Yes! It was a very boring Pokemon Direct! And thank fuck for it!

There are many, many things to complain about the Pokemon Company and Game Freaks; you can point of most of them with the last mainline games.

Yet the last thing that I had seen popping up lately is making me wonder what the fuck are you all thinking.

All I had been seen is people complaining how boring was the nintendo direct, asking for X or Y game, or so on.

And at this point I am wondering why you want any of that.

In a span of a year, we got three mainline pokemon games.

November 19, 2021: BDSP.

January 28, 2022: Legends Arceus.

November 18, 2022: Scarlet and Violet.

And how did that go?

BDSP: A remake that the pokemon company didn't actually make, probably because they were busy with Arceus and Scarvio.

The excuse of being 'like the original' ended up making it an extreme dull remake; even the people who weren't deterred for the art style didn't seem to like it too much, and I even know of youtubers who abandoned gameplays of it; and those are the people that do it for work.

Legends Arceus: I really liked this game, so I watched many videos and gameplays of it, want me to tell you something I came across multiple times "If you gave it a year or two extra, all of these issues wouldn't be there."

Popping issues, errors here and there, so on. Arceus came with its fair share of problems.

Scarlet and Violet: I could list every issue it has, but honestly I bet if you haven't encounter issues yourself, you have seen the funny videos or at least see the reviews because I'm pretty sure the ratings of anything that lets users vote the rating ended in the slumps because of their issues.

And what are you all complaining about? Games.

Scarvio and Legends were made in parallel to each other, most probably two teams (and this company isn't exactly big, is a bit more than 150.) Not sure how many people were working on Scarvio once Legends came out, but it clearly not enough.

Scarvio is still, getting updates for bugs, and I swear the popping keeps getting worse.

Now please someone explain me why anyone want a new game in these conditions.

The last year or two were poured into mainlines games and it wasn't enough, even if they would had announced a Mystery Dungeons or similar, I doubt it would had been any polishing in it.

Because in case you guys forgot, we have THREE Nintendo Directs a year.

And if you haven't notice, they don't do the things you will see in E3 of saying "yeah we are working on this game and it may take us another 5 years before launch." Oh no no.

Want to hear something funny? I remember when I first heard the rumors of Pokemon doing a Region in Spain; I heard it from Spanish friends since there were News of people of the pokemon company in Japan going to the european headquarters in Spain; and people caught on that detail because something similar happened with sending people to Hawaii and then we had Gen 7.

If you notice a bit of doubt while saying this story, is because it happened years ago; before Gen 8 was announced.

Not when Sword and Shield came out, before we even had an announcement. We didn't even know about Galar yet.

And before someone call me out saying there is no way they had been working on Scarvio this long and still came out this messy- If people were sent there, was because that was the earliest of the stages, planning. They wouldn't even have a title for it yet.

But this means it has been in the planning for awhile, and when did we hear first about gen 9? Last year, the same year it was coming out.

And this isn't even getting into how the pacing for these games is not slowing down, and they should.

It took this company longer than it should get with the times, it really isn't totally yet there to be honest.

The games are getting more and more complex in every possible way and there is no way they can keep up if they continue insisting we need to have mainline games this frequent.

Like seriously, had ANY of you thought of how much more complicated this is getting? My first generation was the fourth one, the sprites of the protagonist for example had an animation for walking, running, for pulling the pokeball to fly, and if someone remembers anything else please tell me.

Our MC in scarvio? You can go down, you have an animation for sneaking, you have idle animations, if you go to a specific part in the menu you have different ones as well alongside poses and so on. And this isn't even getting into the level of customization that believe me, in my generation? Not even in our wildest dreams.

And even then the MC still needs a lot of polish. Like even if we have different expressions a lot of times it feels mechanic.

Again, I am not saying Game Freak is exempt for criticism. Complain about the bugs, complain about the graphics.

But don't fucking come at me saying you want games and shit with every pokemon direct. We have three a year, of course we are going to have boring ones, and frankly we don't have enough, BECAUSE THE GAMES STILL COME BROKEN.

You guys don't think that I am frustrated? I love Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, I adore the story and the characters it has; the ending is the best this franchise ever had (and I will die in this hill.) The fact that you can take any gym, titan or stair raid is brilliant because now you establish your own pace. Oh you don't want to do this bit of story yet? That's cool, you can just do anything else; is not like in previous games where if you want to see more map but didn't want to evil team raid despite the story saying so, well you were out of luck.

If Scarlet and Violet came without the bugs and had a good scaling system, it would had been without a doubt, the best pokemon games we got up to date.

And what we got was such a buggy mess Nintendo was giving refunds like this is 2016 and we are playing No Man's Sky.

I'm absolutely furious that we could have gotten something so great and we didn't get it, and why was that? Oh yeah THEY DIDN'T HAVE TIME.

Hell want me to be honest? It scares me how the only things we have gotten for the DLC are art work; if they can't even give us a proper trailer it worries me how much they have done, and more importantly, how much can be finish by the dates we have.

Games aren't an easy task, hell I had seen books that had taken more time that pokemon games.

Complain that they have bugs, complain that they are not giving devs enough time, complain that we don't have enough devs- but don't fucking come crying about a Nintendo Direct being boring when not only we got a mainline game recently, it came broken because of it.

all of the blood of eden codenames for the lyctors are based on mythical weapons, the exception being source aegis (athena’s shield, sometimes featuring the gorgon’s head), but it does make sense upon reconsideration because gideon was not the person the codename was meant for, it was pyrrha, and what is a cavalier if not a protector of their necromancer? it makes much more sense for pyrrha to be the source aegis referred to as wake’s informant, especially since we learned that phyrra was the one who instigated the relationship, not gideon prime.

Imma throw my two cents here, I think Scott spoiled us rot, every year for the 6 first games we had one, from fnaf 1 to sister location, and now peps expect games to come out rushed. Pokemon Sword and Shield, for example, is extremely rushed, poorly textured, the story feels bland like European food. People gotta wait for batdr, it's not in chapters anymore, is a wholeass game now, it already annoys me that Twitter keeps bugging theMeatly about a damn trailer or teaser, they need to calm down, they are working on the game to make up for lost time.

i'm not that familiar with fnaf games tbh but it felt like to me that at least the first three are nowhere near as complex as security breach is about to be

and i way more prefer when gameves take their time and i hate when communities create this pressure to show teasers or tell release dates, i do hope they take their time to make something to the best of their ability without stressing over deadlines :)

Terra Incognita

Vladimir Nabokov (1931)

The sound of the waterfall grew more and more muffled, until it finally dissolved altogether, and we moved on through the wildwood of a hitherto unexplored region. We walked, and had been walking, for a long time already—in front, Gregson and I; our eight native porters behind, one after the other; last of all, whining and protesting at every step, came Cook. I knew that Gregson had recruited him on the advice of a local hunter. Cook had insisted that he was ready to do anything to get out of Zonraki, where they pass half the year brewing their von-gho and the other half drinking it. It remained unclear, however—or else I was already beginning to forget many things, as we walked on and on—exactly who this Cook was (a runaway sailor, perhaps?).

Gregson strode on beside me, sinewy, lanky, with bare, bony knees. He held a long-handled green butterfly net like a banner. The porters, big, glossy-brown Badonians with thick manes of hair and cobalt arabesques between their eyes, whom we had also engaged in Zonraki, walked with a strong, even step. Behind them straggled Cook, bloated, red-haired, with a drooping underlip, hands in pockets and carrying nothing. I recalled vaguely that at the outset of the expedition he had chattered a lot and made obscure jokes, in a manner he had, a mixture of insolence and servility, reminiscent of a Shakespearean clown; but soon his spirits fell and he grew glum and began to neglect his duties, which included interpreting, since Gregson’s understanding of the Badonian dialect was still poor.

There was something languorous and velvety about the heat. A stifling fragrance came from the inflorescences of Vallieria mirifica, mother-of-pearl in color and resembling clusters of soap bubbles, that arched across the narrow, dry streambed along which we proceeded. The branches of porphyroferous trees intertwined with those of the black-leafed limia to form a tunnel, penetrated here and there by a ray of hazy light. Above, in the thick mass of vegetation, among brilliant pendulous racemes and strange dark tangles of some kind, hoary monkeys snapped and chattered, while a cometlike bird flashed like Bengal light, crying out in its small, shrill voice. I kept telling myself that my head was heavy from the long march, the heat, the medley of colors, and the forest din, but secretly I knew that I was ill. I surmised it to be the local fever. I had resolved, however, to conceal my condition from Gregson, and had assumed a cheerful, even merry air, when disaster struck.

“It’s my fault,” said Gregson. “I should never have got involved with him.”

We were now alone. Cook and all eight of the natives, with tent, folding boat, supplies, and collections, had deserted us and vanished noiselessly while we busied ourselves in the thick bush, chasing fascinating insects. I think we tried to catch up with the fugitives—I do not recall clearly, but, in any case, we failed. We had to decide whether to return to Zonraki or continue our projected itinerary, across as yet unknown country, toward the Gurano Hills. The unknown won out. We moved on. I was already shivering all over and deafened by quinine, but still went on collecting nameless plants, while Gregson, though fully realizing the danger of our situation, continued catching butterflies and diptera as avidly as ever.

We had scarcely walked half a mile when suddenly Cook overtook us. His shirt was torn—apparently by himself, deliberately—and he was panting and gasping. Without a word Gregson drew his revolver and prepared to shoot the scoundrel, but he threw himself at Gregson’s feet and, shielding his head with both arms, began to swear that the natives had led him away by force and had wanted to eat him (which was a lie, for the Badonians are not cannibals). I suspect that he had easily incited them, stupid and timorous as they were, to abandon the dubious journey, but had not taken into account that he could not keep up with their powerful stride and, having fallen hopelessly behind, had returned to us. Because of him invaluable collections were lost. He had to die. But Gregson put away the revolver and we moved on, with Cook wheezing and stumbling behind.

The woods were gradually thinning. I was tormented by strange hallucinations. I gazed at the weird tree trunks, around some of which were coiled thick, flesh-colored snakes; suddenly I thought I saw, between the trunks, as though through my fingers, the mirror of a half-open wardrobe with dim reflections, but then I took hold of myself, looked more carefully, and found that it was only the deceptive glimmer of an acreana bush (a curly plant with large berries resembling plump prunes). After a while the trees parted altogether and the sky rose before us like a solid wall of blue. We were at the top of a steep incline. Below shimmered and steamed an enormous marsh, and, far beyond, one distinguished the tremulous silhouette of a mauve-colored range of hills.

“I swear to God we must turn back,” said Cook in a sobbing voice. “I swear to God we’ll perish in these swamps—I’ve got seven daughters and a dog at home. Let’s turn back—we know the way.…”

He wrung his hands, and the sweat rolled from his fat, red-browed face. “Home, home,” he kept repeating. “You’ve caught enough bugs. Let’s go home!”

Gregson and I began to descend the stony slope. At first Cook remained standing above, a small white figure against the monstrously green background of forest; but suddenly he threw up his hands, uttered a cry, and started to slither down after us.

The slope narrowed, forming a rocky crest that reached out like a long promontory into the marshes; they sparkled through the steamy haze. The noonday sky, now freed of its leafy veils, hung oppressively over us with its blinding darkness—yes, its blinding darkness, for there is no other way to describe it. I tried not to look up; but in this sky, at the very verge of my field of vision, there floated, always keeping up with me, whitish phantoms of plaster, stucco curlicues and rosettes, like those used to adorn European ceilings; however, I had only to look directly at them and they would vanish, and again the tropical sky would boom, as it were, with even, dense blueness. We were still walking along the rocky promontory, but it kept tapering and betraying us. Around it grew golden marsh reeds, like a million bared swords gleaming in the sun. Here and there flashed elongated pools, and over them hung dark swarms of midges. A large swamp flower, presumably an orchid, stretched toward me its drooping, downy lip, which seemed smeared with egg yolk. Gregson swung his net—and sank to his hips in the brocaded ooze as a gigantic swallowtail, with a flap of its satin wing, sailed away from him over the reeds, toward the shimmer of pale emanations where the indistinct folds of a window curtain seemed to hang. I must not, I said to myself, I must not.… I shifted my gaze and walked on beside Gregson, now over rock, now across hissing and lip-smacking soil. I felt chills, in spite of the greenhouse heat. I foresaw that in a moment I would collapse altogether, that the contours and convexities of delirium, showing through the sky and through the golden reeds, would gain complete control of my consciousness. At times Gregson and Cook seemed to grow transparent, and I thought I saw, through them, wallpaper with an endlessly repeated design of reeds. I took hold of myself, strained to keep my eyes open, and moved on. Cook by now was crawling on all fours, yelling, and snatching at Gregson’s legs, but the latter would shake him off and keep walking. I looked at Gregson, at his stubborn profile, and felt, to my horror, that I was forgetting who Gregson was, and why I was with him.

Meanwhile we kept sinking into the ooze more and more frequently, deeper and deeper; the insatiable mire would suck at us; and, wriggling, we would slip free. Cook kept falling down and crawling, covered with insect bites, all swollen and soaked, and, dear God, how he would squeal when disgusting bevies of minute, bright-green hydrotic snakes, attracted by our sweat, would take off in pursuit of us, tensing and uncoiling to sail two yards and then another two. I, however, was much more frightened by something else: now and then, on my left (always, for some reason, on my left), listing among the repetitious reeds, what seemed a large armchair but was actually a strange, cumbersome gray amphibian, whose name Gregson refused to tell me, would rise out of the swamp.

“A break,” said Gregson abruptly, “let’s take a break.”

By a stroke of luck we managed to scramble onto an islet of rock, surrounded by the swamp vegetation. Gregson took off his knapsack and issued us some native patties, smelling of ipecacuanha, and a dozen acreana fruit. How thirsty I was, and how little help was the scanty, astringent juice of the acreana.…

“Look, how odd,” Gregson said to me, not in English, but in some other language, so that Cook would not understand. “We must get through to the hills, but look, how odd—could the hills have been a mirage?—they are no longer visible.”

I raised myself up from my pillow and leaned my elbow on the resilient surface of the rock.… Yes, it was true that the hills were no longer visible; there was only the quivering vapor hanging over the marsh. Once again everything around me assumed an ambiguous transparency. I leaned back and said softly to Gregson, “You probably can’t see, but something keeps trying to come through.”

“What are you talking about?” asked Gregson.

I realized that what I was saying was nonsense and stopped. My head was spinning and there was a humming in my ears; Gregson, down on one knee, rummaged through his knapsack, but found no medicine there, and my supply was exhausted. Cook sat in silence, morosely picking at a rock. Through a rent in his shirtsleeve there showed a strange tattoo on his arm: a crystal tumbler with a teaspoon, very well executed.

“Vallière is sick—haven’t you got some tablets?” Gregson said to him. I did not hear the exact words, but I could guess the general sense of their talk, which would grow absurd and somehow spherical when I tried to listen more closely.

Cook turned slowly and the glassy tattoo slid off his skin to one side, remaining suspended in midair; then it floated off, floated off, and I pursued it with my frightened gaze, but, as I turned away, it lost itself in the vapor of the swamp, with a last faint gleam.

“Serves you right,” muttered Cook. “It’s just too bad. The same will happen to you and me. Just too bad.…”

In the course of the last few minutes—that is, ever since we had stopped to rest on the rocky islet—he seemed to have grown larger, had swelled, and there was now something mocking and dangerous about him. Gregson took off his sun helmet and, pulling out a dirty handkerchief, wiped his forehead, which was orange over the brows, and white above that. Then he put on his helmet again, leaned over to me, and said, “Pull yourself together, please” (or words to that effect). “We shall try to move on. The vapor is hiding the hills, but they are there. I am certain we have covered about half the swamp.” (This is all very approximate.)

“Murderer,” said Cook under his breath. The tattoo was now again on his forearm; not the entire glass, though, but one side of it—there was not quite enough room for the remainder, which quivered in space, casting reflections. “Murderer,” Cook repeated with satisfaction, raising his inflamed eyes. “I told you we would get stuck here. Black dogs eat too much carrion. Mi, re, fa, sol.”

“He’s a clown,” I softly informed Gregson, “a Shakespearean clown.”

“Clow, clow, clow,” Gregson answered, “clow, clow—clo, clo, clo.… Do you hear,” he went on, shouting in my ear. “You must get up. We have to move on.”

The rock was as white and as soft as a bed. I raised myself a little, but promptly fell back on the pillow.

“We shall have to carry him,” said Gregson’s faraway voice. “Give me a hand.”

“Fiddlesticks,” replied Cook (or so it sounded to me). “I suggest we enjoy some fresh meat before he dries up. Fa, sol, mi, re.”

“He’s sick, he’s sick too,” I cried to Gregson. “You’re here with two lunatics. Go ahead alone. You’ll make it.… Go.”

“Fat chance we’ll let him go,” said Cook.

Meanwhile delirious visions, taking advantage of the general confusion, were quietly and firmly finding their places. The lines of a dim ceiling stretched and crossed in the sky. A large armchair rose, as if supported from below, out of the swamp. Glossy birds flew through the haze of the marsh and, as they settled, one turned into the wooden knob of a bedpost, another into a decanter. Gathering all my willpower, I focused my gaze and drove off this dangerous trash. Above the reeds flew real birds with long flame-colored tails. The air buzzed with insects. Gregson was waving away a varicolored fly, and at the same time trying to determine its species. Finally he could contain himself no longer and caught it in his net. His motions underwent curious changes, as if someone kept reshuffling them. I saw him in different poses simultaneously; he was divesting himself of himself, as if he were made of many glass Gregsons whose outlines did not coincide. Then he condensed again, and stood up firmly. He was shaking Cook by the shoulder.

“You are going to help me carry him,” Gregson was saying distinctly. “If you were not a traitor, we would not be in this mess.”

Cook remained silent, but slowly flushed purple.

“See here, Cook, you’ll regret this,” said Gregson. “I’m telling you for the last time—”

At this point occurred what had been ripening for a long time. Cook drove his head like a bull into Gregson’s stomach. They both fell; Gregson had time to get his revolver out, but Cook managed to knock it out of his hand. Then they clutched each other and started rolling in their embrace, panting deafeningly. I looked at them, helpless. Cook’s broad back would grow tense and the vertebrae would show through his shirt; but suddenly, instead of his back, a leg, also his, would appear, covered with coppery hairs, and with a blue vein running up the skin, and Gregson was rolling on top of him. Gregson’s helmet flew off and wobbled away, like half of an enormous cardboard egg. From somewhere in the labyrinth of their bodies Cook’s fingers wriggled out, clenching a rusty but sharp knife; the knife entered Gregson’s back as if it were clay, but Gregson only gave a grunt, and they both rolled over several times; when I next saw my friend’s back the handle and top half of the blade protruded, while his hands had locked around Cook’s thick neck, which crunched as he squeezed, and Cook’s legs were twitching. They made one last full revolution, and now only a quarter of the blade was visible—no, a fifth—no, now not even that much showed: it had entered completely. Gregson grew still after having piled on top of Cook, who had also become motionless.

I watched, and it seemed to me (fogged as my senses were by fever) that this was all a harmless game, that in a moment they would get up and, when they had caught their breath, would peacefully carry me off across the swamp toward the cool blue hills, to some shady place with babbling water. But suddenly, at this last stage of my mortal illness—for I knew that in a few minutes I would die—in these final minutes everything grew completely lucid: I realized that all that was taking place around me was not the trick of an inflamed imagination, not the veil of delirium, through which unwelcome glimpses of my supposedly real existence in a distant European city (the wallpaper, the armchair, the glass of lemonade) were trying to show. I realized that the obtrusive room was fictitious, since everything beyond death is, at best, fictitious: an imitation of life hastily knocked together, the furnished rooms of nonexistence. I realized that reality was here, here beneath that wonderful, frightening tropical sky, among those gleaming swordlike reeds, in that vapor hanging over them, and in the thick-lipped flowers clinging to the flat islet, where, beside me, lay two clinched corpses. And, having realized this, I found within me the strength to crawl over to them and pull the knife from the back of Gregson, my leader, my dear friend. He was dead, quite dead, and all the little bottles in his pockets were broken and crushed. Cook, too, was dead, and his ink-black tongue protruded from his mouth. I pried open Gregson’s fingers and turned his body over. His lips were half-open and bloody; his face, which already seemed hardened, appeared badly shaven; the bluish whites of his eyes showed between the lids. For the last time I saw all this distinctly, consciously, with the seal of authenticity on everything—their skinned knees, the bright flies circling over them, the females of those flies already seeking a spot for oviposition. Fumbling with my enfeebled hands, I took a thick notebook out of my shirt pocket, but here I was overcome by weakness; I sat down and my head drooped. And yet I conquered this impatient fog of death and looked around. Blue air, heat, solitude.… And how sorry I felt for Gregson, who would never return home—I even remembered his wife and the old cook, and his parrots, and many other things. Then I thought about our discoveries, our precious finds, the rare, still undescribed plants and animals that now would never be named by us. I was alone. Hazier flashed the reeds, dimmer flamed the sky. My eyes followed an exquisite beetle that was crawling across a stone, but I had no strength left to catch it. Everything around me was fading, leaving bare the scenery of death—a few pieces of realistic furniture and four walls. My last motion was to open the book, which was damp with my sweat, for I absolutely had to make a note of something; but, alas, it slipped out of my hand. I groped all along the blanket, but it was no longer there.

Final Thoughts - 2019 Long Shows

Dear Lord. This is where all the good shows went.

2019 was absolutely awful on a season-by-season basis (except for Summer, anyway), but that’s mostly because most of the best shows ran longer than what has become the industry norm of a single season. And indeed, heading into the new decade, we seem to be seeing a major renaissance for two- or split-cour shows, given the massive success seen by shows like My Hero Academia, Food Wars, and Haikyuu!!..particularly in comparison to the new perpetual-runners Black Clover (which, despite running for over two straight years now, is still not the most popular show of Fall 2017 by viewer count on MAL, and sits at a ‘meh’ 7.2), and even worse, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, which is faring even worse on both counts even though it premiered two whole seasons earlier and the fact that it is the sequel to Naruto.

As a reminder of my rules, the shows on this list may or may not have premiered in 2019, but they finished airing this year. The split-cour rule (stating that I judge any show that “finishes” and then premieres a “new season” within six months) didn’t come into play for any 2018 shows, but it will for Ascendance of a Bookworm and Food Wars this year, at the very least.

With that being said! 25 shows running longer than thirteen episodes finished airing this year after being simulcast, and of those…

I skipped 6:

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part V: Golden Wind, Fairy Tail Final Series, A Certain Magical Index III, Ace Attorney Season 2 and Cardfight Vanguard (2018) because I either dropped or have not finished their previous (also long-running) seasons.

Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS because the simulcast started late and also it was bad.

Worst Long Show of 2019: The Rising of the Shield Hero

It’s always fun to see that a show you hated from its first episode only gets more and more distasteful afterwards, but it’s less fun when a service you have to promote because they’re the legal option is forced to shove it down your throat because they had a hand in making it and it became a massive hit that your friends don’t see any issue with because the author wrote a story that justifies its hero’s patronage of the slave industry. This is my punishment for watching the whole first season of The Asterisk War before I knew better.

YU-NO: A girl who chants love at the bound of this world

A confusing mess from the word go, this ill-fated adaptation of a visual novel from the nineties seems like it was mostly made to cash in on the popularity of the Science Adventure series, but failed to present itself in a way that made an ounce of sense or looked remotely interesting.

Fairy Gone

Am I really the only one that saw potential here? I mean yes, it ended up a boring slog that didn’t care to move its plot in a meaningful direction, but the first episode was at least cool. I guess Izetta: The Last Witch should have taught me better.

We Never Learn

I know that I’m in the minority in terms of the male demographic for shows like this, but honestly, how are bland harem shows still this easy to market? A copy-pasted protagonist with copy-pasted waifus drag down what could be an interesting setup for a story.

Karakuri Circus

The first episode of this one had me excited, the second and third left me bored to tears and wondering if it would continue to look uglier by the minute. I haven’t seen a three-cour show look this janky since Knight in the Area.

Radiant

Having heard good things about this show from my cohorts, I do feel bad for saying I’ll probably never return to Radiant, but when you have a show that’s notably written by a European author...and it turns out to be a frustratingly standard shounen affair with middling production values, well, you can see my earlier annoyance with Cannon Busters.

Ensemble Stars

This one still gets to me. It almost looked like a male-idol show I would finally be able to get behind, what with its rebellious attitude and oddball setting...that is, until the setting got to be too unbelievable and the show began drowning its audience in side-characters because they had to squeeze every husbando from the mobile game into the story, and it all began to resemble UtaPri a little too much...but without the production value.

Boogiepop and Others

This was a hard drop, honestly. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I felt four episodes in, before concluding that I was bored and not particularly invested, two things that should never describe the experience of watching a Madhouse show. The fact that this was the project responsible for ruining One Punch Man only made it worse. There’s a slow burn, and then there’s walking away without turning the stove on.

And I Finished 11 (holy crap that’s like three hundred episodes just on their own).

That Time I Was Reincarnated as a Slime (5/10 & 1/10)

I’ll be honest, I had forgotten just how livid I was with the ending (and especially the sad excuse of a recap episode) of Slimesekai, and reading back through my write-up of it, it’s certainly coming back to me. While this year had bigger demons to fight (Shield Hero), the bad taste that Slime left me with hasn’t really faded, and the wasted premise bugs me to this day.

Hinomaru Sumo (7/10)

What Hinomaru lacked in production value, it happily made up for in good execution and earnest heart. I can’t believe this came from the same studio as Conception, Try Knights and 7Seeds, but if they can only get out one good show a year, I’m glad that we got one bringing attention to a sport that many will joke about but few understand, respect and appreciate.

Kono Oto Tomare (7/10)

Speaking of giving love to traditional Japanese culture, here’s a decent-if-unoriginal show about a local high school koto club down on their luck, and the troubled teens coming together under a scrappy protagonist to bring it back to life. Kono Oto Tomare doesn’t have much that you haven’t seen before, but a decently-executed club drama with Your Lie In April-inspired musical performances is more than enough to keep me interested, and since Forest of Piano kinda crashed and burned under the weight of its own self-importance this year, it was nice to have an alternative.

MIX: Meisei Story (8/10)

It’s hard to judge MIX next to the other shows on this list because it’s almost too old-school for its own good, revelling in an eighties storytelling style that didn’t end up jiving with a wide audience this year. But at the same time, its fun character dynamics (and a very good dub from Funimation, despite them saying they’d never touch sports anime again) were very entertaining to watch, even if it didn’t focus as much on the sport it was supposedly about as much as I’d have liked.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (8/10)

I fully admit that I’m very salty about the fact that this won Show of the Decade in Funimation’s poll while it was still on and I thought there were hundreds of more deserving shows, but I can’t deny that Demon Slayer was a very enjoyable experience, albeit one that I had notable problems with. That’s not gonna stop me from getting mad when it sweeps the Anime Awards in a few weeks, though.

Fire Force (8/10)

I was very afraid that David Productions wouldn’t be able to match the energy of Studio Bones’ adaptation of Ohkubo’s previous work, Soul Eater, but I was happy to be proven wrong. Even if the last few episodes contained a bit too much infodumping, it was all sandwiched between jaw-dropping fight scenes that proved that the people who make Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure can still handle the reins of a more traditional action show.

Fruits Basket 1st Season (8/10)

I know that my score for this one is a bit lower than others, but I think that Fruits Basket did pretty well in its first season, considering that it was largely spent setting up future storylines and adapting the part of the manga we’d all seen before, but with much higher production value. I’ve been familiar with this part of the story for over a decade, and the scene with Tohru and Kyo (you know the one) still made me cry. Now, we get the real plot going.

Dr Stone (9/10)

A great start to a totally new spin on shounen, Dr Stone gives me hope for survival in the post-Shokugeki world in which we’ll soon live, as a show that wears its research on its sleeve. A complex plot weaving interesting characters in and out of a narrative surrounding a philosophical battle where both sides actually do have fair points (even if one of them is going about it in a pretty cruel manner). More please.

Vinland Saga (9/10)

Once again, a great start to what will hopefully be years of quality storytelling, Vinland Saga made it seem like it was dragging in the middle only to reveal just what its slow burn had been leading up to, with twist-heavy storytelling and a fantastic cast to match the high visual quality of its brutal battles.

Run With the Wind (9/10)

It’s not often that Production I.G. gets to make a complete, fully-realized show anymore, and this one was a glorious reminder of the potential of the studio in the TV space, and a great rebound for the director of Joker Game. It’s gorgeous to look at, the cast is wonderful, and the story is both realistic and idealistic in a satisfying balance. It’s a miserable process to get to the finish line in real life, but sitting back and watching this was nothing but a treat. At least, until a minor fumble at the end.

Best Long Show of 2019: Dororo (9/10)

Speaking of complete stories, Tezuka Productions and MAPPA teamed up for a breathtaking adaptation of an underappreciated Tezuka classic that expands upon the story in exactly the right way to create a thrilling, savage, beautiful masterpiece that focuses a laser-sharp eye into the relationship between two characters in their journey to, literally and figuratively, become complete people. Also, that opening was killer.

This moment when you wonder why there never was a slavic or another targeted by holocaust superhero (not american) who was the face of fighting Nazis.

[This post was written like... so many months ago. Maybe even a year ago, and it was sitting in my drafts and I just said “fuck it” and decided to publish it.]

You know what bugs me about Captain America outside the fact that MCU Steve is made in such a way that it’s hard to not accuse him of doing bad things under the misguided sense of self-righteousness and justice? That Captain America as an idea is associated with fighting Nazis. I mean I do not dislike the idea as Steve Rogers as a character at the same time represents the people whom Nazi would kill in his pre-serum state (ill people were considered faulty, Nazi ideology was halfly based on eugenics ideology so Steve before serum was likely candidate to be killed) and a mockery of an Aryan ideal man in his after-serum state (because he looks like the “ideal of race” and fights Nazis, it’s pretty ironic) because of course America also fought in WWII, but they joined pretty late, and I cannot stress how cool it would be if the superhero associated with fighting Nazis was in fact not American.

Because you see, my whole country’s history is always taught by the lens of WWII, because we were the ones who were invaded when the WWII started (and let me tell you, this history is taught as if we were martyrs on pair with Jesus, and it is annoying as fuck, because no, polish people weren’t only victims of the war, this was so tragic that people who should know better who should fight with it, often joined in on committing atrocities, some people were hiding Jews, some were heartlessly giving their locations up, living in camps was even worse, people were there and even though there were acts of kindness here and there people had to live in this reality in which everybody fends for themselves, in which they had to help around the newcomers leaving the trains and couldn’t even tell them that half of them will be dead before they even enter the camp or warn them, because they would be killed, they had to either be quiet or lie to those people to not scare them and don’t let them try to escape or panic [at first nobody really knew that death camps were death camps, people were told those were places when they can find a job and came in with hope, but then it turned out to be a lie, Nazis often masked death camps as those zones for Jews and non-german people where they were happy, but it was all a cover-up and later on a lot of people who were in the trains knew they were going to their deaths, mothers who just gave birth were killing their infant babies so Nazis wouldn’t be the ones who kill them - it was an act of mercy even though it was horrific] and I cannot even imagine how the people who survived the camps felt when they remembered that they were expected to help SSmans in their daily work), so wouldn’t it be nice if someone at Marvel came with the idea of polish superhero (polish Jew or polish Romani superhero for example or someone else, some other European victim of nasizm like german Jews or Romani ppl in general or gay people from different countries than Poland and Germany etc.) helping our underground army fight of the Nazis? That would be nice to see.

It would be a very tragic story though, showing that even if you have an enhanced person fighting Nazis, you won’t be able to just win the war single-handedly. This character would suffer a lot, they would see deaths and atrocities of WWII, they would see victims of death camps, the experiments and such, probably being one of the victims themselves, have to deal with failures, because that’s what war looks like. Even with an enhanced the efforts to take over the country back could fail and the superhero would then learn that their innate strength and their purpose isn’t something so easily achievable. So it wouldn’t be second Captain America, because Captain, to my information, never lost to Nazis. I dunno, maybe he did, but he is mostly known for winning, while in truth fighting Nazis is something more than sticking a shield into Red Skull’s face, or saving soldiers from the other side of the enemy line. It’s a tragedy.

Maybe that’s the reason why there never was a hero like that? Because it would be too depressing to see it all, or maybe because Marvel doesn’t have access to all the diaries and historical stuff we polish people have, written by survivors who shared their experiences and reality of living during the war under the Nazi rule?

This post was written before I knew who Isaiah Bradley was, and even in his case, he was just a side story. Nobody cared enough to show the atrocities of WWII, or they were afraid to do it, because it is gut-wrenching and scary.

Still, if Isaiah was Captain America instead of Steve Rogers I would still have an issue that he was the American hero send to help those “helpless slavic, Jewish, Romani etc. ppl”, but he would be at least better than the walking ideal of Aryan race which Steve was, even if Steve’s look is supposed to be mocking Nazis.

Why he would be better? Because he is black, because he was not treated right, because he was forged in pain, and he saw death camps from the inside. Am I too fatalistic to want a hero who was forged by the holocaust? Maybe. But I want them, because you cannot be a face of fighting Nazis without actually suffering by their hands. And Steve never did suffer the same as survivors did. The people who did suffer were never made into heroes. Ask Magneto.
