What to Expect

1 Night accommodation.

Transport for the duration of the safari.

Professional guides (FGASA registered) who have a good knowledge of the park and are very familiar with the routes traveled while on safari. They are experienced and will know which routes are best to travel and where the best areas are for seeing various animals species.

Groups are generally averaged at 4- 6 individuals per safari but may be 10 at times.

The guides will always try and position vehicles in a way which allows for guests to take the best photos under the circumstances.The guides will also stop at panoramic viewpoints along the route, to ensure you get the best scenic photo.

Accommodation

Your stay will be in luxury en- suite rooms. Different lodges will be made use of depending on availability. Your needs will be catered for in these luxurious lodges which offer a host of facilities. Rooms are fully serviced and will accommodate your every need.

Climate and Weather conditions

Summer- October to March is when the area sees a significant amount of rainfall. Temperatures are expected to be between 26 °C and 30 °C.

Winter- This is known to be the best time to visit the park. During the period around July to October, animals in the park are easier to spot and spend longer feeding. It is also mating season which is definitely worth seeing. Days are generally warm and clear.

Trishala was born in Aberdeen Scotland on a warm spring day. She was welcomed into the world by her parents and two older brothers. She loved life and embraced it head-on from the moment she learned to walk. Trishala developed a love for animals at a young age. The sciences were her favorite subjects in school. She attended Oxford University and majored in Zoology. When she graduated she was presented with the opportunity to go to South Africa and study to be a safari guide. Trishala jumped at the chance. Once completing her FGASA levels Trishala became a guide for the Djuma Private Game Reserve which is a 9,000 ha private game reserve which is part of the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. It is situated on the western border of the Kruger National Park, which together with some other parks make up the Greater Kruger National Park. Trishala lives in the Field Camp with other guides and staff. She and other guides conduct safari live drives twice daily which people all over the world watch and enjoy. She loves her career and can't imagine doing anything else. Trishala doesn't get back to Scotland often as her heart belongs to South Africa.

Within his first year he moved from an independent guide hired on a tour-to-tour basis, to a full time Jenmanite, leading both specialized series tours as well as guided groups and fam trips. His love for nature started as a young boy herding goats, donkeys, and cattle in rural Zimbabwe, and he says that from the time he joined the Boy Scouts, his dream for a career in guiding was obvious. Since then, he has gathered many experiences to share – “things have happened on our safaris that I could talk the whole day without a break. Get up at 5.30 am every morning. At 6 am sharp with sunrise the open 4x4 leaves camp to go on a 3+ hour game drive. “Good morning! Please keep your precious limbs inside the vehicle at all times and don’t throw any litter out of the car” says 19-year old Ivo from Berlin who is driving the vehicle and guiding this morning’s excursion. He decides where to stop, explains what we are seeing and answers questions. The other 6 students are acting as guests, and there is an Eco-Training instructor in every car - disseminating 5 - 40 years of guiding experience, pointing out cool birds and telling us how to drive smoothly and keep clients excited.

The learning curve is unbelievable. On arrival I would barely find the animals, within weeks I am able to identify most mammals, recognize their gender, explain social structures and behavioral patterns. It’s the beautiful journey from saying “wow, that is an elephant” to seeing “this one is a bull on musth, he appears to be following a breeding herd that must have come through earlier. He usually breaks trees on his right tusks and while he pretends to be ignoring us, he may have taken a beating this morning - it’s not a good time to test his boundaries.”

Tourists will eagerly tick off their big 5 - but for us, this is just the beginning. We learn about so much more. A series of lectures span just about all natural aspects: In 17 modules they cover anything from geological features and rocks through the different plants they support, astronomy and weather systems and types of biomes. We learn about animals from the tiniest insects through giant elephants, survival and replication strategies. And then of course there is a whole world of birds :-) within 2 months all of us will be able to correctly identify 100% of at least 50 different birds, by sight….and sound!

The two game drives or walks each day feel like a mastermind treasure hunt with our instructors gamifying everything. Whose feather is this? What animal left this marking on a tree? How does this insect survive? But every answer triggers another question.

While our instructors’ wealth of knowledge has no boundaries and appears unachievable, they teach us curiosity, they teach us that nobody has all the answers and it’s about wondering, observing and researching. They teach us that everything interlinks. It reminds me strongly of what Alexander von Humboldt referred to as the “web of life”. All aspects influence each other: The soils drive the plants, attracting herbivores who are then in turnfood for the predators. Weather systems cause rain to flourish the grass in certain regions through different seasons driving migration.

This is also the style of guiding they teach us: Your clients don’t just want a run-down of statistical data, they can google facts themselves. What makes a game drive rich is interpretation. What can the guest learn about an animal right now through his observation and your explanation? Tell them a story, help them discover!

Elegant Grasshopper The bright colours called (aposematic colouration) is a defence mechanism, making potential predators aware that they are poisonous. They produce a yellow liquid through their exoskeleton, making them taste real bad. Despite this, the Pedi tribes used to eat them with their porridge to add more flavor, and had no ill effects from the poisons. Roan antelope feature continued (3/3)... ~ My personal experiences with roan antelope across Africa: ~ This particular subspecies is H. e. cottoni, one of six subsp.
