight and then tomorrow i can work on sewing the textblock!"

late on the 23rd, after lots of babysitting and using at least one cartridge of every color ink in my printer, the print job was finally done. (my sweet and lovely cat wants SO BADLY to hunt and stalk the printer while it is printing -- more specifically, the printed pages, i think because they tend to make noise and move and then STOP moving. for this reason, the printer is kept in the craft room, because the cat can be shut out of the craft room and thus prevented from chewing on the pages when i have an all-day book printing job going. unfortunately the craft room was also being pressed into service as a guest room at the time so 80% of the floor space was consumed by an air mattress which i had to repeatedly trip over in order to reach the printer and replace the ink cartridges.)

then i went to my parents' house on the 24th and 25th and apologized to my dad (again) for not having the book finished. but this worked out well because we finished putting together my awesome new book clamp:

(the feet still aren't done being painted so they're just dry-fit on for now but you can still clamp books in it and that's what matters!!)

i came home, sewed the textblock (french link stitch over four linen tapes, with sewn endbands made of variegated embroidery floss over linen cord, and kozo paper glued over the spine)

... and promptly realized i SHOULD HAVE PUT IN MORE OF A GUTTER because some of the text was getting reeeeeeal close to the spine. "it's fine!" i said. "i just have to make sure it lays flat!! what better time than to try out K118 binding, a technique i have literally never done before and which people on the bookbinding discord notoriously have a hard time pulling off first try! i even have tyvek tape for it!"

so it turns out that tyvek tape isn't actually tyvek with glue on it, it's tape FOR attaching pieces of tyvek TO EACH OTHER, which maybe i could have guessed if i'd done even the slightest amount of research or planning. at this point i think it was the 27th and i was still angling to get this thing done by new year's, so no time to order Actual Tyvek.

fortunately, i had ALSO received An Package in the mail with yarn for a totally unrelated knitting project... shipped in a tyvek envelope.

i peeled all the shipping labels and stickers off my tyvek envelope, cut that shit up, and glued it on there.

and THEN it was time for gluing on covers, which i thought was going to be easy because i had actually thought ahead and ordered materials (specifically acid-free museum board), except when i cracked open the box of museum board i decided i Didn't Like It because the surface was too soft and easily dented, so i glued onto it the too-thin board material i'd previously been using (so that the cardboard goes on the outside of the book). this worked super well (the cardboard stuff has a tendency to curl up from the glue moisture, but the museum board doesn't!) and i'll probably use it on other stuff in the future.

i thought the blue bookcloth i used was kind of boring but i showed my dad the available cloth options and he really liked it, so... what do you know? i cut the piece i used on the back cover very slightly too short but it wound up being covered by the leather, so you can barely tell.

and the leather... a scrap just baaaaarely big enough from my bag of leather scraps from discount fabrics... and this the first time i'd ever attempted to put leather on a book... AND YET the only complaint i have is that i didn't manage to put an even amount on the front and back. it's reasonably square and straight!! amazing!!

i am super super happy with how this project came out (especially given the number of problems i encountered) and oh my god check out how much the spine bends

AND, AS A NEW YEAR'S PRESENT, I FINALLY MANAGED TO GIVE IT TO MY DAD

Pandora Hearts Month 2022 (REDO) Prompts!

Hello all!

I have recently learned that the @phmonth2022 blog is experiencing some technical difficulties—and has for longer, and a greater extent, than I realized. I don't get notifications properly, I don't get notified at all if people tag the blog, my posts don't show up in site's tags, and it seems you have to click on the blog itself to see any of its posts.

It seems as though a number of people who wanted to participate in Phmonth22 in May/June...never saw the posts about it.

This means that we will now be doing a redo of Pandora Hearts Month 2022!

It will have the same exact prompts as before, allowing people who didn't see it before—and anyone who otherwise didn’t get the chance before—to participate now! It will occur at the same time as The Case Study of Vanitas Month 2022! (Check here for those prompts!)

How does a Figure Skating (Senior) Season look like? - A guide for YoI fanfic writers

Since Yuri on Ice mainly deals with the Grand Prix Series and other competitions are only mentioned as a side note, I've noticed that many writers seem to struggle with how a season in figure skating looks like. So here is what I've gathered from my years of watching and research!

Disclaimer: I am only human and I make mistakes. I am by no means saying that this is to be accepted as truth without question. If there are any errors, please tell me and I'll fix them!

The new season starts on July 1st. Hence the July 1st cut off. That means that anyone who hasn't turned 15 by June 30th isn't elligable for Senior competition that season (Which means that even though Yuri Plisetsky was 15 for the World Championship we see in Episode 1, he wasn't allowed to compete there).

On July 1st or the end of June is also when we usually get the Grand Prix Assignments. There are 6 qualifying competitions + the Grand Prix Final.

The 6 qualifying competitions usually are:

Skate Amerika (USA)

Skate Canada International (CAN)

Internationaux de France (FRA) (This season called Grand Prix de France...no one knows why...)

Cup of China (CHN)

NHK Trophy (JPN)

Cup of Russia/Rostelecom Cup (RUS)

This season (22/23) the Cup of China and Russia are replaced (for obvious reasons) by the MK John Wilson Trophy (GBR) and the Grand Prix Espoo (FIN)

The location of the Final changes every season. This season it's in Torino in Italy.

So in July we get the Assignments. Funniest thing about that and something I think is worth including in stories is: The skaters find out the same way we do. By either camping on twitter and waiting for the ISU to tweet that they uploaded them, or by refreshing the website every 5 minutes around the time they or some other source said they'd drop them. This season the assignments dropped on July 22nd...it was nerve wrecking...poor skaters...

The ISU is also located in Switzerland. Assignments drop between 3 and 5 pm. So worst case, Yuuri and Viktor will stare at twitter at 1am in Japan waiting for the ISU to ge their shit sorted out. That's what the triplets where shown doing in the anime xD

But the Grand Prix Series isn't the first thing that happens. For starters, let's look at national competitions...

As for Japan...

First of all, if your skater isn't already qualified for nationals by placing well enough at them the year before (the medalists get "seeded" by the JSF), they need to go to Regionals first (Like Yuuri when he finished 11th at Nationals after the GPF). That's late September, early Oktober depending on the region.

Now, Yuuri technically would have needed to also go to Sectionals after that! Which isn't shown in the anime! That's in late Oktober. Unless Yuuri does finishes on top at sectionals, he's not going to Nationals...

But that wasn't shown in the Anime because it would have been repetitive and Sectionals also overlap with the first two GP events a lot.

As for Russia...

I honestly never cared enough. The men weren't interesting enough imo and Russia is the reason women's singles stresses me tf out and I barely watch it...

But as far as I know, to qualify for Nationals they need to compete in 2 out of 5 stages of the Russian Cup Series. It functions similarly to the ISU Grand Prix. Skaters are seeded immediatly if they are assigned to the ISU Grand Prix or qualify for the Junior GP Final. So neither Viktor, nor Yuri needed to bother with that.

Beforehand however, there are the test skates. They are in early September and that's not a competition. It's literally just a televised program announcement and they get fedback. No points, no medals.

August - December:

Another type of International competition is the Challenger Series. Skaters who are not assigned a GP Event may go there instead. They are ranked below the GP Series and there isn't a final. But the ISU recognizes Personal and Seasons Bests there aswell as World records. Nebelhorn is also used as the final qualifying competition for the last remaining olympic spots.

Most well known are:

US International Skating Classic (USA)

Lombardia Trophy (Italy)

Autumn Classic International (Canada)

Nebelhorn Trophy (Germany)

Ondrej Nepela Trophy/Memorial (Slovakia)

Finlandia Trophy (Finland)

Golden Spin of Zagreb (Croatia)

Oktober - December

What you've all been waiting for: The Grand Prix Series

As mentioned before, 6 qualifying competitions: Skate America, Skate Canada Int., Internationaux de France, Cup of China, NHK Trophy, Cup of Russia/Rostelecom Cup. Not always in that order.

They get assigned spots based on their placing in worlds or their ranking in ISU standings. So, unlike I first thought when I watched the Anime (I did not know about the GP Series before), regionals did not matter for Yuuri's Grand Prix spots.

If it had been a minimum score issue, Yuuri would have needed to go to a challenger, like Nebelhorn for example.

If I'm totally honest...I don't know exactly how Yuuri got two spots at all? I just accept GP assignments as they come because I don't really understand how they work... It was either the come back rule, or Yuuri got invited by either China or Russia in addition to his guaranteed spot? I have no clue...he got two, I'm not questioning that further because I legit don't understand. Feel free to enlighten me ^^'

Anyway...skaters can compete in max. 2 competitions. Unlike suggested in YoI, there are actually 12 skaters at each event (8 for pairs).

In the end 6 qualify for the final. There is a point system in Place:

At each event, skaters get awarded points for their placement.

place: 15 points

place: 13

place: 11

place: 9

place: 7

place: 5

place: 4

place: 3

The skaters with the highest amount of points advance to the final. If there is a tie, there are several rules to break the tie. For example: Mickey placed 3rd in both of his events and therefor got 22 points. Yuuri got 2nd and 4th and therefor also had 22 points. But since Yuuri placed higher than Mickey in one of his events, Yuuri advanced to the final.

Then the final takes place in early to mid December.

December:

Important for YoI are Japanese and Russian Nationals, which usually fall around Christmas each year. That's where it is determined who is send to the Four Continents or European Championships, aswell as the World Championships.

January/Feburary:

That's when 4CC/Euros usually take place. I suggest looking up dates for the year you are setting your story in or just decide yourself if you want. It's fanfiction after all :D

Also usually in Feburary if relevant: The Olympics.

March:

Late March are the World Championships. And with that the competitive season ends. Unless you want to include the Team Trophy...but I don't really bother with that.

April-July:

ICE SHOWS!!!! :D Or: how competitive figure skaters actually earn money

Also if you want to use an IRL competition as a guide for scoring, program layouts etc... just google "ISU results (insert competition you want to use)". A page should come up that has detailed results with scoring sheets. E.g. Worlds 22

Another Note:

For ISU events the starting order for the short is as far as I understand usually determined by draw. The groups are seperated by ISU rankings. So the first 6 in the standings will be skating in the last group, and draw from the last 6 starting numbers.

For the free there usually is reversed starting order (like in YoI, the person who placed first in the short skates last), though I have also heard that sometimes they draw again based on those standings that time.

Also, there is an exhibition gala and a banquet after almost each of these competitions ;)

It's That Time Of Year Again ... 🌻Litha 2023

My Summer Solstice celebration this year will sadly be a bit more restricted than it has been in years past, but then, that may be a good thing.

Each year, I have some fairly lofty and ambitious plans on how I want to commemorate the longest day of the year. And each year, I end up wearing myself out because I put way too much on my to-do list.

The major difference I have to contend with this year is 1) I'm still in recovery from my surgery leaving me with some physical limitations, and 2) I don't have to balance the celebration with my regular work hours because of #1.

So here I am again, trying to find the right balance between celebrating this wonderful time of year with my ambitious need to do ALL THE THINGS!

Here's hoping I will take a page from my mantra for 2023, and do less ... live more.

We'll see how that goes. Also, technically I'll be celebrating on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this year, simply because I can. Yay! But I'm going to do a little prep on Monday in order to avoid being in the kitchen all day on the Solstice.

okay just because i really like dates/timelines (hashtag history major) can you Please tell me all the birthdays / ages of everyone in the movies? also any other timeline funfacts/details you wanna include. idk what that would be but that’s just the subject of this post, go ham 🫶

okay so the first movie starts on May 22nd, 2007 and ends on the 26th. May 21st is the night Giselle dreamt about Robert, she meets Edward the 22nd, meets Robert the 23rd, spends the 24th with him, they attend the ball on the 25th, and kiss on the 26th.

there's nothing I love more than knowing canon dates and I am very Very thankful to whoever randomly decided May 25th would be the day of the ball.

and then Disenchanted takes place 10 years later.

and now, my headcanons !!

For character ages, Robert is 30, and his birthday is September 5th, 1976. The scripts I have are a bit vague with everyone's age, and he's described as "late 20s" in one and "early 30s" in another, so I just stuck him at 30.

Giselle's is even more vague, with her descriptions just being "fair maiden" however in one copy, Robert says that she "looks 23" but he's unsure. I personally put her at 26, with her birthday being February 28th, 1981.

Morgan we know is 6, and I headcanon that her birthday is September 10th, 2000. Her and Robert having birthdays five days apart is inspired by my dad and I (ours are Sept. 6th and the 11th!) because their relationship reminds me of us :p

Sofia we know is a year old, and I have tried so hard to look at background details that might tell me when Disenchanted takes place (at least what month) but none of the event flyers say anything. Nancy says "we missed her birthday last month", so I've just decided it takes place in March, because I headcanon Sofia was born February 12th, 2016.

I can only hope no details come out about when it canonically takes place now because I love Sofia's birthday being right before Valentine's Day and headcanon that, before she had a name, Giselle would always call her "my little Valentine" and it is whyyyy her middle name is Valentine 🤧

and I don't have as many details for them, but I do headcanon Nancy was 32 in Enchanted, and Edward was 28. I liked the idea of Nancy being the oldest for some reason, idk why. I haven't given them birthdays, but I feel like Edward's probably a Leo.

Oh, and another fun canon detail is, according to the credits, Morgan is 8 years old in the flashbacks that play during Love Power. Because of that, I headcanon Robert and Giselle got married May 25th, 2009, with Morgan turning 9 later that year.

also, sticking with canon and timelines, Disenchanted takes place over the course of five days, or four depending on how you view the wish, I guess. cause I've seen some people say the wish reset the fourth day, but when I watched it, I assumed the day still happened, but no one remembered, so it was still technically the next calendar day? But I suppose the day could've just reset too, idk.

It's the Trans Rights Readathon!

Technically the TRR started on the 22nd, but I've been busy with work and school, so I am participating but on my own, more flexible terms.

Last year, the TRR raised over $234,000. This year, let's try to raise even more! Additionally, there is an actual reading challenge involved, and a BINGO Card!

Since I don't know how long it will take me to read my books, I have given myself a short reading list and do my best to finish them all by Friday, but if not, I'll just finish them as best I can.

My reading list is as follows:

1) A Lady For A Duke by Alexis Hall

2) The Seep by Chana Porter

3) Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki

4) Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

What do all 5 of these books have in common? First, they're all books with transgender protagonists. Second, I already own a copy of each and haven't read any of them!

God qualifies the unqualified

Last night, my Dad asked me a great question. He said "I don't know how you got to be a recruiter. You didn't go to school for it, you were never really a recruiter, and yet, you managed to got the job, even after the unemployment".

And he's right. If you look at my resume, you won't see any recruiting experience in the past 5 years or so. My first HR job was from back in 2012 in college, and that wasn't even a full time job. I was a student worker working in the HR department for our campus bookstore. From 2014 - 2022, I done 0 recruiting/HR. And yet, I was able to transition to recruiting immediately after my last higher ed job and I survived a (very short) layoff last year (laid off on March 22nd, started working my current job on May 1st). Meanwhile, there's still recruiters who didn't survive the layoff in 2023 and I heard, we're expecting even more layoffs in 2024.

My answer? GOD.

God qualifies me, the unqualified, job-hopper to change my career and survived a layoff. God qualifies me, the super entry level recruiters agains thousands of other recruiters who are way more qualified than I am. This is not me bragging about myself, rather, this is me bragging about my God, who, in His grace and mercy, entrusted me with this job.

I recently saw a couple instances that just left me speechless ... I was on LinkedIn and saw this recruiter posted that he had been laid off for the second time in 2023. This recruiter interviewed me in 2022 at a software company that I REALLY REALLY wanted to work at. It was 100% remote, great benefits, even offered paid maternity leave! I remember sending a very nice email to him after he interviewed me, only to be rejected a couple days later. i was crushed, and I think I cried the whole day about it because I really thought I did so well in all the interviews! But now, I see that he was terminated from that employer, managed to get a job but then, ended up getting fired again at the end of 2023. This guy is a veteran recruiter. He recruit for 5+ years, he's worked in big companies, but here he is today, laid off twice with no prospect in sight. What if I somehow got that job only to be let go especially because I am far more entry level than he is ..

Another instance was this recruiter from another huge software company. For this one, I didn't even get an interview, but after I applied, I sent a long message on LinkedIn to connect and to show my interest in the role. I even used chatgpt to write the message because this company is so prestigious and I wanted to make a great first impression. I never got a reply, and she actually never accepted my connection request .. But this week, I saw she posted that she was terminated from that company, after 9 YEARS of working there.

These two people are recruiters with wealth of knowledge and experience. Technically speaking, these two should be able to get a job easily. They are giants, compared to me, just a simple little ant. (I'm never good at analogy, don't judge me). And again, this is not me bragging about my capability, and how good and resilient I am. Far from it! I just want to share how good God is and that if you ever feel unqualified, or what we typically call "imposter syndrome", please know, you are made for such a time like this. Though the world may see you as unqualified, if you got to where you at today, it's because God gave you the qualifications.

So yes, I simply answered my Dad, "it's God" and he didn't answer back but he smiled. I can see the look on his face as if saying "yea it is!"

So many characters in the bible were deemed unqualified by the world's standard. Moses has stuttering problem and a reluctant leader (I do too sometimes!), King David (ugh need I say more), a man after God's own heart and yet he committed adultery and murder, Apostle Paul even called himself the worst sinner (1 Corinthians 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.) and yet, we all know how great his ministry and legacy were. God knows what He's doing when He qualified these people to further His kingdom. Best believe He knows what He's doing in your own life right now.

Do not let the enemy tell you that you're not good enough to be where you at. Do not let the enemy discourage you and make you feel that you are less than. When those thoughts appear, just tell them "My God knows what He's doing".

SECONDLY.... ITS HAPPENING. IT HAPPENED. RILEY X MILLY.

Me and Hella went through HELL AND BACK trying to help him figure it out and after ALL OF THAT WORK he SUDDENLY decides he's just gonna... ignore it all?? FORGET IT ALL?? Riley loves Milly. There's no denying, this is written in stone. Milly will find out if its the last thing I do.

Thirdly, Pips been officially added to the spirit phone gang! Well, the rp of her intro is done as of right now but the contracts been signed. Personally, I think her concept is SO cute so maybe I'm a little biased in terms of Pip.

Fourthly... Horace, and Davey. If you didn't know, Davey is a younger version of good old grandpappy Leeching and Horace is his father, along with the father of Olivia and Percy. That makes Horace the eldest (in terms of timeline) character in the Leeching family.

I do hold my concerns as Davey is a significant crack in the timeline. Grandpappy Leeching and Davey are 2 separate characters, both derived from the same concept and both are beginning to play significant parts in lore. What will happen when they overlap??

Also fun mention Davey has a stuffed duck called Mr Quackers who may or may not be sentient

FINALLY: CONTENTS FOR MAGICAL A+ GIRLS SEASON 2 IS OUT!! I'll make a separate post about this but I am SO HAPPY the supporting boys get more screentime as Bailey wasn't even MENTIONED in season 1 other than as a filler for an evil role which was defo not suited for him.

ALSO JOKES ON U GUYS- bc I'm technically fictional I get to watch the offical magical a+ girls anime whenever I want and all you have are pictures and script drafts MWAHAHA

Periodic Rookie Groups Report No. 19

In Periodic Rookie Groups Report No. 18, I predicted that 2022’s rookie groups would face the same problems as their predecessors, but not the same outcome. At the time, I refrained from speculating whether they would fare better or worse, but now six months into 2022 that point is moot. Rookie groups, in comparison to last year, are doing better. A double-digit number of groups have not disbanded. Neither have there been multiple reports of pre-debut groups scrapping their plans altogether. I am happy to report that despite everything, debuts have remained consistent, albeit still low.

I would not go as far as to say that rookie groups are thriving or are back on the upswing. The times remain too unpredictable for such declarations with the COVID-19 pandemic still casting a long shadow over the industry, especially rookie groups. Case and point: the girl groups ILY:1 and Kep1er as well as the boy group TEMPEST all postponed their debuts, following positive tests among the members, or in the case of Kep1er, staff. Likewise, following positive cases in their ranks, the boy group KINGDOM rescheduled a comeback, while the girl group Billlie canceled their showcase and moved a comeback. Both girl groups NMIXX and CLASS:y rescheduled concerts, the former due to positive cases and the latter citing “COVID concerns.”

Whether any of this portends a more favorable outcome for the rest of the year, or a backslide into what was happening last year, is not clear. Again, as I said above, the current moment is too unpredictable. Even if I did recommend looking at past data to make predictions about the future, it would not help here. This year, as well as the previous two years, have deviated from that pattern of steady comebacks and steady debuts, with the occasional hiccup, that was typical of the industry. Now, rookie group numbers fluctuate dramatically, ready to make a fool of anyone who would try to divine the future from them. All the more reason for me to adopt the stance I have so often throughout these reports, and just wait and see.

2021 Rookies

Of the 59 groups that debuted in 2021, four groups—one boy group and three girl groups—disbanded between January and June. They are as follows:

HOT ISSUE: On April 22nd, 2022, S2 Entertainment announced in a statement on the girl group’s (April ‘21) fan café that following a long discussion with the group members they had come to the mutual decision to disband.

PLAY:MOON: According to an April 12th, 2022 notice posted on their official Twitter account, 4tossy was leaving the male duo (January ‘21) due to his military enlistment, effectively disbanding them due to a technicality. As a duo, the departure of one member renders it a solo act. In this case, the remaining member Sul Chan Woo plans to continue to promote as a soloist under the PLAY:MOON name.

QODES: On May 3rd, 2022, @nugupromoter tweeted that Yukyung, a former member of the girl group (February ‘21), shared with them in an Instagram DM that the group had disbanded. She did not provide a reason for their disbandment.

Solia: Five days after their debut, the girl group (August ‘21) announced on their official Instagram that the group was disbanding as the company could “no longer lead the group.” In a separate statement on August 26th, 2021 Space Music Entertainment provided a different reason for the group’s disbandment, saying that the members wanted to pursue different directions and thus decided to disband the group.

Subtracting these four disbandments brings the total number of active rookie groups to 55 groups—21 boy groups, 31 girl groups, and 3 co-ed groups. Of these 55 groups, 55% or 30 groups released new music at least once between January and June of this year, with 11% or 6 groups doing so more than once.

Those above numbers come with a disclaimer though. While, at face value, they look good, especially if compared to 2020 and 2021’s numbers where 39% and 38% of the groups that debuted in the previous year made a comeback in the first half of the year respectively, they are misleading. Those percentages look good precisely because 2021 was not a great year for rookie groups and saw a significant drop in the total number of rookie groups debuting. This in turn has skewed the percentage, making it appear as if 2021′s rookie groups have overperformed when their improvement has been more modest.

This is essentially a ninjago content exchange of sorts. You’ll be assigned someone for whom you’ll either draw fanart or write a fanfic, and someone will be assigned to you to do the same thing.

You know... tonight I'm thinking about how I and much of the rest of the fandom had alot of positive feelings about Wizards, even though it had its share of imperfections, in comparison to ROTT, which had such an overwhelmingly negative response.

And I think it's because much of the criticism of Wizards was centered around what we didn't get to see, while criticism of ROTT is largely centered around what we did see (and what we shouldn't have seen).

Two of the most popular criticisms I saw of wizards when it first came out were:

1.) The story was so tightly condensed that there was alot that didn't get to be explored.

2.) Zoe didn't get to have a larger role.

And I think both of these criticisms share one uniting sentiment: we wanted more. The audience loved what we did see, and we wanted to see more of it. We wanted more of Douxie's time in the spotlight/more of Camelot explored/more of The Pink-Haired Girl And What She Means to Douxie. It's INTERESTING and WE LIKE IT.

Since the show only had ten episodes, there was alot that had to be squeezed down/removed to fit in the time allowed, but Wizards spent the time it did have giving us amazing characters, compelling dynamics, and interesting lore expansion that the audience was ENTHRALLED by, to the point where much of the criticism of the installment comes down to: the audience was so intrigued/fascinated by this content that the fact that there isn't more sucks.

Now... cut to Rise of the Titans.

With its runtime of nearly two hours, it theoretically had the chance to do more of what Wizards, as great as it was, couldn't fit in: more of Douxie in the spotlight, expansion on his other relationships (like Zoe & ADP), compelling lore expansion, and smart utilization of characters & completion of character arcs for a satisfying ending.

And... it didn't deliver.

Firstly, let's get one of the big ones out of the way: it used a good ~10 minutes (?) of its runtime, which it could have used for doing something like 1.) a scene of characters who didn't get to interact much in the trilogy 2.) showing us why douxie and nari stopped running/them running at all 3.) my personal favorite, a scene of human jim coming home to his mom - and used it to give one of its side characters with the best character development I saw in the series... one of the grossest "comic relief" subplots I've seen in a long time. I would have rather Steve not been in the movie at all (like perhaps he heard arcadia was in danger and went to make sure his step-dad was okay) than seen that.

...Moving on.

What Douxie was able to do in the movie was good: he was VERY enjoyable to watch on-screen, and his big brother/baby sister dynamic with Nari was simply too precious.

But, like Wizards... it wasn't enough.

After finally getting his chance in the spotlight in the last installment, Douxie was sidelined and kept losing the people he loved left and right for what seemed to be for the mere sake of making him suffer (Nari dying as she killed Skrael/Archie getting stuck in the Hong Kong Trollmarket) when he'd already had to grieve Merlin in Wizards. He also doesn't use his most iconic item from Wizards: his spellcaster guitar. Sometimes, honestly, it seems like all he was there to do was 1.) suffer 2.) do spells (guitarlessly) to help people out and 3.) scream "NARI!"

(But Colin's voice acting DE👏LI👏VERED! Everyone's did, really. There were honestly alot of other aspects to the movie like voicework/animation/music that were really good and it sucks to see it dragged down by all the staggering missteps in writing.)

And arguably the worst aspect of that? His sidelining wasn't even unique to him; to me, every protagonist from the subsequent series' post-trollhunters seemed to be sidelined for the sake of Jim's spotlight.

Which wouldn't have been a problem... if it was used for any other confliction/crisis than him doubting being the trollhunter without the amulet, a question that was already answered in Trollhunters.

Aside from the fact that Jim felt strangely out of character, the whole ~confliction~ he had over being an amulet-less Trollhunter was redundant and felt unnecessary (I sort of wanted Merlin's ghost to show up and thwack him and say "WHAT DID I SAY!? WHAT DID I TELL YOU!?" and dip back out). In my opinion, a better confliction to explore would have been his connection to his humanity, which he'd just gotten back, or coping with what he'd done as a beast under the order's control. But instead, it badly recycled an old aspect of his arc that was already discussed in Unbecoming.

Besides Jim being what I never thought he'd be, an irritating and honestly sort-of unlikable protagonist, other characters were greatly underutilized as well.

...Especially Nomura.

First of all, they made the ridiculous decision to send two trolls with Douxie to Brazil in the daytime, knowing trolls TURN TO STONE IN THE SUN. But THEN, just for the sake of showing how deep Nari is under control, she pulls Nomura into the sunlight and shatters her when she gets petrified. It happens out of nowhere for complete & utter shock value.

To me, it seems like they brought in Nomura for the sake of having Nomura, and then they didn't know what to do with Nomura, so they killed Nomura.

And honestly, not knowing what to do with the characters and deciding to just nerf/kill them was this movie's whole thing.

But it's okay, because we have... the COP-OUT-ENDING-O-MATIC 3000! 🥳🎉

So, because of this little ball of SHAME AND BAD THINGS combined with Jim's edge-brood OOC-ness, not only did the movie give us underwhelming/unsatisfying/devastating-and-not-in-a-good-storytelling-way plotline and giving us so much that was... bad, it took away everything that was good - everything we loved. It was the second worst thing introduced in the story (the first is the entire garbage heap that is 7 kisses = MPreg (even though akiridions are projections from CORES)), and to be completely honest I WISH skrael and bellroc broke Nari and Douxie's spell before nari could say "kronosfere will make right"

(...AND the ninth configuration thing too tbh)

So... while Wizards spent the short time it had giving us something amazing, Rise of the Titans, instead of continuing to deliver on what Wizards couldn't fit in, squandered the potential it had as a finale and used its time to give us gross subplots/frustrating once decisions/underutilization, as well as to take everything else down with it at the very end with the Green Shame Orb.

And... yeah. Technically, it's not exactly two months post-ROTT anymore, because it's like 2 am on the 22nd, but I thought about this a lot felt compelled to share.

Hello! Here’s another collection of anon ask answers all put together in one big post.

This might be strange considering how upbeat yall are about the fandoms for your games in general, but is there any particular trope or ship you WOULDN'T want us writing/drawing/etc. in relation to your stuff? (IE, any canon you don't want us 'overwriting' or something like that?)

Of course we would want the fan content people make to not be racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted, harmful, etc. But in terms of generally doing non-canon pairings or adding in headcanons or stuff, we really don’t mind that. People are welcome to have fun and explore their own ideas.

for the 1.2 Android update was it meant to download as a separate app? I really want to keep my previous save files but they don't show up (also thank u for the updates I'm really excited to get back into the game!!)

We had to change the name of the file and unfortunately for some phones that meant it’s treated as a brand new game. I’m sorry your saves didn’t transfer over to the new version. You can try to look up your specific phone and see if there’s a way to access save files for games on your device and then transfer those saves over to the new build manually. It may or may not be possible.

I'm having some trouble figuring out how to get the update from Itichio without losing my save files? Is it the same game or a folder I can put in the properties? Sorry if this question is not worded well or if this isn't the avenue you'd want to take technical questions on

Are you using Android? If so, the above answer may apply to you. If you’re on PC or Mac, the save files will automatically still be included.

Hey. I really loved playing our life. It was a fun experience and I never thought I would like it this much. I do have a question, I am currently replaying the game and I am choosing choices I never chose at first. In step 2 during the road trip arc, I decided to ask Cove about what he liked to see on people. One of his response was anklets and black eyes. My MC have just happens to have black eyes. Do Cove say black eyes cuz my mc have it or it was just a coincidently programmed into the game?

He uses your eye color intentionally! If you changed your eye color he’d change what he said.

Will step 4 have 10 moments like steps 1-3?

Step 4 is only an epilogue. It plays like the openings/endings of the earlier Steps where it’s a bunch of scenes all in a row, there aren’t any individual Moments.

In the new ol, there are two main love interests... Would it be possible to pair them together or is that weird?

You can’t stay single and pair them together. If we are going to add all the extra content to have a route where the two LIs get together, it’d be a full poly route where them and the MC were all dating. And that’s not a for sure option yet because it’d add a lot of extra complications. But either way, in OL the relationships all gotta be about the MC, haha.

In OL2, there will be extra LIs in form of DLCs? Like Dexter and Baxter.

Since Cove will have 2 diff body types in s4, will the storyline and dialogs reflect this? Or all of it will be the same? Btw love the game and sorry for bad english. Hope this doesn't sound rude 😅

Some descriptions and pieces of dialog will change, but it won’t impact the story really. And you don’t need to apologize! It’s all good.

Will you ever release the transparent sprites of the Our Life characters?

Probably not, I’m afraid. They’ve got a lot of pieces and it’d just be kind of hard to deal with, aha.

Something I was curious about, what was your inspiration for making a game with so much customization?

Initially, the idea was just about having a romance where you actually grew up with the LI. But it was pretty stressful to try deciding how fast the relationship would progress with it taking place over such a long period of time and with no real storyline carrying it. People might not wanna play a game where the characters don’t get along as kids, but other people might not bother with a game where kids immediately liked each other. So the obvious answer came, just let the player pick themselves how it goes. From there we simply continued to add more flexibly with the MC due to the same thought process of wanting to make sure people were onboard with how their life was going.

What made you decide to change the artstyle for ol 2 so much? I of course respect all your decisions and will buy the shit out of everything related to ol 2, but i love the original style and i m honestly not a fan of the styles shown on patreon, despite me liking the painterly style in general. (I don t mind the style being changed, just that the examples shown so far all feel like there s something wrong with them.)

We’ve always used different art styles for each of our projects. They all have distinct looks from each other. It’s just nice to do something new. I’m glad you really like how the first game looks, though. And those samples were only general concepts, rather than the exact options being decided between. We wanted to see reactions to different options. The art style we’re going with won’t be exactly like those, though I personally like all of them. I think players are gonna enjoy the style Our Life: Now & Forever when it’s revealed.

Hey! Is it ok to ask what gender ourlife2 protagonist will be and if we'll be given the same opportunity to customize an MC? Totally understand if you're keeping this under wraps for now if u don't wanna say!

OL2 will have the same type of MC customization as OL1, but even more refined! So their gender will be up to you.

Hi! I happened upon Our Life on Steam by pure chance. It is such a great game, I am super excited about the DLC, and I just want you all to know that you are awesome! :D I have a question, and I'm sorry if it's been asked before. Do you have plans of making more games similar to Our Life, with customizable player character? The customizable player character was probably the one thing I personally have been desperate for in romance VNs. So glad there finally is one and would love to see more.

Thank you! And yep, we do have plans for more games like Our Life, most notably is another game in the franchise- Our Life: Now & Forever. We’ll also likely have other, non-OL, games with customizable MCs, though we may still have some games with set MCs in the future as well.

On the patreon dlc just curious but is it possible to play it without actually sleeping together/getting the nsfw content? I just want to spend more time with Cove

Yeah, you can still choose not to go that far. Though the event is shorter if you pass on the 18+ stuff.

At the beginning of Step 2, did Cove end up accidentally falling asleep in your bed? Or did he fall asleep on the floor?

He fell asleep sitting on the floor with his body/head leaning against the side of the bed.

This may seem like a weird question, but what exactly is the difference between "direct" and "relaxed" on the comfort scale?

Direct is blunter and more teasing, relaxed is lighthearted and goes with the flow.

can the MC have tattoos in step 3?

Not in Step 3, but you can in Step 4.

how would Cove react if he visited somewhere like North Carolina in winter where it can get in the 20s(F) at night sometimes?

He would be shocked and unprepared for what serious coldness is really like, haha. The poor beach baby would wanna go home.

Step 4 will have the Cove Wedding DLC and the Derek and Baxter romance DLCs each add a lot of new content to Step 4, though they’re also partially set in Step 2 and Step 3 respectively. The NSFW DLC happens in Cove’s room.

I keep wondering what would've happened if Mr. Holden met Lizzie first instead of the MC. I can't see that turning out well somehow lol.

It wouldn’t have made a difference. He met the MC’s parents first and they told him about their two kids. He wanted the MC specifically to be Cove’s friend because the two were the same age.

Even though we have a way to go I'm really excited for OL 2! I was curious though, is the next main character going to be adopted again? I thought it was really clever to make the first main character adopted so when players are customizing, they can make them look how ever they like without worrying about pesky genetics. Just wondering!

The OL2 MC is not adopted. We wanted to go for a new dynamic. Instead their parents are their biological single mother who is partially customizable and an off-screen sperm donor father. So the mom will look generally like the MC and any other traits not from her can be assumed to come from whoever the father was.
