Roan antelope feature continued (3/3)... ~ My personal experiences with roan antelope across Africa: ~ This particular subspecies is H. e. cottoni, one of six subsp. I have seen roan only in a few locations in all my travels, including in Moremi GR, Botswana 🇧🇼(these photos); in Busanga Plains, the northern private section of Kafue NP in Zambia 🇿🇲 where I also saw sable in the same area; I think maybe Kasanka NP, also in Zambia; and in Namibia’s 🇳🇦 Khaudum Game Reserve, southwest of The Caprivi Strip, Bwabwata NP. ~ I have a grand total of only 36 photos of roan, most of them taken on one of my RAW Safaris last October, 2019, in Botswana. ~ It's really a rare treat when you see them! ~ For more info visit www.raw-worldwide.com . . . . . #antelope #antelopes #roan #roanantelope #roanhorse #roanokeoutside #roanmountain #minimalistphotographer #breakfreewitholympus #olympusphotography #olympusomd #getolympus #olympusau #olympusaustralia #natgeoyourshots #natgeoyourshot #wildlifephotographers #wildlifephotographs #ecologylife #wildlifeecology #nature_perfection #ecologytours #africananimal #africananimals #africanwildlife #africanwildlifephotography #africanwildlifefoundation #fgasa #wildlifefacts #wildlifemonitoring (at Kruger National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAY3u3mFrcE/?igshid=1q2571yx6ke3x

Well my friends, this is my last post from Tonga and it’s not a whale photo! Haha. I wanted to share what it’s like to be in the water being present with what’s going on around you. This is a perfect example of one of the many times you’ll be waiting for whales and pinching yourself for what’s going on. Thanks for your patience with me for this series, I can’t believe I was in Tonga in August last year! Lol. Massive thanks again to Olympus for hosting me on this trip, and to Scott Portelli for running such amazing… Well my friends, this is my last post from Tonga and it’s not a whale photo! Haha. Capturing the last moments a season or the first moments of another season. What is nice about living in a city like Melbourne, and a lot of people might disagree is the seasons of the year. You ask locals what is special about Melbourne? After the" city that caters for families, sport capital, public events, Etc... You assured eventually to teach the subject of weather. "We have 4 seasons in one day" you hear locals say. As true as it might be, we also have 4 brilliantly defined seasons- each of which brings with its own unique characteristics. And the transition between seasons is also full of character. This frame depict the end of Autumn and the start of winter, a family ( in this case its mine) taking a walk along a row of mostly"naked" trees, but the colour hasn't completely gone. Enjoy. #thatsMelbourne #melbournecity #ilovemelbourne #seasons #autumn #autumnleaves #olympus #olympusaustralia #omdem5

Roan Antelope feature continued... ~ Food / Eating Habits: Roan are grazers (eat grasses etc) and eat mid-length grasses. ~ Group Structure / Sexual Habits: Roan antelope form harem groups up to ~15 animals, with a dominant male. Males commonly fight for dominance of their herd, clashing horns and often moving the fight to their knees. ~ Reproduction: Reach sexual maturity by 2.5 to 3 years, gestation last 9 months (long for an antelope). Lifespan to 18 years. ~ Predators: Limited to larger predators, predominantly lions, though weak/injured/young animals could fall prey to leopards, wild dogs and spotted hyena. ~ Tracking: Their spine arches/dips slightly, again much like a horse or zebra, and from observation their tracks appear to semi-register - their dipped/slightly sloped back causes their rear foot to not "register" within the track left by the front foot while walking - only partially. Ungulate, two-hoofed animal, dewclaws may register in deep sand/mud. ~ IUCN Red List (Conservation) Status / Threats: Least concern, 50-60,000 individuals. Threats incl. urban development, agriculture conflict/competition for grazing land and poaching for bushmeat. ~ For more info visit www.raw-worldwide.com . . . . . #antelope #antelopes #roan #roanantelope #roanhorse #roanokeoutside #roanmountain #minimalistphotographer #breakfreewitholympus #olympusphotography #olympusomd #getolympus #olympusau #olympusaustralia #natgeoyourshots #natgeoyourshot #wildlifephotographers #wildlifephotographs #ecologylife #wildlifeecology #nature_perfection #ecologytours #africananimal #africananimals #africanwildlife #africanwildlifephotography #africanwildlifefoundation #fgasa #wildlifefacts #wildlifemonitoring (at Kafue National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAYoFaJlyYy/?igshid=jiohfqk1xgbv

The money shot! Nothing can describe what it feels like to have a squirming, wiggling, lovable baby humpback whale a few meters away from you. I can tell you though, it’s really hard to stay focused on your camera in the heat of the experience. Really, really, really hard! I’m so grateful that I have my Olympus and my native housing and it’s the same as picking up a camera in any other circumstances. In Tonga, the fun wasn’t only in the water. There were literally whales everywhere! We witnessed, and participated in, heat runs. We saw all manner of whale shenanigans on the surface and we had beautiful close encounters underwater too. I’m incredibly fortunate to have two cameras so I made sure I kept one close by at all times. It was actually pretty comical because I’d be “gearing” up to get in the water for a drop (snorkel and mask, fins and underwater housing) and then something like this would happen and I’d be reaching for my other camera and shooting… In Tonga, the fun wasn’t only in the water. Okay, okay. I know that everyone has said that they’re sad I’m not sharing Antarctica shots anymore, but I actually have something just as good to share with you! We’re going back to Tonga. Well, we’re not “actually” going back, I WISH! No, we’re “visually” going back, so that I can share some of the many, many images that I haven’t shared yet. You might remember that this was a job that Olympus sent me on, to talk about their native underwater camera housings. It was a life changing trip for me, but one that I wasn’t able to share very well, due to being overcommitted on work projects. So, I’m setting things straight and sharing six of my favourite unshared shots of Tonga. During this particular encounter a mother and her calf were below us and we were floating on the surface waiting for them to come up. I’ll never forget the feeling of looking down and seeing these magnificent animals just below us, and the surprise when we finally encountered them up close. @Olympus_Au #OlympusInspired _________________________________ Gear and Settings: ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II M.
