Fern lore Pt 2

Around Equestria at this time, strange things began to occur; zombies began to appear and strange signs were seen, for Umbra in desperation decided to unleash an ancient evil and thereby enable his rise to power so far blocked by the team aboard the Retribution.  It did not help things that at this moment Hex and the old lich were swapped with versions of themselves from another, more violent universe in which Necrosis was a drunken menace and Hex the leader of the group trying to stop them. However, this version of Hex ordered Fern around (for in his world she was his officer) and kissed Featherwing (in his world his wife), confusing them both. 

At one point, Fern and the team had to put down a zombie dance party (thanks to alt-Necrosis) in a ruined town en route to the Griffon kingdom.  The team was travelling there tof stop Umbra’s plan to open Tartarus and release the Titans to overthrow by force the current order. Though the ponies were already dead, it still felt as if she had killed an actual pony and it got to her, as she was a gentle soul.  Featherwing, feeling pity for the pony that had saved her life and having dealt with such things before, decided to comfort Fern and help her through this.  As a result, they became friends.  Because Hex had been in the other world, he now saw Featherwing as a valid alternative option to Fern, and when he returned he decided to pursue her.  Fern was happy for her new friend and supported her in this, but then Hex made a mistake, for he still had feelings for Fern.  He confessed his feelings to her and kissed her.  Fern was extremely confused, but Hex lied and said that his relationship with Featherwing was through.  Because of Fern’s wishing to avoid hurting Featherwing’s feelings she avoided telling Featherwing about it as Hex proceeded to attempt to date both of them at the same time.  Inevitably, this failed and both mares were justly enraged at him.  Their shared rage made them still closer friends and they wrote stories about Hex getting his comeuppance.

Fern’s adopted father, being Hex’s friend, confronted him and forced him to admit his true feelings for Fern and to apologize to both mares.  Fern gave him no answer and instead isolated herself to figure things out (though still occasionally talking with Featherwing).  Eventually they came to terms.  Fern also still held feelings for Hex, but wanted to avoid being hurt again.  After nervously confronting him, Fern decided to give Hex another chance, even though he didn’t deserve it.  Hex, for his part, did his best to be as good a coltfriend as he could and put in real effort.

The final confrontation with Umbra occurred.  Fern and Digi fought him personally, Fern thumping him with a 2x4 and then stabbing him in the eye with it once it was broken.  In the battle Fern and Hex learned to trust each other again, with Hex at one point using a controlled version of the monstrous form last seen on the island to help stop the titans, with Fern as an emotional anchor to return to his senses after.  When it was all over, they became properly close and Hex proposed.  Fern, for her part, stayed in touch with the team afterwards and joined some of them in moving into Ponyville. Fern and Hex’s lives as an engaged couple were not, of course, free from conflict.  Fern’s friend Digi had given birth to a child with rare magical powers, and those powers were coveted.  At one point Fern was kidnapped by a criminal mastermind.  Hex was given a lifelike plush of her which contained a ransom note (revealed by the head detaching alarmingly) demanding Digi’s child in exchange for Fern’s life.  Of course, such a thing was unthinkable, and Hex instead proceeded to rescue her from where she was held at crossbow point by a malicious green unicorn.  It was a close run thing, and the unicorn continued to cause them grief later, even into married life.

As a married couple, both had their personal struggles to face.  They had two children, and on top of the challenges raising them, Hex remembered what he had done in the past with the Featherwing debacle all too well and it hounded him, as it did Fern.  This was combined with Fern knowing Hex was fascinated by pegasi, which made her feel insufficient-as if she wasn’t good enough.  Hex, being well meaning, attempted to make her feel better by giving her mechanical wings, but of course this didn’t help at all-it made both of them feel worse, but they did work it out in the end, mostly.  They continued to be uneasy about things, but soon had other problems to worry about even after their second child had grown and flown the roost. One night in Ponyville, Fern was grabbed roughly and dragged to a dimly lit room. The ponies talked about revenge and how she would be a lesson to the old lich who had adopted her.  They were the vampires from the party all those years ago, and they maintained a grudge.  One of the vampires seized her and used vampire magic to try and calm her and make her compliant as she was drained, however Fern’s will proved too strong and she broke free, biting down hard on the hoof holding her and lashed out in desperation, overpowering her captors, and escaping before they could stop her.  

When she returned home, Hex helped treat her wounded neck, but the next morning she felt strange.  Because she had both had a vampire drink her blood and had accidentally ingested the vampire’s blood she had bitten, she herself transformed into a vampire.  

Being the kind pony she was, she began to waste away from want of blood, until Hex offered himself to feed her.  The first time she almost went to far and it was with great force of will that she stopped herself.  Hex therefore invented an amulet that would gently force her back as she grew near a danger point, and from then on he became her favorite snack, though she does try to avoid too-frequent feedings for his sake. 

As a vampire she has limited transformation powers and tries to avoid sunlight where possible.  It also made her taller and more graceful than the average mare.  She still visits frequently with her friends in Ponyville such as Rosemary and Guru, and Digi with her husband Si Fron.  Only these, the lich, and Featherwing (who she writes to frequently) know her secret.  It’s unclear what happened to the vampires, but they didn’t cause trouble afterwards.

Fern stumbled over his own feet as he was gently shoved into the cramped room. He was confused to say the least, but he wanted to comply. Obedience was crucial.

An unsettling feeling gnawed at him as he stepped inside. Perhaps it was the emptiness of the room, devoid of any windows, save for a single pillow in the center.

According to her, this was to be his new room, a space where he could concentrate better and experience new prophetic visions.

Here's the thing, though. He didn't experience visions; instead, he simply heard a soothing voice that guided him and comforted him in times of need. But Fern lacked the courage to correct her. Even if he did have the guts to do it, she likely wouldn't listen.

As the door slammed shut behind him, a shiver ran down his spine. Was that a lock clicking? A small whimper escaped him, but quickly composed himself. Nobody had time for that. He had a job to fullfil. Even if the instructions didn't make sense.

The room suddenly felt tighter and smaller. So he began pacing around in an attempt to calm his nerves.

This was one of those "times of need" in which Fern yearned for comfort and the kind voice would appear and soothe him with its comforting presence without fail, but his frantic heart drowned out everything, even his own thoughts.

Panic ran through him, his breaths came in short gasps, drowned out by the deafening thud of his heart. He lunged for the door, pounding on it desperately. His chest tightened as he screamed for help and tears started blurring his vision. He suddenly felt a sharp pain on his fingers and stepped away from the door as he looked down at his hands. His fingers had blood in them, an even bigger wave of panic washed over him as he looked back at the door and saw small trails of blood along with some marks on the walls.

He couldn't remember scratching, he was only knocking. Why were there marks on the walls? His heartbeat thundered in his ears, it hurt. He felt a huge knot in his throat, maybe thats why he couldn't breathe. His chest hurt. He wanted out.

He wanted out.

And then, everything faded to black.

When he awoke, he found himself back in his bed. The first thing he saw was her gaze. To most, it was a blank face. But Fern had become quite good at reading her expressions.

This one was one of disappointment disguised as concern.

So Finn and Fern are twins but they didn't grow up together and didn't actually know the other existed until recently becaaaaauuuse they're identical, so when Martin Mertens did his whole abscond escapade with Finn (and just. left Fern I guess??),, Minerva couldn't actually tell which one Martin had taken and which was left at the house. So she raised him as Finn and never talked about the incident.

Later on when Finn-turned-Fern met real Finn and they were able to piece together their family history and all that, Fern chose his new name.

I also headcanon Fern as non binary, definitely somewhere on the aro/ace spectrum, and also neurodivergent although I'm not sure where exactly he'd fall within that umbrella

Sooo basically it starts off with fern and leo just chillin but then leo gots to use the bathroom so he leaves rq

Suddenly Shelby pops out of ferns hat like he's like "dude. It's so obvious you like him" his reasoning is cuz of how close they are and how he's noticed while he's been in his hat. HEAR ME OUT THO ITS NOT A SHIP. I kinda don't like it when people ship their oca with cannon cuz unless it actually has logic. BUT since fern is like, his own person, he himself doesn't really understand it the only "knowledge" of romance is finns memories. So he just goes along with it along with it but still kinda confused. It's like that one reallllyyy old episode when finn was trying to make Pb jealous by hanging out with marcy you gotta watch it to understand. Anyways fern is like "ok, help me out then!!" But then leo comes back, so this time he's nervousish and just says he's gonna go out by himself. When he's alone with Shelby again tho he tells fern sometime like.. "you should tots confess in song form. It'll totally wow him" so just like uh ok. Then theres a lil montage of Shelby being his wingman. So when the time comes, for whatever reason fern invites other peeps but since it's fern so he's not finn popular so it's just a bunch of boring npcs

Anyways when leo shows up fern preforms and it's just really bad over all his words are mumble jumble and leo was NOT expecting this at all. Like imagine a friend your really close to you just confesses to you PLUs in a weird way infront of other people.

After fern is done leo just stands there and the audience doesn't help. It's dead ass silent until some npc shouts "say yes!' And normally when some npc does something like that in a serious situation it's ignored, but that just does it for leo.since He personally doesn't like all the attention and the pressure so he just runs off in the forest. Ppl are like boo I wasted my time and they all just disappear.

Fern at first just stands there until he comes to realization. He didnt even like leo in that way. Their whole friendship was platonic but Shelby saw/thought it in a different way, so that's also his fault.

Anyways this is how the episode would end after all that LOL

Please please give me all the fern lore

Very well, you asked for it. Part 1

A great deal of time (40-50 years) before Twilight came there, an earthpony mare named Bright Fern was born in Ponyville. Her parents perished soon after, leaving her an orphan to be raised by the well meaning in town. She was very kind and helpful but unable to decide what to do with herself as she grew older into her teens. It took her some time to get her cutie mark, but when she did, it was merely an image of a fern, and she did not know what to do with it or what it meant. 

She became exceedingly downtrodden and bounced from job to job until one day she rushed into the Everfree Forest, overcome with despair. Deep she went into the forest, not bothering to look where she was going until she came upon the ruins of the old castle. There she encountered a cruel cockatrice, which turned her to stone. There she remained for the next 20-30 years, in which she was very much forgotten by Ponyville but not by the cockatrice. Occasionally, the cockatrice (which was quite long lived) would partially free her only to turn her back to stone again to toy with her hope; a cruel fate indeed.

Not horribly long after Twilight came to Ponyville, a paramilitary band came to the old castle on a mission to defeat a horde of shadowponies led by an aberration named Umbra who was intent on destroying the world as it was. In the process of combating these devious enemies, the cockatrice was undone and so were its spells. Fern and the other victims (for Fern was not the only one) were freed in the midst of the battle. Poor Fern, thinking this another trick, lashed out in desperation and had to be subdued by the team via a frying pan. When she recovered, she aided one of the team, a mare named Digi, in providing aid to the other victims and to the injured from the battle. They became fast friends.

Following the battle, the team returned to Ponyville.  Some of them got poison-joked along the way. When affected by poison joke, Fern floated when inhaling, and descended when exhaling.  This caused all sorts of problems, but they were eventually resolved. In Ponyville nopony remembered Fern-she had been gone so long that all those who might had either died or moved away. With nowhere left to go and with a crush on a member of the team named Silver (which she grew out of), she decided to join the band of mercenaries who had rescued her-perhaps she could be helpful. As such, she attended a party hosted by some suspiciously ageless ponies with the team. These ponies, of course, turned out to be vampires, and one member of the team, an ageless old lich named Necrosis offended them and they swore revenge.  Also at the party was a young inventor fascinated by pegasus wings named Hex who had a large pet spider. After the party devolved into a brawl, he also decided to join the team and traveled with them on their airship, the Retribution, but not before helping Fern find a fix for a terrible headache she’d gotten at the party.

Unfortunately for Fern, her troubles were not at an end.  By unfortunate circumstances, a power was awakened inside Hex which transformed him into a hulking beast.  During this transformation, Fern was transformed into a filly due to collateral damage.  Feeling somewhat responsible and being soft deep down, the lich cared for her during this time. Meanwhile the Hex Beast escaped the airship to an island, where the team followed to stop him.  In the process of stopping Hex, Silver was lost forever, which removed any chance of Fern getting together with him, which was probably for the best.

As Fern and the group traveled back from the island aboard the Retribution, the old lich managed to reverse the spell and return her to her correct age.  With his wealth of experience he helped her to adapt to her new life and they grew close, enhanced by the time he had spent caring for her as a father figure.  The lich (who by nature of age knew the princesses personally) adopted Fern.  For the first time in her memory she had a family-for it turned out that Digi was a distant relative of Necrosis and therefore a cousin as well.  The lich, of course, took them both to meet the princesses-Fern was terrified.

At the same time a young pegasus mare raised by dragons due a dragon soul came aboard and joined the team.  Her name was Featherwing.  Because Hex had been kind to her and because of her rough upbringing she saw Fern as a romantic threat and decided to eliminate her.  Due to Fern’s relationship with the lich, Featherwing nearly paid the ultimate price for attempting this, but an injured Fern intervened and she was spared.  Unable to justify continued attacks on someone who had saved her life, Featherwing decided Fern could no longer be considered an enemy but both were uncertain as to how they should act around each other after and avoided each other.

During the next mission in an underground science facility deep below a remote lake, Fern and Hex were separated from the group and had to spend a good deal of time together.  Fern turned out to be an accomplished fighter with non-standard weaponry, and both she and Hex were injured and cared for by the other in turn.  Hex developed feelings for Fern, but Fern saw him only as a brother in arms at the time and told him so without knowledge of said feelings.  When the mission was complete, they both had a great deal to think about.

i just see them as friends! i don't really think shadow could mentor silver very much since both of their abilities are very different, though i really like the idea that he's helping silver learn how to garden :]

i think the closest thing they have to a "traditionally familial" relationship is shadow being a grandpa who likes to sit on silver's porch and say cryptic shit

Really wanted to do a very rough mockup of what Kiahti's bison pal, Fern. European bison have been domesticated in Kieran's world and fill the niche of horses in society. They're used as work animals but get spoiled rotten once they reach an old age. Most domesticated bison have white splashes on them, generally around the face, but they're never colored like your classic dairy cow. Fern has a bit more white on her than you generally see.
