Photography by LUNAHZON PHOTOGRAPHY
Ten years ago, when the Minnesota Renaissance Festival fish attraction, identical twins Abby and Bryn Roberts took note. Though the duo didn’t know the first thing about tail making, they both had a creative, entrepreneurial bent. Abby had a background in textiles and Bryn in the fine arts. They were nineteen and had made art together side by side since childhood. So why not? They decided to give it a shot and began experimenting with pouring silicone tails in their garage.
From those makeshift beginnings and after a few relocations, their Finfolk Productions has become a veritable mermaid empire. The moment you walk into their Lincolnton, North Carolina, headquarters—a massive old wooden warehouse that served as a grocery store in the 1930s and later an upholstery fabric mill—you enter a dream factory. Paper stars hang from the ceiling; the walls are covered in ships, manta rays, sea plants, and giant octopi; tails in various stages of creation cover the tables (and sometimes are a part of the tables); and the dress code seems to be mermaid-scale leggings in all shades of blue and purple. It’s awesome and whimsical and magical all at once. But make no mistake: This is a real business.
Back when the twins started out, would-be sea nymphs who wanted to look the part had few choices: They could look expensively fabulous with a custom silicone tail or make do with a cheaper spandex model. The sisters set out to fill the space between those options with fabric tails that were affordable but still gorgeous—and photorealistic. They developed an intricate process: First, they make a silicone tail and lovingly hand-paint it, then photograph it from every angle. After seaming the photos together in Photoshop, they make a full-size print on fabric, which is then cut and sewn in house. Their signature fabric tails retail for about $385, but they’ve recently developed a smaller, more economical “discovery tail” that uses the same silicone-based process and retails for just over $200. And of course, they also still make their custom, hand-sculpted ultra-realistic silicone tails. Whatever the tail, it is made in-house, from start to finish. They also sell the iridescent scales they used on their now-retired Mythic tails, and they encourage their customers to share their creations, which range from jewelry to sparkling mermaid eggs.
The twins have succeeded beyond their wildest fantasies. It’s thanks in part to their efforts that we’ve seen an explosion in the mermaid population. Mermaiding is now possible for people of all financial backgrounds and every walk (or swim) of life—every size and gender identification. This inclusivity was important to Abby and Bryn from the start. Their fabric tails have always run up to size 5X, and the sizing chart notes that 6XL and larger are available upon request. They even consulted members of the size-positive Society of Fat Mermaids and included its feedback in their designs and decision making. And as mermaiding has grown in popularity, they’ve had more male customers. Anyone can get a mermaid tail; anyone can be a mermaid.

It’s Finfolk Productions! They make so many pretty tails I’m excited for the last 3 for the fall to come out soon.
I’m 99% sure there’s no pods in my area either. ( though I go to school in a big city so maybe there?
Many moons ago when I first started uni they had boards online and off to help you connect to people. Maybe try there?
I'm gonna be watching that shop for the lion fish tail. I must have it! Ty for showing me! *gives cookies, boba and pho*

Where to buy a Mermaid Tail 101
Tumblr media
So nobody is asking me where to buy a mermaid tail on here but idgaf and I want to spread this information anyways. I HAVE seen a post going around about how people want to buy a mermaid tail once they’re “really rich” and fortunately, you don’t really need to be!  I’m going to include a variety of different tail makers though so there is a bit of a price range. I’ll start with the most affordable though, so don’t worry!
1.
Tumblr media
https://www.finfunmermaid.com/
Price range: $74.95 - $475.00
This is the best recommendation if this is your first time buying a mermaid tail. Finfun sells a variety of safe, good quality, fabric tails which is excellent for new mermaids who mainly swim in pools. They have sizes for children (although I would not recommend anybody under the age of 7 swim in a tail) and adults, and most of their tails tend to be around $100. They do however have a line of elite mermaid tails with larger vinyl flukes for mermaids that want larger, showier fins, these are the ones that bring the price up to about $400.   Keep in mind however, larger fins do cause drag and are harder to swim in, so they’re not recommended for beginner mermaids. If you’re just getting started, you MUST purchase a monofin ($44-60), but most of finfun’s tail skins are $44.95 - $64.95 depending on design and sizing. All and all, Finfun is great for beginners, they send out safety instruction sheets with their tails, their tails are designed to be easily removed in the water in case of emergency, and are pretty easy to put on and swim in for a beginner. The only drawback is that the monofin is not the strongest and isn’t recommended for swimming in the ocean. 2.
Tumblr media
https://www.themertailor.com/ Price range: $159.99 - $2,000+. So, Mertailor is one of those companies that’s got it all. He’s got kids tails. He’s got the fancier fabric tails. He has beautiful silicone monofins to go with most of his skins that flow and photograph nicely in the water. He also has tail skins for the Mermaid Linden monofin if you can’t shell out a couple hundred for his silicone fins. And last but not least he is a silicone tail maker. (Although at the time of posting this they are not currently taking silicone tail orders.) His most popular tails are the fantasea line, which are scuba-knit skins made to go over his silicone monofins. I have a few of them, and I see several mermaids at every meetup with them. It’s not the most budget friendly line in the world, but you can usually get a monofin + tail for under a thousand dollars. Professional mermaids even use these for gigs these days despite being a fabric tail. His full silicone spellbound tails start at $2,000 for a basic tail, but the price will go up when you add different customization options to them. I do not know the upper limit of any silicone tailmaker’s prices, it’s not something they usually disclose. I’ve seen people use these tails in the ocean though I personally have not done so. I have used them in other natural bodies of water. They aren’t the most powerful tails but they don’t tend to have a lot of drag either.
3.
Tumblr media
https://www.finfolk.com/
Price range: $375.00 (not including monofin) - $5,500+
Finfolk’s tails are unfortunately a little bit more exclusive and hard to get a hold of. But it’s not impossible! I personally have four of their fabric tails. Finfolk is known for their limited one time releases for most of their designs, and will have a few live sales per year, that their podsquad gets first access to. They normally announce their sales a few weeks in advance on their social media, and their tails sell out within a few hours. There is hope, however, if you are in love with their tails. Starting in 2021, Finfolk has been selling a “Tail of the Month” in which they let one fabric tail design sell for a full month before it gets taken back down. This gives would-be Finfolk mermaids time to save while they wait for a design they like to be posted. Their fabric tails are made of scuba-knit, and the flukes have vinyl inserts that help them keep their shape. They are compatible with the Finis Shooter and the Mermaid Linden monofin. They are also compatible with the Finis Foil, although finfolk recommends using the foil for dry events only. Finfolk is also known for their now defunct mythic tails, which had silicone flukes and were covered in resin scales. You may see mermaids with them if you join the mermaid community, but it is not likely they will be returning again. Their silicone tails are stunning and start at $5500, but I have not seen them open for silicone orders for over a year. 4.

https://www.magictail.net/
Uuuuhhh... *Checks notes* Okay, I’m going to be honest, I do not recall seeing any of these out in the wild. Mermaid Magictail is a German based tailmaker and their prices are all in euros. My best guess with the current exchange rate is $155.88 - $518.70, based on the most and least expensive tails I could find on the site. Their standard tails are compatible with the finfun monofin, but MagicTail has their own brand of monofin as well. I’m not familiar with it and have not had a chance to use it, so I’m not sure how well it performs. Their premium tails are compatible with the Mahina monofin, which I have heard good things about and I know mermaids are always on the lookout for fabric tails that are compatible with it. That said, I have not heard any discussion of this company that wasn’t online. The best feedback I can leave in good faith is Nerdmaid Faith’s review of her tails from this company. 5.
Tumblr media
(Funfact, I know this mermaid.) http://www.themernation.com/ Price range: $1550.00 - $3250+ I don’t have a lot to say about Mernation. They are a silicone tailmaker that are known for their quick turnaround time and great customer service. I have not heard any complaints from anybody who owns one of their tails.
Their tails use a Finis Shooter monofin. I have this monofin and I personally cannot use it without taping up my feet with waterproof medical tape, or else it shreds the skin off of my toes. However, other mermaids love this monofin. 6.
Tumblr media
https://www.jurassicmerman.com/ Price range: $1600-$1900+ A’ight, I’m gonna try not to be bias here since this one is run by a buddy of mine. This is a newer tailmaker, who from what I gather got into tail making because he wanted silicone tail options that were as close to the tails from Disney’s the Little Mermaid as possible. And he has a point, I haven’t even seen the Disney parks make an Ariel tail this accurate.
That’s not to say that he doesn’t have other styles going on either. Not to mention his business is new and he’s still making new sculpts and designs. He offers the Finis Foil or the Finis Shooter as the monofin for his tails.
“But what about Mermaid Amathea and Merbella?” As of posting, Mermaid Amathea’s website has little information about her tails as she’s closed for orders. I haven’t seen Merbella take a tail order in years, instead, only opting to occasionally sell a premade tail on their facebook. I’m not sure if they’ll ever take new tail orders again.
⚠️ COMPANIES TO AVOID ⚠️
-Fairytails Bangkok Known for using unsafe, toxic materials in making their tails. -Shello Mermaid Formerly known as Swimtails, this company has taken money for unfulfilled orders, and abandoned their previous trademarks to start new companies without giving their prior customers refunds. -Aquamermaid Nothing from aquamermaid is made by aquamermaid. They have no quality control, and often outsource and undercut third party performers and manufacturers. They produce absolutely nothing, but are happy to take your money. DO NOT ACCEPT PROFESSIONAL MERMAID GIGS FROM THIS COMPANY. -Amazon and Walmart A cesspool of stolen designs and artwork and no safety testing. We have yet to have a drowning in the mermaid community, but sadly the first will likely involve one of these tails.
Anyways, those are some of the tailmakers I know about that are still reliably taking orders. Mermaiding is a hobby with a pretty big range in budgets. It’s not one that I can personally recommend for small children, and if you’re a minor I wouldn’t recommend a silicone tail. You’re just gonna grow out of it.

Alrighty, I've been slacking on my #MerMay posting, hope everyone's ready for a sudden stream! I’ve got my queue filled to the brim but I’ll also be adding my personal stuff too!
MerMay, to my understanding, started as an art prompt month very similar to Inktober—a way for artists to challenge themselves and stay inspired! The mermaiding community has since decided to participate in MerMay as well: for mermaids who aren't joining as artists, MerMay is a time to support artists, and help increase visibility for artists who make mermaid art! And so many of us commission art during this time, myself included. And some of us are lucky enough to be an artist's MerMay inspiration and receive art!
I really love this photo, it's one of my favourites for its dreamlike quality. It's actually a screengrab of a video! You can watch the original video on my YouTube channel, which is linked in my bio. I'm posting it even though it's not art itself because it is a prelude to tomorrow's artwork ;)
