please don't mistake silence for hatred. please don't mistake unanswered plotting messages as indifference, or a lack of enthusiasm towards you. considering the ages of most roleplayers, many of us have bills to pay, families to take care of, medical conditions to treat, appointments to make, classes to take, homes to clean, and lives to live away from the computer that are far, far more important than writing on tumblr — life has a tendency to get in the way of hobbies and fun things like this. be patient with your fellow writers. if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. of course you can set your boundaries, keep your space comfortable, and softblock whoever you wish, but do so while recognizing it's probably not hatred or apathy that keeps them from leaping into your dms with message after message. they probably love this hobby just as much as you... but sometimes life gets in the way.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Economy
The COVID-19 pandemic has had far reaching economic consequences. The recession caused by the pandemic was the second largest in global history. During the recession, business in the services sector decreased and impacted the world economy in a variety of ways.
Inflation uncertainty will stabilize asset markets
The inflationary craze of the past decade may have peaked but it hasn't deflated. Inflation is a big problem for business and consumers. For the Federal Reserve, it is a double-edged sword.
It is also the reason for many of the recent market tremors. As a result, central banks have had to rethink their monetary policies. One of the most important lessons is that they must slow their rate hikes. They must do so in the context of a tepid economy. This is a tricky task.
One of the ways in which they are doing so is by providing an extra dose of liquidity. By intervening in key financial markets, the Fed hopes to reassure investors and regulators that it is on the ball. And it's not just the Fed.
In the interest of transparency, the Bank of Canada is also getting in on the act. It has added new tools to its monetary policy toolkit. Aside from its more traditional tools, the bank also has a more sophisticated inflation-monitor.
In-commuters from the suburbs tend to have higher wages than out-commuters
A significant portion of residents in the Richmond area commute out of the city. The study found that 63 percent of people in the Richmond metro area commute outside of the city. This demonstrates the importance of transportation.
While many factors determine where people choose to live, a major factor is how much money they can afford. A higher level of housing affordability can lead to shorter commutes for lower-wage workers. In contrast, higher-wage workers tend to have longer commutes.
Research has shown that lower-income households are concentrated in central cities. These neighborhoods are generally transit rich and have easy access to jobs. Gentrification in rail station areas could inhibit the ability of lower-wage workers to relocate to these areas.
In the Los Angeles metro area, the number of low-wage workers with access to jobs within a typical commute distance has been declining. Studies have suggested that suburbanization of jobs has contributed to this decline. However, the extent of this effect has not been studied.
Disparate effects on Black communities
In the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, Black communities are facing outsized challenges. As the number of Black Americans affected by the epidemic continues to rise, Black leaders are pushing to make their communities aware of the pandemic and its impact on their communities.
The effects of the pandemic are far-reaching and rooted in longstanding injustices. Historically, Black families have been exposed to low wages and higher unemployment rates. These conditions leave them less prepared to deal with economic shocks. A growing body of evidence suggests that society does not adequately protect Black people.
The current public health crisis has created a series of unexpected expenses, including increased medication and treatment costs. This is creating substantial economic hardship for many Americans. It has also decreased revenue and put a strain on firms. If the situation continues, this could jeopardize the stability of firms and their employees.
The economic vulnerability of Black households is exacerbated by the wage gap between Black and White workers. Currently, Black workers earn 73 cents for every white dollar. However, this gap is smallest at the bottom of the wage distribution.

Health of Aboriginal Women in Canada
INTRODUCTION
The circumstances in which people are born, grow, live, work and age are responsible for most of the health inequities that have persisted and widened within and between countries. These circumstances are commonly referred to as determinants of health. While a number of agencies and organizations have identified different determinants as contributing to ill health and inequities, they typically include: early child development, education, income, employment and the nature of employment, social and physical environments, personal health practices and coping skills, access to health services, racism, and gender.
Aboriginal women’s health
The wellbeing and prosperity of Aboriginal women is influenced by a complex scope of way of life and environmental factors. All Holistic methodologies, including most profound sense of being, associations with family, group and nation, and the sharing of Indigenous women' learning, aptitudes and links plays an essential part in addressing the health burdens experienced by numerous Indigenous women. Aboriginal people have endured great inter-generational trauma as a result of colonization, forced expulsion of children, digestion, isolation and racism. Social practices, customs and characters have been interfered with which has devastatingly affected the health of Aboriginal peoples. Aboriginal people also encounter significant socio-economic disadvantage, which is strongly identified with poor health results.
In Canada, Aboriginal children keep on representing an alarmingly high rate of the kids in government care (Farris-Manning and Zandstra 2003, Trocm’e et al. 2004, Browne et al. 2009a). Insights from 2000–2002 evaluated that 76,000 Canadian children were living in government care (Trocm’e et al. 2004); 30–40% were of Aboriginal ethnicity (Farris-Manning and Zandstra 2003). In British Columbia, Aboriginal children involve 54% of children in government care, in spite of representing approximately 8% of kids in the area (British Columbia Provincial Health Officer 2009). The life expectancy for Aboriginal women is 73.7 compared to 83.1 for non-Aboriginal women. Aboriginal women are more likely to have one or more chronic health conditions compared to Aboriginal men.6 and are 34 times more likely to be hospitalized due to family violence. Though they make up 0.9% of the Victorian population, Aboriginal women are the fastest growing segment of the Victorian prison population, representing 8.9% of Victorian female prisoners. Most Aboriginal women in prison have experienced family violence and many are incarcerated for offences relating to homelessness and financial hardship. There is a need for more Aboriginal women-focused research as much of the research on Aboriginal health is gender blind and does not explore the impact of gender on the health and well-being outcomes of Aboriginal women in addition to the trauma of colonization, forced removal, racism and socio-economic disadvantage. Aboriginal women experience poorer health than other women. Numerous Indigenous women endure medical issues because of context of their lives, with huge effects being identified with dispossession, forced expulsions from family, racism, marginalization and exposure to violence.
Aboriginal women share a significant number of an indistinguishable difficulties and concerns from other women in Canada. Be that as it may, demographically, socially and financially, Aboriginal women are also a remarkable populace. There is also much assorted qualities inside the Aboriginal populace. Comprehensively, Aboriginal people can be considered as three particular groups: First Nations (North American Indian), Métis and Inuit. Inside each of these groups are numerous unmistakable social gatherings. Women have many duties as moms, grandmas, sisters, daughters, spouses and partners, and most generally it is the women in families who have the fundamental obligation regarding taking care of the health of other family members. There is the potential for significant health gains for Indigenous women through enhanced aversion, early detection and treatment to address the more elevated amounts of risk components and the burden of illness with prior onset and lower survival rates. To guarantee better health results, procedures need to include knowledge and familiarity with the history, experience, culture and privileges of Indigenous women.
Context of Aboriginal Women health
The health drawbacks experienced by Indigenous people can be considered in origin, yet perpetuation of the disadvantages owes much to contemporary basic and social factors, embodied in what have been named the 'social determinants' of health. In expansive terms, economic opportunities, physical framework, and social conditions impact the health of people, groups, and societies in general. These elements are particularly manifest in measures, for example, education, work, salary, housing, access to services, interpersonal organizations, association with land, racism, and detainment. On every one of these measures, Indigenous people endure considerable disadvantage. The traditional Indigenous perspective of health is holistic. It encompasses everything important in a person’s life, including land, environment, physical body, community, relationships, and law. Health is the social, emotional, and cultural wellbeing of the whole community and the concept is therefore linked to the sense of being Indigenous. These two approaches need to be combined in a culturally sensitive manner to deal adequately with Indigenous female health issues in both the immediate and long term.
The Attack on Aboriginal Culture
Women were never considered inferior in Aboriginal society until Europeans arrived. Women had few rights in European culture at the time of first contact with Aboriginal people. Men were viewed as their social, legitimate and political masters. Any rights which women had were those inferred through their spouses. The law of England, for instance, held that women did not have the privilege to vote, to possess property or to enter into contracts. This disposition was eventually reflected in the Indian Act, which conspicuously oppressed women. This attitude toward women proceeded until generally as of late in Canada. Women needed to battle fights in this century to win the privilege to vote and to be perceived as lawful people, and it was just inside the previous couple of decades that the last legitimate confinements upon their entitlement to contract and claim property were lifted. The imposition of new values and cultural standards brought about tremendous historical, social and economic changes which, for the most part, were destructive to Aboriginal communities. Dr. Sally Long staff of the Child Protection Centre has written:
The razing of Indian societies and their traditions is well-documented. Symptoms of this dislocation are evident in high rates of unemployment, suicide, alcoholism, domestic violence, and other social problems. This loss of tradition has seriously damaged the oral means of preserving cultural norms, and the values which prohibit deviant behaviors have been obscured and often forgotten. Native peoples often appear reluctant to adopt “white” solutions to problems that stem from the latter’s apparent destruction of their societies.
These progressions to Aboriginal way of life mutilated the traditional Aboriginal male and female roles. With the loss of Indian male roles and thus of being diminished to a condition of powerlessness and vulnerability which their own particular culture considered exceptionally inappropriate. Indian men came to encounter serious role strain. Social changes resulting from the economic factors at play had their most prominent effect on the part of Aboriginal women.
The health and wellbeing of Aboriginal women
The health and wellbeing of Aboriginal women is influenced by a complex scope of financial and natural factors. Indigenous women are more likely than non-Indigenous women to be unemployed, to have profession obligations regarding kids other than their own, to get welfare payments and to have finished school at a earlier age (Aboriginal Social Justice Commissioner, 2004). Indigenous women are additionally more inclined to be a casualty of violence and to live in communities where brutality is predominant. All things considered, four in ten Indigenous women reported their health as magnificent or great in 2004-05. Holistic health approaches, including those that encompasses spirituality and associations with family, community and country, and the sharing of Indigenous women knowledge, aptitudes and networks have been recognized as essential parts in addressing to the health disadvantages experienced by numerous Indigenous women (Thomson, 2006)
Data Sources
Information for this study is drawn from a range of ABS data sources including the 2004-05 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS), the 2004-05 National Health Survey (NHS), the 2002 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey (NATSISS) and the 2002 General Social Survey (GSS).
Healing
In the political arena, Aboriginal women may be underrepresented, but many are leading the way in the area of healing the wounds of colonization. In small, informal circles and large healing conferences attended by thousands, women are grappling with the issues of residential schools, missing and murdered women, abuse and violence, and drug, alcohol and other addictions
Health Status
In 2004-05, 39% of Aboriginal women aged 18 years and over reported their health as excellent or very good and 26% reported their health as fair or poor. This compared with 41% and 21% respectively for Indigenous men.
Women who reported their health as excellent or very good health were more likely than those who reported fair/poor health to be employed (52% compared with 33%), to have completed school to Year 12 (30% compared with 17%) and to have access to higher household incomes (31% compared with 17%).
Rates of fair/poor health increased steadily with age, ranging from 15% of Indigenous women aged 18-24 years to 46% of women aged 55 years and over.
After adjusting for the differences in age structure between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations, Indigenous women were twice as likely as non-Indigenous women to report fair/poor health.
Social and Emotional Wellbeing
In 2004-05, 70% of Indigenous women aged 18 years and over reported feeling happy and around half (51%) reported feeling full of life all/most of the time in the four weeks prior to interview.
Women who reported feeling happy all/most of the time were more likely than those who reported feeling happy a little/none of the time to be employed (47% compared with 35%), to report excellent/very good health (45% compared with 20%) and to have access to higher household incomes (27% compared with 16%).
Two-thirds (66%) of Indigenous women reported low/moderate levels of psychological distress and 32% reported high/very high levels of psychological distress in the four weeks prior to interview.
Indigenous women were more likely than Indigenous men to report high/very high levels of psychological distress (32% compared with 21%). Rates were similar for women living in both non-remote and remote areas (32% compared with 33%).
Indigenous women with a long-term health condition were more likely to report high/very high levels of psychological distress than women with no long-term health condition (34% compared with 21%).
High/very high levels of psychological distress were particularly common among women with cancer (54%), back pain/problems (45%), kidney disease (44%) and arthritis (44%).
Women with high/very high levels of psychological distress were more likely than women with low/moderate levels of distress to have consulted a doctor (35% compared with 25%) or other health professional (30% compared with 22%) in the two weeks prior to interview.
After adjusting for age differences between the two populations, Indigenous women were twice as likely as non-Indigenous women to report high/very high levels of psychological distress.
CONCLUSION
Community members, pioneers, and health care workers should all be included in efforts to expand the adequacy of cervical screening programs among Aboriginal women. Midwives are ideally situated inside numerous communities to give sensitive regenerative medicinal services. Midwives need to instruct themselves concerning the most ideal care, including a appreciations for the historical background advising the present day financial conditions. This requires Midwives perceive and react to key ranges of morbidity, free from generalizations. The support and genuine participation of Aboriginal people communities ought to be looked for and instructive effort should be taken to enhance the uptake of services. Thought should be given to the caring environment and additionally the structure of care with a specific end goal to energize continued access. There are numerous chances to consolidate traditional Native communication and healing strategies in a reproductive midwifery health service that is genuinely responsive and sensitive to the requirements of Aboriginal women, their families and communities.

The Troubling Rise In Domestic Abuse Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic
By Evan Addison, University of Pittsburgh Class of 2022
June 15, 2020
Tumblr media
Since the Pennsylvania stay at home order was put into effect on April 1st, reports of domestic violence have risen steadily. Even as the state begins to re-open this increase in domestic violence continues. In Montgomery County, a suburb of Philadelphia, domestic violence cases saw an 8-9 percent increase in April. The combination of economic uncertainty and inability to leave the house has left victims of abuse in an increasingly more vulnerable position. Courts, law enforcement, social workers have had to find creative ways to reach victims and continue to ensure that those committing these crimes are prosecuted and victims can be safe. Adapting to the changing environment is crucial for those responding to these crimes because the pandemic has thrust many people into more dangerous and unhealthy situations at home.
According to the National Justice Institute, there is a distinct correlation between financial hardship and increased domestic violence. With levels of unemployment rapidly increasing, more and more people are being forced into economically precarious positions, leaving victims of abuse at an increased risk. According to the latest Employment Situation Summary released by the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, “Total nonfarm payroll employment fell by 20.5 million in April, and the unemployment rate rose to 14.7 percent”[5]. The National Justice Institute found that “When men experienced one period of unemployment the rate rose to 7.5 percent and when men experienced two or more periods of unemployment the rate of intimate partner violence rose to 12.3 percent.”[3].
Employment isn’t the only factor that has an impact on levels of domestic violence, location, and socioeconomic status are also strong predictors. Studies have shown that “the rate of intimate partner violence in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods is 8.7 percent compared with 4.3 percent in more economically advantaged neighborhoods.”[3]. With the pandemic disproportionately affecting disadvantaged neighborhoods, this puts even more strain on those suffering from abuse in these areas. A recent study in New York City, the epicenter of the pandemic, found that “The ZIP codes in the bottom 25% of average incomes represent 36% of all cases of the disease, while the wealthiest 25% account for under 10%.”[7].
The health effects of the virus are also being felt harder in these disadvantaged areas. A study revealed that “Covid-19 can be about twice as deadly for those along their society’s lower rungs”[6]. With the consequences of exposure higher in these neighborhoods, it makes reporting the abuse even harder. Victims are scared that by moving or leaving the house they will contract the disease, leaving them trapped.
Law enforcement and courts are having to find creative ways to hear cases from those who are suffering from abuse but are concerned that reporting it will risk them contracting COVID-19. One method being implemented is meeting in parking lots, this allows people to meet in person while still abiding by social distancing and remaining in the safety of their cars. Hotlines are another way victims can report abuse. Although the inability to leave the house makes some victims fearful that their partner may overhear them.
The pandemic is exacerbating an already existing problem: the drastic underreporting of abuse. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “even during normal times, only about half of victims of violent domestic crimes call the police when they are assaulted by a family member”[4]. Several aspects of the pandemic make these problems even worse. One is that some victims are saying that they don’t want to report the abuse because doing so would send the abuser to jail, where the disease is spreading rapidly. Another being that batters are being released faster because jails are trying to stop the rapid spread of the virus. Especially in a time where it is hard to move and make plans, the early release of these abusers leaves victims stuck in dangerous positions.
The ability of law enforcement and social workers to keep up with the evolving public health response will be crucial to ensuring that victims of abuse can get the justice they deserve. Many victims are either unaware the Courts are still operating or don’t know how to reach out in a way that keeps them safe from both COVID-19 and their abuser. Hotlines around the state needs to make sure that the people in their area know that just because many places are shut down right now, they are still there and will take legal action against abusers.

Coronavirus acts like a 'Excavator' in the music business|Techno Setting
Tumblr media
Coronavirus acts like a 'Excavator' in the popular music industry
A number of full weeks ago my journeying for job between Leipzig and also Berlin ceased as a result of this coronavirus outbreak. I have actually given that then understood I have actually been actually totally eaten through work the final although and haven't been taking note of worldly affairs. I totally overlooked acting on the information coverage on covid19. Like the rest of us, I have never ever seen this kind of scenario where a global virus burst out so quickly around the globe.
Purportedly the constantly harmful and also aged that are actually thought about the absolute most at risk in our society currently over time are actually the absolute most in jeopardy, however there have been actually bunches of newspaper article from all over the world about folks under the age of fifty that are actually being actually laid up in Intensive Treatment.
Along with what believes that a comprehensive lockdown in result throughout the globe, to sway this infection which our company at this minute don't understand just how much it will definitely take our company in Corona's cooling rollercoaster. A considerable amount of individuals from throughout the world are really straining, the music business is actually enduring financially now over time, from group managers, PR organizations as well as the DJs. While all of us are being actually informed that social distancing is actually a must, purportedly any type of social get in touch with may create the matters worse.
Must our team comply with the policies of each of our federal governments and remain at our homes or should we say fuck the globe and be defiant and also keep going crazy whatever?
To become truthful, I am actually still quite a lot in shock about just how the world has totally shutdown but also for fundamental essential needs. Every little thing appears inverted, it is actually a little creepy, it seems that one thing thus little such as a microorganism can essentially handle traveling, globe markets, as well as authorities, an infection that's still in its own infancy participating in mayhem outside and in. Last night I went purchasing for groceries and also any of the grocery stores I went to all had operated out of fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, eggs, bread, spaghetti all the everyday based was actually fully gone.
Let's continue track and also discuss the songs industry, where nightclubs like the epic Berghain and Berlin's finest Tresor among various other clubs almost everywhere are defending their presence. DJs are immediately certainly not being actually scheduled or every one of their approaching jobs for the following pair of months being terminated and God knows for how much time. The cycle of the songs field is actually being damaged presently. This is actually why I had an interest in exactly how DJs coming from various spots around the entire world & & exactly how it's impacted them as well as just how they are actually coping with it today.
We asked numerous individuals coming from the songs industry; How possesses the 'LOCKDOWN' condition impacted you individually as well as how are your household taking care of the disruption as well as perhaps very most importantly, just how is it impacting you fiscally?
DAVE CLARKE
"The important things concerning this lockdown is actually just how you discover exactly how it is actually affecting each and every individual, the anxiety, the worry of does a sneezing indicate merely a cold or "The Infection"? It is more vital than ever to connect and also mention hi digitally to every person you care approximately, to pay attention, to learn (I was actually talking with a friend in China to attempt and learn ideas for instance) to sustain, to acquire help, to try as well as be actually amusing and have submissiveness. Easy things like losing the drone of the urban area seems for me has actually been actually quite disturbing, you really feel alone, the managing your food items source like a stockroom for efficiency (which tbh need to possess consistently held true, yet an unacceptable apple believes that a crime currently) understanding individuals may certainly not pay for food items, the stress they possess.
The loss of all the liberties we considered given, in retrospection the pointless stupidity of business community. Walking the roads to acquire food experiences like Sundays made use of to be actually, every little thing now is actually full-on sell sell, probably closing the outlets down for a time a week will definitely help the mind, the loved ones, the private inhale far better. Oh, and the social networking sites birthed DJ's, possibly a lot better for me not to claim just about anything regarding that shitshow of arrogance. Allow's survive this find out, grieve, be actually better individuals, oh and really love even more honestly."
SANTONIO ECHOLS
"For me, It is actually beginning to get actual for our team in Michigan. My partner as well as I chose to stockpile on some things 3 weeks ago for the residence (food-wise) merely in the event that. I personally assume it is going to get a lot worse just before it gets better. After chatting with my booking organization My jobs were actually terminated or on grip for the month of May. Monetarily it is actually not affecting our team my better half is actually working from house and we possess a couple of dollars do away with for a stormy time. Companies are actually hurting a little, I'm hoping that this will definitely be actually short phrase. Effective my moms and dads and my spouse's parents to remain within was the tough part. Finding exactly how it is actually influencing seniors differently ... Let's keep prayerful!"
ORLANDO VOORN
"Most of us recognize that Coronavirus is actually a major concern for any individual around immediately, but as for feeling the economic grief on my edge and likely for a lot of underground songs producers, this performs not modify a lot given that our company have been paralyzed through this new system of greed as well as no drug age. Many of us discovered currently other means to keep afloat. I make popular music for over three decades and also ain't going no place.
I wish all my actual popular music manufacturers and also lovers to keep tough and strive and smart to maintain doing you for US. Nevertheless, the "elite" Non-producer DJ along with a million fans are currently weakened through this virus and can not go fist-pumping or even whatever else unawareness they may consider to supply the audience. Can not create that 50k a program anymore, I would certainly must claim along with satisfaction in my vocal. Fate involved you incognito as well as her name is Circle. Feel free to do not be sobbing online over how poor you possess it and also begging for donations given that you can not hand push any sort of longer. Because of the brand-new corrupt unit of Fans the whole scene how it got created has actually obtained raped from its own source by the greed of the corporates alleged advocates of the Techno as well as residence scene but definitely are out commercial just. Do not care about the top quality of the popular music. Those events that do treatment are actually rare. Below ground for life little one our experts such as roaches, certainly never dying always living As well as along with that being pointed out Let's return to the course!"
STATIC OBSTRUCTION
"This coronavirus pandemic carries 2 major risks to individual suffering, a wellness danger which is without a doubt the best essential but stone's throw behind is the financial risk. This 2nd one can easily trigger human suffering on a much bigger scale, unemployment, bankruptcy, making fear. Its own a cause and effect and a symptom of the capitalist device that is actually dated and also extreme. Our financial system might be established up in a manner elevating everyone from hardship, certainly not only the abundant, but also for the absolute most part, it loads scientific research as well as advancement. In my viewpoint, our federal governments need to have to carry out a global simple earnings for all, so people do not suffer needlessly, our company do not need additional mayhem bordering this problems, we require actual management and a planning of action to reduce the quantity of interruption presently happening.
All artists/DJs/graphic designers/promoters are influenced through this current state of affairs. Over the final 10 years, our team have actually viewed the amount of amount of money our company bring in coming from generating music decrease due to the onset of streaming web sites. In 2015 was awful in mind available because I started releasing popular music in 2005 and also but my songs was actually streamed over 500,000 opportunities on a variety of different internet sites. Along with most countries entering into lockdown, I am now not needed to create leaflets or banners as all events have been called off. I'm additionally certainly not able to DJ anywhere, each of this will possess a knock-on impact of eating into our financial savings. Currently, I don't understand anyone with the virus, each of my friends and family are actually taking safety measures along with social distancing, but it's having an extensive impact on every person. Coming from my viewpoint, It presents exactly how delicate our society is actually and also partly how unproductive a considerable amount of our work are actually."

Financial Strains Significantly Raise Risk of Suicide Attempts
Financial strains such as high debt, low income and unemployment are associated with suicide attempts and should be considered key factors when assessing mental health interventions, a new study from Duke Health researchers shows.
While the study was undertaken before the COVID-19 pandemic, the findings are especially relevant within the context of the economic downturn triggered by the spread of the virus.
“Our research shows that financial stressors play a major role in suicides, and this needs to be recognized and appreciated in light of the unprecedented financial instability triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Eric Elbogen, Ph.D., a professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke, and lead author of a study publishing online Sept. 3 in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
“We could well be seeing a dramatic increase in suicide rates moving forward,” Elbogen said.
Elbogen and colleagues noted that financial problems have long been considered a risk factor for suicide, but often as a contributing factor amid other mental health issues, such as substance abuse and depression, and not as a driving force. Additionally, suicide rates have risen in recent years regardless of economic conditions, although they are higher during downturns.
To determine whether financial strain was a singular, primary factor leading to suicidal thoughts and self-harm, Elbogen and colleagues used nationally representative data of U.S. adults interviewed from 2001-02, followed by a second interview of the same respondents in 2004-05.
They found cumulative financial strain predicted suicide attempts that occurred between the two study periods. Financial debt/crisis, unemployment, past homelessness and lower income were each associated with subsequent suicide attempts.
Study respondents who experienced those four financial strains had 20 times higher predicted probability of attempting suicide compared to respondents who experienced none of the financial problems. The results were similar for people having suicidal thoughts.
“Our study, while assessing this connection using pre-COVID data, shows a direct risk that should raise alarm as millions of people experience economic hardship resulting from the pandemic,” Elbogen said. He pointed to recent U.S. Census Bureau data showing that half of Americans have experienced loss in employment income and over a quarter of Americans are now experiencing housing insecurity as a result of the pandemic.
“Although the ultimate health impact of COVID-19 is still unknown, it is all but certain that the longer infections spread, there will likely be more people who will experience significant financial strain resulting from work stoppages and disruption,” Elbogen said.
In addition to Elbogen, study authors include Megan Lanier, Ann Elizabeth Montgomery, Susan Strickland, H. Ryan Wagner and Jack Tsai. Elbogen, Montgomery, and Tsai are affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs, National Center on Homelessness among Veterans and Strickland is affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.

How to Reduce or Delay Paying Your Bills During the COVID-19 Crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc on the finances of many people. Over 22 million workers have become unemployed in a short period of time. Unemployment benefits are available for laid off workers, freelancers, independent contractors, and gig workers, but the availability of some of those benefits has been delayed due to the crush of applications and the need for unemployment offices to create and install new payment systems.
In the meantime, bills are piling up for financially strapped individuals. Many creditors are willing to help you through this difficult time. But the key is to reach out to the creditors before you fall into default, explain your situation, and ask for hardship assistance.
Creditors are receptive now to granting financial help, as they are under tremendous regulatory, governmental, and PR pressures to help affected individuals. And the recent CARES Act enacted by the federal government on March 17, 2020, provides various protections and benefits for individuals and small businesses.
It’s best to request accommodation before you fall behind in your payments. Otherwise, this could ultimately hurt you credit score.
The accommodations typically fall into deferred payments and waived payments. Deferred payments mean that you don’t have to make the payment now, but that you will have to do so at some later agreed upon date. A waived payment means that you don’t have to repay it.
The following provides some advice on how to reduce or delay paying your crucial bills.
Rent
Rent is one of the biggest expenses for individuals.
In many states now, including California and New York, landlords are prohibited for some period of time from performing evictions on renters who can’t pay their rent because of the pandemic.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development has also stopped eviction proceedings of tenants who occupy properties it owns.
With so many renters feeling the economic strain, a number of landlords have been willing to consider the following accommodations:
Temporary rent relief for 1 to 3 months
Acceptance of partial payment for overdue rent
Lowering of the amount of rent moving forward
Allowing use of the tenant’s security deposit toward rent
Landlords do not want to be looking for replacement tenants in this environment, so they may be willing to make some accommodations.
A phone call or email to your landlord explaining your situation is the best first step. Here is a sample email that you can send to your landlord, which you can tailor to your individual situation:
Dear ______:
As you know, I am a tenant at your property at [Address, City], Apt #___. I am writing this email to let you know that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am suffering financial hardship. [I have been laid off from my job.] [My freelance work has been severely affected by the pandemic.] [I have had to file for unemployment benefits, but due to the crush of applications to the unemployment office, my payments have been delayed.]
I have been a good and responsible tenant in the past, and I want to continue being a good tenant, but I am respectfully requesting the following financial accommodation from you to help me get through this difficult time:
Waiver of the next two (2) months of rent while my finances improve
Lowering of my rent thereafter going forward to $___ a month
If you would be kind enough to grant me these accommodations, that would be a great step forward for me personally to resolve my financial problems. I would be very grateful for this assistance.
Thank you. I hope you and your family are staying healthy.
Sincerely,
[Name]
Credit Cards
Most credit card issuers, including Bank of America, Capital One, and Wells Fargo, are granting one or more of the following concessions to cardholders who are suffering financially from the pandemic:
Deferring required payments for a month or more
Waiving late fees
Waiving interest or lowering the interest rate
Implementing an extended payment plan
Increasing credit limits
The first step is to contact the credit card issuer. Their phone number is on the back of your credit card. It may difficult to get through, as many cardholders are calling them. Check their website for ways to notify them through email or through an online submission form.
To avoid an accommodation hurting your credit score, ask that your payments be marked “current” on your credit file rather than “delinquent.”
If you can’t quickly get an accommodation, try to at least make the minimum payment set forth on your statement to avoid a hit to your credit score.
Mortgages
The CARES Act provides for a 60- or 180-day moratorium on payments due on federally backed mortgages (such as from Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac).
In California, some 200 banks have offered a 90-day deferral on mortgage payments. Lenders in other states may follow the California example.
The key again is to contact your lender as soon as possible and see what accommodations are available.
Gas and Electric Bills
Many utilities are granting accommodations to people who can’t pay their gas or electric bill right now. A number of utilities are suspending shutoffs for non-payment. Some states have implemented prohibitions on shutoffs for 90 days.
It’s best to reach out to your utility to explore what options may be available to you. At the very least, utilities should be willing to enter into an extended payment plan.
Phone and Internet Service Bills
Many phone and Internet service providers are willing to grant some concessions. Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast are each waiving some fees, promising not to cut off service for some time, and/or providing cheaper service alternatives.
Many of these companies don’t want to lose customers during the pandemic, so you may be able to negotiate a 50% or more savings on your phone and Internet service bills.
Car Payments
Ford and other automakers are allowing some customers to defer payments on their existing car loans. Some car companies are also offering new car buyers the option to delay their first payment on their car loan by 90 days.
Bank lenders, such as Bank of America, are offering 90 to 120 days of deferrals on auto loans. But this doesn’t happen automatically—you typically need to apply on the bank’s website for the deferral. Deferral payments will most often be added to the loan principal and payable at the end of the term of the loan.
Reach out to your auto loan service provider to see if they will defer or reduce some of your payments.
Taxes
Under the CARES Act, all individuals can now defer paying any federal income tax that was previously due on April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020, without incurring any penalties or interest.
To get the $1,200 stimulus payment from the government, most individual must have filed their 2018 or 2019 tax return with the IRS. See the comprehensive discussion of the stimulus payment at IRS Announces Launch of Online Tool to Tract the Status of Your Stimulus Payment and to Have It Direct Deposited
If you are filing your 2019 tax return with the IRS before July 15, 2020, you don’t have to pay any taxes owed until July 15, 2020. If you need more time beyond July 15, 2020, to file your tax return, you can request an extension by filing IRS Form 4868.
The CARES Act granted the extension for federal tax filings and payments, but it is expected that many states will also provide for that extension for state tax requirements.
Student Loans
The CARES Act gives some relief to borrowers under certain student loans. For designated federal student loans, you don’t have to make any principal payment until September 30, 2020 (although this is a deferral, and thus the principal payment will have to be made at some point). Interest is waived entirely until September 30, 2020, and does not need to be repaid for those federal student loans.
Since only certain student loans are covered by the above, you should contact your loan servicer and ask what accommodations are available. You should also check the Federal Student Aid website at www.studentaid.gov.
The studentaid.gov site provides this additional guidance:
“If you’re in a short-term financial bind, you may qualify for a deferment or forbearance. With either of these options, you can temporarily suspend your payments….
Because of the impact on interest and potential loan forgiveness, it might be worth exploring another repayment plan before you consider deferment or forbearance. For example, your payments could be more affordable if you change to an income-driven repayment plan.
Contact your loan servicer to find out if another repayment plan might be the best option for you.”
But be sure to consider that any deferred interest obtained could be added to the principal of your loan (causing more interest to accrue over time) unless the lender waives the interest entirely and permanently. Certain lenders are required to permanently waive the interest as described above and other lenders may be willing to follow suit.
Other Bills
Now is the time to reassess what services you are paying for and budget for the new financial reality. Consider the following:
Can you cut the cord on your TV services?
Do you really need a landline phone?
Do you really need multiple music streaming services?
Can you cut down on takeout food?
Are there cheaper alternatives for some of the services you are paying for?
Are your service providers willing to renegotiate payment amounts?
Is it time to quit smoking cigarettes given how expensive they are?
You should especially review any automatic payments that are made from your checking account.
Conclusion
Cash is king right now, so do what you can to conserve cash for essentials like groceries, medicine, and phone bills. Try to build up an emergency fund. Prioritize your payments and get deferrals and waivers from creditors as suggested in this article.

Donald Trump signs $2.2T stimulus after swift congressional votes

Donald Trump signs $2.2T stimulus after swift congressional votes
President Donald Trump signed an unprecedented $2.2 trillion economic rescue package into law Friday, after swift and near-unanimous action by Congress to support businesses, rush resources to overburdened health care providers and help struggling families during the deepening coronavirus epidemic.
Acting with unity and resolve unseen since the 9/11 attacks, Washington moved urgently to stem an economic free fall caused by widespread restrictions meant to slow the spread of the virus that have shuttered schools, closed businesses and brought American life in many places to a virtual standstill.
“This will deliver urgently needed relief,” Trump said as he signed the bill in the Oval Office, flanked only by Republican lawmakers. He thanked members of both parties for putting Americans “first.”
Earlier Friday, the House gave near-unanimous approval by voice vote after an impassioned session conducted along the social distancing guidelines imposed by the crisis. Many lawmakers sped to Washington to participate – their numbers swollen after a maverick Republican signaled he’d try to force a roll call vote – though dozens of others remained safely in their home districts.
The Senate passed the bill unanimously late Wednesday, 96-0.
“Today we’ve all acknowledged our nation faces an economic and health emergency of historic proportions,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. She said Americans deserve a full-on government response “to address these threats to their lives and their livelihood and they need it now.”
The $2.2 trillion legislation will speed government payments of $1,200 to most Americans and increase jobless benefits for millions of people thrown out of work. Businesses big and small will get loans, grants and tax breaks. It will send unprecedented billions to states and local governments, and the nation’s all but overwhelmed health care system.
“This is not a time for cynicism or invective or second-guessing,” said GOP Whip Liz Cheney of Wyoming. “This is a time to remember that we are citizens of the greatest nation on Earth, that we have overcome every challenge we have faced, and we will overcome this one.”
Despite reservations, arch conservatives joined with progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., to back the bill, which moved quickly through a Congress that’s been battered by partisanship and is itself not immune to the suffering the virus has caused. Reps. Joe Cunningham, D-S.C., and Mike Kelly, R-Pa., announced Friday that they’d tested positive, bringing the number of infected lawmakers to five.
Tea party Republicans said government orders to shutter businesses merited actions that conflict with their small-government ideology. Liberals accepted generous corporate rescues that accompany larger unemployment benefits, deferrals of student loans, and an enormous surge of funding for health care and other agencies responding to the crisis.
“I’m going to have to vote for something that has things in it that break my heart,” said conservative Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz.
Many lawmakers summoned the bipartisan spirit of 9/11 and efforts to fight terrorism. Others praised the roles low-income workers play in keeping the country going and the heroism of health care workers. Some, like Iowa Democrat Abby Finkenauer, who had just learned of two additional coronavirus-related deaths in her district, came close to tears.
Others couldn’t restrain their partisan impulses. Republicans chided Democratic leaders for delays and provisions they see as extraneous, such as funding for public broadcasting and the arts; Democrats said too many elements are a bailout for corporations that may not need it.
Still, in a chamber increasingly populated by lawmakers whose chief skill often seems to be partisan attacks, Friday’s debate was a noteworthy break.
“We have no time to dither,” said Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va. “We have no time to engage in ideological or petty partisan fights. Our country needs us as one.”
The run-up to the vote contained an element of drama because libertarian conservative Thomas Massie, R-Ky., announced plans to seek a roll call vote.
Leaders of both parties united to prevent that because it would have forced lawmakers back to the Capitol or blemished their voting records if they stayed home. Instead, they made sure enough lawmakers would attend Friday’s session to block Massie’s move under the rules, and lawmakers took the unprecedented step of sitting in the visitors galleries to establish the necessary quorum.
The House promptly adjourned for a weeks-long recess but will return later in the spring to consider further legislation.
“This bill is not only a rescue package, it’s a commitment – a commitment that your government, and the people whom you elected to serve you, will do everything we can to limit the harm and hardship you face, both now and in the foreseeable future,” said Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
The massive CARES Act started as a draft plan among Republicans controlling the Senate who were seeking a greater voice in the coronavirus response efforts — especially after Pelosi was a dominant force in earlier legislation imposing a sick leave mandate on businesses.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., welcomed Democratic participation a week ago, and signed off on a major expansion of unemployment insurance, but his efforts to freeze out Pelosi and force a quick agreement were met with Democratic demands for large infusions of aid to states and hospitals, as well as an assortment of smaller items. McConnell and top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York wrestled for days, along with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and other administration officials.
Negotiations finally produced a deal early Wednesday morning, and the Senate passed the measure by a 96-0 vote.
The legislation dwarfs prior Washington responses to crises like 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and natural disasters.
Key elements are untested, such as grants to small businesses to keep workers on payroll and complex lending programs to larger businesses. Rebate payments will go to people who have retained their jobs. Agencies like the Small Business Administration and state unemployment systems will be severely taxed, and conservatives fear that a new, generous unemployment benefit will dissuade jobless people from returning to the workforce.
The bill amounts to a bridge loan for much of the economy and carries a price tag that equals half the size of the entire $4 trillion-plus annual federal budget.
The legislation also establishes a $454 billion program for guaranteed, subsidized loans to larger industries in hopes of leveraging up to $4.5 trillion in lending to distressed businesses, states, and municipalities.
There is also $150 billion devoted to the health care system, including $100 billion for grants to hospitals and other health care providers buckling under the strain of COVID-19 caseloads.
It also seeks to strengthen the safety net for the poor and homeless. Schools and students would get relief, small business loans payments would be deferred. Evictions from public housing would be put on pause.
Republicans successfully pressed for an employee retention tax credit designed to help companies keep workers on payroll. Companies would also be able to defer payment of the 6.2% Social Security payroll tax. A huge tax break for interest costs and operating losses limited by the 2017 tax overhaul was restored at a $200 billion cost in a boon for the real estate sector.
Most people who contract the new coronavirus have mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, or death.

Trump signs $2.2 trillion stimulus after swift, bipartisan congressional votes
WASHINGTON D.C. — President Donald Trump signed an unprecedented $2.2 trillion economic rescue package into law Friday, after swift and near-unanimous action by Congress this week to support businesses, rush resources to overburdened health care providers and help struggling families during the deepening coronavirus epidemic.

“This pathogen does not recognize party lines, and no partisan solution will defeat it. Neither will the government acting alone,” said GOP Whip Liz Cheney of Wyoming. “This is not a time for cynicism or invective or second-guessing. This is a time to remember that we are citizens of the greatest nation on Earth, that we have overcome every challenge we have faced, and we will overcome this one.”
Despite reservations, arch conservatives joined with progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., to back the bill, which moved quickly through a Congress that’s been battered by partisanship and is itself not immune to the suffering the virus has caused. Despite strong economy, many Americans struggling to get by

Despite strong economy, many Americans struggling to get by
Despite a strong economy, about 40 percent of American families struggled to meet at least one of their basic needs last year, including paying for food, health care, housing or utilities.
That’s according to an Urban Institute survey of nearly 7,600 adults that found that the difficulties were most prevalent among adults with lower incomes or health issues. But it also revealed that people from all walks of life were running into similar hardships.
The findings issued Tuesday by the nonprofit research organization highlight the financial strains experienced by many Americans in an otherwise strong economy.
The average unemployment rate for 2017 was 4.4 percent, a low that followed years of decline. But having a job doesn’t ensure families will be able to meet their basic needs, said Michael Karpman, one of the study’s authors. Among the households with at least one working adult, more than 30 percent reported hardship. “Economic growth and low unemployment alone do not ensure everyone can meet their basic needs,” the authors wrote.
Food insecurity was the most common challenge: More than 23 percent of households struggled to feed their family at some point during the year. That was followed by problems paying a family medical bill, reported by about 18 percent. A similar percentage didn’t seek care for a medical need because of the cost.
Additionally, roughly 13 percent of families missed a utility bill payment at some point during the year. And 10 percent of families either didn’t pay the full amount of their rent or mortgage, or they paid it late.
While startling data to some, it comes as no surprise to those Americans who are struggling to get by.
Debra Poppelaars of Nashville, Tennessee, underwent spinal fusion surgery last fall and was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly thereafter. Although she is insured, she owes roughly $19,000 for her portion of the medical bills.
Between disability, a job change and the mounting debt, she hasn’t been able to make ends meet and is now facing bankruptcy. “It’s very hard at 64 years old, I look back and think I am in this position and I should be able to retire,” she said.
Jerri Wood of Renton, Washington, says she makes choices each month to pay one bill instead of another as she struggles to pay for her health care. Wood has lived for years with a brain tumor that requires regular monitoring and was recently diagnosed with diabetes that she takes insulin to manage.
Rising costs for her care, even with insurance, have her juggling bills to get by — such as paying her cellphone or electricity bill one month and not the next. And she still feels like one of the lucky ones as she is able to survive.
“There is such a need for safety nets, so many people are in this position,” she said.
The Urban Institute survey comes at a time when lawmakers are considering cuts to some safety-net programs, such as Medicaid, SNAP and housing assistance.
The researchers said that lawmakers run the risk of increasing the rate of hardship if they reduce support services.
It is the first study on the subject by the DC-based organization, which looks at economic and social policy issues. The institute plans to conduct the study every year to track the well-being of families as the economy and safety net systems evolve.
