Fountain Paint Pots, Yellowstone National Park, 2023

One of the things I love so much about Yellowstone is how dramatic the scenery shifts are. You have the color and spectacle of Midway and Upper Geyser Basins, and the seething anger of Norris Geyser Basin, and then you have the Fountain Paint Pots, which would feel right at home in a Fallout game. Desolate and unforgiving, with stubborn life clinging to the edges.

I maintain that anyone who wants to write about scenery on alien worlds needs to go see Yellowstone, just to see how weird shit can get on our own planet.
