Breakfast picnic in the park today- Ginger lemon bars with cardamom almond crust. Because virtual school sends me straight to sugar! 😆 Props to all the parents, especially the ones working and also juggling virtual school. We get a sliver of part time in-Person school and the rest is kicking my butt. And I know I have it easy compared to so many of you. So treat yourself with some baked goods and wine. And get your kids to pamper you with a yogurt honey finger paint facial for home art class! . . . . . #shineon #momswhobake #flatlaylove #huffposttaste #tohfoodie #lemonbars #glutenfreebaking #buzzfeast #cherrybombe #damnthatsdelish #motherhood #mysouthernliving #feedfeedbaking #thefeedfeed #bakefromscratch #thecookfeed #thenewhealthy #kitchn #hellosunshine #rslove #cookitgirl #curbsidefeast #bhgfood #fnchallenge (at Madison, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFhS-D1l0wi/?igshid=7nbrairsplyu

It’s My Party And I’ll Cry If I Want To || Dec. 5
She started by throwing out the presents.
Then the balloons...                                             the streamers...                                                                          the goddamn birthday lingerie.
A journal, a camera, a scrapbook of pictures taken throughout the duration of their marriage. His favorite colors, in light hues that would match the inevitable snowfall that would accompany his birthday. A banner that read ‘Happy Birthday’ in all the colors of the rainbow; a find in a muggle store, pleasantly enough. Red lace. A night planned for just the two of them. Just the married couple that never got to touch each other, to see each other, to hold each other. Just the man and wife who’d made their vows and paid their dues, only to fall apart at the seams.
Just Frank and Alice.
                                             Just Alice.
She sat on the kitchen floor with the cake between her two propped-up legs, looking quite like a milkmaid preparing to churn. Sleeves rolled up to her elbows and hair tied at the nape of her neck, she looked down at the cake, at the mockingly cheery words that seemed not to care that she was all alone, that the birthday boy was six feet underground in the cold dirt of the Scottish Highlands. The icing was well preserved, vanilla in shades of blue, green, and red covering chocolate. Alice’s stomach didn’t rumble, as it usually would when faced with such a masterpiece.
And yet she ate anyway.Foregoing the cutlery in the drawer by her head, she dug into the cake with angry, harsh fingers, pulling up a fistful of icing and chocolate, wasting no time in shoving as much of it into her mouth as she could, swallowing it with an expressionless face. She nearly choked, any yet she remained persistent. It became almost mechanical; fistfuls of cake, red cheeks, smeared mascara, icing on her arms, her chin, her cheeks.
And then the tears began to mingle with the sugar as sobs punctuated mouthfuls. She coughed through moments of breathlessness, never ceasing in the endless inhalation of cake, silencing sobs and godless curses with sugar. Alice wiped a stray hair away from her forehead, sweat dotting her brow; a red streak punctuated her temple and her hairline, but she hardly noticed. Her stomach rumbled antagonistically, protesting the barrage of sugar and heavy sweets that suddenly had remedied its emptiness, and yet she kept eating. She hadn’t eaten like this in months; a sandwich here, a piece of toast there- but nothing large. And certainly nothing on the same scale as an entire cake.
Half of the cake gone, her stomach decided to retaliate. Bile rising in her throat, and face going a ghastly shade of green, Alice scrambled to her feet, throwing herself over the sink, her feet slipping from the tile as she pitched forward, heaving up icing and cake into the drain, a bead of sweat- or perhaps it was a tear- running the length of the bridge of her nose.
With a sob, Alice sank back to the ground, unceremoniously wiping the icing that covered her hands and arms onto her jumper- an old piece of a Gryffindor quidditch uniform, with faded lettering and holes in the hem. Bottom lip quivering, she leaned back against the cabinets, legs splayed on either side of the half-cake carnage that she’d left behind. It hadn’t hit her until just now that she was horribly, terribly, mortifyingly alone.
And she could have sworn that, in the distance,                              she could hear the faint tune of ‘Happy Birthday’.
