Note: monsters are small and play the roles of fayfolk like brownies, goblins, ect. within the household.

When Rus awoke, it was to the sound of the window latch.

That was curious.

The small monster opened his eyes and slowly sat up from his rest. The fire was burning low and the lights were out.

It wasn't like the human to wander in the dark.

Bringing his attention towards the window, Rus was just in time to see a rather thick set skeleton monster in red clamber inside before letting the latch click shut with magic once more.

"Your climbing skills need work, Brother." The voice to the right of the window was grating.

It was like a steel nib on a chalkboard, the owner still hidden in shadow. The visable monster, still breathing hard with the effort of climbing, growled back.

"Wouldn't need them if I hadn't use up all my magic tryin' to find ya." his voice was lower with more of a rumble than a screech.

He drew himself up, his annoyance fading as he took in his surroundings

"Lookit, Boss this place is just like in the stories. A fire in the center room" his gaze turned to the counter he now stood on, particularly at the glasses sitting out to dry by the sink. "Breakables left out and unattended"

"Red, don't you dare!"

Rus shrank down in his hiding place as the other monster stepped back into the moonlit window.

He was taller and while he wore similar clothing to his counterpart, his were much better kept. In turn this sharp individual scanned the room pausing every now and then to consider different objects.

"It needs work, "he said, finally. "but this human may not be too incompetent."

At that moment a glass tumbled off the counter to smash against the worn wooden floor.

"I'll make sure ta keep them on their toes, Boss." chuckled the shorter.

"With your deplorable manners, how could you not? Come, let's inspect the fireplace!" The taller said, leaping down from the counter.

The other laughed before appearing by the chairs in the next blink.

Rus narrowed his eyes.

The two began surveying the area just below where Rus was watching from his corner beam. The armchairs stood tall yet inviting back away from the flagstones of the hearth.

Everything glowed with the faint crimson of the coals and small licks of flame that still lingered in the firebox.

Just as the shorter reached for the small wooden chair, Rus made his move.

Blink.

"Red, Don't ." The taller one ordered in a tone that told Rus all he needed to know.

He met both of their crimson gazes with his own bottomless violet one.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." His voice was raspy, like autumn leave or the whisper of a straw broom on worn floorboards.

For a long moment no one moved.

Only when the shorter of the two lowered his hand, did Rus finally stand down. Warning heeded, he disappeared once more from sight; a wave of exhaustion washing over him almost as soon as he did so.

For the rest of the night His chair was left alone, though as Rus closed his eyes once more to nap he knew for certain the same could not be said for the kitchen. Their human had her work cut out for her.
