His face fascinates me. His Great Brow overshadows his Eyes and in a human person this expression would be called a scowl, but in the Gorilla it seems to mean the exact opposite. He represent many things, among them Peace, Tranquility, Strength and Endurance.
Working on this gave me a lot of time to think about Piranesi, and why it resonated with me. In the end, I think it’s because the protagonist himself is such a rare type in fiction: empathetic and curious, kind to others but perfectly happy alone. That ability to be by himself, to be content experiencing his world without loneliness is so important to me.
The statues are the stars of Piranesi, but the image that stuck in my mind were those moments when he paused to look through the windows. Maybe it’s because I’ve done a lot of traveling alone; there’s a certain feeling when you turn from the fancy rooms or the statues in a grand old palace, and notice how the sunlight falls through the windows. There’s an aching melancholy to it -- the sense of gentle decay, the awareness that you might never return to this place -- but also a loveliness. And that’s the House to me. Beauty immeasurable. Kindness infinite.
a big big big thank you to all the fan artists ever bc i can barely "see" anything inside my own mind while reading books, so y'all are like 95% of the reason i know what anything looks like ever
Had the idea to do little illustrations based on the books I was reading. First one was Piranesi, by Susanna Clarke. I loved the book the tone and mystery. I don't like explaining it because the whole book is about discovering this weird world that is one giant building filled with statues, and the fun is learning what it actually is.
I like how the drawing turned out. I had something specific in mind, I think I got pretty close. I think I did a pretty good job faking the statues in perspective.
Another book cover design I did ages and ages ago for Piranesi, by Suzanna Clarke. I do think this was possibly one of the most beautiful and emotional books I’ve ever read. Recommend forever.
my best friend piranesi in the weird pink room from the stanley parable! sometimes i wonder, was stanley someone before he entered the office, like piranesi was someone before he came to the House? who knows!!! have a drawing!!!!
