This was the final set from Ehi Passiko- largely unrelated but sitting non the less as a family of images - the first two pages being the faces of ancestor spirits I had begun to notice around me (due to strengthening my sense of holy apophenia and hallucinatory visions under the blessing of Keri Smith). I photographed these beings so there was evidence that my slide into alternative sanity was justified and that they were real. The one with the boiled eggs was especially real. After that was my wind-horse linocut, which in Tibet is the symbol for very speedy benefits of practicing Buddhadharma. Visible in these umbilical cord sections are two, paired umbilical arteries (eyes) and a single umbilical vein (mouth).

The umbilical arteries carry de-oxygenated blood away from the growing baby to the placenta.

"Hold on...arteries carry oxygenated blood right??" Most of the time this is true... however arteries actually carry blood away from the heart regardless of oxygenation level and in some instances that means they carry mostly deoxygenated blood. This is true for the umbilical arteries and also the pulmonary arteries whose job it is to carry de-oxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs.

Once the blood reaches the placenta it comes into close contact (but does not mix with) mom's blood. Oxygen and nutrients diffuse across the cells of the placental barrier and into the baby's blood. This oxygen and nutrient replenished blood is then returned to the baby's body via that single umbilical vein.

"Hold on...veins carry de-oxygenated blood right??" Most of the time yes... however veins actually carry blood towards the heart regardless of oxygenation level and in some instances that means they carry mostly oxygenated blood. this is true for the umbilical veins and also the pulmonary veins whose job it is to carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left side of the heart ready for distribution to the entire body.
