No one is 100% good or bad. We're a unique mix of both. And beneath us all, a beast lurks within, bearing our darkest and most taboo desires. You can never fully tame it—only at a limit. And those who do tame it tend to repress those primal urges. And the more they deny it—the more its claws scratch through the surface of their flesh through projections. The best way to manage that beast is to integrate it with your master. A balance of both is highly recommendable. Use the beast to assert yourself in situations where people talk you down to avoid being a doormat and the master when you need to stay calm in circumstances that expect reactions from you. That way, the beast and master in you can work hand in hand to make you whole. After all, there is no light without darkness.

As the Sun sets on the autumn equinox, we contemplate the dark and light within ourselves. We don’t exist without both. We are matter and spirit, married alchemically. When was the last time you checked in with your light to make sure it was burning bright. How long has it been since you journeyed into the dark depth of yourself? Does one of these selves need validation? Does one owe the other an apology? How can the parts of ourselves we hide help the parts of ourselves we show the world? Can one offer support for the other or show up when the other one needs help? We each contain a legion of angels and demons at our side willing to fight for what we believe in. Our shadow is only the shadow because we won’t let it be part of our lives. The light is only what people see, we are the lens through which is projected. It is even a little fantastic and surrealistic picture, because it is a little unreal, as if the starry sky is mixed with the sunlight that has penetrated to the very bottom of the cave lake. This is my very early work from when I was a student. This picture has a difficult fate and some damage from time to time. This is one of the pictures from my past, when inspiration came to me with sunlight that suddenly burst into my room, driving even the most impenetrable darkness away from me. WEEK 3 Monday Workshops

Camera staging with Tutor Paul Tarpey

Even though the first two pictures are not entirely abstract or experimental, I choose these pictures because they show the background to taking photographs in a staged setting.

I like that the ring light is the focus in picture one but we still get a gentle out of focus image of the person.

We were tasked with using many fun objects, coloured paper and use of lighting. This workshop was very enjoyable and I was just starting to play more when the time had come to an end.

Honouring it all Your experience cannot be broken down into good or bad. Because there is no bad that isn’t also somehow for your ultimate good. Life is duality. The contrast is what helps us understand and differentiate between things. We understand and value light because we know darkness. Joy is sweeter because we’ve experienced sadness. Play is important because we spend so much of our energy on work. Beauty is essential because it is a direct contrast to death and decay. It sounds dramatic, sure, but the dualistic nature of human existence is what adds colour to our lives. Trust when I say that if things were actually as perfect as we constantly wish they were that we’d not only be bored AF but we’d be out here creating drama just for something to do… Humans are weird like that! So can you truly honour it all? Can you hold space for the ENTIRETY of your being and your experience?
