As an addendum to this, I think the pressure I feel to write something truly original instead of a genderbent xyz is also because I feel like… I feel like we do need to make an effort to move away from franchises in order to really get more female character led work in the long run? Like, I could just genderbend Naruto, but I feel like it would then run into an issue that we already had back the big thing was making genderbent versions of beloved xyz media properties (the Ghostbusters/Ocean’s 11/were there any more? type thing). Where people will inevitably keep comparing your thing to what came before, because by the nature of what it is it is an extension of what came before, and so it will have to be really radically different if it were to have the hopes of truly standing out. Which in a way, feels like admitting that this genre does belong to Shonen Jump. Which I know is ridiculous, but like, is it?

People do talk about Shonen as if it’s something that can only really happen in the realm of Shonen Jump. They talk about that genre of silly specfic action adventure series as if it’s limited to the realms of television networks and recognisable brands. Which like, I guess it’s just easy shorthand. (It is totally easy shorthand; I’m not immune to using franchise terms as easy shorthand either.) But I think if we really want to walk away from the conditions which does produce poorly written female characters in these works time and time again. If we want to get out of, and fight against, these patriarchal capitalist imperialist systems, we will first need to know that we do not need them.

Like yeah, there’s the fact that most people are uninterested in reading ripoffs. (And that would be what I will be doing if I were to write Edwina Elric’s story; it’s not official FMA media, which will make it a ripoff). But also, why do we need to abide by these old stories time and time again? We can take inspiration from them. We can respect them (or disrespect them!) for what they are. But like, I think we do need to try and also do something new with the genre they codified too. Changing this mindset will be healthy I think. Less “she deserved better”s and “we can only hope that someday the creative team behind these works won’t disappoint us”. And instead more… making what we hope to see regardless of what those higher ups think.

“rise and shine, sweet thing.”

A sleepy grumble is the only response for a second, and Edwina nuzzles deeper into her pillows. “No rising, no shining,” she mumbles. “Too early.” 

“I brought coffee and breakfast,” Ryan tries, and that does perk her up a bit. She opens one eye to peer at him, and it’s so un-fucking-fair that he looks so damn good even this early in the morning. 

But then again, he is all hers, so she supposes it’s not so bad. 

“Counter offer,” she says, the curve of her smile half hidden by pillows. “You get back in bed with me, and I make it worth your while.” 

“Mm, tempting. What if you get up and have breakfast like a good girl and then I make it worth your while.” 

There’s something about the way he says it that makes her shiver, and she’s already sitting up in the bed. “You drive a hard bargain, Hawkeye.” 

“I do my best, Ms. Elric.” 

“Ugh, don’t call me that.” 

Ryan laughs and leans down to kiss her, fingers threading through her hair. “I’ll call you better things once you’re up.” He tugs her hair lightly as he pulls away. “Be good.” 

And honestly, how the fuck is she supposed to resist that?

“Fine, fine. I’m up, I’m up.” 

She smothers a yawn with one hand and squeaks when Ryan swats her ass on her way to the bathroom. 

It’s a good start to the day.
