Gang of Four: Pioneers of Post-Punk and Harbingers of Peace
The Gang of Four, an influential English post-punk band formed in 1976, not only revolutionized the music scene with their unique blend of punk, funk, and dub, but also conveyed powerful messages about the social and political ills of society. Their music, characterized by a raw and rhythmic complexity, often carried an undercurrent of political activism, challenging listeners to consider the…

Please please someone let Davey sing The Truth About The Moon. It would add so much more depth to his character (and you could add something else regarding him forgiving Jack after he scabbed) and it would add just more to the story in general. Like hopeless gay pining. I don’t care if Jack ends up with Katherine instead, we’re all used to canonical Jatherine anyways, but everyone would  be grateful with one sided Javid anyways, because one-sided Javid is still Javid. He could run away after the rally, like in the proshot, and then we just cut to him on the fire escape (from 92’sies) singing this. The fire escape wouldn’t even be too complicated or hard to do, just pop Ben Fankhauser on one of the large metal frame things used throughout the proshot (in case it wasn’t clear by proshot I mean the 2017 Disney+ version), or Ryan Kopel somewhere in the Troubadour (from what I heard about that theater, that also shouldn’t be too hard), or just someone, somewhere my point is that it wouldn’t be hard at all, and it would add so much more to the show, including just 3-5 more minutes! Also, it’s pretty obvious that TTATM (look mom I made an acronym) is more of a Davey song than a Sarah song. Was Sarah there when Jack betrayed the newsies? No! (At least I don’t think so) But was Davey there? Yes! Would Davey feel lied-to and betrayed? Yes! Would Dave need a whole song to process that (because he and Jack actually had a relationship, be it platonic or romantic, instead of just prolonged eye contact, barley any conversation, and maybe some aesthetic attraction), because Davey was actually part of the strike, therefore it probably felt like Jack’s betrayal had a more personal meaning/intention/whatever towards him? Yes! A thousand times yes! Also looking back at the song, I’m starting to believe that it was written for Davey, because of all the reasons I listed above, and they had to say it was the other sibling because, in case you haven’t noticed, Disney doesn’t really do gay (hate to get political but they literally supported the ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill’ until the realized “hey, this isn’t really helping our public image” and then suddenly opposed it) Look, I don’t even know who I’m trying to convince, because it’s not like any important Newsies people will see this, but still please someone let Davey Jacobs sing The Truth About The Moon. It would be awesome and great and so wonderful and just wow.

Heyo chapter 2 is here!
Summary:
“HOLY SH-” Miles and Gwen simultaneously turned to cover Pav’s mouth so as to not alert the creature in the middle of the carnage below them. The creature either didn’t hear him or it was too preoccupied with whatever it was doing. To his regret Miles soon realized what that was, as another wet snapping noise broke the silence once more. The creature was crouched down on all fours over what Miles assumed was the body of an officer, though it was so mutilated that it was hard to tell for sure. Its head was buried into the chest of the body beneath it, another wet snapping noise emerging as it pulled out a couple of ribs between its bloodied jaws... Or The Spider-Gang goes looking for Hobie. They don’t like what they find.
We finally get to meet the dude that gave me the motivation to write this fic in the first place!

“Faithfull’s voice, raggedly notched and erratic, sometimes starts flat or strikes a note that’s like a bald tire hitting a patch of glare ice. But what’s there all the time is this ripping knife of an alto, rueful and accusing and strangely vulnerable. What is in this voice? Only a few notes perhaps but a gallon of prussic acid, a season of tropical cloudbursts, the grittiest pale Northern skies, the emptiest grey hotel rooms. And endless, sleepless flights, thousands of cigarettes, Remy Martin, sex that’s the nostalgia of sex and happiness that’s just the memory of happiness. Hope that if you die before you awake you really won’t be aware of it. And the most unexpected sweetness.”
/ Gary Indiana reviewing Marianne Faithfull’s concert at the Bottom Line in NYC for The Village Voice on 15 December 1987 /
Happy birthday to exquisitely ravaged, resilient and timeless gravel-voiced art-rock diva of broken hearts (and the woman Tom Waits describes as “the aunt offering you a cigarette at a wedding when you’re 11”), Marianne Faithfull (born 29 December 1946). The closest equivalent we have to a present-day, post-punk Dietrich, Piaf or Holiday turns 77 today. Pictured: portrait by Wayne Maser, circa 1995 (around the time of her A Secret Life album). Read my 2011 interview with Faithfull here.

WIP Wednesday
From Tomorrow’s a Long Way Off (warning for discussion of “Down from Dover,” Dolly Parton’s horribly sad song about a stillbirth):
That was when Jonathan realized what was off. He’d grabbed the wrong tape. This wasn’t his punk mix or the new tape that Eric’s girlfriend’s roommate had gotten in the mail from her English pen pal. It was his mom’s country-and-western mix, the one he’d made for her birthday. It was Dolly Parton, singing about a poor pregnant girl whose boyfriend had abandoned her forever.
The hot black room faded away. Suddenly it was easier to breathe, to open his eyes and lift his head. He tried to recall if his mom had played the tape in the house recently, ignoring his and Will’s groans of protest. Maybe he’d listened to the English tape in her car, but he didn’t think so. He remembered her standing in the doorway of his bedroom, trying to place which girl group sang “Wounded.” She’d figured out that it was the Cookies, but only after guessing so many other groups that Will had chimed in with his own absurd suggestions: the Girdles, the Crustaceans, the Exorcists, the Ronalds.
Now Dolly Parton was on the last verse, the one where the baby was born dead and the girl finally realized that her boyfriend never would come down from Dover. Jonathan had general rules for putting together all mixtapes, like saving the two best songs for first and last, but he’d done something unusual for this one, mostly to entertain himself. He’d ranked the songs from saddest to happiest, and put them on the tape in that order. “Down from Dover” was the saddest, of course, so it was first. The last song was “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” also by Dolly Parton. That was cheating a little, because “The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.” by Donna Fargo was definitely happier, but he’d wanted the symmetry. Plus, the point of the tape was catharsis, and “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” was way more dramatic.
But the tape had barely started. Bobbie Gentry was singing “Fancy,” which was only a little happier than “Down from Dover.” Yet the songs had already cleared a little space in Jonathan’s mind: a strange, tiny miracle, but he’d take it.
