Reccer Says: It's just SO beautiful. Every word feels gilded or done up in the cosmetics that cover Marion's vanity. The whole thing is poetry, not least of all the relationship between Yussa and Marion. They're so sweet and you can feel the affection they have for each other in every sentence. The way they banter and tease each other is adorable and Viet's voice for Yussa is also just so fun (let that old man say fuck! XD) Also, the way the title ties into the fic is just so sweet.

Reccer Says: It's a very niche ship written in a way that feels very authentic to the characters. It also completely got me onboard to the possibilities of said ship! As well as that, it's just a well written, very sweet fic. A great way to get acquainted with what is probably one of Vox Machina's rarest pairings.

Takes place in Xhorhas between the time Yeza is rescued and the time they’re able to relocate him; a very sweet fic about Yeza slowly falling for and awkwardly romancing the Wizard boyfriend his wife picked up on the road.

Reccer 1 Says: I loooooove Yeza's characterization his dynamic with not just Veth and Caleb but the rest of the nein is great Reccer 2 Says: I always love any story fleshing out Yeza and his personality+motivations, and this one does it so well! His patience and kindness in letting Nott persue Caleb, and then his own developing feelings, are just so endearing and fun to read about.

It's from Bloodlust by aeseaes! https://open.spotify.com/track/22aWj2uWr472GZSqPseUIW The fic is surprise surprise, Astrid Critical Role centric, but this time I managed to involve the entire rest of the party + Essek. It is entirely too ambitious.

Originally, it was supposed to just be a 5+1 about Astrid, Wulf, and Essek (5 times Astrid and Eadwulf almost got their mans, 1 time they did is literally the first line in the doc) but it has since snowballed into everyone's brawling in Eiselcross, Essek manages to down Astrid, Wulf revivifies her, but that's distracting enough to let Essek nab him and leave her for dead. And wouldn't you know it, the M9 were right over that hill...

So it splits into Astrid being helped by the M9 and having a miserable time contextualizing her relationships / fending off the do gooders and Wulf and Essek speedrunning enemies to lovers while both explaining loudly that they know how this works, they torture people for a living, ain't nobody falling in love tonight.

I get to let Astrid be the least hinged about everything and I love it so much (and recently found a way to structure it more en media res which gets me posting sooner) crumbs for my esswulf friends

“It won’t work.” Essek inclines his head. “You think you have me now, get the others to torture me just so you can waltz in and offer me food and bandage. It won’t work. I’ve done this before. I’ve done worse. It won’t work.” Essek dabs at the corner of Eadwulf’s mouth, then offers up the spoon again. “You protest very loudly for someone who knows how these things work.”

I shared the entire essek confrontation complete with feral dog snarling once... And the other instance of unhingedness is in shambles, so here's this

“I will kill him.” Astrid silences the table once again. “It won’t matter what I promise you now, if anything has happened to Eadwulf I will end Essek Thelyss and anyone else who has had a hand in it.” “Because you love him?” The halfling woman asks. It seems an odd question for the moment. Astrid finds herself looking at Caleb again, first because she thinks she’s searching for what she’s missed, why this was the next logical question to ask, but then because he out of all of them needed to hear what she said next. “Because he’s all I have.”

Reccer Says: With respect to the rarepair, I think it's a fun dynamic. fruitzbat does a really good job of capturing all of those weird, uncomfortable nooks and crannies that come with new relationships. And I think most importantly, Kingsley really stretches his wings as his own person. There is such a clear vision of what he's like and how that's distinct from Molly and Lucien, and that clearness really carries throughout both this piece and the rest of the series.

Reccer Says: It's heartaching and sweet in equal measures. The atmosphere is beautiful and suits it so well. Molly and Jester fit together so well, like the softest of puzzle pieces, if that makes sense. Their relationship feels natural and you can sense the strength of their bond in each moment. It's got some wonderful mentions of Jester's struggle with being the Happy One and Molly having lost so much time while his friends have grown as well, on top of all of the other deliciously angsty feelings the two of them are coping with.

I did this to myself when I posted it.... under the cut to hide my shame

this one is in the Her Name Is Ellie AU, after the main fic. Essek and Wulf invite Caleb to join them in bed, because they've been having feelings about their daughter being all grown up and wanting a new baby. The problem is that Essek can't have another child (Ellie was created with magic mpreg and is cis in this AU), but they can roleplay Wulf and Caleb trying really hard to knock Essek up. I've also toyed with the idea of Wulf (and volstrucker in general) being castrated after graduation to make sure they have "no family but the assembly" and including Caleb adds at least a little bit of legitimacy to the fantasy.

“Is adoption not an option?” Caleb asks carefully. “Of course!” Essek replies, quickly, like he needs to reassure Caleb. “But that’s not exactly what this is about.” Essek looks off into the middle distance with his shoulders once again tensed. Wulf gives him a gentle squeeze, but he doesn’t relax. Concern fills Wulf’s eyes and he whispers to his husband, “Is this a secret?” Still looking away, Essek shakes his head. “Can you… Would you tell him?” he asks, his voice almost breaking. Wulf nods and whispers to Essek, “Of course,” before turning his attention to Caleb. In Zemnian, he explains, “<i>It’s also about everything we missed with Ellie.</i>” Caleb feels his heart clench at the emotion in his old friend’s voice. There’s love and optimism in it, but there’s also grief. “<i>I didn’t get to be there when Essek was pregnant with Ellie, I didn’t get to take care of him, cook whatever he was craving, rub his feet when they got swollen, hold his hand during her birth. It also wasn’t a good time for Essek. It was traumatic. But you knows this.</i>” In Wulf’s arms, Essek stays barely present, listening but not understanding anything beyond his and Ellie’s names. Caleb can tell from the distant, pained look in his eyes, that he has a general idea what Wulf is telling him and that he’s grateful to not have to say it himself, or even hear it. Wulf must notice him staring, because he takes one of Caleb’s hands and slips it into one of Essek’s, who squeezes it and looks up to see who’s hand it is. Essek gives him the same bittersweet smile he always does when he’s thinking about Ellie’s origins before looking away again. 

While I'm at it: Evil with a capital E is the follow up to this where, SURPRISE, Caleb did actually get Essek mpregged, but, due to the shit job of Ellie's c-section, the pregnancy isn't safe for Essek and everyone has to angst about it.

I really miss this ship. I gotta go and write some more Essek/Caleb/Wulf fics. Maybe I'll do a sequal to the waltzing one. But for now! A Drabble!

“You’re hurt.” Caleb looked up right in time to see Eadwulf pick Essek up, bridal style, to carry him over to where their bags, and thus the potions were. Aside from the quietest little meep, Essek said nothing about the assistance. But Caleb could see every single minute twitch of those long ears and the rapidly spreading blush that spread across the drow’s face. He had a feeling Wulf noticed them too, if his smug smirk was any indication. “I didn’t realize that you liked being carried so much, Essek,” Caleb chuckled fondly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
