My post op appointment went well! The incisions have closed well and are looking healthy. My nipple grafts are attached and have blood flow. Unfortunately the mirror wasn’t at wheelchair height so I didn’t get a proper look but my surgeon showed me on my phone which wasn’t quite as good of a look but I could see enough to know that it looks really good.
After I got my dressings off my surgeon put micropore over my long incision scar (my incisions meet in the centre of my chest to make one long scar) and I got square dressings for my nipple grafts. Because I use a chest harness in my wheelchair I’ll have to keep dressings over my nipples until all the scabs have fallen away which could be a couple of months off. (Usually the dressings only need to stay on for about 24 hours)
My surgeon was really good with all his recommendations. He fully explained his reasons for each and let me know what the consequences might be if I didn’t follow each one: which ones were cosmetic, about avoiding infection, speeding up healing etc. He also told me which recommendations were based on research and which were based on more anecdotal evidence. He gave me the information to make my own decisions in a way that wasn’t rushed, patronising or performative.
We talked for quite a bit about my post op binder. I was really hoping he’d just say I didn’t need to wear it any more but there’s still a bit of fluid under the skin on one side and he felt I needed to wear it 12 hrs a day for another two weeks.
I was concerned because I’ve had some skin breakdown because of it already and was worried about that becoming worse/ infected (because the binder is gross and has to be washed by hand at a low temperature and my skin is delicate).
He was really good at neutrally explaining how the compression vest works and what would happen if I didn’t wear it (potential for further fluid build up and my skin becoming stretched) He also let me know if I chose to wear it that I could wear it over my pyjama t shirt to protect my skin without affecting how well it works.
In the end I’m following his advice but he was probably the best doctor I’ve met at describing the reasons behind a recommendation without putting on unnecessary pressure to blindly follow it.
Overall he’s been a fantastic surgeon who is clearly very skilled in the operating theatre as well as being absolutely amazing at listening and explaining things and making me feel comfortable as well. I’ve had too many bad experiences to ever trust any doctor again, but I completely trust him which I never thought could happen.
For anyone wondering I had surgery on the NHS with the Manchester team and my surgeon was Nick Hobbs. Although you don’t get to chose which member of the team does your surgery, I would recommend the whole team – they have clearly worked very hard to get amazing technique and create the best culture I’ve ever found from a group of doctors. The only downside is the NHS waiting times (I don’t think any of them have a private practice).

it is time for my ranking of Optimus Prime’s parenting skills… which are only semi-serious (at best) and mostly consists of inside jokes. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
1. Starting off strong, G1!Optimus: 7.9/10.
Okay listen, technically speaking he was everyone’s dad BUT he looked like he was about to strangle anyone that wasn’t Bumblebee on more than one occasion, and plus he died :/ which totally wasn’t cool, bc it made my bbg hate himself♥️. and there’s also just like. his treatment of the Dinobots… so. Yikes, king. Points were doxxed xoxo.
2. My personal favorite—Cyberverse!Optimus: 8/10.
I’d give him ten out of ten for being an absolute MILF but he also let’s all three sons be absolute demons and never seems to know where they are, AND gives the impression that he’s locking himself in the pantry and eating a snack just to escape them for a few minutes (https://youtu.be/CHWMIAaUj1M), so sorry babe. being a divorced single mother is never easy, but you look fantastic doing it ((btw he’s PTA parents with Grimlock, but unlike him, he never knows what’s going on)).
3. Honorable mention bc I technically haven’t finished it. Armada!Optimus: 7.9/1
He gives me army dad awkwardly trying to raise a military brat and that’s why it’s so low, bc while he isn’t a terrible parent TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, he’s still in the army and is raising his son in it. like maybe the kid wanted to make art, man. SMH.
4. IDW!Optimus, my beloathed♥️. 5/10.
Bumblebee is the golden child who has never done anything wrong in his entire life in Optimus’ optics, while Rodimus is the estranged son who he only sees on the holidays MAYBE and whom he hates. In fact, I’m doubtful he even likes seeing him that much.
5. #Boymom Prime!Optimus: 9/10
another one who gets points redacted bc did you see him with Smokescreen? that man is a boymom. He believes boys will be boys and posts on cyberbook “I didn’t know love until I looked into my sons’ eyes; ‘til are one; my little rascals are starting cube-ball soon and it’s so tiring driving them everywhere but I wouldn’t have it any other way!! #BoyMom.”
6. Netflix!Optimus: 0/10.
not a parent, boo.
7. Twenty-Three-Old-College-Dropout Animated!Optimus. 2/10.
I give him two points bc he’s more like their older brother, but he also hasn’t straight up killed them so that gives him /some/ bonuses. Bee’s like fourteen, and Bulkhead’s like fifteen, and he’s barely twenty-three living with Prowl who is a HIGH-SCHOOL dropout at twenty-five and is a hippie who smokes a blunt in their garage—and Ratchet is in his mid-seventies and never leaves his room, so you can see why he deserves the two points for not snapping.
8. Earthspark Optimus, ‘the cool dad’: 8.9/10.
He’s delightful and awkward and tries his best, but he’s also obviously overworked and doesn’t always have time to be there emotionally for Bumblebee; he also hates his son’s ex and I’m sure threw a party when him and Breakdown broke up, despite being divorced himself (Elita-1) and having an /interesting/ past himself (Megatron). hope that helps. Still better than IDW.
9. Half-joking, Japanese!Optimus. 10/10.
Idk what’s going on there, but he looks delightful.
10. Optimus Micheal Prime, Bayverse: 1/10.
just the worst parenting my man, somehow even worse than IDW!OP bc atleast he /liked/ Bumblebee. he started really good during the first movie, and then it must q u ick ly derailed. somebody send CPS on his ass.
11. Beeverse!Optimus: 10/10.
watching him go John Wick on the decepticons so Bee could escape? delightful. the fact that he sent him on the “‘safest’” planet in the galaxy? hilarious. the ‘very well’? my favorite op line in all the continuities. also one of his best designs ONG.
12. The man, the myth, the legend - Optimus Primal. 7.9/10.
mostly going off that one gag where they were too scared to tell him they did something wrong, I have built my personal headcanon. I feel like Primal has made Cheetor cry when he helped him with his math homework, and will even beat Rattrap’s grown ass if you catch him in the wrong mood. (he’s literally just this tiktok https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRKX4t93/) ((and it’s definitely cheetor and rattrap)).
13. Finally, the end––RID2002 Optimus Prime: 6/10.
he never knew what was going on, SMHHHH. Wedge fraternizing with Sky-Byte? who knows! he certainly doesn’t. Side-Burn potentially becoming his future-in-law and Just Being Like ThatTM in general? well he never talks to Ultra Magnus anyway, and boys will be boys, amiright? but don’t be fooled, though, I love Car Robots and I would die for all of them. thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

Ok so, I just wanted to kind of pick apart my problems with the Arlong Arc in the Live Action a bit. And I’m going to avoid the whole “needed more time/should have cut some of the marine storyline” complaint and just focus on the details that didn’t quiet work and were kind of baffling.
And I want to reiterate this before I get into it: I loved the Live Action. It was fun and goofy and the passion behind it was palpable. And this isn’t me going “argh, how dare they deign to change anything! I wanted a shot for shot remake! Argh!” No. I’m okay with changes. I love that all we get of Don Kreig is Mihawk humiliating and then killing him because god was he annoying in the anime. Least favorite arc I sat through. Nami’s one on one conversation with Kaya? Fantastic! I’m not even that big of an OP fan, but this kind of made me wish I was.
I just really love the Arlong Arc in the anime (horribly paced fights aside). It’s honestly the only arc I care this much about so I wanted to talk about this.
- Arlong’s Betrayal: Ok, so in the anime Arlong makes it very clear that he will let Nami and Coco Village go once she hands over 100 Million Berry. It’s made explicitly clear that he’s a fishman of his word and that he’d never go back on a deal involving money. And then of course he sends Nezumi to steal Nami’s money once she has it all. Ok. So that’s all pretty much the same in OPLA.
However, in the anime, Arlong does not immediately move to destroy the Village. In fact, when Nami comes charging in after realizing Arlong’s betrayal claiming he broke his word, his reply is “When? When did I go back on our deal exactly?” Because he technically didn’t! And instead of moving to destroy Coco Village, he tells Nami (to paraphrase), “guess you’ll just have to start over with stealing all that money because a deal’s a deal. Oh, and if you think about bailing then I’ll kill everyone in the village.” This way Arlong keeps both his chart maker and he gets to keep extorting the Village. This shows that Arlong is very cunning and slick, as well as a terrifying force.
But, in OPLA, that’s not the case. The fact that Arlong in OPLA is really just going to wipe out the village now that Nami got all that money is so wasteful. And if there was one thing Arlong wasn’t, it was wasteful. If he could use someone he’d do it, provided they paid his fee. Arlong in OPLA, while still a decent threat (the actor does give him some serious presence), he kind of comes across as an idiot.
- Nojiko/Village Knowing: In the anime, we find out very quickly that Nojiko did know about Nami’s deal with Arlong. Little Nami told her sister after they made it, and after Little Nami put on a big show of betraying the village so they wouldn’t go fight and die. The kicker is, when Nezumi comes to take Nami’s money, Genzo reveals that the village also knew about her deal, and pretended to hate her so that she wouldn’t feel bound to come back if she ever decided to leave, to escape Arlong.
Also, because Nojiko knew, she got her tattoos as a sign of solidarity. Little Nami talked about how she hated her tattoo and how it made her feel like Arlong owned her. So Nojiko, being the amazing sister she is, got her tattoos so Nami wouldn’t feel so alone. It was a symbol of their bond. Now in OPLA I guess she just… got tattoos… because they’re cool?
- The lead up to the breakdown: Okay, so this one kind of lends into the “they needed more time” category but also I just wanted to mention this. While I still say Emily Rudd gives the best performance in the series here (my opinion, don’t @ me) and I did feel emotions, I really feel like we needed just that extra smidge more.
We needed that moment where everyone is ready to fight and then Nami walks up, putting on the biggest, most fake smile, ready to absolutely throw herself onto a metaphorical sword again so that everyone she loves won’t run toward their deaths, only for Genzo to pull her into a hug and tell her “it’s okay. You’ve done enough. You’ve carried this burden too long by yourself. The least we can do is try to win our freedom ourselves now, and if we die then… hey, you’ll be free.” So when the Village ignore her pleas to stop and move to basically die, Nami finally just collapses because everything she worked for, everything she spent eight years trying to achieve was all for freakin nothing.
This moment more than anything shows who Nami is at her very core. And it just… doesn’t exist in OPLA.
- Rapid fire, minor complaints that don’t actually ruin anything but I did notice: It is really bizarre that they never say Bellemere’s name out loud. It’s on her grave marker but that’s it.
While I don’t think Nami should have been a baby when Bellemere found her and Nojiko, perhaps just a smidge younger?
The catalyst for the argument in which Bellemere slaps Nami after Nami says they aren’t an actual family. In the anime Nami says this because Bellemere has been skipping meals and only eating tangerines so that she can give all the food to her daughters. Nami’s guilt over that and the fact that she believes if Bellemere didn’t have to look after them she could afford to take care of herself leads into that fight and slap in the anime and it’s Genzo that tells Nami about Bellemere’s backstory after she runs away.
Could have used Nami denying help just a little more when Luffy stops her from stabbing her tattoo. Throwing dirt, telling him to leave, just this horrible last ditch effort before… “Luffy. Help me.”

I'm going to throw the question at you back like a ping pong ball but a bit differently sooo which ones are your top five favorite fanfic tropes :] (also op since you're colombian I think we have the same timezone how are you still awake at this hour...)
Ooo that’s a hard one, ok, well, I like slow burn, I agree w you in that when it goes too fast it just doesn’t feel right, so slow burn for me is fantastic, fake dating is also rly fun, I just love the pining + the angst of having what you want juuuust within reach, domestic fluff is also a favorite of mine! It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure, I just rly enjoy seeing characters I love actually having a good time since they’re normally so miserable, and on the flip sid hurt comfort! The catharsis of it is just sooo good, it’s nice to watch someone breakdown and get built back up again yk?
Also yeah haha. I have school tmr, this is me making terrible choices again LMAOODJDHJE why are YOU awake though? If we have the same timezone

Today on “overthinking this fictional pirate universe”:
The existence of things like the SMILE fruits, as well as the artificial devil fruit Vegapunk made based on Kaido’s devil fruit implies a few very interesting things about said devil fruits and their effects on people’s bodies.
The basic explanation we get on how devil fruits work is that they affect a person's “Lineage Factor,” which seems to be the in-universe equivalent of DNA, or at the very least is something that is related to or integral to a person's genetics. Vegapunk was able to reverse-engineer Kaido’s devil fruit by using a sample of his Lineage Factor, and while we know he deemed it a failure, Momo’s use of it so far implies that it’s otherwise a pretty damn effective copy. Caesar’s SAD formula seems to be an imperfect application of that, but still sure does a heck of a lot to the body of anyone who consumes the fruit it’s made with, whether or not they fail.
This suggests that there are identifiable markers that scientists can see in the genetics of people who have eaten a devil fruit, which also implies that every devil fruit user has a quantifiable biological alteration to their bodies as a result. And we know the Lineage Factor can be affected in other ways too; Vinsmoke Judge altered those of his kids directly through surgery. But most of our in-series examples do come from devil fruits or their knock-off counterparts.
This is most obviously seen in Zoan and Logia users—Zoan devil fruit eaters have the explicit ability to alter their bodies into different degrees of an animal. Logia devil fruit eaters do more or less the same, but instead of say, altering a base human to a base cat, or somewhere in between, it’s more altering the chemical composition of a base human into a different state of matter.
Predictably, it gets weird when we get to the Paramecia fruits, because Paramecia fruits are weird. A lot of them still fit the category of “weird, but plausible in a fantastic sort of way,” like all the fruits that let people generate a substance, and even the ones like Baby 5’s, where she becomes complex weaponry, are still edging on the side of that line.
But then you get the real outliers, like Sugar’s fruit. The eternal youth side effect is the easy part to explain—aging is a biological process—but how do you quantify the toy effect and the memory wiping? Especially the memory wiping, because it affects other people, not her target, and works on a mental, rather than a physical level. What about Belo Betty’s fruit, or Tsuru’s, both of which seem to have some level of brainwashing/alteration of a mental state effect on their targets? What can change about your body that allows you to affect the brain chemistry of other people?
Or hell, Law’s fruit. To the outside observer he’s essentially doing magic; a wave of his hands and things just happen. Sure, there’s a base logic to how it works, but it’s a base logic that is inherently fantastical. Did eating the fruit affect his brain? Is that why he can keep track of everything that exists in his Room—up to and including things like raindrops and snowflakes—without suffering a mental breakdown? Human brains aren’t meant to multitask like that. That’s even before we get to the fact that the Ope Ope no Mi is one of the few devil fruits that seems to confirm the soul as a quantifiable force, or the Perpetual Youth Surgery.
Specific concerns about confusing fruit aside, what can you do with these genetic effects aside from attempt to replicate them? If so desired, could a sufficiently skilled geneticist simply remove a devil fruit eater’s ability entirely? Is that a potential avenue for curing failed SMILE users? It’s concerning if so; of the people we’ve seen or heard messing with genetics in-universe, we’ve got Judge, Queen, Caesar and Vegapunk. Those first three are legit villains, even if Caesar is highly bullyable, and Vegapunk is a straight up mystery working for the marines. Chopper and Law are very good doctors, but I don’t know if this is quite their wheelhouse, even if Law did have access to all the notes he got to snoop into on Punk Hazard.
I dunno; I don’t think it’s a subject we’re likely to delve too deeply into in the series proper, unless for some reason it becomes incredibly story relevant. That said, it is certainly a fun brain worm to roll around, and fun fodder for fic ideas in the future.

Do you think Angels shape-shifting is worth keeping if executed differently?
Short answer: no. Angel already has so much going on with her, shape-shifting feels like a cheap bit, and I'm generally picky with shape-shifting— in fact, I'm so picky that I eliminated Eraser shapeshifting all together in my rewrite.
Now, that being said, I'm aware that that answer is absolutely no fun, so I'm going to try to figure out how Angel's shapeshifting could be executed better, and maybe the rest of the flock's powers, too.
Speaking from a general perspective, I have some major problems with Maximum Ride superpowers, and they're as-follows:
They just HAPPEN. There's no trigger, there's no effort on the flock's part to "unlock" them, and there's no explanation given.
They're often these one-off powers that don't maintain narrative significance or further explanations.
Most of the time, they have absolutely no drawbacks.
And looking at Angel's shapeshifting specifically, there are more issues:
Shapeshifting is one of those powers that feels supernatural instead of scientific to me. This is entirely a personal opinion and completely subjective, but for some reason it feels out of place in a scifi book unless it is something established very early on as something within scientific possibility, and not in book 8
Angel already has so many OP powerups, she absolutely does not need more.
With this being said, I think there are a few ways that I could enjoy Angel's shapeshifting (because you asked about MY opinions, and therefore you get to be subjected to Wasp's opinion corner):
A. Link it to The Angel Experiment, and link it to the other shapeshifters in the series (Erasers). She starts shapeshifting as a direct result of experimentation that happened to her at the School, and it comes with the same pain and mental disregulation that shapeshifting causes Ari. This means that it's introduced very early in the series, and feels less disjointed because there's a parallel to Erasers right there. I'd also stick firmly to Eraser-esque morphing, where it's partial at best and, like Ari, looks frankenstein-esque.
B. Link it to StW, when Angel “turns” on them, which still gives it a connection to the School and everything mentioned in part A, with the extra bonus of her undergoing that experimentation willingly, partially for the sake of the con and partially to gain more power.
C. Throw Scifi out the window, lean full into uncanny valley, and slowly reveal throughout the series that Angel is something that's pretending to be human. This would involve a complete plot overhaul, but it's not like Maximum Ride had a cohesive plot, so it could work! Leaning out of scifi and into fantasy, because it's not like there's a hard line between them anyway, solidify that Max and co. were created to save the world from a fantastical threat, not a human one. Then, as the series goes on, slowly reveal that unlike the rest of them, Angel was not a human-animal hybrid created by the School, but something distinctly other that was found by them (and experimented on). By the time she starts shapeshifting, it's not a miraculously gained power, but instead Angel throwing in the rag at the whole "pretending to be human" thing. And from there, Max has to figure out if she's going to count Angel as a threat to the world she's supposed to save or grind her heels in and refuse to stop treating her as her little sister.
And this is already getting long, so I'll do a breakdown/revamp of everyone's powers elsewhere.

Sources & Significance 1_1.12 - Reader
Kushner, D. (2003) ‘Masters of Doom’
In this book the author charts the inception and creation of id software and their games Commander Keen, DOOM, DOOM II, Quake & Quake 2. It also covers the history of John Carmack and John Romero before carving out their name in gaming history as well as the follow up of the breakdown of their professional relationship. I found this book extremely illustrative in helping me understand the pioneering mindset and attitude of early game design as well as historical approaches to story and gameplay in video games (the famous and since disavowed quote of: “Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important” - John Carmack as a starting example).
Williams, W. ‘Significant Zero’
Penned by the writer behind Spec-Ops: The Line this book is a written manifesto of his experience on the way to and through the AAA Game development scene. It is filled with funny anecdotes and harrowing personal tales of the pressures of the industry. He goes into detail regarding writing and designing characters and the soul-crushing limitations producers will put on your ability to express yourself as well as the high highs of shipping a game and pouring your heart and soul into your work. A fantastic read although I would have liked a little less background a little more focus on game design.
Storr, W. ‘The Science of Storytelling’
This incredible book is full of insight into stories. From why we tell them, to how and why we react to them the way we do. It has some fascinating sections regarding improving your writing, from structure, tense and characters across perspective, flow and most importantly how to make the most of every word. It made me realise that I was vastly over-complicating my writing and bogging it down in unnecessary detail. It is also edited exceptionally well, making for a very smooth read that provides a lot of scientific data while making it very digestible. A great choice for anyone wishing to understand the process of writing better.
Figgis, M. ‘The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations’
Based on the classic 32 dramatic situations this one adds and changes a few to cut down on redundancy and modernise some situations. I’m personally a big fan of concepts being refined into concise and complete categories so this book was right at home in my creative arsenal. It works especially well as a supplementary work to spice up stories when momentum has halted or some events don’t seem to align just right. I would highly recommend the practice of picking 5 situations at random and forcing yourself to craft a story from these prompts. An excellent way to stretch the creative muscles and refine your writing.
Cowan, A. ‘The Art of Writing Fiction’
Another book about the writing process this one works well with The science of storytelling as both have their own unique approach. While Storr’s book focuses on a more scientific approach, Cowan’s is more holistic, with anecdotes and advice from multiple writers. It is also formatted in a rather interesting way, breaking up the information into smaller boxes almost like a text-book. The writing style is sharp and while holistic manages to not deviate from the point and get lost in unnecessary practices or information. It also features practical exercises that, if you so choose to engage with, will help you put theory into practice.
Schell, J. ‘The Art of Game Design’
A incredibly vast and somewhat meandering take on the discipline of game design and all that surrounds it. It applies a set of ‘lenses’ to game design, each being representative of a school of thought within game design, it then taxes you with applying these to your game in order to refine and evaluate it’s strengths and shortcomings. While you will likely not find every lense applicable to your own work, there are many breakthroughs to be had through the application of this book. I must admit I did initially struggle to get into this book, there is such a wealth of knowledge and some of it more holistic than I was used to from an instructional book, but I found that once you have a project in mind you will find many useful new approaches to your craft in this book.
Skolnick E. ‘Video Game Storytelling’
This book is a breakdown of narrative approach to video game storytelling. It’s structure was particularly inviting to me as it seems to be written with a classic writer’s approach, easing you into the ins and outs of game narrative through familiar structures such as character arcs, plot structure, dialogue, etc. Building on this he breaks down the differences between novel and interactive writing in a very approachable manner. He also manages to draw really effective comparisons between disciplines and really highlights the hidden narrative in every game, regardless of genre. I would recommend this if you’re looking to bolster your understanding of narrative interactive or otherwise.
Yorke, J. ‘Into the Woods’
This was the first book I ever read regarding narrative construction and story writing. It is almost spellbinding. You can tell John is a natural storyteller as even when he is teaching you about writing he manages to do so in an engrossing and artful way. But while there is a somewhat almost whimsical nature to the instruction, the book very much lives on the author’s teachings it has a strong structure that carries you along even as some points may be re-tread multiple times (this repetition is snuck into the book to help you really set the foundations of his teachings).
Riedl, M. & Bulitko, V. ‘Interactive Narrative: An intelligent systems approach’
This article covers Interactive narrative through the application of an experience Manager, an omnipresent AI that can be considered an author surrogate. It proposes multiple ways the system may work with interactive narrative structures and NPCs in order to create an interactive world that brings the player into the narrative. It proposes Authorial Intent as being a driving force that needs to be represented by the systems the experience manager applies. It makes for a very stimulating read if you are interested in interactive narratives and the ways complex systems can be broken down creatively through the use of AI.
Weiland, K. M. ‘Creating Character Arcs’
What story would be complete without characters. This is something I neglected early on in my writing attempts. Focusing on well tread archetypes in order for the reader to fill in the blanks. However this often lead to flat, lifeless characters. In this book I found a manifold set of approaches to breathing life, agency and pathos into your characters. The book mostly concerns itself with the characters’ arcs as they relate to the progression of the story and the lense through which the two interact. While I do believe that it’s approach at times can be a little too dogmatic and sparse, I have found it very useful to consult this book when I feel my characters are languishing or failing to connect with the plot.

Gangs of Sherwood Review Cons: - Cannot rebind controls for both the keyboard and the controller buttons. - The mouse cursor stays on the screen. - Controller prompts don't show up in the menus. - The camera sometimes goes a bit crazy when in combat and looks the wrong way. - I find no matter the setting on the lock on is not that great and causes more issues than it solves. - Slowdown happens in places usually with a lot going on like huge enemy numbers or fire. - Invisible walls everywhere. - The game when in solo still expects you to choose a mission and then go across the castle to start. - Even when solo and offline the game doesn't actually pause. - No one moves their mouth when talking. - Most of the in-level cutscenes cannot be skipped. - A lot of the set pieces just resort to throwing tons of enemies at you. - You cannot pick up or sell unwanted Artifacts at a level that feels like a waste. - When in online mode you can still play solo but when offline you cannot switch online on. - No way to change character in the game except by going back to the main menu. - The pinging system is not as fluid as it could be as it's on the dpad. - If you don't have enough coins to get back up then you have to start the whole level again. - Eventually, you realize all the enemies are the same but are either redskins or just have a palette swap. Bosses all look and act the same aside from the act final boss. Related Post: DREDGE The Pale Reach DLC Review (PlayStation 5) Gangs of Sherwood: Official website. June 18- Kyoto Manga Museum
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, we went to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Overall, I enjoyed all of the exhibits and the show that we were able to see. I think that it’s cool that the museum also functions as a massive library of manga starting from the early 1900s and onwards. I wonder if the manga there are donated or if the museum purchased them. It was cool to find out that the building used to be a school and that the museum dedicated some exhibits to pay homage to the school that used to be there. My favorite exhibits were the History of Manga exhibit and the hands exhibit. It was cool to see the hands of so many prominent mangaka who visited the museum. I wasn’t able to find any of my favorite authors though. In the History of Manga exhibit, I liked going through the timeline of the development of this medium from past to present. They also showed a breakdown of how mangakas get paid and included the expansion of manga into different art forms such as video games and cosplays. It was also nice seeing some of my favorite mangas in the exhibit. The Kamis show we saw after looking through the museum was very entertaining. The presenter was hilarious and I enjoyed the quizzes and stories that he showed. The joke about his mom was a really funny note to end on. After the manga museum, I had a reservation at a kimono rental place with some classmates so I went there. It was cool seeing and experiencing how yukatas are put on. I was a bit worried about the hair portion though because the stylists themselves looked worried😭. It turned out well though, so I thought it was nice that they still tried and were able to do well! After everyone was dressed we ended up spending half of our rental time taking pictures at the photo op in the ryokan. After that, we went to the temple across the street and took pictures there as well. Even though yukatas are lighter kimonos, it was still hot, so I couldn’t imagine wearing one all day or during our excursions😭. Afterward, I got Indian food nearby and relaxed in my room. It was another great day!
The reading and the exhibit helped me learn more about the history and add context to some of the exhibits I saw as well. In the main exhibit hall containing information about the history of manga, I saw the term “serialization pauper”. This described how mangakas who have their works published in serialized magazines earn very little money from these magazines due to the wide distribution of profit to the people involved. I wonder why mangakas still have their works included in these magazines despite the little profit they receive. The popularity of these serialized magazines may help the artist’s work become popular enough that they would be able to receive profit by having it adapted in other mediums such as anime and video games.
Another thing that I found interesting from the reading that was elaborated on in the museum was the division of manga themes. One theme that I didn’t find in the reading was seinen, which the manga museum defined as having a demographic of young adult-adult men. I found it interesting because of the relationship between the genres of seinen and gekiga. Both tackle more mature themes and feature mature content. However, seinen tackles issues in a more fantastical setting such as Attack on Titan and Psycho-Pass. Although gekiga isn’t really popular anymore, I feel like the same themes formed the basis of the seinen genre, which is extremely popular today.

Just a random thought of the 6.24 pm in which Emmet in the period when Ingo is lost in Hisui, in the moments when he allows himself to have a breakdown or sleep, sinks into his brother’s bed and remains there for a lot of hours to embrace a stuffed animal of a train (which his brother gave him) for the whole time of his collapse or his sleep. Every night after his work Elesa goes to his house to check on him and give him support and love. She is not her brother, but she will do whatever he needs as a friend to make him feel a little better and prevent him from doing stupid things or having intrusive thoughts.

Letters to Myself
Heyo people, I have a project on Yuriy and this the first of three letters who he sends to himself: the first one is for Young Yuriy, the second will be for the Present Yuriy and the last for the Future Yuriy. I don't want to say no more, I want you to enjoy it! Some warnings before we start: mention of guns, blood, abuse, violence Young Yuriy
The psychologist gave me this task, but I don’t really know how to do it, but Kai’s writing will make it look better than it will be.
Hello Yuriy of the past or the future, or maybe both, is the Yuriy of the present that tries to dialogue with you, if you are listening to me, I would like to vent a little with you if you like, but even if it were not so, you are obliged to listen to me.
I would like to start by talking to the Yuriy about the past, oh little me, how many you have been through and overcome, how many atrocities and pain you have suffered that you did not deserve, how many wounds, how much blood and tears you shed in your childhood; you who were happy even with the little you had in that always warm little house with mom and dad. You loved your mother very much and her long skirts, as long as her wonderful copper threads, which she always decorated with some brooches or some flower that you gave her when you went to the market and collected on the street, and she smiled at you as if you had given her the most beautiful jewel in existence; you smiled little Yuriy, you smiled so much, and you were loved by all. At the market you were always given something by the sellers; who a candy, who a small plush, who a t-shirt, but the one you care most of all that they gave you in those years, the most important, that I still keep with care, is the first book on the constellations and the space that they have given you: "the space and the stars explained to children".
You were immediately entranced by the cover and all the bright stars that were on it, even if you didn’t really understand what was written, you always had trouble reading and writing, but it wasn’t your fault, it always was, but in those days you didn’t care, it was enough for you to leaf through the pages and see all those beautiful images of the stars, planets and infinite space; you seemed so great and fantastic that you wanted to explore it all and know everything and dad was the one who indulged you and took you to see the stars in the days when he was home and he was happy and you still could not imagine that that happiness with him would not last long, But everything you know about the stars and physics and the universe was because of him, the sweetest part of your bitter memory of him. Do you still remember that beautiful day when he took you and Mom to see the stars and the sunrise up that hill? Away from the hustle and bustle of Saint Petersburg that August day? Well, that night I still carry it with me, you know; Mom dancing with Dad under the stars, her bright smile, the look in love with Dad that made her turn and me looking enchanted at the sky and its immensity while I heard them laughing.
You know, little Yuriy, that was the best day of your childhood. After...well... Then came the deep darkness, which never seemed to end and that still hurts me and that made me what I am. That darkness changed you so little Yuriy: mom did not smile anymore, did not hug you anymore, you did not go to the market, his eyes were black for the beatings and red for the tears, while yours were black for fear, and the face burgundy for the slaps that Dad pulled you, Did he smell bad when he did it? That pungent smell that I still can’t stand and makes me feel nauseous and still makes me feel the pain of those kicking punches and slaps, and the coldness of indifference.
Things got worse and worse; Mom’s abandonment, you became a thief to survive until at some point you ran away too and lived only on the streets of the city, hugging your stuffed animal and your book. At first you cried a lot, then the tears turned into anger and bitterness, too many for a sweet and kind child like you, who was taken away in a clean blow, like a gunshot breaks a life. You will learn to use that gun little red wolf , you will be the deadliest with a weapon in your hand, the coldest and most calculating, you will become yourself the most valuable weapon of that devil dressed as a peaceful monk, which was not peaceful. You had no choice, not you, not that friend you met on the streets, Boris. Was a choice between starving to death and having the slightest chance of living, and you tried to choose the second option... But unfortunately, in the end it was like dying by staying alive. That place has no words to describe except with death, violence, destruction, abuse; that acrid smell of burning, blood and alcohol, that sound of beyblade blades colliding. Those decided your fate: if you ate, if you could take a shower or have an extra blanket and avoid being beaten and locked in cold cells.
You had no choice, little Yuriy, if you wanted to survive, if you did not win again and again, even with the few forces you had in that frail little body, even going against your own companions, against all that you believed right, against your pure and clear soul, It became encrusted with blood and black sticky as pitch, the ice that blocked them there and did not go away anymore.
You learned to live with it and you made them your own, even though they ate you alive more and more every day and every night the monsters came to visit you. When it happened you took out your little book from under the pillow and leafed through those pages now soaked with moisture and faded, but that gave you comfort and reminded you of those happy moments that now you no longer had while you watched your companions suffer and heard the distant screams of other kids like you, who probably never got out of that hell, And to isolate yourself and not hear them, you looked out that little window, you remember, right? You could always see the moon when it was full or when it wasn’t, the sky was so dark that you could see even the smallest star, which you still wanted to see up close, to study and touch outside those walls.
In the end you came out of those walls and that hell little me, you came out with your companions, but you came out destroyed, a soul all to rebuild from scratch, to clean from all fears, traumas, anxieties, nightmares, blood, insomnia, clean from gunpowder, that when you shot others for a living you also shot yourself unwittingly; 8 years of abuse and scars are not easy to overcome small great Yuriy. Beyblade, physics, science and world travel have been your salvation throughout your adolescence, a adolescence perhaps more difficult than childhood, because when you’re little and in the middle of hell, you turn off your brain and go on by inertia, but when you get older, when you’re out, your brain can’t turn it off, no matter how much you try, no matter how much you want it; oh my teenage Yuriy, I know how hard it was not to succumb to anger and fear, regret and loneliness and tears, I know, but I can tell you that you were really good, and I’m so proud of how much you’ve worked on yourself. Do you know what was my favorite moment of your adolescence? When you took over your interests and discovered new ones.
That incredible talent you had for physics you were able to apply it in your life, in the sport you loved, you could analyze every single movement, every single mistake or some little problem to your blade thanks to physics and its rules, and you could also fix the problems to the blades of your companions when they could not, despite your still very closed and icy character, you have always believed in them and in their proximity, were your firm point, true? Well, they still are, and I’m really grateful that you didn’t let them go and hold them to you, even if in your own way, with that piece of honest, clean child soul that you had left, that wasn’t affected by all the madness. You still remember their voices at your bedside while you were in a coma, huh? Those voices that extinguished the nightmares you were constantly imprisoned in and couldn’t come back from, and all it took was some bullshit they said in the hope of making you laugh and wake up to turn them off and drive them away.
Do you still remember the sweet and affectionate words sprinkled with the tears of Borya, in which he showed all the good he always wanted you and that for him you were his family and the brother he always wanted and that without you he would never come out alive from that monastery, I mean, you had been his pillar, what he had been to you but you never had the courage to tell him, then there are the simplest and whispered I love you of Sergei, than I had been fundamental for him over the years, and then the unexpected embrace of Ivan, who came from Russia only to be with you, and the most shocking words, from whom you never expected to come, from the most silent person in this world: Kai. Kai had come when there was no one, more lost than ever, you could hear him from his shaky, fragile breath that something was wrong, that didn’t work. You will only find out later why him was so destroyed, but at that moment he told you a few simple but strong and significant words: don't try to die, you are stronger than that, I know how strong you are and I admire you for that, so don't try to leave. And at that point he left with his dranzer after having seen him laid on the pillow next to you; you had understood his words, and in fact you did not give up, for any reason. You woke up from that endless sleep and continued to fight with your life, to build your passions and interests, you discovered new passions.
Dance saved you, huh? It’s good, right? You didn’t believe it either when you first danced, when your body moved by itself dragged by the music and the rhythm and the pain slipped away like ice melting under the sun, like rain washing everything away, and you were breathless with so much strength and power given by those movements and those notes. Then you never stopped. And now you're here dancing in front of me, in the beauty of your 20 years, in front of the 27-year-old you finally freer, lighter and more alive, chasing your dreams finally. Get ready to hear my part of the story little great Yuriy of the past, because the Yuriy of the present has really made some important steps, and it is right that you listen to them, to say that you do. It was worth all the pain you went through, it helped. And now you’re gonna find out. Make yourself comfortable in front of me, I'll tell all the story.

Random thoughts of Lampo are back! In the tonight menù we have small headcanons on Melli! (Already sorry for my English!)
- He is a transgender boy and he understood when he was quite young that there was something between his body and how he really felt that he was not working but he always kept it hidden, given the age in which he was born.
- It is of the sign of Leo, an August Leo.
- He tried to keep his voice low enough to be more masculine and this make him feel good about himself.
- His ego is largely a shell that he uses to defend himself from others and look strong, when in reality it should only be protected and make him venting, otherwise it will explode like a voltorb.
- His favorite dish is a soup made from berries found only in the highlands.
- Prefers sunrise to sunset.
- The first person he confessed to feeling like a boy and not a girl was Adaman, who was initially shocked for some time, but then everything went back to normal.
- On days when women’s duties hits (if you know what I mean) is difficult to see him around . He hates everything about those days and the discomfort they cause him by reminding him that the body does not match who he is. In total breakdown surrounded by little voltorbs and Lord Electrode, also present in his own way.
- He will understand that he feels feelings and attraction for boys when Ingo appears in front of him, despite finding him initially weird.
- Over time, Melli will also teach Ingo to speak Sinnohian properly and especially not to pick poisonous berries.
- He will understand that he is totally under a train for the Lady Snesler's warden when they find themselves having to share the cave of Melli because Ingo remained stuck there because of a storm and everything Ingo said about sneasler, the only thing left in Melli's mind are the features of his face and how he wanted to kiss him to make him shut up and feels how those lips taste.

morgan ive got to know your thoughts on tua s3. i went into it so hyped to see certain characters get butchered like they did (from a writing perspective) is … upsetting. and the plot holes like … ??
hmmm im on episode 9 rn and idk....i just think it's so lacking for some reason. i think one of the main reasons why is because while i love the dysfunctional siblings dynamic, i thought in the second season the siblings had fantastic character development individually and together as a group. only to still see the frustrating miscommunication that plagued them in both the first and second season at play. they never share anything with one another (with viktor that's understandable) no matter how much it's in their best interests too. another key theme in TUA is how the world always ends because of their shortcomings as a family; no matter how much individual action is taken to stop it, they work better as a team and family, and in fact their individual actions end up speeding up the apocalypse or even causing it.
spoilers!
i think the one thing with the umbrella academy is that if everyone just communicated and for once took each other seriously and at face value past moments of intense (and scary) vulnerability, it would be a lot easier to save the world. honestly i get it. their childhood was fucked up and they all have daddy issues and while we didn’t get over it i thought we got better!!!!! they don’t even notice klaus is gone for like 2 days LMAO. or even luther.
the new season still had many enjoyable moments that was unabashedly in character with its weirdness. but as for allison....like she finally got the OP power up i wanted to see but did it have to be like THAT????? ms. girl just had to speak a little faster but instead of using it on her foes she’s going after her siblings??? i’ve seen differing opinions on her character this season most bad but also some good that liked allison spiraling and thought it was important to point out that allison has the same trauma as all of her siblings along with the racial trauma of the 60s. yeah the girl was due for a complete mental breakdown. as much as i hated the SA scene i thought it was painfully aligned with the vain and jealous character we briefly saw in season 1 before character development. i definitely didn’t like harlan’s treatment though :(
i still have one more episode to watch so we’ll see how i feel after it ends....but still for someone who was expecting to like this season much more than the second im kinda disappointed. especially with the treatment of the sparrows who were all super one dimensional!!! all of them have super cool and awesome powers but we only see them as villains. shame!!!!
add on: it hurts so much to see klaus being taken advantage of 😭 Reginald is going to HELL for what he did.

vnc episode 12 thoughts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thrilling conclusion to the Vanitas no Carte anime’s first cour is out, and I have thoughts! I’m still considering doing a full season/ fill cour review, but I have a Lot of episode 12- specific opinions, so this review / breakdown / thing will focus around e12!
A warning before we begin— review will contain spoilers for events that take place in the vnc manga and not in the anime, and will most likely spoil some sections of the anime’s next cour. With that, let’s get started!
Episode 12 of the VnC anime covers chapters 19, 21, 22, and 23 of the manga.
To begin this review in a brutally honest way, this episode was… in my opinion as a manga reader… bad. It did have some ok moments, but generally devoted a lot of its time to a plotline that (while adorable) isn’t actually super important compared to what was left on the wayside. Vanitas and Noé’s fight over blood drinking is fine, I guess, but why’d we get that minute long flashback compilation and not Dante’s conversation with Dominique, or Roland and Olivier’s complete conversation, or Astolfo’s excitement to hunt vampires, or Mikhail?
I really truly wish the show had taken some of the money and time that went into the Vanitas and Noé fight from chapter 23 and put it into the arguably much more important and interesting parts of this episode. Ruthven drinking Noé’s blood, Roland’s threat, and Chloé and Astolfo’s introductions all had some very janky stills and animations. It truly irked me to see that time and effort went into making Noé’s mouth move while he’s mentally monologuing about wanting to drink Vanitas’s blood, while Roland’s fantastic threat from Chapter 22 got… this. click on image for worse quality
Tumblr media
The episode also decided to continue E11’s habit of chopping scenes up and mashing them together. In E11 this was a very not great decision, but was ultimately somewhat forgiveable from a tone point of view. In E12, meanwhile, it’s just all out chaos as the anime tries to string five completely separate scenes into something coherent (Noé and Vanitas in the hotel, Ruthven and Jeanne in the street, Domi and Dante on the stairs, Roland and Olivier in the chasseur compound, and a flashback to complete the Ruthven and Noé encounter from E11). Suffice it to say the anime does not succeed in this endeavor.
What really irritates me about this is that the manga already provided a framework for the anime to work these scenes together into. A frantic Vanitas reunites with Noé, Ruthven meets Jeanne in the street, Roland and Olivier speak about the beast, we see a mysterious flashback of Chloé calling for Jeanne as they talk, cut to Jeanne in the present as Dante and Ruthven’s attendants simultaneously tell Ruthven and Vanitas about the beast’s return.
I really wish the anime could’ve just given us the conclusion to the Ruthven scene at the start of the episode, done the OP, and then followed this series of events to a T. But it didn’t, and the result is a bit of a mess.
The anime’s choice to omit half of Roland and Olivier’s conversation means Dante’s announcement about the beast being back has no meaning or weight; Vanitas running to the hotel before we know what actually happened to Noé at the cafe ruins the drama and irony of the scene; Noé’s lack of memory of what happened at the cafe is muddled by the weirdly placed cafe flashback right afterwards; the anime putting Olivier’s “what that man believes in isn’t god” line seconds before the reveal of Roland’s intelligent and scheming nature doesn’t give the line enough room to breathe and stew; and the transition scene with Domi and Dante just doesn’t fit. I can honestly say I would have preferred Dante just teleporting from the streets of Paris to Vani and Noé’s windowsill than have that scene smack dab in the middle of what’s already a confusing mishmash of way too many unconnected events.
Wow. That was a long, critical paragraph. one might even say it was just as chaotic and disorganized as the episode itself. I feel like I’m really living up to my fullest potential as a bitter manga simp. So! Let’s turn things around and talk about some of the good parts of this episode!!
Tumblr media
First and foremost I want to compliment this episode’s music..! The soundtrack of VnC is just all round fantastic no matter what— whether it’s playing during a goofy scene or a fight, it’s is bound to be fantastic. I think my favorite pieces are the ones that play at quiet, ominous moments— the music during Vanitas and Dante’s conversation about the beast is excellent, adding something truly incredible to the atmosphere created by the illustrations of the beast and the eerie green light of the scene. The way the music lines up with Olivier’s “what that man believes in…” line during that one flashback is similarly awesome.
This episode also has very nice voice acting..! Despite all of its struggles in the visual and plot department, pretty much everything to do with the VnC anime’s audio is stellar. I’ve become a big fan of Jeanne, Roland, and Olivier’s voices (I can’t wait to see how Olivier’s VA works with all his screaming in the Gévaudan arc); Astolfo’s voice is perfect for him (I am similarly excited to see his clipped, polite tone take a turn for the insane as the Gévaudan arc moves forwards); and as always our protagonists’ voices are great.
My one singular problem with the voice acting this episode is Chloé. I don’t know why, but she sounds like a catgirl from a fantasy anime rather than a multiple- centuries- old vampire. I don’t know what I was expecting from her voice, but this wasn’t it. I really hope Chloé’s voice will grow on me like Roland’s did, but there’s just something about it that feels off to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However! That one detriment doesn’t detract from the fact that this episode does have some very beautiful moments, especially during that one last scene with Chloé at the end. Visually, Chloé is absolutely spot on— I only hope the show has the budget to keep giving her pretty, pretty scenes like this. The scene where Vanitas and Dante discuss the beast is also very very nice to look at. The monochromatic red section of Ruthven and Noé’s scene is excellent. And, while I’m still annoyed that this scene got so much love put into it and others did not, Noé’s spotlight-lit monologue is aesthetically pleasing as well.
With that, we’ve covered all of my main thoughts on the final episode of the vnc anime’s first cour! My feelings towards this episode’s plot and pacing are overwhelmingly critical, and the episode’s visuals are a toss up (leaning on the side of bad, @/ that Roland screenshot), b u t the episode’s music and voice acting are both fantastic. And honestly? That’s kinda how I feel about this whole cour of the anime.
Episode 12 might not have been “good”, but I believe it’s a very neat representation of the best and worst of what Vanitas no Carte as an anime has to offer.
Despite all my critiques I am still legally obligated to love this anime, and can’t wait to see the Gévaudan arc in the next cour!
Fun Fact
Tumblr media
The weirdly technological background when Noé realizes he’s hungry makes absolutely no sense for an anime set in 1889, but for some reason that just makes this scene funnier to me

Things ILITW did right:
-The cast. The cast was fucking incredible. They all had their own unique problems and we got to glimpse into their lives by playing as them. Additionally, there wasn’t anyone in the group I didn’t like. Lily was my least favorite but even she was a likable character.
-Dan. Dan doesn’t get a lot of screentime, and even though he’s technically a member of the main gang, he’s more of a side character. But PB still made me fall in love with his storyline. It really resonated with me. He was clearly grappling with the trauma from Jane’s death years and years into the future, but since he was the star football quarterback, he felt he couldn’t show any signs of weakness or ask for help. If he survives the final encounter with Jane, he becomes a trauma counselor, and he seems so much happier and more at ease with himself. I love that for him.
-Jane. It’s already been established that I’m terrible at predicting twists, but finding out that Jane was the monster all along at the end of chapter 14 shocked me to my core. I remember yelling at the revelation, I was so surprised. I was both amazed and appalled that Jane was the cause of all the chaos, violence, and terror throughout the story. Jane was the perfect villain.
-The vibe. The vibe is more creepy (while ILB is just outright scary and goes straight for the fear factor) and I think this book really benefitted from the creepiness rather than forcing sheer terror upon us in the first book.
-The lore. ‘Nuff said.
-The pets! We get a baby crow FOR FREE, can babysit Hilda (good fluffy dog!), can get an adorable black kitten, AND can even get a vine monster pet!
-The love interests. In my opinion, all the love interests are fairly equal to each other (except Andy, who blows the rest of them away because he is FANTASTIC). I’m pretty sure most of them get equal amounts of scenes and the nerve boosts make them OP as hell.
-The shed. I loved getting to go to the shed in the chapters for weapons, the lore documents, the pets, clues, and what have you. It was nice that it actually served a role in the story.
-The outfits. There wasn’t a single outfit in MC’s closet I didn’t like. And, while I’m on the topic of the outfits, I also appreciate the lack of outfits. There are only three times in the story where we’re presented with the option to buy outfits. The beginning, before Britney’s party, and before homecoming. That’s it. The clothes and outfits aren’t constantly hawked at us for purchase, unlike...other stories.
-The cast deaths. This is a little morbid, but I thought the ways the main cast died were honestly kind of cool, and I liked how some of their causes of death also reflected key points of the story. Ava being toyed with and flung around to her death like how she used her powers, Andy being torn apart from the inside by spiders, Lily being picked apart by birds, it was morbid and creepy and gross and I loved it. The art team drawing the cast’s dead bodies at the end for maximum shock impact was also a nice touch, and I kinda wish they did that for ILB.
-The nerve. I think the nerve loss/gain was pretty on-point in this book. Nerve loss was kind of big, I will admit, but it was usually pretty easy to get lost nerve back. On my first playthrough with no diamond purchases, not a single character died.
-The memorial. Seeing all the different dialogue outcomes when the entire group is dead or when only one person is dead, or when Noah survives or MC survives, there was obviously a lot of thought put into the memorial. It was very heartbreaking and very well done.
-The music. What a bop.
-The plot. The plot was very well paced, and every chapter contributed pretty evenly to the plot. In other words, filler in this book was at an all-time low. The only chapter that was kind of filler-y was the homecoming chapter, but that was to trick us into thinking the fight was over.
-The romance. As I’ve mentioned before, It Lives has a very, very high stakes plot. This inevitably led to the romance/dating features taking a backseat to the main plot, which of course, was necessary. It doesn’t make sense having romance as the main focus when a homicidal shadow monster is hunting you and your friends down, after all.
-The mental health and trauma mentions. Overall, mental health and trauma can be kind of tricky to talk about, and need to be handled very carefully. I felt that ILITW was very respectful and careful in that regard, and mentions of mental health were handled as realistically as they could be in a supernatural horror story.
Things ILITW really could’ve improved:
-Lily, Ava, and MC. Lily, Ava, and MC’s storylines felt considerably weaker than the rest of the cast. The storylines just felt...lacking. All three were bullied by Jocelyn, Britney, and Cody, though Lily and MC got the brunt of it. Ava’s storyline mainly focused on gaining and losing her powers, which wrapped itself up within 3 or 4 chapters. The bullying plot ended after chapter 7 when Cody died and wasn’t really mentioned again, and Lily’s storyline shifted its focus onto her relationship with Britney. MC felt more like a self-insert than an actual character throughout most of the story (ILB MC definitely felt like more of a character). Not to say they were a bad character, but they were definitely lacking.
-The nerve checks. Unlike ILB, the ILITW nerve checks didn’t really do anything. At least, not until the final game with Jane. In ILB, you paid the price if your friends didn’t pass the nerve checks spread throughout the conflicts. If Tom fails his nerve check, your MC loses a finger, nerve, and Tom suffers a breakdown. Danni betrays the group if she doesn’t pass hers. Imogen’s isn’t terribly high stakes, but she does lose her connection to the power if she doesn’t pass the nerve check. Parker accidentally shoots Kelley and abandons the group forever if he fails his. Failing the first group nerve check will cause Tom to snap and cause a massive argument. Failing the second group nerve check will result in the death of whoever has the lowest nerve. In ILITW, nerve checks simply yield different dialogue, and at the end, determine whether a character will live or die, though this seems to be partially randomized.
-The flashbacks. Maybe it’s just me, but I felt like there were too many flashbacks, and that some of them could’ve been lumped together.
-The side characters. Personally, I find that the side characters in stories are the most interesting. Unfortunately, most of the side characters didn’t get a lot of development and were used simply as plot devices or character development for the main cast. Jocelyn, Britney, Cody, and even Ben could’ve been fleshed out much more. Tom was also severely lacking in development in ILITW, but he was upgraded to a main cast member and love interest in ILB, so that problem solved itself.

STARLESKA IMPORTANT QUESTION
how do you think dave and doc ock would get along if they somehow met? i haven't watched spiderman yet so im new to doc ock but he reminds me of a certain little octopus 😳
ahaha YES OKAY THIS IS EXACTLY THE QUESTION I WAS HOPING SOMEONE WOULD ASK!!! thank you OP for this, as i definitely have some thoughts 🥰 okay, here's a breakdown: for everyone on either side of the equation who may not know the other: Dave the Octopus, also known as Dr Octavius Brine, is the antagonist of The Penguins of Madagascar 2014 movie, portrayed by John Malkovich. he is literally an octopus who disguises himself as a renowned human geneticist in order to exact his highly specific trauma-based revenge. by contrast, Doctor Otto Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus or Doc Ock, is a recurring antagonist for the Marvel hero Spider-Man, and he is prominently (and sexily) portrayed by Alfred Molina in the 2004 movie 'Spider-Man 2'. the story differs depending on who is telling it, but invariably Otto is a brilliant scientist whose detachable mechanical tentacles become fused to his body, causing him to become a supervillain. in the 2004 portrayal, this is because of the influence of the artificial intelligence of the tentacles on his mind. i happen to be one of those people who thirsts for both of these characters, because the pandemic has been rough on all of us 😂 first off, i do not think Dave and Otto would get along at all. i'm envisioning them meeting firstly prior to Otto's accident, and also prior to Dave's successful capturing of the penguins. Dave would resent Otto for his easy wit and charm, and especially for his wonderful wife Rosalie. as we know, Dave covets the affections of humans and is infuriated by anyone who receives love and adoration from them. i feel he'd be especially incensed by a fellow scientist - a brilliant, human one at that - who has what looks to be an incredible life with a devoted partner. Doc Ock in the comics and other Spider-Man media isn't always portrayed as being so suave and fortunate before the attachment of the tentacles, but in the case of the Molina Doc Ock, i think Dave would be sickened and jealous 😭💖 by contrast, i like to think Otto would clock on quickly that there isn't something quite 'right' about Dave. it wouldn't escape his attention that Dave doesn't move normally, is constantly wet, has stories that don't quite add up, etc. i wouldn't be surprised if the two ended up in some sort of dorky, posturing, loud 'debate' with one another over the validity of their scientific efforts. they aren't even in the same field, but perhaps Dave would loudly proclaim Otto's invention of the extra tentacles to be insulting and primitive - nothing compared to 'legitimate' science, like genetic altering. but Otto would certainly bite back by questioning 'Dr Octavius Brine' and his 'credentials', whilst also pointing out that he is seeking to better the whole of humankind - whilst Octavius is just messing around with penguins. but can you imagine the two of them meeting after their specific inciting events? Otto following the fusing of the tentacles to his body, and Dave following the initiation of his plan to capture all of the penguins. imagine the events of both movies somehow running parallel alongside one another...if the two fought physically, it would be very interesting. Doc Ock has the physical strength in leaps and bounds, particularly as his tentacles are constructed from titanium steel. although they'd realistically knock him off-balance, they're quick and prehensile, and he says that the signals from his brain to the limbs move quicker than the ones to his actual arms and legs. by contrast, Dave is a slick shapeshifter, capable of contorting his body into fantastic deceptions with seemingly no time limit or difficulty. i feel that there'd be a serious struggle between the two if they fought; it would be so hard for those tentacles to grasp onto an octopus, and it would be just as difficult for an octopus to make a dent in a man who made himself a cyborg 😅 honestly, this is a fanfic in the making. i would totally write it if it wasn't the most niche thing in the fucking universe 😂💖 OP do yourself a favour and watch the movie, it's so much fun!! i'm about to show it to my partner for the first time 🥰 i hope these are the answers you were looking for!! 💖
