Izzy and Fang as externalizations of Ed's violence; and how Ed plays Frenchie like a lute (or a harpsicord)

The fire killed those people.

Sure, Ed. Whatever lets you sleep at night.

When there isn't a handy fire around, Fang seems to be Ed's go-to for enacting violence on the world outside his crew. He has Fang skin the French captain with the snail fork, and Fang acts like it's just another Tuesday.

Izzy is Ed's go-to to enact his violence on the crew. Izzy is Ed's Bad Cop. There's plentiful on-screen evidence that Izzy revels in the role, don't feel I need to detail it.

I saw a take earlier that I kind of liked, about Jim's response to Ed asking them about the vibe on the ship. OP noted the resignation and barely repressed rage and resentment in Jim's face, voice, and body language. And that Jim moved slightly in front of Archie. Tons of info conveyed in a single beat. Great acting, I agree.

I didn't repost, though, because OP finished by saying that Jim saw that Ed had moved from "troubled" to "just a bully." And I fundamentally disagree with that.

Ed moved from being troubled and distant to being troubled and an active threat.

We saw Ed do this at the end of season 1. He sent Izzy out to shout and rave at the crew while he stayed in the cabin and cried. When Ed appeared in person, shit went down. Jim's boyfriend got marooned, and Jim got coshed. Jim knows what's up.

At the start of season 2, Ed's still staying in the cabin and sulking, and sending Izzy out to keep the crew in line. The crew know he's troubled by his demeanor during raids, the unrelenting pace he's setting, and the continued disappearance of Izzy's toes. Ed is still distant, Izzy is still enforcing.

Ed shows up on deck and Jim and Frenchie, at least, know that this spells Big Trouble. Izzy hasn't been externalizing Ed's violence to Ed's satisfaction, so Ed comes out to do it himself. Jim moves to protect Archie. Frenchie shakes his head at Izzy in an effort to keep him from getting himself shot in (shooting himself in) the knee (foot).

And then Ed chooses Frenchie as his new first mate.

It can't be Archie, because Archie is new. It can't be Fang, because Fang already has a role (and a longstanding relationship with Izzy). It can't be Jim, despite their literacy (unclear if Ed knows) and their best ability among the crew to pass (Izzy was also Ed's white-guy emissary to the outside world that he sent when he wanted to impress, see S1e3), because Ed doesn't trust Jim not to kill Izzy on his orders (more on that in a second).

Frenchie it is.

And yes, Ed and Frenchie had a budding friendship (S1e5, S1e10) before Izzy pushed Ed into his current state (S1e10, as the Izzy woobifiers always forget). And yes, Ed knows about Frenchie's fearsome street smarts and ability to play the aristocracy (S1e5).

Ed also knows that Frenchie's survival strategy relies on manipulation and lies, and I think he's pretty sure Frenchie will not kill Izzy.

When Ed asks Frenchie how he killed Izzy, he knows he's backing Frenchie into a corner. He knows he'll catch him out one way or another. Because when Frenchie is backed into a corner, he squirms, and looks to give the answer the threat wants to hear. And Ed knows this. Frenchie actually is right-handed, we see it throughout season 1. It doesn't matter. Ed just needed Frenchie to squirm so that he could pull out his reveal. Ed is such a theatre kid, even when he's actively suicidal.

Ed plays Frenchie like a lute. Or a harpsicord. Could be a lute. I can do anything.

I still want Ed and Frenchie to be besties in the end.

Thinking about Frenchie saving and hiding Izzy at great risk to himself. About Jim and Archie helping Izzy after getting shot by Blackbeard. About Frenchie using Izzy’s thigh as a pillow when they’re in prison awaiting death. They’re a crew. A family. They love each other.

the fact that they use the figurehead izzy defaced for "not doing its job" to instead give him his purpose and identity back. the fact that figureheads were historically not only fixtures of stature and power but also, to their crews, "the eyes of the ship guiding them safely home". the fact that izzy protected the goth crew from a lot of edward's spiraling ire physically, the fact that when izzy was presumed gone and dead the ship was steered and then moored in a storm. the fact that without his intervention they would have likely died in that storm, but instead afterwards were able to be come across by the other half of their crew and brought "home". you see the vision, don't you?

it also caught me so off guard in episode 1 in particular that the crew clearly knew how much izzy was doing to protect them from ed?? no one's saying it out loud because it won't help but the hug, and the whole scene surrounding it, says they've all quietly been paying attention and worrying about him behind his back and it was a culmination of weeks and months of living like they were while knowing that izzy was bending over backwards to absorb as much of ed's rage and heartbreak and anger as possible in order to shield the rest of them??? help??
