The phrase "o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave" reminds us of the privilege of living in the United States, despite its imperfections. Travelers to other countries may understand the limitations on freedom of speech, religion, and press that exist elsewhere. In contrast, the sacrifices made by past, present, and future men and women have given us the opportunity to pursue happiness in a country with certain liberties. The military plays a crucial role in protecting these freedoms, enabling institutions like New York University to thrive. Without the security provided by the military, our civilization would be at risk of being oppressed and destroyed. As a combat veteran, I understand the value of this protection and have personally sacrificed for it. Despite this, I am currently engaged in a four-year legal battle with NYU, who wishes to evict me from my childhood home that I defended. Despite my status as a combat-disabled veteran, NYU has shown no concern for my situation and wishes me out at all cost. My next court date is on April 25th, 2023. While it is difficult to fight for our rights, we must be willing to do so in order to improve our country. Just like with the women's marches, there needs to be a day that we fight back as a unit, as a group. We need a day that we stage a walk out, a nationwide if not worldwide protest. When I returned home from Iraq in 2003, I initially didn't think anything was wrong with me. I was happy to be home, but I felt depressed without really knowing why. Part of that feeling was because most of my battalion and brothers were still in Iraq, and a part of me wanted to be back there with them. My battalion was the first ground troops to cross into the country, leading the invasion. However, I was held on stop-loss when we deployed. When I returned to 29 Palms, I found it to be a ghost town. We had no guidance on how to return to civilian life. When I got sent home, I was excited to meet my brand new firstborn son and start my life. I survived war, and my biggest fear was being killed in combat and my son never getting to meet his father. I felt like I deserved to live my life and be happy. Being among the first combat veterans of the 21st century was challenging and lonely. I was diagnosed with PTSD, but back then, most people didn't even know what it was. However, in 2020, due to COVID-19, mental health became a well-known issue. I believe that veterans and other people can help in big or small ways in coping with PTSD. Because of my hardships and dark days, I feel like I can potentially help others cope by sharing what works for me.
