YO SO I AM VERY INTRIGUED
You guys know I come from Corsica right ? The French island just over Sardinia, in the Mediterranean sea
So while rewatching a clip from the Greek Mythology episode to simp for admire gaze at lovingly sighing get references from Pandora as Medusa, I noticed that what I had thought to be pearl earrings are actually not pearls but little spirally things, like round shells with spiral patterns
Tumblr media
It intrigues me because small round white shells with spirals are actually a thing, the Eyes of Saint Lucia. They are from the Mediterranean sea, but mainly, MAINLY from Corsica in which they are said to protect and are used as lucky charms jewelry, so some suppose that when we find them elsewhere they were just carried away by animals, currents etc but are actually endemic of Corsica
Tumblr media
And you see, if you remember well, Greek mythology took account of most of the Mediterranean sea in their legends using real places for myths. Egypt, current Turkey... and especially places that used to be colonized fully or partly by Greeks such as Sicily, Southern Italy, and of course Corsica. And in case you didn't know, the canibals who attacked and ate Odysseus' men probably were from Bonifacio at the very south end of Corsica, and many sources (at least Corsican sources) come to the conclusion the 3 gorgons, Medusa among them, were in Corsica. And despite being a monster that turnt a lot of people and animals into stones and who is according to the Corsican legends that were forgotten by the Greek mainland the reason behind so many rocks in the shape of animals or people we can randomly find at different wild places of the island, Medusa also was a symbol of protection. Probably echoing to the very very early ancient Greek legends/religion that depicted her as an actual goddess instead of a monster, and the goddess of Protection at that
Tumblr media
Which Corsica remembered to this day. Medusa may habe been imported, but to this day her myth stayed to the locals and important points even remained while forgotten by the Greeks, to the point some even nickname her the Queen of Corsica despite being also a source of danger if you came too close to her. What important points ? The fact she was seen as a Goddess of Protection and protected people from danger petrifying demons and attackers with her eyes aside, a myth was remembered and is deeply embedded in Corsican culture (when I told my mythology-History buff Greek friend about it, he was amazed and awe struck that we had this myth and no longer them) : when Perseus beheaded Medusa, her blood ran down the sea and reached seaweed. The seaweed was colored red from the blood, and being the blood of a gorgon they hardened like rock. They became corals. And because that gorgon blood belonged to the Protection gorgon, coral was filled with her power and became another powerful luckycharm just as much as Saint Lucia Eyes, people even gifting a tiny coral hand generally on a necklace to babies to protect them. Both coral and Saint Lucia Eyes notably protect against the Ochju, the "Evil Eye" that id NOT a superstitious myth but a reality, very complex, most Corsican people such as me (I always wear a coral bracelet) believe in it and know it is real but proofs and explaining how it works and what is that Ochju would take way too long to explain in that post and go out of subject
Tumblr media
So yeah Eyes of Lucia are not linked to Medusa per say, but they are from Corsica like she was supposed to be and just like her and her coral have a protection power making it 2 common points. If Medusa had truely existed, gorgon or not, she must have seen Eyes of Saint Lucia sometimes walking down a beach and maybe find it amusing that these little things were lucky charms as much as her presence was, and maybe found them pretty enough to wear them into jewelry to wear them like the local people, notably flattered/wanting to give a message if they had the same powers. And as wacky, cartoony and unserious as this Wacky Races reboot is, we see that Medusa/Pandora wears as jewelry what seems to be Eyes of Saint Lucia from her home island or at least somewhere in the Meditteranean if the current had brought them there ! (Even more shocking when you know that the comics indicate Penelope has Greek origins, so does Pandora then ; unsure if the writers remembered it for the reboot, but if so MAYBE they could know what these shells are...)
Tumblr media
I have absolutely no clue if this is just fate and they just tried to draw some cute spirally jewel randomly or actually knew about this Corsican shell AND that Medusa is linked to Corsica and therefore drew a little Easter egg. The first is highly possible, but the show showed several times the writers and animators were intelligent, got informed on the source material correctly before parodying it and then parody with respect, so thinking they could have learnt about that just for the sake of an Easter egg like others they put throughout the show is just as possible as a product of pure fate. And if it the case, I, a Corsican woman who loves Greek mythology, legend origins and mysteries behind beliefs, find it to be FRIDGE BRILLIANCE !
Tumblr media
*EDIT*
What gives me hope is they KNEW something not a lot of people know especially Americans because it is very rarely depicted in media. In the episode Dick Dastardly is Pluto (dunno why they chose the Roman name of Hades, but...). And he has a scepter... which is not really a known feature of Hades ! So if they could get informed for that one obscure detail, why not the other !?
