A (Re-) Introduction
Hello everyone!
Given that there is a lot people now migrating over to my Tumblr page given the the instability of Twitter, and the fact that I’ve largely only been using this account to cross-promote my latest videos, I figured it might be best to try and reintroduce myself on the platform, for those who are not familiar with me - and maybe for some people that are.
I’m Mathew Buck, who goes by the nickname Film Brain, and I make videos about movies. Sometimes you’ve heard of them. Sometimes you haven’t. But hopefully I’ve managed to make them entertaining and enlightening. I have a series called Bad Movie Beatdown, one which hasn’t been active in a few years, partly due to the cultural shift following the exodus of another certain website, but is still fondly remembered by some (and the others on a daily basis let me know how much they hate it). I have another series called Projector, where I review movies that have opened in the UK first before they do in the States, which means there’s a steady mix of good and bad. And lastly I have a podcast from time-to-time, for the movies I can’t talk about in those categories.
I’ve had plenty of my ups and downs over the years - and in some corners, I’m probably just a punchline - but if you’re here, welcome! I try and do my best.

(via Wall Street Journal's Bitter Condemnation of Barbie Has Me Sprinting to the Theater)
Wall Street Journal’s Kyle Smith:
“While Barbie is discovering herself,” Smith writes, “Ken learns that real society is male-dominated and uses the lesson to turn Barbieland into the Kendom—a bro paradise of brewskis and weight lifting. In his ideal state, ‘Everything exists to expand and elevate the presence of men.’ Spot the joke? I don’t. ‘Barbie’ contains more swipes at ‘the patriarchy’ than a year’s worth of Ms. magazine.”
No offense to Ms., but any review that considers a magazine founded in 1971 to be the epicenter of current feminist thought is probably named c.
Smith continues: “As bubbly as the film appears, its script is like a grumpier-than-average women’s studies seminar.”

Goncharov coming third in tumblr's top 100 movies of 2023 is so damn funny. Imagine being a film studio exec who spent millions making some of the other 97 movies listed below it only to be beaten by a film that cost exactly zero dollars to make and doesn't exist

“i’ll be so lucky to have you” is such a beautiful line. himi knowingly returns to a world that is destined to consume her in the fires she holds dear, all because they’re also the very doors that’ll bring mahito into existence.
and that’s the enduring essence of miyazaki’s works: life, through all its suffering and misery, is still worth living. through the people we love and the memories we cherish, we search for and find our reasons to live.

So there was a french animated film about the friendship between Icarus and the Minotaur last year and I was supposed to hear about it on the bird app?
I mean it’s literally not streaming anywhere yet nor does it have a home media release at this time but I would like to get hyped in hopes of one of those things happening eventually.

Smile: Film review
You should know me by now… if there’s a horror film coming out. I am totally on that bandwagon. Last week was Jeepers Creepers: Reborn. But this week was Smile. I will try to write this review with no spoilers, but I can’t make any promises. Firstly, I saw the trailer to this on multiple adverts for films, as well as YouTube and Facebook ads. I was intrigued by the premise of a smile, being used…
