#female integration

Mary Putnam's dissatisfaction with the college [Female Medical College of Pennsylvania] and her troubled departure ultimately worked to her advantage, for it convinced her of the necessity of a European education. Putnam appreciated the guidance of her leading mentor at the school, Emeline Horton Cleveland. She admired Cleveland, calling her a woman of "real ability" who had received a real education in Paris. Cleveland's influence on Putnam was significant, planting the seed for her to expand her education in France. But her short stay in Philadelphia clarified her intellectual expectations and exposed her to the disadvantages of female institutions. Despite all of the efforts by the faculty to reform the Female Medical College, Putnam believed that the regular institutions for men had higher standards, and that only integration - not separatism - could provide women with a true scientific way of life. The Philadelphia experience, and her thesis, provided her with an opportunity to differentiate herself from other women students, and even some of her male instructors. It also introduced her to a new method for measuring the quality of American medical education, as European medicine became her yardstick.

I just really wanna talk about eggs in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
SPOILERS for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes below.
Tumblr media
Ok, so ya know how in the beginning Noa has to find an egg of his own for his hunting ceremony the next day?
But unfortunately, as Mae tries to escape, she shoves against him and she breaks his egg?
Spoiler images below. You have been warned!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eggs have a lot of symbolic meanings. They often represent life, fertility, and rebirth.
Broken eggs can also have different meanings, both good and bad. It can be considered a bad omen. A loss of life.
But they can also mean a sign of change and new beginnings. Noa's broken egg is the reason why he goes out in the middle of the night, which leads to him finding Proximus' apes, which leads to them finding his horse, which then leads the apes to Noa's village.
A broken egg can also symbolize a transformation and breaking out of one's shell. Think of a baby chick breaking out of its egg for the first time and transforming into something new.
Oh, and do you guys know what Lightning calls Noa?
"Welcome home, baby bird."
And I think it's interesting that it's Mae who breaks his egg. She is the start of his change. She shattered the protective shell around him and his world, and yeah, it sucks and it brings a lot of pain, but this breaking of his shell means the ending of one chapter of his life and the start of a new one. Their paths are intertwined and they will be each other's catalysts.

The right to bodily integrity, like all human rights, is non negotiable.
It cannot be applied just in-part, or in some areas, or to only certain members of society.
It cannot be superseded by any religious faith, nor by the wish of a parent, women’s preferences, or by cultural expectations.
The right to one’s body, belongs to the individual.
No “ifs” or “buts”, no asterisks, and no compromises.
Much of the modern world has come to understand this when it comes to girls’ bodies, as FGM continues to be criminalised and rightly punished, falling out of favour, and slowly into the history books.
In most countries FGM is universally illegal, no matter the extent, or context.
Even just a prick is forbidden, because really, the extent of violation needn’t matter, if that procedure is being done on an unconsenting baby.
But not for boy babies.
And I don’t care what people say about circumcision’s so-called “medical or hygienic benefits”, because the medical benefits are virtually non-existent, and we don’t cut off body parts to avoid cleaning them.
Do we cut off our head to stop us getting dandruff?
What about lopping off our feet to rid the world of athletes’ foot?
I mean, why not go the whole way, and cut off the whole penis, if you’re not a fan of cleaning it?
The fact is, there are very few good enough reasons to remove half the nerve endings of a baby boy’s penis, as well as its most sensitive parts.
There is no reason to subject a boy to the risk of erectile dysfunction, desensitisation, PTSD, sexually transmitted disease, or even death…
No reason to tie a baby boy’s limbs down, and as he screams, slice away at his penis, without anaesthesia.
Nobody’s first few days of life should be welcomed by that, and no journey of parenthood should begin with child abuse.
So when will we treat circumcision with the same universality as FGM, where we say “no”, regardless of the severity, scale, or context?
When will a boys bodily integrity supersede religious faith?
When will we give our boys the same rights as girls?
When will we ban infant male circumcision?

Baby boys can and do succumb as a result of having their foreskin removed. Circumcision-related mortality rates are not known with certainty; this study estimates the scale of this problem. This study finds that approximately 117 neonatal circumcision-related deaths (9.01/100,000) occur annually in the United States, about 1.3% of male neonatal deaths from all causes. Because infant circumcision is elective, all of these deaths are avoidable. This study also identifies reasons why accurate data on these deaths are not available, some of the obstacles to preventing these deaths, and some solutions to overcome them.

#Shitpost#My art#Wander Over Yonder#Fist Fighter#Lol#As high-effort as I'm willing to put in to make it appear low-effort <3#Initially based on my silly little Fist Fighter OC(?) with a crush on Peepers - he's already started to morph a bit#Peepers might be a bit too high a station to pursue - shoot for the stars and all that!#But just by the sheer number of Fist Fighters and Watchdogs there's statistically gotta be one apiece that mesh well#And there's nothing that says he couldn't have a crush on Peepers to start! Kind of an ''Oh shit I guess some Watchdogs are kinda cute''#Until that slowly congeals into ''Wait no most of the Watchdogs are pretty cute actually.......uh oh'' lol#If he's gonna stick around he needs a name tho hmmm#Kinda tossing around Keith but I'd like to pull up some references to verbally-named Watchdogs first#That's another thing I've been thinking about - from my recollection/what I've seen in rewatching -#It seems like all the Watchdogs have either masculine or unisex names and are shown to be at least visually understood as male#And depending on how Word Of God you wanna go Craig McCracken has confirmed there are female Watchdogs on their home planet but like#There are feminine names /on/ Wander's list for the Giftening 2 but we only see them sneaking onto the Skullship!#Yes those are almost certainly staff-and-loved-ones Easter eggs >:P Do I care? Am I still going to integrate it into my HCs? Take a guess |D#And anyway that's Just the Watchdogs - unfortunately Awesome's force aren't really seen often enough to get names :(#Hell just finding a speaking line of theirs was a rare treat haha ♪ Up until then I almost thought they were mute!#Seems redundant because like - Bring Back WOY first of all of - but more Fist Fighters! They're too cute!

Yorgos Lanthimos is a prick who makes below mediocre movies and everyone eats it up because people can't seem to differentiate good from pretentious filmmaking.

theres been a discussion of reeves vs nolan take on selina recently. someone said the nolan one was better and theyre currently getting dogpiled.. what is your take on whos better?
nolan unequivocally. i feel like people get caught up in nolan selina’s occasional sexy lines (which are cringe and i do dislike, to be clear) as a means to discredit the character altogether despite the fact that there’s so much emphasis put on selina having agency and liberty to do as she chooses, which is a quintessential aspect of her dynamic with bruce. he disapproves of her actions and methods at times but he respects her personhood and he doesn’t make choices for her bc obv he doesn’t have a right to but she would also never allow him to. their dynamic in the dark knight rises is great bc it is holistically predicated on a respect for her decisions, her bitterness, and her compassion. i do think there are other criticisms you can make as to how nolan selina sort of subtly reinforces the propaganda of the trilogy; i do not have the link at the moment but when reeves’s batman came out there was a youtuber who made a video comparing reeves selina to nolan selina and talked about how the latter’s whiteness did play into her ability to escape confinement and consequences easily, which when you juxtapose against the racism driving nolan’s casting and the recent shift to acknowledge selina as a potentially biracial character, can spark valid concerns as to limiting the potential class commentary she was actually capable of as a character (and i will address this later with respect to reeves selina). but that valid criticism aside my preference for nolan selina has to do with maintaining her character and relationship integrity, which to me is the most impt thing you can do in an adaptation. if the plot and circumstances will change, what you should at least try to do is maintain the core of the character, and nolan does that marvelously with selina and bruce (likely bc dixon, whose work the nolan movies are largely adapted from, actually tended to write these two well)
now, obv with reeves selina a huge reason for supporting her in comparison is the racial visibility, esp when you, again, consider why nolan originally rejected zoe for the role in his movies. and i do think that’s highly valid and frankly i want non-white selina, bc it makes her contentions with and distrust of the state as established in catwoman (1989) that much more palpable and worthwhile to explore. but a racebended casting doesn’t automatically do the work for you and there’s still a character integrity you have to maintain. and i think this is something not only reeves but dc writers at large tend to understand poorly. there’s so much racebending happening in comics these days and i do think it’s a useful vehicle but not as it’s actually used in practice. the changes are superficial rather than going to the root of the character. so i personally find reeves selina to be a huge insult to the character, bc rather than use that racebending as an opportunity to expand on selina and her hardline opposition to bruce and the state, it’s not really used to do much at all (which honestly can likely be attributed to the fact that everyone involved in making this script and plot was white!) and selina is instead regressed from what she was in the comic that reeves’s take on her was based on. catwoman (1989) and catwoman (1993) for that matter are huge novelties in selina’s history bc they are near insularly focused on her. we play by her rules and everyone else in the picture is a reactionary. the reeves movie turns this on its head bc now selina is subservient to bruce’s arc and to his decisions. he dictates what she does until she’s finally fed up with it, which we’re supposed to applaud despite the fact that bruce does nothing short of condescend to her and victim-blame a sex worker, and bc he ultimately saves her from her anger in the end so it’s romantic. the romance is the priority throughout the entire movie. there are brief moments of selina’s rebellion but as a whole she has no control over her arc bc bruce’s arc comes first. i also think the final scene where she says “the bat and the cat. has a nice ring to it” (or whatever it was, close enough) to be a complete misunderstanding of their dynamic at its inception. this movie purportedly based its selina on mindy newell’s work but somehow fails to recognize that mindy newell’s selina expressly disdained the idea of being associated with batman bc her independence and defiance was the entire point. even if you want to argue their dynamic in the movie is a reflection of what it has become in the comics now, those are depicting bruce and selina’s relationship with each other more than twenty years after they first met. it makes no sense to make selina so amenable to bruce in the beginning bc it completely undercuts the fact that she’s right in her class stance from the start. and it also seems to reiterate the prevalent misconception that for a romance to work between bruce and selina she has to soften her edges and anger, despite those being the exact things that made bruce attracted to and sympathetic of her

I really hate brazilian LGBT organizations that include q for queer in their pamphlets, materials, etc bc like that's not our term, no one in this country has ever been called a queer and before the internet nobody called themselves that and materially is not a term that means anything to brazilian lgbt history and struggles

Idk exactly what went down with Darla in this show (though I do have a vague idea), but I can say they clearly did her wrong.
#she should have been in it til the end and it's a fucking crime she wasn't#darla is a captivating character and i can see so much potentional for truly amazing storylines there#and much as i love shamelessly evil darla giving angel someone to grow alongside with would have done so much for his character#but i gather darla got the same treatment as literally every other female character on this show#sacrificed at the altar of manpain#and aside from darla deserving better#julie benz is truly a treasure of an actress#she deserved a long run and possibly a spin off#ats#darla#it's a bit early and i've changed my mind several times on angel pairings - but i think angel x darla is my ats otp for him#like my stance so far has largely landed on cookie dough!angel because it's hard to see him as functional in a relationship#but the goddamn potential of this wow#also how much cooler would this show have been if instead of...whatever kind of nonsense i hear they did to poor cordy#the storyline in between big bads/wolfram & hart nonsense focused on healing angel's past#growth for darla and dru then spike in s5#coming back together in a new way#it's a very poorly formed concept for me#but essentially the vibe is instead of angel continually fighting to kill his past he reconciles with it#allows it to connect with his new life and integrates the disjointed pieces of himself into one imperfect whole#jeez five minutes of screentime for darla and i'm crafting essays in my tags 😆#2x05 dear boy

this is old news but i am so glad paget brewster accidentally exposed the lies of the ducktales crew (mostly frank angones and matt whateverberg). they lied so much about the finale being “planned from the start” and that they “”knew”” that season 3 was their last season. continuinally said it wasn’t cancelled to everyone on twitter, but i always knew better. it basically was cancelled bc they weren’t renewed for a season 4, idk why they are so butt-hurt to admit it. i love my ducks, but ducktales genuinely left me so bitter because of everything (rushed ending, so many loose ends, bloated cast, events happening off-screen having to rely on word of god for way too many important events, and so much more). i don’t trust those men and i hope their egos were bruised from this news being released. ducktales was so great, but they fumbled the bag so much that i don’t even want to rewatch it anymore. thank god duck fans have comics and 86 years worth of donald duck content to enjoy.
