Wulf lets go of Essek’s chin so he can shy away. Caleb immediately understands that they both know Essek won’t be able to say this part if he has to look. He’s struck by just how well they know each other, how perfectly in sync they are with each other’s needs. Wulf’s hold on Essek also loosens, making an opening for Essek to run away if he gets too embarrassed. His cheeks flush dramatically and Caleb reaches out to stroke a single finger down one. “Take your time,” Caleb says in a measured voice. He gives Essek his softest smile and Wulf looks at him with approval that makes Caleb’s heart flutter.

At this, Esseks’ eyes go wide and his nostrils flair with genuine anger. Eadwulf’s hand at his cheek moves down to grab him by the jaw and knock his head back against the wall. He justifies it to himself as a kinder cruelty now to spare them both something worse later. Essek can't sleep. He's on the run from the Empire and the Dynasty with a Scourger who saved his life and asks nothing in return. It's too good to be true. He can't trust it.

From a document currently titled "Werewolf Wulf/Investigative journalist Essek"

Essek takes the need to retrieve his belongings to escape their sharp gaze and follows Odel to the trunk of the car. Odel again picks up the Smith Corona, but, instead of handing it to Essek, she begins to carry it to the farmhouse. Gripping the larger, black suitcase, Essek follows.  “Hope you brought somethin’ other fancy suits, Mr. Thelyss,” Mx. Thrash comments as they lead Essek and Odel inside and up the stairs to a sparse spare room. The little tiefling child follows their parent every step.

"Gripping" is the best I've got, it seems! Thank you very much for the ask and giving me the chance to show off!
