dinner in america is such a “take what you want from it and leave the rest” movie for me because i do think it’s very cute and i can buy into some of the wish fulfillment nature of the story but admittedly there are some parts that really don’t work for me, there are some parts that fall a little flat either in terms of the characters or humor, and the pacing is a bit of a challenge tbh. but it’s unbelievable what the human brain can overcome by virtue of simply Just Liking That Guy

the other archangels watch on as his hands slip from aziraphale and he falls at his feet, ignoring their supreme archangel's horror and heartbreak, watching eagerly for him to deliver the killing blow. after everything, this is personal: heavens triumph over hell, ineffability beating free will.

but aziraphale can't, even as crowley looks up at him, eyes shining with acceptance and encouragement. even with his unwavering faith that aziraphale will do the right thing for humanity despite everything and everyone else.

in one last explosive show of strength, aziraphale transports them to heaven, scrambling for the book of life, pleading for crowley to tell him the name he was created with, his angelic name. he begs him to forgive him, love him, trust him when he says he can make it right, just to tell him his name, so he can find him.

crowley's dying, divine light invading his veins and it hurts. it hurts so much. the sword is gone, dropped somewhere probably, aziraphale doesn't know. he's pressing a hand over the wound like the problem is what's coming out of him, not what's already been injected in. too many human books.

for a moment, aziraphale thinks crowley would rather die than experience whatever aziraphale plans to do. but then his lips move around the shape of his angelic name, barely a sound escapes but the name is there. the star-maker, the lover and advocate for the universe when it was first blinking into existence and the lover and advocate for humanity when it was barely a concept.

aziraphale sobs with relief, forgetting for a moment how finite their time is. overwhelmed, he leads down to kiss the name off his lips, tasting love and forgiveness and possibly.

"angel," he is so quiet and strained but underneath it all, there is the touch of the smile he's too weak to give "please."

"right... right. of course," aziraphale stumbles out, daring not to take his hand from him as the other waves over the book.

nothing happens.

crowley uses the last of his strength. he raises his hand to the one aziraphale has against his chest, his fingers weaving with his. 'again,' it's not said but it's implicit in the weak press of his fingers.

this time aziraphale doesn't take his eyes off him. he squeezes all of his love back against crowley's hand, and waves over the book again.

Every once in a while I'll despair a little at finding so little Hina and/or Rui or Koorime content in general and then I'll recall how in a post asking "whatever character you're drawing their fate is yours now", a description of mine of Hina (I think I said "had illegal sex and will die in illegal childbirth (allegedly, in the manga, but yes does die) or by suicide after having said illegal childbirth (allegedly, in the anime)") picqued someone's interest and they wondered what that character was from. I told them and then they never asked me any further abt that (fair, it's a heavy description to hear on the Internet from a stranger and the yyh fandom is terrifying and Hina's presence in the story as "tragic female character willing to die in childbirth" and it being not left to much speculation Why She Was Willing To Do That aside from the expectant "well she's a female character and she was written by a man so it must've been the ye old ideal and self-sacrificing mother trope" are all fine reasons that come to mind) but I'm carrying that affirmation in my heart! I know that if a character's story is just told in an interesting way, they can in fact become interesting through that interpretation, even if at first they were expected to be boring.
