#elena of avalor podcast

Text
This week, with a great deal of help from Ilana's expertise, we essentially do the adult version of the classic "let's learn about Hanukkah" formula that just so happens to be present in the two specials we cover, from the classic Rugrats episode "Chanukah", to the more recent Elena of Avalor's "Festival of Lights".  Here we discuss the two very different approaches to the tale of the first Hanukkah the episodes take, the various ways this made our two Jewish guests feel seen, the rest of us learn stuff, or sometimes even vice versa! Have a very happy and safe Hanukkah from the gang at In Each Retelling.

Note
does the jewish fairytale the pirate princess exist in the disneyverse?
For sure! Its a really fun story and I'd love to include it! Actually, the Everrealm has a Jewish princess called Princess Rebecca, who appears in Elena of Avalor. It would be fun to imagine this as her story
Tumblr media
I'll include a link to the podcast where I first heard the story so others can enjoy it as I'm a bit backed up art wise atm. But thanks for reminding of this awesome tale!

While Dian Morey, local (former?) doctor and known name around town, has returned to Swynlake, almost a year has passed since his disappearance and the question still remains: Where was he?
The doctor was originally thought to be long gone after the horrible night of the Blackwell Gala. Lives were lost that night and many others injured due, but all were accounted for. Except for one. The Morey family were very vocal about wanting to find the eldest son of the family. They posted on social media and hung up missing persons flyers around town. Supposedly he was still missing for weeks, which then turned into months. There was speculation of what could have happened to him, most fearing the worst as the known doctor was not characterized as someone to pick up and leave without a word to not only his place of work but to his family, which is allegedly very close to one another.
That family being made up of Padme and Rohan Morey, the parents of 7 children:
The eldest, Dian Morey, the subject in question.
Mahzar Morey, a PhD student at Pride University who also teaches Middle Eastern studies. He also has a podcast, Let’s Talk About…
Isaac Morey, a teacher at Swynlake Primary in the nursery.
Elliot Morey, a firefighter for the Swynlake Firebrigade.
Sebastian Morey, who works for the family construction company as an accountant.
Gem Morey also works for the family company as a contractor. He was also in jail previous to his return to Swynlake in August of 2021 after having burned down a section of Swynlake Secondary.
Devyn Morey, an art student at Pride University.
All except Dian were adopted.
After 6 months of Dian Morey being missing he reappeared. On March 27th, 2022 at the opening day of Swynlake’s annual Farmer’s Market the man was spotted approaching his family’s booth. One would suspect that it would have been a joyous occasion to have the long lost brother to have finally returned home. Instead he was greeted with violence. Allegedly Sebastian Morey threw a punch and started a spark. Literally. The pyrokinetic of the family, Gem Morey, then set fire to the family booth. The fire department was quick to put him out and most of the Morey siblings dispersed from the scene.
From this chaotic reintroduction to Swynlake, many would assume that Dian has some sort of feud brewing between himself and the rest of his family. However, recent shocking evidence has come to light pointing not to hatred, but romance at the heart of the mystery of Dr. Morey’s disappearance.
CCTV footage secured from Castle Suites security shows Dian Morey entering and exiting the home of none other than deposed Crown Princess of Avalor, Her Royal Highness Elena Flores. These visits occurred late at night and in the early hours of the morning, and body language analysis has proven the veracity and intensity of this affair. Given the tumultuous nature of the political situation in Avalor, it is unsurprising that Princess Elena and the doctor chose to keep this scandalous affair under wraps, and that Dian Morey chose to disappear altogether.
One may imagine a secluded life for Dian between the months of September 2021 and March 2022, dedicating his life only to his beloved princess. This risky move shows the depths of Dian’s devotion, giving up everything to pursue a woman who stands at the center of war, controversy, and so much personal heartbreak.
As for the future of Dilena, that remains to be seen. Dian’s reemergence into the public eye could indicate a heart-wrenching breakup no doubt fueled by the pressures of Princess Elena’s responsibilities as deposed princess and Dian’s withdrawal from his family and career. Alternately, the couple may have only grown in their devotion to one another, finding even more secret ways to continue their relationship while going about their regular lives. Dian Morey has, after all, remained on sabbatical from his work at Swynlake General Hospital.
Dian Morey did not provide a comment after multiple requests.

Character Colour Palette: Carla Delgado
Note: This was sparked by the discussion of character designs and colour meanings on Episode Four of The Magic Within Podcast. Their discussion got me thinking, obviously, about my girl and what her colour palette might mean. So,I’d like to say Thank You to the Podcast Princesses for their cool segment!
 First Outfit
Tumblr media
Carla’s first outfit is a mix of different colours, with the main colour being yellow. The colour Yellow is said to have conflicting associations. While it generally represents sunshine, hope and happiness…none of which really apply to Carla at this particular point in her story, it can also represent energy, which she certainly has a lot of. Carla is fierce, feisty and is the only one on Team Shuriki who’s having none of Shuriki’s crap. She grows increasingly annoyed with her father’s loyalty to the sorceress, openly talks back to her and is just an overall pain in the ass. (And I love it!) She’s young and passionate and just has a lot of energy that would be a great asset if channeled properly. But, I digress. The colour can also represent honour and loyalty, which seem like strange traits to describe Carla, but hear me out. Carla is fiercely loyal to her father. Or, rather, they’re loyal to each other. Despite all her doubts, she goes along with his plans and they never leave the other behind. On the other hand, yellow can also represent cowardice and deceit, which needs little explanation. Carla was raised as a thief. She was born into a life of criminality and always on the run. She’s a master manipulator and a flirt who knows how to get what she wants through deceitful means. The whole Spy in the Palace trilogy shows this well.
Additionally, a dull yellow, like what Carla wears can also represent caution and jealousy. Jealousy in particular is something she’s shown to be privy to. Once the dynamic shifts and it’s no longer just her and her father, she gets aggravated. For as long as she can remember, it’s always been two, her and Victor, and then Shuriki and Fiero join the fray and she’s shoved aside. Yeah, that doesn’t work for Carla. She doesn’t like being shoved off and certainly doesn’t like being number two to Fiero’s number one.
Carla’s second major colour is black. Black is associated with fear, mystery, strength, authority, evil, aggression, and rebellion. Now that’s a lot to break down. But, some of the traits go hand in hand. Obviously, Carla’s (current) alignment is evil, and with it she wants to strike fear into others, gain respect and hold authority and power. At least, that appears to be the path they are going down. She’s always been told that ambition and power will get her what she wants, so she strives for these things, which leads us to rebellion. Her alignment in itself is a rebellion, along with the way she was raised. She’s going against the rules and norms of society, making her way by thieving, scheming and conning alongside her father. Additionally, Black often represents the emotions and actions of rebellion in teenagers, which Carla is. As previously stated, she openly rebels against Shuriki and has no problems talking back. Carla is very strong and opinionated and hates being shoved around.
Black is a mysterious colour, typically associated with the unknown and negative. Now, this is interesting to me, because, beyond the obvious negativity and aggression, I believe there is some mystery to be talked about. This may be my bias talking, but Carla is one of those characters that I believe has more to say what’s on the surface. We don’t know a whole lot about her, her life experience and more importantly, her mother, which I believe is a big part of the puzzle that is Carla Delgado. There’s this whole cloud of mystery surrounding her that we have yet to unravel.
To finish it off, we have small splashes of orange, red and green. One meaning for Orange is creativity. As shown in A Spy in the Palace trilogy, Carla is actually very creative. Not only in her scheming, but also when it comes to projects and crafts, though she seems to dislike the latter. She designed a whole new banner for the Jaquin festival and was said to be helping with decorations for other events throughout her time in the palace. It is also said to be vibrant and flamboyant, which fits in the sense that Carla can be a bit…extra. She definitely has a touch of drama queen in her.
The subtle hints of Red are representative of several things. On the positive end, we have Carla’s leadership, determination, willpower, and confidence. Carla harbours traits that I believe, if channeled correctly, would make her a great leader. When she knows what she wants, she’s determined and hardworking and will do whatever she can to get it, such as in The Jewel of Maru, when she refused to give in until she got the jewel that she was told would get her power. She kept going even when her father wanted to just give up.
On the negative end, we have rage, malice and wrath. Carla has one heck of a temper and is likely the type of person to hold grudges. The way she glares at Shuriki is enough to tell you this. Being a villain, malice and wrath are part of the deal. Her actions against Naomi during the preparations for the Jaquin festival show this well as she purposely and maliciously breaks everything apart simply to make Naomi look bad and ultimately get what she wants with no regard for anyone’s feelings.
Lastly is Green. Green is said to represent a lack of experience and need growth, which seems like a weird thing to point out, but, being young, I believe Carla has a lot of room for growth. We see this in Realm of the Jaquins where, not knowing anything of her father’s plans, Carla spends time berating him with questions, not being able to see how each piece of the plan is meant to connect to the others. Even asking if it was wise for them to return to Avalor after what happened last time. Her inexperience is shown in the way she sometimes jumps into things without thinking. But, green can also be associated with greed and jealousy, two of Carla’s prominent negative traits.
 Second (Malvago) Outfit
Tumblr media
Carla’s Malvago robe is different shades of purple. The color purple is often associated with nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, dignity, devotion, pride, mystery, independence, and magic. Some of which, namely mystery and creativity, I have already covered.
The two that stick out the most here are magic and power. Carla started wearing this colour after she was granted dark magic by Fiero, which she is shown to be quiet adept at after a few early mistakes. These powers seem to give her a boost of confidence and only fuel her ambitions. Magic gives her a new skill set to use in her and Victor’s climb to power. Speaking of her father, as mentioned previously, she’s loyal to him. It’s subtle, but they do honestly love and care for one another. And she’s devoted not only to him, but their overall goal, doing whatever she can to be included in the overall plan, even outright telling Shuriki that she has a “clear shot” to bring down Elena in Song of the Sirenas.
As far as nobility and luxury are concerned, that’s less what she is, and more what she’s striving towards. She wants to truly be someone, and not just someone, but royalty. After all, in Don’t Look Now, she says she’s “coming for the throne.”
Dignity and pride go hand in hand for Carla. She’s a very prideful person, and doesn’t appear to fluster easily. In fact, she tends to get defensive rather than deal with embarrassment. Even when in the wrong, she holds onto her pride. In Race for the Realm when Victor brushes her off, says to “leave the spell casting” to him, she doesn’t listen, instead casts the spell in part to spite him and prove she can do it and make up for her first failure.
Different shades are also said to hold different meanings. Light purple hues represent feminine energy and delicacy. Dark purple hues evoke feelings of gloom, sadness, and frustration. Bright purple suggest riches and royalty. All things we’ve seen in Carla at one point or another. She’s a flirt who can use her feminine charms to her advantage. The endless failed schemes on the rise to power frustrate her. In fact, she frustrates easily in part because of her impatience. And, as stated, riches and royalty is what she’s striving for. The dream that she’s always been told she wanted and is eagerly chasing.
Lastly, there’s hints of white on the outfit as well. Now this one was a little more difficult to figure out, but, ultimately, I think it may be used as a hint of things to come. White is typically used to represent humility and purity, but can also represent new beginnings, brilliance and understanding. I’m just going to leave it at that. We all know I have a lot of feelings about Carla, but since we’re talking about canon designs and details, I’m going to leave speculation out of it.

Exandria Unlimited: A Critical Role Mini-Campaign!
Always wanted to watch Critical Role but didn’t have six billion hours to dedicate to keeping up with it? Looking for a self-contained, manageable show to try out? Now’s your chance! In the hiatus between campaigns, CR is releasing a new eight-episode mini-series set in the canon of the main campaigns. In brief, it takes place in a city called Emon 30 years after a devastating attack during the events of Campaign 1. If it’s anything like previous new campaigns/one-shots, it will be made as a jumping-on point for new viewers and won’t assume any familiarity with the rest of the series.
Tumblr media
Who’s running the game?
For the first time in a canon game, a new Game Master will be running the show! Aabria Iyengar (top left) is an extremely experienced D&D player who’s starred in a bunch of the big actual-play shows out there (there’s a list here!), and is a GM for Saving Throw. If you’d like to see her in action with the main cast, she was on a couple episodes of Narrative Telephone and her contribution to the story was fantastic.
Who are the new cast members?
New to the cast (and in Aimee’s case, also new to D&D!) are Aimee Carrero (top center) and Robbie Daymond (bottom right). You probably know Aimee from her roles as She-Ra or as Elena of Avalor in the eponymous shows. Robbie also has no shortage of big credits, including Spider-Man in the Disney XD series and Tuxedo Mask in the Sailor Moon re-dub.
Who are the regular cast members?
Living the dream of forever-DMs everywhere by playing in his own game for once is Matt Mercer (bottom left), who you may know as McCree in Overwatch or Levi in Attack on Titan. Jumping in from the main campaigns are Ashley Johnson (top right), whose credits include Ellie from Last of Us and Patterson from Blindspot, and Liam O’Brien (bottom center), who played Illidan in WoW and Gaara in Naruto.
I would like to see a trailer.
Then you’re in luck: there’s a super-lovely announcement video that introduces all the players!
I know nothing about D&D and at this point I’m too scared to ask.
Not a problem! The important thing is the story being told, and a lot of the game can be picked up as you go. Basically: GM explains scene, players decide what to do, if it’s not a trivial action the GM has them roll a 20-sided die to see if it’s successful or not (20 is good, 1 is not). Player characters have different abilities that make some types of checks more likely to succeed than others. In combat, things would get too hectic just playing out a scene, so the game becomes turn-based with the initiative roll at the start deciding who gets to go first. If a player’s character drops to 0 HP, they’re unconscious and may die permanently if they don’t get help quickly. The game varies wildly from combat slug-fests to dice-free improvised drama/comedy. It’s a good time.
Okay, so how do I watch?
The very good news: the show is completely free to watch. You can see it air live on Thursdays at 7 PM Pacific Time (here’s a useful countdown clock for different timezones - at the time of this post it’s showing a countdown for a one-shot airing tonight) on Twitch or YouTube. After it airs, you can watch the VOD if you have a Twitch subscription (in case you’re not a big Twitch person, you get a free subscription via Amazon Prime), but it will be posted in its entirety to their YouTube channel, generally the following Monday. They also usually post an audio-only podcast version the following Thursday. The first episode airs this Thursday, June 24, at 7 PM Pacific, and episodes will air weekly from then on.

Episode 2 is live now!
Welcome to Re-Imagining the Magic podcast episode 2, where we take Disney concepts to other levels! In this episode, we talk the Disney Princess lineup and how they've been featured in the Disney theme parks. Particularly focusing on the non-white Disney Princesses such as Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Moana, and Elena. What attractions do they feature? What attractions get made to fit the Disney Princess lineup? What are the possibilities to incorporate these characters into the parks if they're not being represented enough? Are we doomed to have everything be overshadowed by Frozen?

Anniversary
Happy Birthday @pizza-n-sunshine! Its a day early here but over there, it’s your birthday! I hope you have a wonderful time with your family and friends and perhaps some Pan dulce while you’re at it. You’ve been such a wonderful friend, a leader almost as you created such beautiful fanfics that undoubtedly brought a smile to my face or occasionally pulled at my heart. You’ve helped host and edit one of the most rocking podcasts, and what’s more. You’ve been unfailingly kind, open hearted and sweet to everyone looking to squeal their hearts out over this wonderful show. An era may be over, but your magic within and your light will always shine so bright. Enjoy!  Elena took a deep breath and peeked from the corner of her eye. Mateo was sitting silently, crossed legged and breathing deeply to the sounds of Flo singing around the courtyard, sniffing the flowers and generally dancing with delight over the bright sunny day.
Or more likely Mateo was meditating in spite of Flo's cheerful singing.
The fluffy alpacamundi was truly adorable and sweet, she had been a manifestation of all of Elena's happiness after all, but meditative and staying quiet were never one of her key traits.
Speaking of manifesting Elena's happiness.
She peeked out of the corner of her eye at Mateo's blissful face. It seemed he reached his peace. Elena felt the familiar flutter in her stomach even though she had been lucky enough to see his face every day for the past six years now. But she could never get enough of it.
The crookedness of his lips when he felt a bit uncomfortable that made her heart go out to him, but as adorkably endearing. The soft brown curls that Elena loved running her fingers through, mussing it a bit, making him look untamed. Which reminded her of his eyes.
His beautiful expressive hazel eyes and how his feelings shone out of them clear as the sun. The mischievous twinkle, the wicked glint at night, the tenderness....Ah the tenderness she loved. For even though she was a strong queen, she prided herself on the fact, she was able to let go around him, and for that she was grateful.
He would never see it as a weakness or see her as less weak. He just held her, and she reveled in that affection. Yes, he was also a manifestation of happiness.
Not that she created him. But he brought her happiness all the same.
Which is why on this bright spring day, she was enjoying this morning by having a day off and meditating with him. Well that and one other reason. It happened to be their one year anniversary.
She hadn't been expecting a parade or a bouquet of flowers, she wasn't so high-maintenance, but a little something.
She would have preferred a day with no work, no other people. Just her and Mateo curled up in some little concealed part of the garden, enjoying each other's company. And perhaps more.
In fact, that had been what she expected when Mateo arrived at her door, asking her if she wanted to go out to the garden.
When they got to the far corner of the garden with its apricot mallow flowers. It was a secluded spot, mainly because it seemed that there was not much to look at but the sparse hills. Which was true during the daytime, but at night, with its simple view, it made the sunset all the more stunning and vivid. In fact it reminded her a bit of Mateo.
How people saw him as a somewhat shy and dorky wizard, even he saw himself as that, doubting his skills and abilities. But Elena just knew ever since he helped free her from her amulet that there was a spark, a royal master wizard in him that just needed to believe in himself. Seemingly plain at first glance, but at the right moment, he could take your breath away.
So with all these clues, she waited for him to magic up a blanket, perhaps a picnic of her favorite pan dulce treats and enjoy their alone time.
Instead Mateo said that he had wanted to do some meditation outside since it was so nice out. He sat down, patted the spot next to her and closed her eyes. So she played along even attempting to do a downward dog while he was in a perfectly content butterfly pose. And it had been like this for the past 10 minutes. Either he was really good at holding out the surprise or he really didn't know what it was.
Nothing new going on here, no smile or Happy anniversary.
Elena shook her head. What was wrong with her? This is what she wanted after all. Alone time with Mateo. Which was even more solitary now that Flo was gone, bored by their inaction.
But still...a little acknowledgement would have been nice. After all, for her the moment they gave into their feelings had been like an unexpected bolt of lightning, a feeling of shock after the Coronation ceremony.
She had thought finally being crowned queen, surrounded by her family and friends, had been cathartic enough. But when she found the words to tell Mateo her intense feelings and Mateo return them in turn, a new catharsis came.   Everything fitting into place. A moment of completeness.
She had somewhat realized her feelings months before. It had been during the first few days after Naomi's departure. She had felt lost without her best friend.
She always treasured the blonde's company, and she hadn't wanted to stand in the way of her dreams, but she hadn't been expecting such feelings of abandonment and loneliness.
Mateo had seen her wandering the hallways, nostalgically looking at their picture together and did what he did best. He listened, he sympathesized, he gave her comfort like no one else could. There was something about that understanding look, the soft feel of his wool rub that made her feel safe, like everything would be okay in the end. There was no judgement, just love. Maybe that had been running undercurrent in her mind.
For when Mateo reminded her that between the three of them, and Isabel's inventions, Avalor would be well-protected and he and Gabe might not be able to do girl-talk. they would take over the other best friend activities, something rang false.
When he assured her that Naomi would come back to her true home after she sailed the seven seas, that this was no different than if it had been Gabe leaving on a guard search or Mateo travelling to find some new spells.
She didn't know what it was but the idea of Mateo leaving struck more deep than the sadness she felt at Naomi's departure. The thought of Mateo leaving for an indefinite amount of time, no idea when or if he would come back was like the ground opening up under her. Being stuck back in the amulet. Without Mateo by her side, she would lose her biggest source of comfort. Her biggest sharer of puns. He helped calm her, reminding her of her mother's song. Being with Mateo was like being with someone who was perfectly attuned with her feelings. They could share a look and know exactly what the other was thinking. He was more than a friend. He was...
That's when it hit her.
But she just smiled at Mateo and nodded, leaning into the crook of his neck, all the while trying to calm her fluttering heart and focus on jaquins and pan dulce in hopes of keeping the thoughts at bay.
She had done a good job of it. Mateo had been so surprised when she admitted her feelings for him. But then after Naomi had left there had been many things to distract her. The coming darkness, her lying cousin, malvagos, planning Chloe's party, her own coronation coming up.
She got swept up in the bustle of life and tried her best to ignore the feelings of warmth and happiness that Mateo's smile gave her. She had to wait. She had to wait till she was ready.
That came after the day after Coronation.
She had been more than ready to start the day. Even though it wasn't royal queen behavior, she had run down the hall, as eager as she had at 16. And she ran right into Mateo.
He had smiled and teased her, "Someone's excited to do paperwork." They had held each other's arms a bit too long. They laughed and had looked longer into each other's eyes than a best friend should.
And she plunged, "Mateo, how are... I mean.. I'm gad we danced. But I had really wanted to have that first dance with you." He blushed and sheepishly rubbed his neck, "It;s fine. Francisco has been there for you for so long.."
“Yes, but you have been with me too." Elena interrupted, feeling that she had to blurt everything now even if her tongue was slower than the words speeding in her head, "No matter what. And.. I will be there for you no matter what too." "Of course, Elena, I never doubted that."
“And I love you. I think I really love you."
The emotions across Mateo's face were brief yet distinct. Confusion, disbelief, shock, happiness. His voice wavered because despite his gleeful face, he still couldn't believe his ears, "You do?"
“Yes." Elena inhaled, feeling the weight, the nervous flutter dissipated even if he might reject her.
Though she doubted it from his glowing features.  "I-I do too." Mateo whispered, still unsure so much like the young wizard she had encouraged to find the magic within than the confident man he was now.
They smiled, Elena felt like her face would split wide open. Mateo smiled at her and it made her smile more which made him smile that sweet crooked smile.
They kissed, starting a bit hesitant, a bit awkward, but then their lips touched and once more completeness enveloped her. That and warmth and fireworks. It was a world unto her own and she was floating in his arms.
Her mind was at once blank, only feeling Mateo's touch and spinning with questions in a freefall. She also felt a sense of imbalance at Mateo's admittance. When she realized her feelings she hadn't been sure that Mateo liked her in that way.
He had said they were friends, kept assuring he would always be there for her, that's what friends did. But to realize that Mateo had been hiding feelings too.
She wondered when it started. She had her answers soon enough after they stopped kissing. Embarrassingly caught by Senora Torrez and Flo's knowing smiles.
They talked long into the night after a busy day of work that she hadn't been able to concentrate as she should have. She had been embarrassed to find out that Mateo realized his feelings long before her and that she had remained perfectly oblivious. Mateo told her that it was fine, she had more important things going on then and he had thought she wouldn't feel the same way for a simple wizard like him.
She reminded him that he was not a simple wizard, he was so much more than that and she believed he was capable of great things. They talked about the depths of their feelings, how they had always felt a connection. Elena even mentioned how it transcended dreams like her nightmare universe where Esteban reigned.
No matter what was more than a saying between then. It was an oath, a promise they'd never break. They'd always be there for each other.
The slight annoyance that Mateo was not remembering what day it was faded away at the thought of their saying.
“Stop it, Elena" she scolded herself, "He has a lot of other things on his mind.” With teaching Olivia and his other apprentices, and advising Gabe's magic squadron, and helping rebuild alliances and dealing with complaints. He must need this meditation time in order to relax.
She certainly knew he needed sleep from staying up all night perfecting spells and preparing potions, his mind constantly racing to find more knowledge. Though she must admit she found the result of his lack of sleep- his spontaneous cat naps around the palace- adorable.
Not everything is going to be focused on their relationship. He was going to get distracted and forget once and a while. That didn't matter. She knew he loves her. She glanced at Mateo again, he looked so peaceful. A small smile on his lips, his head bowed in concentration.
How times have changed.
She never thought once she became queen that everything would be fine. There were still minor attacks from villagers awakening a sleeping magical creature mixed with the more mundane, and politically-tricky kingdom negotiations.
But it was nowhere near the life or death battles against shades and malvagos, and battling her own intense emotions reflected through her magic powers. She was confident now, she knew how to rule and balance her own feelings with the greater picture for the good of the kingdom.
It was certainly a different time from when she was first released from her amulet. She chuckled at how impatient and overconfident she had been, with no clue of how much she was about to learn and experience.
Oh and now she, the Queen of Avalor, was the girlfriend of the Master Royal wizard.
Mateo was her soul mate. A boy with many talents, but the biggest one was his heart and bravery despite all that he had been through.
He had grown the most over the years they've together from studying in the darkness of the basement, hiding his chispa from Shuriki's forces to facing his own insecurities to staring down the most dangerous malvagos the Everrealm had known.
Elena shook her head. She was going to forget all that special anniversary nonsense. She was happy enough being with him, and seeing him happy.
She got up, and kissed the top of his head, 'I'm going to go tell Armando to bring some pan dulce for us. Yoga works up an appetite.
“Especially if it's Ixlan's extreme yoga." Mateo smiled.
Elena laughed and stopped by the fountain seeing Flo splashing around with the birds. "Flo can you tell Armando to bring some pan dulces to the far end of the garden."
"Oo pan dulce! Can I eat some!? Can I eat some?!" Flo pleaded.
"Of course you can." Elena promised. "Yipee!" Flo called, racing off to find Armando.
Elena walked back and saw Mateo frantically setting up a blanket as flower bouquets and garlands levitating in the air.
“You remembered?" Elena gasped, running to hug Mateo from behind, causing the petals to fall down, petals spinning around them as they crashed.
"Heh, I was hoping to surprise you, but you wouldn't close your eyes for meditation." Mateo said, his crooked smile bringing out his laugh lines, "I know you wanted to spend the day together but I thought I'd make it a little bit magical." He motioned to the formerly levitating objects and she giggled at his pun.
“I love it!" Elena beamed, and kissed him, savoring the the taste of his lips, how he was almost hesitant at first, probably from surprise, but then it deepened, filled with longing as all her senses went on overdrive, intoxicated by the touch of Mateo, his taste, his warmth. Everything, it left her breathless. But she had one present to give him first before she forgot...
"I got you something too," she frantically reached into her belt where she had clumsily tied her present next to her scepter but had hoped that he wouldn't have noticed.
They had said they wouldn't get gifts but she had broken the promise anyway. Her gift was an old spellbook she had found in her father's office, now hers. King Raul had been close with Alacazar, very interested in magic works as much as science. The spellbook was Alacazar's when he had first been named royal wizard, scrawled with Alacazar's and Raul's personal notes, and she thought it would be fitting that Mateo should have it as the Master Royal Wizard.
She added her own touch of putting the words, "Bravery,' "Discipline," "Courage," and "Love" in classical Maruvian thanks to Naomi's help.
"Wow!" Mateo inhaled, reverently gliding his hands on the smooth cover, "Thank you, Elena."
"I love you." "I love you too." Mateo replied and pulled her closer for another kiss.
"Whatcha doing?" Flo sing-songed, leaping onto Elena's shoulder with a roguish smile, causing the two to reluctantly pull apart to see Armando's fluster face as he left a plate of pan dulce on the discarded blanket.
“So shall we start the meditation again?" Elena teased, snuggling close to Mateo's side, popping a pan dulce in her mouth as Flo eagerly chowed down.
"Elena!" Mateo cried indignantly, "It's our anniversary, this isn't no ordinary day."
Elena laughed as she recalled her thoughts minutes ago, "What do you suggest?'
"I know the perfect way to clear our minds" Mateo smiled and leaned for another blissful kiss.

you flicker like a florescent light || elaomi
@someonespecial-naomi
Word Count: 1996
Date: uhh like a couple days before she told Mateo she's pregnant
tl;dr: Welp. The gargoyles were right. Elena's very much pregnant, despite her refusal.
 TW: discussion of abortion
 ELENA
Elena wasn’t sure what her first thought after finding out she was pregnant was supposed to be. She should have cried with joy. Or had a panic attack. Maybe immediately picked up her phone and called Mateo, told him she had something to tell him after he worked at Greg’s shop today.
Instead, the only thing she said as she numbly crumpled up the blood test results was “Naomi’s going to kill me.”
It was the only thing she could think of as she walked through the door of their apartment, dropping her purse on the dining table with a thud, only barely remembering to grab the crumpled test results from it. Elena really did intend to use her big girl words, but just in case, it didn’t hurt to have it in print, yeah?
“N-Nomes?” Elena called out, voice already shaking.
 NAOMI
Naomi was not a particularly maternal person. She didn’t really want or like kids (aside from Isa, but she was 18 now so she didn’t count), and tended to be a little more blunt with her friends than what would be considered ‘motherly’. She was more like a nagging big sister than anything else.
But the moment she heard Elena’s voice, small and shaking, call out her name, Naomi was running out of her room at a clip which would have made any protective mom jealous.
“Lena?” she called back, racing into the dining room and sighing in relief when she saw that Elena looked relatively unharmed, if a little pale and unsteady. Naomi tugged her into a hug, resting one hand on the back of her head. “I’m here, baby. What’s wrong?” she asked softly.
 ELENA
Elena had a whole speech planned. She really did. That speech went out the window the second Naomi pulled her into her arms and made her feel so safe that she just let the tears well up in her eyes.
“Naomi, I’m stupid. I’m so— so stupid.” She said, burying her face in her shoulder. “I’m so stupid.”
The blood test results audibly crinkled as Elena’s grip on it tightened.
 NAOMI
“No you are not,” Naomi said automatically, though not insincerely. Elena was one of the smartest people Naomi knew - barring anyone over 100 years old, Goliath. It wasn’t her fault God had nerfed her high-intellegence build with a low-charisma stat.
(... Yes, Maru was getting her into DnD podcasts. Yes, Naomi’s annoyed about it too.)
“What happened?” she asked as she began to gently stroke Elena’s hair. “Take a deep breath, I’m right here. I’ve got you.”
 ELENA
Elena shook her head against Naomi’s shoulder and let out a quiet groan. Naomi wouldn’t be saying that for very long.
“I-I-I-” she gripped the papers harder. “You were right. After last time I should’ve-” gotten an IUD. But she couldn’t get those words out. Instead, she pulled away from Naomi and held out the blood test results that clearly spelled it out.
Naomi was wrong, for the first time ever. Elena was very, very stupid.
 NAOMI
'After last time'? What the hell did that mean? Naomi was about to ask when Elena stepped away from her and held out a sheet of paper.
"What is…." she started, taking the paper and looking it over quickly to try and figure out what it was. Her eyes got stuck on the letterhead in the upper left corner, displaying the name of a testing lab. What the hell??
Naomi read over the page slower this time, and her furrowed brows shot straight up into her hairline. She looked at Elena. Looked back at the paper. Back at Elena.
Naomi wasn't sure what her first thought should be when she found out her best friend was pregnant, but what it ended up being was "Esteban is going to kill us" quickly followed by "At least Mateo isn't missing this time".
She took a slow breath and let it out as she set the paper facedown on the kitchen counter, and turned to Elena once again with open arms. "Come here, Lena," she said gently.
 ELENA
Elena didn’t know what she’d expected. Maybe for Naomi to smack her for being so stupid, which she deep down knew she never would. Naomi loved her too much, she was too good a friend, a sister, a protector, to handle it with anything but love and support. And too easily Elena folded into her arms and wept into her chest.
Stupid, stupid! She should have been more careful, and because she wasn’t- god, because she wasn’t, she had a whole new and terrifying layer of complication to add to everything else.
“What am I supposed to do, Naomi? I can’t be pregnant. I can’t be pregnant.”
 NAOMI
Naomi clung tightly to Elena as the news broke over them like waves on a beach. Pregnant. Elena was pregnant. The heir to Avalor was growing in her best friend’s womb and there was no chance in hell they’d be ready to head back to Avalor within eightish months. There would be no time to flush out all of Shuriki’s spies and supporters, they’d just be putting themselves in more danger.
The Heir to Avalor was going to be born on foreign soil. Fuck, Esteban was going to murder her.
Naomi took a deep breath. “Don’t say can’t,” she said gently. “You are, and that’s okay. We’re here for you. Take a deep breath. We’ll figure this out, Lena, it’s going to be okay.
 Does Mateo know?”
 ELENA
“Fuck no, Mateo doesn’t know.” Elena said, almost like it was ridiculous for Naomi to even ask. “I don’t know if I’m ready to tell him. Or if I want to.”
Elena pulled out of Naomi’s arms just enough to look her in the eye. There was a reason she came to Naomi first, before Mateo, Isa, or Goliath. Mateo would treat her with too much compassion, Isa shouldn’t have to comfort Elena here, and Goliath was too unflappable. Naomi was just right to work this out with.
“Because if- if I decide I don’t want to be pregnant, I’d rather take care of this situation myself. He wouldn’t have to know. It’d only hurt his feelings and make him feel guilty. What do I do, Naomi?”
 NAOMI
Oh, they were doing this discussion then.
Naomi sighed softly through her nose, pulling Elena into her room so they could flop onto the bed and get comfy - grabbing the test sheet as they went. Once they were bundled up nice and cozy, Naomi reached over and gently bopped the top of Elena’s head.
“Okay, first? It’s your body and your choice and all that good stuff, but you need to tell Mateo. You know it’s going to come out eventually - shut up, yes it is, you are terrible with secrets like this - and he’s going to be more hurt if he found out you kept it from him. He’d honor whatever choice you make,” she reassured. “We all will. Anyone who doesn’t will wake up at the bottom of the lake, promise.”
“Second, if you think for a second you have to do this alone, then yes, you are stupid. No matter what you choose, I will be here for you,” Naomi promised, catching Elena’s hand in her own. “I’ll go to the clinic with you. But before we make any decision, let’s get comfortable with reality, shall we?”
She caught Elena’s jaw in her hands gently, bumping their foreheads together with a barely-there grin. “Repeat after me, babe. ‘I am Elena of Avalor, and I am pregnant.’”
 ELENA
Elena leaned into Naomi’s warmth and almost felt like everything was okay. Naomi had always had that effect on her like nothing could touch her if she had her Naomi. It was why Elena always felt so safe even after her parents were assassinated. She had the Royal Guard, sure, but more importantly she had her Gabe, her Naomi, her Mateo, and her gargoyle dad.
But Naomi couldn’t protect her from reality.
“My name is Elena. I’m from Avalor but haven’t been there in...five years. And I’m pregnant, andohhhhhmygod, Naomi. Esteban.”
 NAOMI
"Don't think about it," Naomi instructed. "I will deal with Esteban. Besides, you know once the shock passes he's going to be ecstatic. But we don't have to worry about him until we know what we're doing." If Elena terminated the pregnancy they wouldn't have to tell him at all.
But that was if she did.
"Just relax, breathe," she said gently. "Just take some time to get used to the idea. Then we'll figure out what's next.”
 ELENA
Elena nodded slowly and allowed herself to stay curled up in Naomi’s arms as her heart rate slowed to normal.
“I don’t want to be pregnant.” Elena said plainly. “But the scandal it would cause if it got out that I had an abortion- it’s out of the question. It really is.”
 NAOMI
Naomi scoffed, rolling her eyes. Even thousands of miles away, the upper class citizens of Avalor were a pain in the ass. “Forget them,” she said. “We’re half a world away and I promise I can get you to a clinic without anyone ever knowing you were there.” Naomi wouldn’t be a very good spy otherwise.
“All you need to worry about is what’s best for you. And I guess Mateo, but like, mainly you. Mateo will support you no matter what you choose, you know he will.”
 ELENA
“What’s best for me...is to not be pregnant. But I — I know outwardly Mateo would support my choice, I’m not sure he’d be truly in support of it though.” Elena said. “It’s complicated. And I don’t want to give him something else to feel guilty about.”
Elena was sure she wouldn’t have any post-abortion guilt but Mateo...maybe. She didn’t want to saddle him with that.
“I was going to have— I was going to get pregnant by him when we got home eventually anyway.” She said quietly. “I feel like it’s not necessarily going to be more dangerous if I go through with it. I mean. Maximum danger is already reached. It’s all the same at this point.”
 NAOMI
Would Mateo truly support it? Yes, of course. He adored Elena and would do anything to make her happy. But he’d mourn for sure. Naomi knew he wanted kids. But Elena talking herself into carrying out a pregnancy she wasn’t sure she wanted was giving Naomi secondhand hives.
“It’s not all the same, Lena,” she said gently, trying to validate Elena’s fear without stoking it. “It’s a baby. But no decisions right now. You’ve known for maybe an hour. Please,” Naomi pet back some of Elena’s messy waves of dark hair. “I know you want to have this resolved and neatly tied up twenty minutes ago, but just… take your time. Breathe. Don’t rush this. Give yourself time to get over the shock.”
 ELENA
Elena nodded and squeezed Naomi tighter, as if hugging her impossibly closer could and would fix the elephant on her chest. In a small way maybe it did. She closed her eyes and let herself breathe against Naomi for a long moment.
“I want my mom.” She whispered, the sentiment never one she’d dare say out loud in front of Isa or Goliath. “I want my mom.”
 NAOMI
 Fuckin’ same, babe.
It was a different kind of ache, of loss, but Naomi missed her mom too. Fuck, her mom would have known how to handle this way better than Naomi was. Naisha had this patient, steady energy to her that could calm even the wildest of tides and minds, and Naomi wished not for the first time that she had inherited even a little of her grace.
But nope. Elena was just gonna have to make due with the broken, half-feral shark that the world had dropped into her life.
“I know,” she whispered, gently stroking Elena’s hair. “I know, Lena.”

I’m so happy and nervous that I was able to do the listiners pactption for the Princess Podcast. Nervous even though I finished it that people can’t under me due to my speech issueses. Happy that I’m part of something.
I literally did so many takes and some takes I was just making noises 🤣. But hey now people can hear my voice and it did help me with speaking slowly and clearly.
