Week 9: Gaming communities, Social gaming and Live streaming
The world of gaming culture has seen a lot of change, evolved beyond then what it used to be decades ago from arcade games to console games and games on phone. Nowadays, gaming has transformed into a digital state where people easily access and connect to everyone and created community to play games.
 Gaming in modern day is far different than it used to be, back then playing games was mostly about individual achievement only. Nowadays, more games are moving online where people can easily bring together, share some interest together which creates a gaming community. Online gaming communities can be thought of as ecosystems in which players compete with or work together with in-game organizations for resources (Sun, 2021). From this added a step further and social gaming was created for people to team up or compete with other strangers or friends in real time no matter where they are.  Online video games are social spaces where friendships are frequently formed. Co-players are frequently more than just people who support one another in achieving in-game objectives. Co-players frequently grow to be close, dependable friends and appreciated online advisors (Kwert, 2014). Games like Minecraft on the iPad version it fully utilizes the many haptic play dimensions, providing additional sensory learning opportunities that traditional educational settings would not be able to provide. Minecraft not only enables a range of digital play methods but also a range of material and social interactions within the home (Hjorth, 2021). In addition, Live streaming is also a way to throw a spotlight for individuals to share their gameplay experience to the world and a way to socialize and engage people online through many platforms like Twitch or YouTube gaming livestream platforms. All these platforms are where all gamers can start from casual live streamer stream play game to slowly rise to become a popular streamer with a very influential voice in gaming community or become pro esports athletes. To viewers chat can join in the live stream to participate in the conversation with the creator, ask some advice and be part of the live stream interactive experience.
 Videogame in modern world now is not just only about entertainment and kill time, but it also a way to connect more gamer and creating a culture. From gaming community and social gaming to live streaming, with the help of advance technology and change the way of mindset about gaming these will continue to grow more popularity upcoming in future.

Social Gaming
What is social gaming? The term hasn’t had a universal definition yet. For the purpose of this discussion, social gaming is regarded as a community multiplayer game area in which the goal of beating the game is secondary to the social component of participating in the game (Reis & Ashmore 2022, p. 11). A few examples of social games are Among Us, Roblox, Minecraft (if you are playing the multiplayer servers) etc. As humans are complex beings, the online communities and interactions ought to have some negative aspects, just like reality. Let’s explore the dark sides of social gaming.
Toxicity
I believe every gamer has experienced unjustified bad attitudes, behaviors, or hostility in multiplayer games before. Why is the supposedly collaborative affordance of social games shifting towards toxicity? Let examine the possible reasons. The concept of toxic gaming culture is premised on the widespread acceptance of deviant behaviors while playing video games, and the tendency to absolve oneself of responsibility for such behavior on the grounds that it is harmless (Kowert 2020, p. 1). From the psychology perspective, social cognitive theory holds that people acquire toxic gaming behaviors via social learning (Nickerson 2022). Games with toxic gamer cultures would perpetuate toxicity. Besides, Theory of Planned Behavior states that context determines an individual's intention to participate in harmful behavior (Brookes 2021). That is, if toxic conduct is tolerated as a group standard and perpetrators are not punished, individuals may behave adversely toward others. Moreover, online disinhibition effect states that when you engage online, people cannot see you and don't know you, which allow individuals to break social norms without fear of penalties (Suler 2004, p. 321). From the perspective of the game itself, the imbalance skill levels, and competitive nature of the game can drive toxic behaviors such as throwing (simply play), sabotaging (team killing), and verbal abuse (Kou 2022).

Social displacement
Online video game activity may have harmful social repercussions, particularly for adolescents. As we all know, teenagers have plenty of time to play online video games. This suggests that teens prefer gaming over socializing. Second, as one reaches adolescence, they concentrate on their friends instead of their parents for intimacy and emotional support. Replacing genuine interactions with online ones may be harmful, particularly for youth. This is because many critical social skills are developed during adolescent, such as how to form deep emotional connections and regulate one's behavior in social circumstances (verbal displays). Not to mention, increased time spent playing online video games may negatively affect offline social contact in terms of quantity and quality. This further hinders and exacerbates the development of effective social skills and socially acceptable behavior.

Benefits of Social Gaming

Social gaming is an incredibly popular hobby. It was reported by Pew Internet that 97% of teens in the United States play video games (Lenhart et al., 2008, cited by Kowet, 2014). 
With the advancement of technology, gone are the days of a game like pong, where you had a simple controller comprised of one button a joystick,

Now games are much more than playing alone in your house and competing only against yourself and the computer, but with games now integrating internet connection and online games, a deeper community has formed around gaming, “creating a distinctive environment characterised by social play (Kowet, 2014). 
As explained by Kowet (2014), while both traditional games and online games are intended as a form of entertainment, the difference between traditional video games and online ones is that they are “designed to encourage and facilitate interaction among co-players (Chen et al., 2009, cited by Kowet, 2014). 
Not only this, but games are accessed on most devices with an internet connection, ranging from a mobile phone to a Nintendo switch, to an iPad or laptop. I remember the first ever console my family got was a PlayStation2, and we frequently played Scooby doo, Crash Bandicoot and Sing Star. Then a few years later we got a Nintendo Wii where my brothers and I would play games like Mario Kart for hours, and this was also our first ever experience playing online, as we could connect with strangers all around the world and race against them.

But what does this have to do with forming digital communities you may ask?
Bowman explains that video games tend to have a reputation for being isolating, however there are a few social benefits that “contribute to wellbeing” (Bowman, 2022). This research suggests that online gaming can be great for socialising and “provide a sense of community among players” (Bowman, 2022). The data collected for this report was over the Covid-19 pandemic, so it is very interesting to see that users stated that maintaining social connections was one of their motivations for gaming, and Lewis et. al “found feelings of loneliness deceased as players visited each other’s in-game properties” (Bowman, 2022)

I think it is no surprise that video games can help teach children social skills, as each gaming platform has its own conventions or social contracts. I know for myself I find playing games mostly relaxing because I can switch off my brain, and I feel that more research is needed to explore the benefits of social gaming.

Social Gaming & Live-Streaming
Video games are an increasingly popular form of media entertainment, especially with younger generations. They not only provide digital entertainment through challenging virtual obstacles, but it also allows users to connect online. This social element allows people to find and chat with others who have similar interests, in terms of gaming or watching live streaming. This element has only been recently introduced, with games that are “designed to encourage and facilitate interaction among co-players, creating a distinctive environment characterised by social play” (Kowert, Domahidi, Festl, Quandt 2014, p. 386). In view of all of this, a main pressing issue that is being examined over gaming is understanding the distinction between reality versus virtual. It's turning into a risk for consumers to succumb to this "media transformation" (Taylor, T.L 2018, p. 11), as the current week's reading discusses, particularly for the people who are young, passive and susceptible. With games, they mirror our leisure life, as they are a departure from an individuals real world. They additionally mirror our characters in view of how we introduce ourselves on the web and our exemplification of our identity as an individual is basically deciphered onto these platforms. Without separating the two and instead hazing real and virtual, this can affect an individual's beliefs and reality, as they can bring that virtual part with them into this present reality. Live streaming is becoming a huge industry of its own, as its creating new forms of content, to be consumed by audiences, in the media and entertainment industry. It digitises real-life experiences for people to watch over a screen, such as watching a sporting game (live-streamed sports) or watching friends or other people play video games (live-streamed gaming). It also allows small, self-employed creators access to “consumer interaction and engagement” (Wongkitrungrueng, Dehouche, Assarut 2019, p. 488) that can earn them a lot of profit. Digital programs contributing to this include, YouTube, Discord, and Twitch. Twitch is currently a major topic of the internet gaming discussion, because of the large amounts of what the ongoing program is creating in live-streaming media. It's an online platform that connects users from around the world, where they watch creators live video content. The program has contributed to making live streaming its own industry inside media and entertainment, in view of its enormous consumerism and large income.
