Idk if I'm the first person to point this out or anything, but Wasp Rick is a trans icon! (slight TW for gore)
Tumblr media
It's pretty interesting, because this scene (where he lays eggs in Hologram Rick's eye) proves that he has an ovipositor! We even see it in action!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is an ovipositor? Well, ovipositors allow for the injection of venom and insertion of eggs into the prey of parasitic wasps! Basically, they're their stingers.
The fact that all of the babies are tiny Wasp Rick clones means that his species is seemingly capable of two-partner sexual reproduction (since we see Wasp Beth and the Wasp Smith children!) AND parthenogenesis! (Parthenogenesis is a method of reproduction through the development of gametes without fertilization).
Tumblr media
What's so cool about this though? It means that Wasp Rick is (probably) trans! Parthenogenesis only occurs through the development of female sex cells; he can lay eggs; and he has an ovipositor, which male wasps don't have!
Pretty rad trans grandpa!
Tumblr media
(Sure, I'll acknowledge the possibility that this humanoid wasp species could have males organically capable of laying eggs/parthenogenesis, or that Wasp Rick genetically engineered this as some sort of bio/cybernetic enhancement, but let me have fun.)

Day in Fandom History: November 10…
An adventure to collect some “death crystals” over at Forbodulon Prime goes downhill with Morty taking one of the crystals, which decides his fate in multiple ways, as Rick comes back to life after being shot by his grandson, but keeps on popping up in different dimensions. The first episode of Season 4, “Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Repeat”, premiered on this day, 3 Years Ago.

The season premieres of Rick and Morty’s second and third seasons were unique in that they followed cliffhanger finales, so—even if the second season’s didn’t turn out all that great—those premieres felt like epic reintroductions to the show’s world that had to get the characters out of a previously-established sci-fi pickle (not a literal one this time) in a way that was satisfying and cool. The series stopped doing season cliffhangers after that, so the season four premiere was just more Rick and Morty and the season five premiere is much the same. In fact, “Mort Dinner Rick Andre” even echoes “Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Repeat” with a plot to do with time, Morty’s forever-crush Jessica, and the idea that—no matter the permutation of sci-fi circumstances—Morty is doomed to forever be, at best, friendzoned...

I know Seasons 3 and 4 are notorious for Rick being at his worst, and considering what he made himself relive in hindsight I totally understand why he was triggered to go back to being an abusive nihilistic brute.
Coupling that with the fact that he abandoned the Prime/Cronenberg Dimension means that ‘Rick Potion #9’ probably serves a double meaning in full context. He was forced to ‘give up’ the hunt for Prime and actually focus on being a person. After that, I suspect that the flashback in ‘The Rickshank Redemption’ was a way of guilting himself. He doesn’t have the Diane AI around anymore, so having that partially fabricated memory was a great way to have his wife come back from the dead to haunt him again.
Tumblr media
All of that without even mentioning that he watched his best friend/unrequited love nearly die in front of him AND witnessed that gut wrenching confrontation between Beth, Jerry, and the kids on Tiny Planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That being said, boy do a lot of people underestimate the sheer optimism that Season 4 sets up for Rick’s character progression.
I’m definitely not saying that Season 4 doesn’t have its moments of Rick crossing the line. The ending of ‘Rattlestar Ricklactica’ makes me nauseous and ‘The Vat of Acid Episode’ is infamous for the psychological torment he puts Morty through.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the same time, many things in Season 4 make his progression in Seasons 5 and 6 seem gradual and earned. A few that always stick out to me are the ending of ‘Promortyus’ and his arc with the Beths in ‘Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri.’
Tumblr media
In my opinion, Season 3 was when he was at his worst and Season 4 is him beginning to come out of that weird fog– albeit, still shitty.
I mean, look at the ending of ‘Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Repeat.’ It’s a dark episode, sure, but coming out of Season 3 Morty deserved a little bit of selfishness. (Probably not the copious amount of homicide he ended up committing, but he was going through a lot, so I let it slide.)
For an episode so dark, you almost think that it’s going to be a pretty bleak opener to the season– but the ending is surprisingly… wholesome?
It’s like a cute/positive spin on the ‘Pilot’ and ‘The Rickshank Redemption’ drunken rant endings. Even when it sours, it still shows Rick and Morty on a united front. They’re excited to work together. Instead of Morty being a victim, he feels more like a partner. They excitedly rant together.
Tumblr media
After the ending of Season 6, the optimism of Season 4 feels so disheartening. The vibes are depressingly different if you directly compare the Season 4 premiere and the Season 6 finale.
Tumblr media
I think Season 4 was a great buildup to Rick's current character. Any other way would have felt too rushed, but it incorporates a perfect (and often understated) amount of Rick being soft.

Promortyus sure was something..... I have one thing in particular I did not like so I’m just going to put a cut so y’all don’t have to read it if you don’t want to
So I hated that scene in that episode. I’m assuming ya’ll know the one. It freaked me out and made me feel weird and gross. I hate it a lot and l will NOT be watching that part of the episode again but I’ve thought about it, it isn’t that out of place with all the other incest jokes (I made a list while I was working and there were more than I had originally thought) the show has made before, it’s just really loud. The loudest maybe. And I feel like the intent was that it was supposed to be funny because it isn’t Rick and Morty, it is the face huggers Bruce and Steve, while messing with the audience because they look and sound like them and the writers of this show love throwing things in fans faces that they think they want. I think the intent was to make fun of the ship while not actually having the characters do anything but it was not fun for me to watch and even worse for me to hear. Also I think the other part of the joke was that it didn’t happen, Summer had absolutely no way to know what she was telling them was true, it was just something she said to rile them up. Her line, “Everyone at the office knew” made me think... did they Summer? Because that one alien said he was surprised to see them together and asked, “Hey is he bothering you?” making it seem like they actually might have hated each other. Which could be meta commentary on fans thinking Rick and Morty squabbling and name calling is some kinda of.. sexual tension. When it’s really just them arguing. I think the joke was to make fun of how ridiculous the idea of Rick and Morty dating is, but I mean I don’t know for sure. I don’t have any solid answers and maybe never will. But that’s what I think the genuine intent was (and just because that was what I think the intent was... doesn’t mean people won’t misinterpret the scene).
That being said thanks, I hate it.
I appreciate the points being made this season about not giving in to what fans or the network wants. However, I no longer need to be reminded about this particular aspect of the show, or the fandom as I was told in series pilot, I was told in Rick Potion #9, I was told again in The Edge of ToMorty: Rick, Die, Repeat!, and reminded again here that the boys do not and will not have romantic feelings for each other. Which is great! Feel free to no longer remind me. While I can do jokes about it (again there are quite a few throughout the series) I do not ship them for multiple reasons and I don’t want the show to lean into this going forward. I hope to never see anything more explicit than this on the topic.
Now that I think I’ve made myself clear on that particular aspect, I really wish I could just cut that scene out of an episode that I otherwise really enjoyed.

OMG you guys, so I’m finally getting caught up on season 4 of Rick and Morty, and in the episode “Edge of Tomorty: Rick, Die, Repeat” (S04 E01) there’s a Coco reference! 🤩 This is the first and only reference to Coco I have seen in a TV show, and all I have to say is, about freaking time!
