hey there! i dont know if you already explain it or not, but can i know the bridgerton profession/what they currently do in your bridgerton text au? maybe even for upcoming character👀? thank you for answering and i hope you have a splendid day!!!
yes of course! and i truly apologize for taking ages to answer this –
simon was a midfielder for arsenal, and a little while after he retires from the team, he goes on to coach ⚽️ daphne is a school social worker (violet is the head of a huge uk educational non-profit, and daphne initially thought she wanted to follow in those footsteps, but then realized she wanted to work in schools and be more directly involved with helping students who needed support)
kate is a florist! she owns a cozy shop along cobb street called "once and floral" and brings newton into work every day 🥰 anthony is a barrister, specializing in civil liberties & human rights cases (which is exactly what edmund did – he was a guiding force for anthony, who was in his second year of university when edmund passed. edmund was also a relatively high-profile barrister, whose work was often covered in the news, which is part of why the bridgertons are prominent enough as a family to earn mentions in whistledown) sophie – before she met benedict again, she was waitressing and trying to save enough to go back to school. she eventually attends veterinary school, as she really loves working with animals 🐈 benedict was aimlessly working as a paralegal for several years (while quietly working on his art on the side, though without the intention of showing it to anyone else). inspired by sophie, he also eventually goes back to school so he can focus on his passion 🎨
colin worked with nat geo for a long time, starting out as a freelancer and eventually becoming a full-time photo editor for them. it often kept him out of london for most of the year, but by the time he hits 33, he's gotten bored with what he's doing, and decides he'll find something else so he can come back home penelope is a junior copy editor at danbury publishing house! though sometimes, if you see her typing at her computer, she's not necessarily working on proofreading manuscripts 🤔
eloise is a software engineer! sometimes, though, when she's writing emails, people think she's just on github 👩‍💻 pippa crane is a professor of ecology and environmental science at the university of gloucestershire (she's also recently divorced from eloise's cousin, marina, with whom she shares two kids)
francesca is a music supervisor for film! (she started out relatively young, but she got a leg up because her aunt billie is also in the film industry) michael is an actor! at the time of francesca's wedding to john, he's mostly doing theater, but his agent soon convinces him to start going out for film/tv. he does pretty well for himself, and a little after john dies from a aneurysm, he decides he's going to up and move to los angeles because it'd be better for his career (or so he says that's the reason for the move) (john, who was very into numbers, was an accountant. he knew he could do that anywhere, and told francesca he’d go wherever she wanted to go).
hyacinth works at danbury publishing house as well, on the marketing side of things! (she's very stumped when it comes time to market a book called miss butterworth and the mad baron). she starts out working there mostly because felicity took an internship at the publishing house while they were in university together, and it was kind of an excuse for them to goof off together a few hours a week gareth, at the time we meet him, is doing his postgraduate studies at UCL in civil engineering; he comes into danbury publishing offices every once in a while to see his grandmother (which is how he often winds up running into hyacinth)
gregory... doesn't know what he wants to do, but he works as a substitute teacher for secondary school. on the side, he also coaches miles' football team (their team name is the thunderbolts – name pitched by miles ⚡) lucy happens to work with mary sharma (as does lucy's colleague and best friend hermione). both lucy and hermione are primary school teachers 🍎
that's it for all the main characters! in terms of side characters ~
alice and will were simon's publicist and trainer, respectively. after simon retires, will decides to move on from athletics and opens up his own bar 😎
mary is a primary school headmistress. edwina is shooting for a post doc in philosophy, and a little while after kate and anthony get married, she meets a nice girl named jyoti, who kate and mary both adore.
posy, after reconnecting with sophie, gets inspired by her stepsister and goes on to become a nurse. benedict's friend group is a bunch of people he went to uni with – henry and lucy granville have the same last name because they're adopted siblings. henry manages an art gallery, and lucy is a pottery instructor. genevieve delacroix owns a bridal store, and wetherby is a medical sales rep (which is why he's the only friend benedict couldn't necessarily go to to ask for help for sophie)
philipa, same as daphne, gets married relatively young, and is a stay-at-home mother. prudence works at a jeweler’s, felicity is into graphic design, and portia is a big name in commercial real estate!
thank you for asking, because i have this in my head but not all the details make themselves known via text message exchanges 😆 so this was nice to write out! (to the person who sent this, i'm so sorry it took me so long to sit down and do this, but if you're reading, i hope you have a splendid day as well 💖)

So grown Hyacinth is shallow and vapid just like Penelope but one is your thing and the other isn't? Just curious, what makes you dislike one and like the other?
We obviously have a very different definition of shallow and vapid anon.
As I said and I will say it again, as a secondary character Hyacinth is wonderful, she's cute, bubbly and pops up every once in a while to remind other characters to lighten up. As a stand alone heroine. She was disappointing.
In RMB Penelope is shown to be caring towards other people's feelings outside of Colin's, such as Eloise and Felicity for example. And if we're talking about the show she's still shown to care about Eloise, Marina and even her mother despite having very realistic self esteem problems that cause friction for her with those characters.
Book Penelope's thoughts might seem to revolve around Colin but she has a life outside of him. She writes, she reads, she's got a healthy appreciation for good food, and despairs a bit over Felicity finding a good match. If there is one character that's aware of the flaws of human nature and the shallowness of the ton, that's Penelope.
Although my award for lack of shallowness usually goes to Sophie who's very much aware of the Ton's hipocrisy because she's a victim of it and doesn't condone it. Penelope comes close second.
Do not compare Penelope's brand of vapid with Hyacinth's because Penelope's are jus-ti-fied. Both by her upbringing and the way the ton has treated over the years. She is completely justified in those moments she's kind of b*ch.
Hyacinth is NOT. Because unlike Penelope, Hyacinth grew up with a supportive mother, a loving family and the acceptance of the ton. Her beauty was never in question nor her character as a person (nobody ever considered Hy dull or not interesting enough to dance with). Hyacinth in the context of the book doesn't have a reason to be so dismissive of other people, even her siblings or to care so little about their opinion of her. She's capable of admitting her flaws but unlike Penelope and every other Bridgerton heroine, she doesn't seem inclined to do anything about them!
At least Penelope eventually apologized to Colin about sending in the last LW paper and grew the f up.
Also, other than reading Miss Butterworth and the mad Baron, tell me if Hyacinth has a life outside of Gareth in the events of 'it's in his kiss'. There seems to be conflict on Gareth's side and there's definitely some high stakes for him, he does eventually learn and grow. But Hyacinth doesn't have any stakes, no conflict pushing her to improve her flaws or become a better person. She reads as someone who is perfectly fine acting like a teenager and has no intention of learning to behave like an adult.
And don't get me started on how she was during 'on the way to the wedding' because Hyacinth just reads as someone who had a lot of growing up to do and never quite managed it.
In conclusion I'm okay with Penelope's vapid moments because she's justified in having them. She's not a shallow person and doesn't read as such. Hyacinth isn't justified in her moments of vapidness because nobody has ever given her a reason to be. And she does come off as a shallow person because her character arc didn't feel properly wrapped up at the end of her book.
Julia had a lot of good intentions with this character, Hyacinth could have been so much better with a little bit of work and that's why I've always felt kinda robbed with her. I wanted more for Hy and just got too little.
But oh well, that's what fanfiction writers are for. I'm sure that by the time her season rolls around Netflix will give her the depth she deserves as a heroine.

Miss Butterworth and the mad Baron

No 21 Song Recital
This album is part of the Wigmore Hall Live series; released in 2005, this must be one of the first ones to have come out. I can’t actually remember what my first live Wigmore Hall gig was, but I seem to remember the awed excitement of being there. I have seen Allen perform there twice, one with Felicity Lott and once as celebration of his 70th birthday - it wasn’t said anywhere aloud, but my seat neighbour and I both thought that is was also his farewell performance at that venue. Malcolm Martineau played for both of those gigs.

On this disc there’s a selection of German Lied and selection of poems from the Shropshire Lad. A.E. Housman’s poetry collection was published almost twenty years before the Great War, but is another thing that has become associated with the homesickness the British soldiers felt fighting on foreign soil.
Allen has picked a number of poets he reads between the Butterworth’s songs, opening with The Land of Lost Content:
Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows: What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.
Housman wrote it living in London, (a city was nicknamed Smoke), its air thick with soot from the coal used for fuel, and sulphur dioxide, among other pollutants; it is no wonder that his mind turned to the green hills and clear air of the Midlands.
Allen has completely owned everything he has sang, but the connection he makes to these English songs (there’s also some Vaughan Williams and Bridge on this disc) feels much stronger than the one to the Beethoven and Wolf; I think this is also audible in the audience reactions - polite but restrained, followed by enthusiasm for the Vaughan Williams.
I have two favourite tracks on this album - no 13, the reading of the poem above, and no 24, Vaughan Williams’ Let Beauty Awake, a great interpretation of this song.
Songs by Beethoven, Wolf, Butterworth, Vaughan Williams and Bridge Sir Thomas Allen (baritone), Malcolm Martineau (piano)
