I know I always call myself a Dean Priest apologist as a joke, but I think one of the reasons why I find the groomer/creep label for him reductive is that it totally overlooks how L.M. Montgomery situates him in a Gothic tradition. We know LMM was hugely influenced by Jane Eyre and nowhere more clearly than in the Wyther Grange sequence, where Gothic tropes abound: an old ancestral house, night terrors, old gossip about love affairs, and the arrival of a cultured and sophisticated older man whose romantic interest in the heroine operates inherently repressively even while exerting fascination on her and the audience. Dean’s parallels to Rochester suffuse the text (the “am I handsome?” “No” exchange comes from Brontë nearly verbatim), yet so do his similarities to St. John Rivers, especially in how their societally sound offer of marriage would rob Emily/Jane of their trademark freedom. None of this necessarily exonerates Dean’s manipulative behavior, but it goes some lengths to justifying LMM’s neutral/occasionally favorable portrayal of him that could seem outrageous from 21st century standards.
