Prompt #8 Adroit

Charlette had not been down in the tunnels beneath the library in a long time. She had almost forgotten how cold the long, stone-tiled hallways of the Archives could be. Despite it being late into the summer season, she already felt the desire to pull her shawl tighter around her shoulders. It was strange to be down here and out of uniform, like she was sneaking into a place forbidden to her. But by now she knew these hallways almost as well as she did the roads and alleys of Willow’s Heart itself. Besides she had permission, how else was she going to deliver the reports Harriette had ordered her to cover? The stack of papers sat neatly in a leather folder held under one arm, the smooth surface feeling a little at odds with the rough-hewn walls and floors of stone that surrounded her. The thick heels of her sandals clacked against them with each step, announcing someone’s approach to anyone sitting yalms away, likely studying or researching the things they had found on their missions. Door after door passed her by, each one containing untold aetherical wonders. There is where the lines were drawn for her. She could enter Harriette, Emille and Aemerics offices when given an appointment, and nowhere else. It was a little ridiculous, since she had already been inside most of the rooms, hells she had helped fill some of them too. But, then again, she was supposed to be marked as ‘potentially untrustworthy’. So it stood to reason.

Harriette’s office stood at the furthest end of the first hallway you stepped into when entering the underground level. A large, dark oak door that had a bouquet of flowers carved into it, and the words ‘Head Librarian’ cut just above them. She always wondered if Harriette had that door designed herself, or if it was always like this. It was oddly fitting, considering how much she loved the Botanical aberrations they brought back or reported on. But that was a question for another sun, Charlette rapped her knuckles against the thick wood, and a muffled voice answered.

“Come in! It’s open! Ah, Charlette!” Harriette stood up from the piece of writing she had been scribbling through to walk around her wide, messy desk and right up to Charlette. Of the three current leaders of the Archive and its Order, Harriette was the one least concerned with decorum and proprietary as dictated by hierarchy. The portly woman placed her hands on Charlette’s upper arms, gave them a welcoming squeeze, then pulled her into a hug. “Ah! It’s so good to have you down here again! Goodness me, I could tell it was you minutes before you arrived. No one has quite such a wide gait that lands with such consistent volume. No thumps and thuds with you, just tips and taps. Come along, sit down, I’ve just made some lemon tea, help yourself to a biscuit if you like as well.” Harriette hurried Charlette over to a chair, all but pushing her down into it. A steaming cup of citrus-smelling tea was sat in front of her before she could refuse, and a tin of biscuits was opened and held out. Charlette was not going to say no to one of Mrs. Nilsen’s shortbread. “Thank you Head Librarian. It’s nice to be back, in a way. I quite enjoy the coolness of the Archives, compared to how sweltering it can be up there.” Harriette was already back behind her desk, only a short distance between the two of them. Whatever she had been working on was hastily stacked and set aside on a precarious looking pile of paperwork. But she paid Charlette full attention as she went, ever the multi-tasker despite how scattered she always looked. Red cheeked with salt-and-pepper flecked hair that was curled, big, and messy. The shock of green though in her eyes let anyone know the infinitely curious woman was focused on them. “I know! I feel like a burrowing badger sometimes, all I want to do is stay down here and remain cool and quiet within my den. But then I do miss the rain when it comes, and I love that smell.” Charlette nodded along, the two seeing eye-to-eye on a fair few things really. Though Charlette would never have been caught dead with an office as chaotic as Harriette’s. If she had ever had one herself. “But it can’t all be bad up there, hmm? You’ve been under Bobocufu’s care, you must be learning a wonderful amount of new and interesting things! And you get far more time inside her Greenhouse too. I wish I had more time for it, she’s planted such interesting and beautiful specimens there. I’ve had the blooming of the corpse flowers on my calendar for almost three twelvemoons now! Excited to find out if they really do smell like carrion? I’ve no reason to doubt Bobocufu, but smelling it yourself is the best and only way to confirm something so fantastically strange.” Harriette took a quick sip of her tea, fingers tip-tapping on her cup. “Yes, the corpse flowers are due to bloom this twelvemoon aren’t they? Should be just as summer is ending, so any sun now. Not sure if I’m excited for the stench, but I am curious to experience it. They are some of the largest blooms we have in the Greenhouse. But, if I’m honest, I think I prefer the saplings most. They feel like an investment, especially when we go out and plant those that are ready for the orchid.” Harriette was watching Charlette, like she was the student having a meeting with her inspiring teacher. The woman really did need to make more time for herself. “We’re going to do another planting next moon. You should come along, I think you would enjoy it.” A chubby hand pressed thick, short fingers against Harriette’s cheek. “Oh, you are sweet Charlette. Tell you what, I’ll mark it on the calendar and do my best. It sounds like a good way to spend a sun, and maybe we can name a few of them too? Perhaps a nice, straight, grumpy looking one we can call Emille the Second?” She tittered into her hand, pulled out a long quill made from a gauche, colourful feather, and scribbled down a note that she stuck to the calendar hanging on the wall behind her. “Something to look forward to! But, onto why you’re actually here. Can’t always just be tea and fun ideas, hmm? How did the reports go?” Charlette pulled the folder out from under her arm, opening it out on the table and spreading the separate papers she had completed for Harriette. Each section was stacked in neat piles, titles and stamps making it clear which was which. Pride welled in Charlette, how can anyone accuse her of something bad, when being a stickler for the rules created such perfect little pieces of parchment? Harriette pulled her glasses up by the string that hung them around her neck, sliding them down her small, pointed nose. It magnified her eyes by triple, her pupils going from black-beetles to button sized. “Mhm! I missed your sense of order and neatness Charlette dear. Not even Aemeric is this careful with his formats, and as you can see I’ve no time to care at all! Hah!” she waved a hand at her office, almost knocking over one of the stacks of papers. It made a little well of anxiety start to stir in Charlette’s belly. “Thank you. But there’s no need to feel bad about your office. I’ve heard it said chaos is sometimes the kiss of the adroit, wherever they decide to be intelligent.” Another titter, the sound of it reminded Charlette of gossiping girls, it made her feel like one for just a moment. “That’s very nice of you to say. But I don’t feel bad at all! Why should I? It’s my office, and I know what is where. I have a system, you see. It’s called ‘remembering where I last put it’.” That titter became a cackle! Charlette braved a smile of her own “Keep laughing like that, Head Librarian, and we might suspect we’ve a Shroud witch in our midst.” Harriette shook her head, and waved a hand with a limp wrist at Charlette. “Please, don’t let Emille hear you say that. He would never let me hear the end of it. ‘I told you! You’re creating a less than professional image for the blah, blah, blah.’ I would have to convince him the town was under attack to get him to focus on something else.” And with a shake of her head, she picked up the first of Charlette’s reports, gave it a flick so they stood straight in her grip, and started to read. Assignment #4762: The Retrieval Section 1: The Ul’dah Situation As Reported by Order Guardian(Currently Suspended) Charlette Bellamy This was going to be a long, long evening. So Charlette poured herself another cup, took another piece of shortbread, and settled in. She was ready to make her case as soon as Harriet spoke “So, tell me about this Q’talhdi woman.”

11.11

The late summer sky was still bright, but Friday could sense that the long afternoon had stretched on into the beginning of evening. She had found the path down to the courthouse pier easily, though once there, she didn’t find it very helpful. Like the pier beside the Bellamy mansion, the courthouse pier clearly wasn’t for public use. There was no one around to ask about what Val had sarcastically called “Everglades Madness.”

There was a boat, though. It was a rowboat a little smaller than Emile’s had been, and it floated low in the water - like maybe there was something wrong with it.

Friday sat on the pier next to the sad little boat and dangled her legs over the edge. The water level was much lower here than it had been at the pier where she’d met the old fisherman. There was even wet sand under the first seventy or so feet of this pier, making the beams holding it above the water look comically tall.

Around a curve in the shoreline, Friday could just barely see the Bellamy mansion perched high above the water. She squinted at the small black shape. Was that really the Bellamy mansion? She hadn’t remembered the rocky outcropping it sat upon being quite so cliff-like. She hadn’t really paid it much attention before.

There was a boat moving steadily across the water between Friday’s pier and the Bellamy mansion. Friday blinked, trying to get her eyes to focus on the little vessel. It was hard to tell which direction the occupant was rowing.

Friday glanced up at the back of the courthouse. She hadn’t been waiting for Val all that long - maybe an hour. He probably wouldn’t miss her if she went to investigate. The feeling that there might really be something to the old fisherman’s story about people just rowing away into the Glades made Friday’s fingers tingle. And even if the person in that boat was probably just a fisherman returning with the day’s catch, rowing out to meet them would give her something to do with herself.

A well rusted ladder let Friday down into the tiny rowboat. The boat sank a few inches into the water under her weight. Friday hadn’t thought the boat could rest much lower on the water before capsizing, but somehow, it managed. The water had a pink hue to it, reflecting the very beginning of dusk. Friday was about to reach for the oars when she realized the boat was still tethered to the pier. She would have to stand in the boat in order to untie the knot - she hadn’t thought of that.

Slowly, Friday got to her feet, the rowboat wobbling under her. She struggled with the unfamiliar knot, the wet rope reluctant to be parted from the post. The rowboat sloshed under her as her balance faltered, one side dipping below the water for just a moment, soaking her boots before she caught her balance again.

“This is ridiculous,” Friday muttered. She carefully lowered herself to a squat so she could pull her pocket knife out of her sock, then rose to her feet again - but not slowly enough. Another stream of water sloshed over her boots, and when she glanced down to see the damage, Friday thought she saw a shape move in the water under her.

Friday stared down into the water. The shape was gone, so far as she could tell. All she could see was the sunlight bouncing off the top of the water. It had probably been a fish - one of the big ones she had seen in the fisherman’s net. She looked up, bracing one arm against the post as she opened her pocket knife and began to saw through the rope.

It seemed to take forever before the rope finally gave under the knife. Friday wasn’t even sure the boat she had seen near the Bellamy mansion would still be there. She stood for a moment longer in the boat, trying not to let her ankles wobble as she herself wobbled over whether she should climb back up onto the pier and wait for Val, when she heard a single shout, then nothing. Friday strained to hear as she carefully sat back down in the rowboat. The water was so loud, sloshing up almost over the sides as the boat settled.

No other sound followed the scream. Friday craned her neck to see if she could catch a glimpse of the other boat she had seen before. It was out of sight. She put her oars in the water, unsure of her grip. Her first experimental row bonked her into the pier. Friday tried again, surprised by just how much effort it took to pull the boat forward on the water.

The athlete in her took to the task, her breath soon coming in a rhythm with the strain of her arms against the oars. It felt good to move like this - better than sitting on the pier trying not to think about her place in the circus, now that had been annexed into something bigger than just her and Val. She should have felt at home - after all, these people were in show business, too. But back at the Ace, Friday had been at the top - not in terms of popularity with the bar patrons, maybe, who preferred the girls who were young enough to do the hardest routines, but with her peers. That camaraderie had taken years to build. There was a reason Friday had been sitting alone this afternoon while everyone else slotted themselves into the familiar motions of setting up for a show. Friday’s oars cut the water.

The light was dim enough that it was getting hard to see very far across the water. It didn’t help that a mist was rising up around the Bellamy mansion. Friday squinted. The mist didn’t extend to anywhere else. It started and ended where the cliff met the water.

Friday rowed harder, her heart pounding. She still hadn’t heard a peep since that one scream. As she got closer, she saw the boat she had seen before. It sat just outside the reach of the mist, a twisted, inhuman shape standing perfectly still in the middle. Friday tried to be silent as her oars passed through the water. A light flashed on the shore in a blinking pattern. The shape in the boat moved, and Friday realized it was not one shape, but two: a camera and an operator.

Now another boat passed through the mist, rounding the corner of the cliff under the Bellamy mansion. Friday couldn’t hear the scene - perhaps there were no lines - but she relaxed as soon as she put two and two together. The scream must have been part of the moving picture. Her hands went for the oars. She needed to start back for the courthouse pier before it got too dark to see.

The mist cleared almost as quickly as it had descended upon the top of the water. The sweat dripping down Friday’s back turned cold, and she shivered. She wanted to turn away, and at the same time, she didn’t. The boat with the camera operator bobbed just slightly on still waters. The boat with the actors - there were two of them - approached the cliff.

With the mist cleared, Friday felt faint. The outcropping of rock had gotten taller. She would have noticed the cave entrance if it had been there before. Her thoughts caught up with her panic. It wasn’t that the rock had grown. That was impossible. The cave had always been there, Friday just hadn’t been able to see it. The water level had been higher earlier today, that was the only explanation.

One of the actors was thrashing in the boat as the other rowed steadily for the cave mouth. He threatened to tip the boat over, moaning against the gag in his mouth. Friday wouldn’t have heard it, but the miserable sound bounced off the cave, sounding hollow and inhuman by the time it reached Friday.

Lights appeared on the water as the sun dipped further west. The lights floated perfectly still on the water, tiny, but there were so many that Friday lost count. They blinked in and out depending on whether a ray of sun happened to land on them. Friday was reminded of something she couldn’t quite place. Most of the lights were concentrated around the actors’ boat, and Friday squinted as the water around the boat moved with a tide all its own.

A pair of lights caught the corner of Friday’s eye, and she turned to get a better look. Even with the lights just five feet from her own boat, Friday couldn’t see what they were. She didn’t need to, she realized. She stared into the pair of lights sitting perfectly still in the water, watching her, and thought of Ari back in Oklahoma City. His mutant eyes did just the same thing.

There were muties in the water, hundreds of them by the judge of how many pairs of eyes she had seen. Her hands rested numbly on the oars. Friday was undecided whether to row back to the pier or shout a warning to the actors who seemed clueless as to the danger they were in. Either option would draw attention to herself. She didn’t want a hundred muties descending on her. She could row all she liked; they would tear her apart.

Her attention jerked back to the actors as she watched one of them heave his kicking, moaning partner over the lip of the boat and into the water.

Friday’s mouth was suddenly dry, the rest of her clammy with shock. The water at the cave mouth seemed to come to a boil. Something that was not a mutie - something so big it couldn’t have been - flipped out of the water in a wriggling frenzy before disappearing below the surface in a thunderous splash that nearly capsized the boat that held the remaining actor. The boat careened toward the camera on choppy waters.

Friday’s arms felt like lead as she tried to lift the oars. She had seen that man tied up in the car earlier today. He’d needed help. All those people had known he’d needed help - from the extras in the plaza to the linen-suited Bellamy men behind the cameras.

Friday threw up in her rowboat, not daring to lean over the edge. Tears streamed from her eyes as she retched. She had thought Macomber’s gang was the worst thing to ever happen to her. She still dreamed about throwing mutant bodies into that truck. This was worse. At least Val didn’t have to share this with her - that was something. She wiped her mouth and eyes. It would have killed him, to know he could have saved that man. Friday could bear it - she would have to.

Friday’s boat ran aground on the sand under the courthouse pier. The crunching sound woke her up from wherever she had been. Her arms throbbed from rowing. Numbly, Friday climbed out, submerging her boots in two feet of water, and hauled the boat up the beach as far as she could make herself go.

Val still wasn’t back. She sat down hard on the sand, and stared out onto the water. She couldn’t feel the slight stickiness of ice cream on her fingers anymore. The sun had all but disappeared, and with it, any chance she had of catching its reflection in the eyes of one of those things. But she thought she saw a ripple move in the water under the pier.

the task at hand should be simple. focus. focus the emotions, the thoughts that race through her about her big brother. focus them. focus on him. perhaps then she could master this stupid location magic. so far, it’s not proving to be as easy as she’d like. nothing about her magic is. each time, it drains every inch of energy she has until she physically can’t continue. can’t finish to see her brother and his surroundings clearly.

but she’s trying.

emil, while still very much a mystery to the woman, at the very least tried to help her. though, still, octavia can’t understand why. can’t comprehend that a stranger sees the magic that comes from her fingers tips glowing almost like electricity and doesn’t immediately recoil. doesn’t look at her as if she’s a monster. ever since the first day she displayed her abilities, that’s all her mother saw.

after a slow breath out, octavia began her focus again. she imagined bellamy’s face in her mind. his brunette curls. the freckles on his face that came forth even more in the summertime sun. his scar above his eyebrow caused by a game the two played together. as her focus grew on bellamy, the magic glow in her hands intensified, a real image of her brother appearing before the two. it was hazy, distorted as if she was looking at him from under water. focus. focus. focus.

but then the ringing in her ears begins. arms become heavy, like someone threw a weighted blanket on top of her. her whole body begins to violently shake and just as the image of bellamy begins to come clear, it vanishes just as fast, octavia near collapsing as emil came beside her to support her standing. her knees buckle beneath her and for a moment as the magic disappears, he has to support the majority of her weight.

ragged breaths come forth just as much as her frustration bubbles forward. why can’t she do this?? in her anger she can make a room explode but she can’t managed to track down the most important person to her? it takes a few moments of simply breathing before, “ thanks, ” as octavia moves away from his touch and comes to sit on the ground with a grumble, “ every damn time. ”

back is press against the wall & a firm palm touches his chest, as if to ensure he stays put. he isn’t exactly about to protest. not when the other man’s lips begin to make a descent. emil sucks in a sharp breath at the sensation of his mouth against his hips & then it is like he can hardly breathe when fingers slip into the waste band of his pants to pull them away. hazel hues shift down to look at bellamy & the rather wicked look in the man’s eyes when they flicker back up at him only makes the tension in his muscles increase.

hand falls to bellamy’s hair, fingers curling into dark locks. his grip only tightens when the skaigona takes him into his mouth. “ jok— ” emil’s head tilts back against the wall & it’s all he can do to just focus on breathing. tongue swirls against his length, flicking over his tip— the damned man is toying with him. a groan sounds from his throat & if weren’t for the commanding hold bellamy has on his hips and thighs he would try to thrust deeper.

the man pulls away a moment, enough to cause emil to glance back once more. there is nothing but need & desire in his eyes. and when he looks into bellamy’s he sees hunger. a craving he wants so desperately to satsify. bellamy’s hands curl around his member as a ragged breath escapes emil. he wants nothing more in this moment than to please this man & it makes his words come out in a submissive whisper “ please. ”
