Gareth Southgate has plenty to ponder ahead of Friday’s game (Getty Images)Gareth Southgate and his squad of players will get their Uefa Euro 2020 qualifying campaign up and running on Friday night when they host the Czech Republic at Wembley. It will be the Three Lions’ first game of 2019 and the players will be looking to maintain their momentum from a successful 2018 in which they reached the World Cup semi-finals and secured their place in the final four of this summer’s inaugural Nations League tournament. Since steering England to their most successful World Cup since Italia ’90, Southgate has largely stuck with the nucleus of his squad in Russia although injuries and the emergence of some exciting young talents have resulted in his latest selection being freshened up somewhat. Harry Kane has scored four goals in his last five matches for Spurs (Getty Images)Of Southgate’s 23-man squad for the games against the Czech Republic and Montenegro, ten of them were not involved in the remarkable run in Russia. The average age of those ten new (or in some cases returning faces) is just 23.8. Remove 32-year-old Tom Heaton – the eldest member of the squad by four years – from the equation and it drops down to 20.6. Southgate received praise for placing his trust in youth at the World Cup with England having the third-youngest squad of the 32 teams involved and since then he has continued to promote promising players who have impressed for their respective clubs into the senior set-up. The result is that he has an abundance of exciting players to pick from in the build-up to Euro 2020, starting on Friday night… Tried and tested approachIn footballing terms, ‘tried and tested’ usually applies to a manager who picks the same old players time and again regardless of their form out of blind loyalty for what they’ve done for him previously. See Vicent Del Bosque selecting Iker Casillas for Spain at the 2014 World Cup, for instance. In this case, though, that doesn’t quite apply. If Southgate elects to stick with the 4-3-3 system he used during the autumn internationals against Spain and Croatia, it will likely result in a front three of Harry Kane through the middle and Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford in close support. It seems ridiculous to count 25-year-old Kane and 24-year-old Sterling as England’s elder statesmen but given the youthfulness of Southgate’s squad, they genuinely are. Kane’s 20 international goals are just two more than the rest of the squad have managed combined, while Sterling’s 47 caps are only bettered by Jordan Henderson’s 48. Kane, Sterling and Rashford tore Spain apart back in October (Getty Images)Then there’s Rashford, who as recently as Euro 2016 was the undisputed baby of the group. At 21, he is older than four other players in the squad, including two of his direct competitors Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi (both 18). Given their respective ages, Kane, Sterling and Rashford should theoretically only get better in the coming years which is frightening considering their form this season. In what has been an injury-disrupted campaign, Kane has 17 Premier League goals, Sterling has 15 with another nine assists while Rashford has nine goals and six assists. For England, meanwhile, that trio tore Spain’s defence to shreds in October with Sterling scoring twice, Rashford netting one and Kane supplying two assists during England’s hugely impressive 3-2 win in Seville. Should Southgate stick with his World Cup attackers on Friday night, few would begrudge him doing so. Unleash the youthConsidering this is a competitive game and hopefully the first step towards Euro 2020 qualification, Southgate will likely play it safe and select his more experienced players to get the job done. Alternatively, he could just throw caution to the wind and unleash his latest batch of rising stars. While Sterling and Rashford have both been in scintillating form for the Manchester clubs over the past couple of months, there is a compelling argument that Jadon Sancho has done enough this season to warrant a starting place. Jadon Sancho has earned three senior international caps (Getty Images)Across Europe’s top five leagues there are two players topping the assists charts with 12 apiece: one is Lionel Messi, the other is Sancho. As well as his dozen assists, Sancho has also scored eight goals in the Bundesliga too, meaning he has been directly involved in 20 league goals during his first full season as a professional. Videos of him leaving Harry Maguire on the deck with some outrageous footwork and Panenka-ing Jack Butland from the penalty spot this week, have offered further evidence that Sancho belongs at this level. Depending on how confident Southgate is ahead of Friday’s game, he could conceivably pick all four of Kane, Sterling, Rashford and Sancho from the start. With three senior caps and a six-month age gap between himself and Hudson-Odoi, Sancho appears a seasoned veteran compared to the latest call-up to the squad. Hudson-Odoi was initially pencilled in to play for the U21s before being boosted up to the seniors following a couple of withdrawals. Hudson-Odoi, like Sancho an U17 World Cup winner, hasn’t been exposed to as much senior football as his compadre but he has delivered a series of sparkling cameo performances for Chelsea when given a chance to show what he can do, scoring four goals in his last nine appearances. The presence of both in the squad will lead to inevitable comparisons about their current situations at club level. While Sancho has established himself as a staple member of Dortmund’s starting XI, Hudson-Odoi has clocked up just 119 minutes of Premier League football this season. Southgate has both Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier available for the pivot spot in front of the back four, but neither has been as consistently impressive this season as the 20-year-old. Besides Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was curiously overlooked for the squad, Rice is the top-tackling Englishman in the Premier League this season with his 84 successful tackles the sixth-highest total in the division. Rice is the perfect example of a youngster who plays the game like a seasoned professional, always composed in possession, rarely taking the wrong option and delivering consistently good performances from one week to the next. There’s a reason England were so determined to acquire him. Southgate also has decisions to make at left-back between Danny Rose (28) and Ben Chilwell (22). Rose has been one of Spurs’ better performers during a difficult run of results while Chilwell has enjoyed an exceptional campaign after emerging as Leicester’s first-choice full-back. Chilwell’s assured displays for England during the Autumn including a mightily impressive display against Spain might just see him get the nod.
