when I'm writing arguments between vampires, i think a lot about the way that cats fight. when cats clash over something, they make a lot of noise and a lot of physical gestures at one another. it's really uncommon for them to seriously get into a physical scrap, and extremely unusual to see them begin an altercation with another cat with a physical attack. this is because they know, implicitly, that they can kill one another. cats, being cats themselves, understand that a cat is a very efficient killer. all the vocalising, the hissing, the gutteral moans, the hair-stood-on-end, the jagged postures; all of this is happening in order to attempt to avoid a physical fight. each movement and sound has an implicit meaning. the cat is saying 'hey, remember i can kill you', and the other cat responds 'yeah, remember i can kill you too'.

part of the inspiration for Remnants was walking around a charity shop in my hometown. it was small, stuffy, there wasn't anything I wanted to buy, but there was a tea set which looked almost exactly like the ones my great grandmother used to have on a shelf. there was an old, ugly, heavy alarm clock which ticked so loudly you could hear it from the street outside. there were ugly porcelain cats with oddly human facial features set in dour expressions, with eyes which did the opposite of following you around the room, like they were purposefully avoiding meeting my gaze. there were loads of shirts and shoes of varying age and quality, and then, on a shelf, there was a box of spoons.
Tumblr media
This is not that box of spoons. it's a much fancier one my great grandmother gave me for Christmas the year she turned 97. and i thought of it immediately when i opened the box on the shelf in the charity shop and saw five tarnished silver teaspoons peering up at me, because of these. the box is flocked with impossibly soft blue velvet flocking, and the top is padded silk, which has a proper old fashioned hat pin skewered into it.
by the time my great grandmother gave me these spoons, she was already suffering with dementia, and her only explanation for the gift, and the incompleteness of the set, was that it was well loved and she wanted me to have it.
I polished them up a little as they were very tarnished, and i put the spoons back into their little slots, as they were all askew when they came to me. i pulled out the very sharp hat pin and wondered where it had come from, how long it had lived with this silverware, and who had put it there in the first place.
I found a few pieces by the same silversmith selling online for a decent amount, though all much bigger and fancier than my incomplete little spoon set. I've asked my grandmother, my great aunts and uncle about the spoons and where they came from. they possibly belonged to my great grandmother's mother, making them well over a hundred years old, but the dominant memory everyone has of the spoons is playing with them as children, and as far as they could remember, the hat pin had been in there then, too; they remembered pricking their fingers on it.
to me, the spoons are almost like a little ghost. a tiny piece of a past I'll never fully get to appreciate. I don't even have a full story to pass along about them, just little remnants of several of them, of people who remembered them as part of childhoods in my great grandmother's home.
every single item in that little charity shop was like these spoons. every one holds little fragments of memories. and there they are, sitting on shelves, gathering dust, waiting to get picked up and become a part of someone else's life.

I just remembered a fight that happens in ELMM canon around Volume 5 that I completely forgot I wanted to happen.
Eira vs Nera.
Because when Eira finally manages to escape from home, she doesn't know what has happened to Laurel in Volume 4 until she gets back to Atlas Academy (Perle took her scroll cutting off all contact from everyone Eira knew).
And oh boy. She will want revenge.

This show is getting a much larger fandom and that's really exciting!! If you're new here, here's some stuff you may wanna know!!
this blog is generally SFW, though occasionally a bit blood-heavy. it's a vampire show idk what to tell you.
the show, Not Quite Dead, is NSFW. like by all means go ahead if you want to take that risk, but ye hath been warned. these vampires bite for work and pleasure. they hunger. they yearn. they cannot keep it in their pants.
this blog is run by the actual creator of Not Quite Dead, Eira Major (it is pronounced 'ay-rah', and it is the Welsh word for snow)
I am the only writer and editor and I play both Alfie and Neige
ask box is open! please be polite but feel free to scream! I like replying and will if I can or have time, but I don't always and sometimes your question may have Plot attached to it so I simply can't answer. I LOVE getting asks though so pls know they are appreciated even if I cannot reply <3
I regularly check the tags #not quite dead and #nqd because I love fan art and people yelling about the show, and I will grab things from these tags fairly regularly and reblog them here!! if you don't want me to reblog, please write something in the tags letting me know, and if there's a post you don't want me to see, tag it #not for eira and i will not look at it
That's all folks!! Thanks for hanging out and for listening to my gay vampire show. If you're thinking 'sorry what gay vampire show', this post may give you an idea if it's the show for you.
This show awakens things in people. This is good actually. Be a freak. I love you.

Oh my god!! Today, a whole three years after it finished, Clockwork Bird has hit 100,000 downloads!!
Tumblr media
As my first ever show, it's a bit rough and ready, but I'm so delighted it has continued to have a dedicated little audience ever since its release in 2020-2021.
Although its growth has been slow and it's younger sibling SBR is now five times its size, I couldn't be prouder of this show, or more grateful for the people who engage with it. Making this show was a real journey. I sort of started making audio dramas simultaneous with starting to listen to them. It was lockdown, I couldn't find an agent for my novel, I was desperate to share my stories, and audio drama was the perfect medium. It's a unique and fascinating medium for storytelling which has so much to offer.
I'm so delighted that the audio drama space exists and that it has been a place where my stories have flourished and thrived and found excited, engaged audiences. I'm honoured to see developments in this space and meet storytellers pushing its boundaries. As this creative medium matures, I'm excited to see how new and experienced storytellers alike develop the format and use it to shape the stories they want to tell. It's such an exciting thing to be involved in, and to have been involved in over the last few years.
There will doubtless be more Feelings on Main in the next few days as SBR and NQD are BOTH poised to hit exciting milestones too.
I hope you all have a lovely rest of your day, and remember, folks: be a freak. I love you <3

writing this show has a particular kind of energy to it. each time i'm showing up and making thes POV characters and the focalisation is very, very close to those characters; the idea behind the stories is that our perspective can entirely shape the wasy that events appear to unfold. if I've done my job right here, there will be times where you'll see the same event happening and it won't be until afterwards that you realise.
i've thought a lot about the idea that a different version of each of us exists in the minds of everyone we interact with. each episodes paints a picture of a specific character, yes, but within that picture are renderings of other people, even messier and more incomplete from the person whose perspective we see them from. but the observer is certain. their gaze is, to them, fact.

While I realise that the writers wouldn't want their Lore pages to give away everything they want to reveal within the show itself, I would like to ask if the world building around 'extinct' covens with Irish associations will be addressed in some way. With no offense intended towards the extinction of the Great Auk species, I'm not sure that's the first association someone will think of when they see that Beithe Coven [whose name uses an Ogham letter] has an extinction year just a few years before The Great Famine. (AKA the Irish Potato Famine, which is much more well known than a specie extinction year.) Dagga Coven has a name that's similar to the Dagda [a king in Irish mythology associated with magic and druidry], and it's extinction year is one year off from the extinction of the Eurasian Wolf in Ireland. I don't want the writers to think this is an attack of some sort. I can understand not wanting to try to present any current Irish magic users as being forced to remain within this UK focused system. It's more a matter of how 'extinct' covens function, really. Does an 'extinct' Irish coven mean that there are no Irish magic users in the current day? Or does it mean that Irish magic users never joined the alliance (and are doing their own thing instead)?
These are very interesting questions!
I'll do my best to answer them. I'll start by saying that the Alliance is a strictly British institution, and magic users in this world exist and thrive outside of it. The Alliance and the way it runs and controls information, such as about the loss of theses covens is not necessarily a good system. It should invite criticism.
There are no Irish covens in the Alliance because I do not feel personally comfortable writing Irish people into this system which mirrors the United Kingdom. From my research, it also seems that Ireland was impacted by the proximity of the Roman Empire through their occupation of Britain in a really complicated way that's massively distinct from what was happening in Britain at the time, which is significant for important Story Reasons. This provides me with an in-world explanation for there not being Irish covens in the Alliance, as it means covens in Ireland would be far less likely to become a part of the Alliance at its formation as its formation had so much to do with the specific impact of Roman occupation on Britain.
I am a Welsh person, my only ties to Ireland are ancestral, and through a fascination with folklore and the connections between different Celtic countries. Specifically in Twelvelms I'm trying to write about the marginalisation of Celtic identities in the UK as it relates to my personal complicated feelings about the place where I grew up.
Beithe was a coven in the Irish sea between Anglesey in Wales and Ireland. It would be primarily Welsh, culturally, but heavily influenced by Ireland due its proximity. I've chosen to change the name to Bedwen to soften this association with Ireland, as I don't want to associate the loss of this coven with the Potato Famine. If the association was strong enough for you to make a connection there as it stood, I'd like to specifically avoid that moving forward.
I hadn't previously made the connection between Coven Dagga's name with the Dagda! Their names probably share a root origin, in Proto-Celtic word 'dagos', which seems possible! 'Dagos' is a reconstructed word which would roughly mean 'that which is good', and is the grandfather to the Welsh word for good, 'da', as well as the Old Irish 'dag' and 'deg', and the modern Irish 'dea-' and 'deagh-' prefixes. 'Dagga' is a potential origin of the word 'dogwood', which is this Coven's sacred tree. The date of this coven's loss being associated with the last sighting of a wolf in Ireland is not an accident. For story reasons I won't be getting into this deeply right now.
I also won't be fully discussing the way the extinct covens become relevant to the story more broadly, but I will say that access to information and who controls it is an important in the story's world.
I will mention in addition to all of this that there are mages who are part of the Alliance who live in Northern Ireland who are part of some of the covens of the Alliance, who do have their own purlieus (closed of magical communities that the Alliance likes its mages to live in). One of the main four characters, Reilly, grew up outside of the Alliance's strictly managed Purlieus with her father, a Northern Irish Derwen mage, and her mother, who is an umage from just outside of Belfast. Reilly moved to Coven Derwen's central purlieu, Deva, to live with the leader of her coven when she turned 13, which is common practice for half-mages. And should definitely be raising red flags about the Alliance.
Thanks for these questions! They were really thoughtful.

Can I… make Pers a hat? I need to *sighs* take my mind off somethings. -Eira
Freminet looked at Pers for a moment. Sure, the penguin already had a hat—but it was detachable anyway.
"... Of course," he nodded. "Um... Do you need to take Pers with you? For... measurements, or anything?"
