9 Jan 2019
Hello there! New year seems a long and distant memory now but have no fear, three more songs to let into your life and hopefully bring some enjoyment to an always dreary early January feel!
First this week some Belgian based Latin music.......you are WELCOME! The group are called The Chakachas and were formed in the late 1950′s by many Belgian based Latin Soul session musicians. By the time they had stopped performing as a group in the late 1970′s they had achieved minor success in both UK & the US, their only number one coming in their native Belgium.....and you can imagine the competition it was up against. That said, the song I have chosen to share, taken from the soundtrack of one of the Grand Theft Auto games, allowed me to explore a little into their discography and there is some pretty good stuff! The minor success I referred to came in the form of the song ‘Jungle Fever’ which reached number 8 in the US but was not given the airplay in the UK due to the inclusion of moaning noises and heavy breathing! Enjoy this song anyway, a very happy feel to it!

Secondly this week and something from good old Blighty, namely a group called Field Music. Formed in 2004 in Newcastle they have released seven albums to date and I first heard of them after hearing a song off their 2012 release ‘Plumb’. That song was called ‘(I Keep Thinking About) A New Thing’ and I enjoyed the album enough to check on their earlier releases. A mix of what critics have called art-rock combined with hints of art-pop mean a upbeat tempo to all their songs which are very cleverly written. The group were Mercury prize nominated and for my money deserve more success than they have attained so far. Their latest album released in February 2018 entitled ‘Open Here’ is a slight change to a more synth based direction with songs like ‘Count It Up’ a good advert for the album. The song I have chosen is one of my favourite of theirs off their 2016 release ‘Commontime’, there’s plenty of stuff of theirs to listen to and I will leave it in your capable hands to you to give the back catalogue a listen and decide upon your favourite album of theirs!

Finally this week and I’m going back to my ‘comfort music’. I give you my apologies now for this but with more time at home over the Christmas period I had some of my old music out and listened to some absolutely sensational stuff I have not listened to in a long time. Hands up who wants a 20 minute psychedelic rock song.....anyone?! Well I do! I often find myself lying in dark rooms relaxing to music and the band I love more than any other for this venture is Pink Floyd. Their brand of rock has had me hooked ever since hearing ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ for the first time in my teens. I’m convinced that hangovers, colds and fevers can be cured by killing the lights, plugging into DSOTM at a high volume and allowing yourself to drift off with the music. Tried and tested, it should be prescribed by doctors across the land! Now, if you are not Pink Floyd fans or only know the popular hits of theirs, ‘Another Brick In The Wall’, ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘Money’ etc then here are a couple of songs for you to enjoy. My favourite song’s of theirs would probably be ‘Sheep’ from the album Animals, ‘Time’ from DSOTM and ‘Learning To Fly’ from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. There are plenty of other favourites but back to lying in a dark room, I had the following song and I could’ve lay there for hours listening to it. Try it, you know you want to!
Pink Floyd - Echoes - https://youtu.be/HuBqE9xGtiQ
So there we go, another posting done. Hope you find time to give all the songs shared a listen as well as the additional tracks/albums which are well worth a listen. Until next week, take it steady!

Field Music – Phase One, Liverpool (9th January 2020)
Helmed by Sunderland born multi-instrumentalist brothers David and Peter Brewis, Field Music have been active since the mid-2000's releasing music together but separately as School of Language (David), The Week That Was and You Tell Me (both Peter). Despite their fourth album Plumb being nominated for a Mercury Prize back in 2012, they've never quite reached a wide audience. Given the strength of their back catalog, there's a good argument to be made that they've been one of the most underrated bands in the country over the past decade and a half. Their superbly crafted, hook-filled blend of various forms of 70's and 80's rock is quite distinctive, borrowing from the likes of Talking Heads, Steely Dan, XTC, Todd Rundgren, Roxy Music, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Prefab Sprout, among many others.

Performing at Liverpool's Phase One on the eve of the release of their seventh LP (excluding film scores and covers albums), Making A New World is an ambitious release. A 19-track concept album about the impact the First World War had on wider society, it grew out of a project they undertook for the Imperial War Museum. Ambitious projects are not something the Brewis brothers are averse to though, with 2010's 20-track double album Measure a prime example. There were a few awkwardly funny efforts to explain the concept behind Making A New World, including jokes about having to do research for the album via Wikipedia. After a bit of rambling they directed the audience towards the liner notes before kicking off their hour long 'in-store' set with some tracks from the new record. Joined on stage by three members of their touring band, the Brewis brothers admitted to being a little rusty on stage but it definitely didn't show. It was only right that they started off with a few tracks from Making A New World. The piano-led 'A Change Of Heir', inspired by pioneering skin graft work which has led to advances including gender reassignment surgery, is strongly reminiscent of The Wall-era Pink Floyd. While the third single from the album 'Do You Read Me?', which is about the first time a pilot used radio communication in 1917, is a more propulsive piece of pop featuring additional backing vocals from keyboardist Liz Corney.

After introducing us to some of their newest material, Peter turned to David on drums and asked: "Shall we do a old one?" Receiving a pretty big cheer, they played a few classics such as 'Those That Do Nothing' from their career best Measure, along with an incredibly catchy pairing from 2016's Commontime in the form of 'Disappointed' and 'The Noisy Days Are Over' reminding everyone just what an excellent band they are. After a run of older tracks, David then announced (realising how absurd it sounded) that they were "gonna do a song about the development of sanitary towels.” Blending peak Talking Heads with disco, 'Only In A Man’s World' comments on how menstruation has generally been looked down upon with David repeating the line: "Why should a woman feel ashamed?" It may take a few listens to get into the conceptual elements of Making A New World but there are a few instant Field Music classics to be found on the album until it clicks. Containing a strong hint of 10CC, 'Money Is A Memory' is definitely one of them with its slightly comical look at the admin side of the war reparations Germany were forced to pay under the Treaty of Versailles (something historians have put forward as one of the causes of the Second World War). In a strange coincidence, David pointed out that Making A New World would actually come out on the 100th anniversary of the of the Versailles Treaty. But before leaving the stage to sign some copies of the album, they had time for just one more track, opting to go with 'A New Thing' from 2012's Plumb. A fine choice with its echoes of Television and 1980's King Crimson, among others. Making A New World is available now via Memphis Industries Read the full article

Background notes of wet funky earth that gets progressively more dank as the sups go on without spoiling the fresh grassy profile. Soft bite and bitters. Medium carbonation with light oily mouth feel. Aftertaste is hay and grass. Rustic is bang on, lovely.

Elkezdődött saját field music-féleségem a netre kúszni, zömmel tájban gyűjtött hangokat továbbgondolva (eddig csak az Alsónémedi "Csatorna dala" került fel, de az is nagyon halk. S rettenetes.) A https://der-bozot.bandcamp.com/ profilon bárki meghallgathatja, aki szeretne egy jót szenvedni :-) Dallamokat senki ne várjon, téglák zaja, fasuhogás, torz-zivatar, kőpattogás, vasajtó-csukódás, kétéltű-dalolás, varjúkárogás, hollóének ellenben bármikor bekövetkezhet. #fieldmusic #ambient #experimental #nature #music #noise #DerBozot (helyszín: Alsónémedi)
