HOW DID I MISS THIS??? I'd wait to answer this tomorrow to be another Worldbuilding Wednesday, but I don't want to! Thank you for the ask! For this one, I'm choosing to go with my Crown of Blood WIP, since it's one of the few that I actually have kind of a plan for AND isn't just IRL casual clothes, lol.

For Crown of Blood, it widely varies by region, as well as social class, but most if it is medieval era Western (and East Asian!) clothing. I don't really know how to explain the fusion quite yet, but basically for Adrasteia specifically, she has a wider range because she's literally royalty and can therefore afford import costs. Her outfits range widely from more standard traditional clothes to clothes that have a fusion in terms of cuts and patterns. Skirts that wrap and tie, but are shaped kind of western, etc. Think some of the fancier clothing in Meiji period Japan as well as the mutual Eastern influences on Edwardian England and France.

There's an article about it on "lilyabsinthe.com", and while I don't know the validity or full accuracy of these claims, either way I liked the idea and want to explore it more. I've seen more modern examples of ideas online, of people mixing traditional and kinda modern pieces that I like, but I unfortunately don't have any on hand (it is VERY messy in my phone lol). But I'll leave it here because it's getting WAY too long haha.

The commoners/less obscenely wealthy, I'm thinking of a few ideas for. I initially was curious about the idea of clothing similar to some minority subgroups (I was particularly fascinated with Ainu and Nivkh clothing), but then I realized that might come across as insensitive/sending a bad message, etc. So I think I'll leave that for another story. My current idea is to have either medieval western clothing or even older East Asian clothes, though I haven't 100% decided which one is better/simpler etc. I'll have to determine the weather first. Obviously since this is an empire, there are definitely other cultures and societies that all make up the bigger entity. So they're not going to all have the same clothes, even amongst commoners if they're from different regions.

I think I'll have to determine the weather/terrain and culture of the regions first. The main hub of the empire is kinda woodsy with various bodies of water (but no ocean), so they might traditionally opt for tighter fit clothing- but I mean, Europe had plenty of forests, and people still wore long skirts, so... maybe I'm just trying too hard!

This is DEFINITELY too long now so I'll cut it here! Basically I've no clue yet, but I'm really fascinated by the idea of a fusion! Thanks again for the ask!

Merthings usually wear pajamas all day! This will be explained further when I make my devilish and terrifying thread about merthings. To keep it short, merthings are cold blooded, and need all the warmth they can get! Another reason is the fact that despite being sapient, merthings are still prey animals to the terrible mermaids, and tend to be constantly in fear and off guard, pajamas are just soft enough and soothing enough to ease some of that anxiety! Merthings are also much more sensitive to touch, and have overactive nervous systems in comparison to humans on account of having multiple brains! Pajamas are soft, and more pleasant to the touch than other clothing items. Such fascinating creatures!

My first ask on this account?? 🥹

It's a little tough to think about this w/ the OCB characters, because they're gonna mainly be cosplaying throughout the series. So they're "normal" fashion won't even be seen, really. 😅 But if I really think about it:

- Kiki is a complete pastel alt girl. More pastel (mainly pink) than alt as she'll wear anything bright & loud w/ color. A striped pink & white t-shirt and a black high-waist skirt w/ suspenders. Throw in a choker and some bright stockings too! It just matches w/ her cheery personality, and puts more emphasis on her sweetness.

- La'Rae is like dark academia but edgy. If cosplaying wasn't a huge part of the restaurant norm, I could see her in a crop top (somewhat covered by a flannel), ripped jeans, and fishnet gloves just to match the required hair net. 🤭 I always imagine La'Rae in soft hues of orange, brown, burgundy, and black. And with a long coat for some reason lol. Sorry if that explains nothing LOOL

These are bound to change since I'm in the early phase of writing only. Every other character's style is either unknown or most likely not considered interesting...? 😅 Jay is white academia w/ denim.... Idk how else to explain that lol. Akachi is extra casual - graphic tees & polo shirts. Kay looks completely alt, but all I know is he's always only in black 99% of the time. Idk about Youngheun, Kodak, and Dahye at all yet. 🥲

Since I love fashion, I think most of my characters wear interesting clothing choices. I'm even in the process of drawing each major nations/regions' traditional garbs.

Hence, I'll just pick an outlier.

This is a doodle I made for reference.

Lyarshu had a different mage outfit* tailored for his graduation. He hoped to honor the culture of his people, the Verdants of the Emerald Kingdom, through this outfit. He argued long and hard about this with his assigned seamstress, who by academy rules had to add some required mage aesthetics (the most important of which is the hood).

On the day of the event, he ran into a situation, had to play hero, saved the day, and attended his graduation in what seemed like torn rags. Thankfully, one of the people he helped during the aforementioned situation helped him sew back his outfit together. Hence, his fit sorely stands out from most other mages... once you get used to the natural eccentricity of mages.

Art of Heartwood's Three Idiots when they were his age for reference:

*Mages who graduate from Heartwood Academy get to have their first outfits as licensed magic users tailored by local seamstresses to their liking, as long as it isn't against academy guidelines. Such outfits are made from different subtypes of magiweave fiber, a type of textile that holds a stronger** form of magic to help mages with their everyday escapades, such as infinite storage space and added resistance against magic.

**In some of the popular theories of magic, everything in Orbis contains/possesses magic forces. But this is a discussion for another day.

I'm sorry that there isn't much worldbuilding here as there is story, but concept-wise I struggled so much with Lyarshu's design that I forgot to add actual lore into consideration.

Oh! My first Worldbuilding Wednesday!!

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to talk about my world much, I've been so busy with other projects that it keeps slipping my mind. ^^" I'm also still conceptualizing my world's cultures, so I can't speak on any specific ways of dress right now.

That being said, I have thrown in a fun little fashion thing when designing my characters. If a character is important to my world's lore, they'll have a swirl design somewhere on their person. Sybil, one of the most famous doctors in my world's history, has a piece of jade in the shape of a spiral dangling from their hair stick. Renowned scholar Redmund keeps his hair neatly tucked into a side ponytail using an amber twist that curls into spirals at both ends, and his apprentice, Orien, boasts a swirl design on his necktie.

Why swirls? The in-lore reason is because the gods have filigree-like swirl markings that adorn their bodies. This delicate pattern upon their fur and scales has - due to its uniqueness - become a well-known symbol of the divine. Now, these characters don't don spirals because religious significance (though that could very well be true in some scenarios!). Rather, this fashion choice is more subconscious. It's fate's way of marking those destined to change the course of history for better or for worse.

Out-of-lore reason? I like the way it looks!

Magic users in Mortal Sparks tend to find themselves wearing particular colors in association with their magic type. This is an in-world excuse to make Alyss wear black at all times. She is a fire witch, and her clothes are all either black or dark colored so that ash doesn't show up as much. It is also common in Mortal sparks for people, especially women, to wear gloves, but again as a fire witch, Alyss cannot. Or rather, she can, but she would go through them at a ridiculous rate. Alyss stands out as well because, as a former soldier, she prefers to wear trousers and shirts rather than dresses.
