I am just. SO fascinated by the core theme of dreams in One Piece as it pertains to Usopp. Everyone else has a dream that’s like…either very specific as a goal, very ambitious, or both (some at different levels of quantifiable than others). But Usopp’s simultaneously so simple and so unquantifiable. It’s not a hyperbole, like “bravest warrior of the sea”, for example. It’s just “brave warrior of the sea”. So straightforward. But like, how do you even declare that completed? At which point does Usopp look at himself and go: dream achieved! Because in that case, he’s already achieved it. He achieved it the second he stepped on the merry. He achieved it the second he was terrified scared during a fight and stayed to fight anyway. He achieved it the second he decided to fight everyone he loved because he thought they gave up on their ship. He achieved it the second he put on a mask and pretended to be someone else to be a hero.

The existence of Sogeking is so telling about this because like. He invents a persona in order to be a warrior and feel worthy enough to fight. But that’s still him under there. It seems like Luffy and Chopper aren’t the only ones fooled by the Sogeking persona, Usopp himself believes to an extent that that’s another guy, that’s the brave warrior of the sea he wants to be. But it’s still him!

So like. His journey is less about achieving the dream. It’s more about realizing that he’s already achieved it.

In a way I think the fact that “Sam is a class traitor because he went to college” discourse remains is fascinating bc to me it’s a symptom of taking what Stanford represented in the narrative completely unchallenged. Like going with the Winchester Head Of Family bottom line that Leaving is Selfish and Staying Together is the Most Important Thing very much drives this kind of thinking to me. I can’t fathom “guy gets into college on a needs based full scholarship” as a sentence that says class traitor of all things otherwise? Like the idea that Sam wanted to go to college to improve his life because he’s a snob rather than he was literally raised a child soldier and wanted better options is wild right?

cross posting a thread from twitter where I rambled about my ghoap family au: thinking of johnny bringing sammy on base for lunch with simon and when they show up simon is not in his office, he’s still out on the drill pad scaring the shit out of recruits. ghost notices the recruits’ attention goes to somewhere to his right and that’s about all the warning he has before sammy flings herself at his leg, clinging to the camo as she stares up with a wide toothy grin. it’s not the first time and wont be the last sammy sees of Ghost. she is far from scared of the mask. she happily babbles and reaches up, asking to be picked up. it’s also not the first time ghost had sammy out here with him, the last time she was strapped to his chest, and as such he scoops her up, resting her on his hip, before turning to bark more orders at the poor recruits. Sammy happily joins in giving orders, demanding one particular recruit sing the Incy Wincy Spider and do the dance. He hesitated and looked to Ghost for some direction who just glared down at him “You heard the lady,” he growled out. The recruit shrunk back some before complying.
