Can Weird Things be Used as Binder in Concrete?
In the quest to enhance the strength and durability of concrete, researchers and engineers often experiment with a myriad of unconventional materials. The idea is to explore whether these “weird” substances can function effectively as binders, the crucial ingredient that holds concrete together. This article delves into the fascinating realm of concrete science, examining the potential of various…

We all know that Steve isn't big on reading, possibly because of all the head trauma. Eddie is the opposite, he basically lives in books. Sometimes he reads to Steve before sleep, or when Steve cooks, bakes, anything that requires his focus. Even when audiobooks become a thing, he says he can't fully focus on a book unless it's in Eddie's voice. That might be a lie, but Eddie never tries to disprove it.
What Eddie does, however, is note down interesting quotes from the books he reads. He scribbles them onto sticky notes in his messy handwriting and then leaves them for Steve to find - in his pockets, on the fridge, in Steve's favorite coffee mug.
Sometimes they are short. Sometimes they take up several sticky notes. But there is always an addition from Eddie, something to make it personal.
"What is love? There is nothing in the world, neither man nor Devil nor any thing, that I hold as suspect as love, for it penetrates the soul more than any other thing. Nothing exists that so fills and binds the heart as love does. Therefore, unless you have those weapons that subdue it, the soul plunges through love into an immense abyss." - The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco. Made me think of you.
"He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same." - Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë. Shows that music taste doesn't reside in the soul, don't you think, big boy?
“I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.” – The Fellowship of the Ring, J. R. R. Tolkien. I've read this so many times, but I only get it now, Stevie. You made it make sense.
Of course, there are funny ones too, inspirational ones, but the ones about the two of them are Steve's favorite. He keeps all the sticky notes organized in a binder, with dates and maybe even snippets of the books when he attempts to read them. He rarely finishes any of them, but Eddie finds himself not caring about it anymore. The moments reading for Steve are sacred and he often throws the party out of the kitchen when Steve bakes. Well, sometimes with the exception of Will and El, those two are always welcome to their quality book time.
As Steve bakes snacks for the latest Hellfire campaign and Eddie's voice carries him to a different world full of adventure, knights and doomed romances, Steve stops him from time to time. "Um, could you- oh fuck, wait a second, I don't want this to burn..."
And before he finishes saving the pastries, there is a sticky note ready for him, with a small note: for my cute pastry savior.
Steve wonders how many binders he'll manage to fill during their life together. He can't wait to find out.

Bookbinding/Fan binding for beginners by... a beginner PART ONE
SO YOU WANNA BE A FANBINDER EH!?
RIGHT! so it felt like maybe it might be sorta kinda helpful to put something about a 'how to do the thing' together. Buckle in this is going to be a ride and a half. Edit as of November 16th 2023 The Master List for EVERYTHING is
HERE
SO, first thing is first- if you're fan binding there is a bit of etiquette to follow. But it is just good manners to ask permission to fan bind the fic you're interested in. See if the author has a FAQ available where they state the Yay or the Nay. Submit a DM or a comment. But as a note of disclaimer- this is for PERSONAL USE ONLY. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE SOLD ANYWHERE. LOOKING AT YOU ETSY FAN FIC SELLERS THAT CAN GET EVERYONE INTO A FUCK TON OF TROUBLE. That is a breech of fair use laws. Don't breech fair use laws. Don't be a dick.
If you happen to have a EPUB or PDF copy of a fic that has been deleted and you wish to bind it or if you receive no response to the author in question, nod your head, know that you did your best and proceed on with the project and make your fic to put on your shelf. Sleep well knowing you did your best and you can do nothing else.
But if you receive a Nay- don't be a dick honour the author's choice and plop the fic on your ereader and call it good.
Now that we got that all out of the way. ONWARD!
MATERIALS! Musts: (The optional materials will be marked as "OP") Access to a Word processor Printer with duplex printing (It prints on both sides of the page) Fic Printer Paper- regular printer paper is FINE if you're being budget conscious. But if you'd like to splurge:
Hammermill Copy Paper But the Most bang for your buck is Church's Paper
Please note: These are US based links, and I am going from what and where I am located you might have to go to a local paper shop. If you want your book to feel very book-like see if your paper shop can take 11 x 17 paper and cut it in half for you which yields 8.5 x 11 paper on the short grain (paper has a grain there is a stiff side and a floppy side, much like fabric, by cutting the paper in half it makes it more 'floppy' and thus more book like)
a punch cradle I use one made by HoneyMinCo - or some sort of punch guide
Awl
Glue- Elmer's Glue All, Tacky, Lineco , PH Neutral all will do what you need it to do
Waxed linen thread
Curved Needles
Book press- you can make these for cheap with wooden cutting boards, bolts and wing nuts.
A brush you don't mind getting glue all over or you can use a silicone face mask brush like this hell I even use my fingers at times
box cutter or any sort of cutting tool, rotary tool
scissors
metal rulers help
spacers (Not necessary but helpful to have you can also DIY this for cheap) OP
Davy Board/Chip Board/Book Board AKA dense AF cardboard
and some sort of thick paper- like a cardstock
bone folder - butter knives also work in a pinch
Recommendations:
For Printers- Epson ECO Tanks are the best bang for your your buck ink wise and has duplex printing. Inkjet and colour options. Some binders swear by laser printers for speed and the general look for the final product but use what you have. Just make sure you have extra ink on hand.
The upfront costs can be pretty steep but a lot of the materials can be steep but you can get crafty and raid a dollar store and charity shops.
Up Next- How to get a Fic from AO3 to your word processor and how to format a document to get it ready for printing and likely more links, and some people to watch on TikTok or Youtube.
Edit: 11/1/2023:
There is a Fan Binding Starter Kit Found here

how does one go about binding books? it sems so interesting and im just wondering if i ever want to prints fics yk
also picturess
FINALLY SOMEONE ASKING ME ABOUT BOOKBINDING. I have all this knowledge and no one ever asks. I LIVE for bookbinding. I picked up my phone to see this after bookbinding for the past hour.
So: here you go:)  A guide.
*This is specifically for fanfiction, if anyone has any questions about making journals etc. I can answer those too :)
Before we start, here’s a start to finish actually binding it tutorial This Man Must Be Protected At All Costs. We don’t deserve him. He talks you through putting the book together really well.
I’m putting the rest below the cut because I’m nice. (there’s pretty + useful pictures there)
Some Bookbinding language:
Signatures. Signatures are the lil groups of paper u bind with. They’re usually grouped into four UNLESS you’re using water colour paper or cardstock. (Just in case someone reading this knows absolutely nothing about paper, don’t use either of those for your fanfic pages you’ll hate yourself and the final product.) (ignore the ice cube tray in the background, its my paint pallet. Don’t judge me.
Tumblr media
Book Press: A thing used to press the signatures. Mine is so gross and destroyed I refuse to show it, you can make one out of cutting boards.
Bone Folder: yes, it is made out of bone. Yes you can choose to find a plastic or wooden one. I personally have terrible sensory issues when it comes to paper so I need to use one made out of bone. They’re used to fold the signatures.
*You don’t actually need one if you have a book press, cuz the signatures get flattened in there anyways, but your hands will hurt a bit after all the folding if you don’t use one. Or, at least mine do.They look like this.
Tumblr media
Kettle Stitch :This is, in my opinion, the superior binding method for fanfiction. It’s simple, it’s easy to learn, and its great for actually reading cuz the spine is strong but the pages like flip well? That’s hard to describe. The link at the start of this is my favourite tutorial.
Materials & some tips.
Paper: You can use anything. But, beware of the thickness, I use eco recycled paper, which is better for the environment, but you need to be a bit more gentle when actually binding so it doesn’t rip.
A) NYLON thread. Don't come in here with your cotton or polyester thread. Nylon. Is. Superior. It won't break and it's easier to untangle (waxed thread is kind of overrated and expensive)
B) a bone folder and book press: you can really use either or, but if you’re only going to use one, it should be the book press.
C) Board. It’s for the cover. I am begging you, if you are still learning, do not attempt a paperback. You will get severely frustrated. Get yourself some Davey Board or any thick(ish) board of any kind and use that. The tutorial guy will help you with sizing. The trickiest part is the spine, getting it the right size just takes practice.
D) Fabrics: Repeat After Me: Book Cloth Is Stupid. Some book binders hate me rn, but its true and I’ll die there. And then, I show them This:
Tumblr media
Do you see this shit? Not one is book cloth. Look How Pretty Your Books Could Be. The purple one is drapery cloth, theres some cork board ones, and the top two are just thickish cotton. The book industry is just boring and they don’t know how to have fun. Also yes, I know the cork board two look kinda awful, they were the first ones I ever made. Leave them alone they’re doing their best.
E) Glue. PVA Acid Free bookbinding glue is the best option, I recommend getting a one of the really soft paintbrushes from Walmart or whatever cheap and big softer one you can, it just makes spreading it easier. I’m really picky about the glue I use because I’m paranoid. This is the one I get, but It’s expensive, you can honestly use tacky glue and you’ll be fine
D) Curved Needle Please splurge on one. They’re like an extra dollar than one of the straight needles, and you will save yourself so many injuries. Every single tutorial will say “oh, you don’t need one” and they’re Idiots for it. Well I don’t like the feeling of stabbing myself repeatedly, and I’m willing to spend 10 dollars on a Set of 36  so that I’m not just in pain all the time.
Ah, Typesetting. Hell on Earth
You want pretty chapter titles? Get Canva. There’s a free version and she’s lovely.
I, personally, will die before I print from a PDF. That being said, I wish with all my heart and soul that I had microsoft word. Because I use Literal Pages (if you don’t have a mac, you’re confused as fuck. If you do and you’ve had the pleasure of attempting to use pages, yeah. I know. It’s not great but it’s what I have)
Get rid of all your margins. Make sure your title images, if you’re gonna be a fancy canva title bitch like me, are moving with your text. I wish I could help you with a table of contents but I do it by hand aka, insert a table & tracking the pages as I copy paste + “fix up” chapters. *by fix up I mean correct colouring, add the indents, change the font size & type etc. Add italics.
Indents should be 0.5 inches or it looks weird. You can do the pages so they’re the professional wall to wall text, but I cannot stress how much work it is to make sure it copies properly.
Now, if you’re stupid and use pages like me...you have to redo all the italics. Good Luck.
If you want to risk seeing if a PDF works---which it really can go badly if your margins aren’t literally Zero (and even then sometimes PDF adds them which is rude of them) you can, and you won’t have to redo all the italics. It’s your choice and if you find a better way Tell Me.
Specifics:
You want Chapter One to be on Page 7 of the typeset. Again, this might change if you’re not using Pages, but that took me so long to figure out that I need to include it here. Before that there’s the, what I call, The Blank gluing page, another blank for the back of that page, the pretty Image + quote page you open up to, a blank one, Table of contents, Blank, Then, Finally, Chapter one.
You can also do some weird settings for changing the page numbers so Chapter one, aka page one, you “Start a new section” and “start at 1″ Then you can delete the page numbers from the previous 6 pages and you’ll get page one on the actual first page of the book.
Font Size: There’s going to be two pages on one paper, so your font size is going to be 16/17. I prefer 17 because I’m blind.
Here’s a Muse In Secret Typeset as an example that I made one day because I was bored. I don’t know if the Author gave permission for us to print it out or not so I haven’t but I made the type set so I could learn with a decent sized project.
Tumblr media
So that’s kinda what it looks like.
You print it using the “layout--> Booklet” feature. Print in groups of “16″ which is 4 pages, 2 sided.
Now for: Mistakes I’ve Made That You Won’t Have To Make Now
1.You need to use Thick Cardstock or something stronger to do the interior pages.
Tumblr media
It needs to be strong enough that it won’t rip. Don’t be me and think, oh I can use pretty paper, because this happens
Tumblr media
*ALSO, and this is a weird one, A03 for some reason....the text is not black. And hey, you have to highlight everything to change the font size, type, and add indents anyways so you might as well change it to black as well. It makes a big difference.
Other than these basics, the fun is the creativity and figuring it out. It’s okay to switch up fonts & design elaborate chapter titles, and add art and fanart you love. Make it personal to you. It’s why I don’t share my typesets. I put so much work into them and I can appreciate every little detail because of that.
Good Luck Amon!! It’s a really fun hobby, and it doesn’t have to be super expensive. Except for printer ink. I have no solutions for that one.

THIS FABRIC IS MADE OF MILK
Tumblr media
For real! It is 100% milk! The casein protein in waste milk can be turned into a gauzy, finely-textured, silky fabric and treated with antibacterial and antifungal agents to preserve it. It’s an eco-friendly process and the fabric feels absolutely DIVINE.
This is a swatch found in Fabric for Fashions: The Swatch Book (Second Edition) by Clive Hallett and Amanda Johnston, which is an amazing binder full of swatches and annotations on composition, construction, and handling for a whole host of fabric types. The first edition only had chapters for plant fibres and animal fibres but the second edition has a new chapter on man-made fibres, which is where this milk fabric was hanging out, casually waiting to blow my mind.

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 is unfortunately her uncle (she ended up with him AFTER the deaths of her parents when she was 𝟷𝟸) 😒

He chose the rabbit mask becase his father's nickname for him was “𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲” & chose the name “𝐖𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡” for his persona because it was what his mother always called him

heyo idc how late i am i’m throwing in my two cents (i had to retype this entire thing bc tumblrs a dick ; ;)
in terms of binding i’ve only ever used a gc2b binder i got last year, it works fairly well and isn’t the worst feeling, but yeah i’ve heard their quality has really gone down so. underworks isn’t specifically for chest binding, but i’ve heard that it works decently enough for some people. two brands i’ve heard about are ForThem and Spectrum Outfitters, ForThem’s binders are shaped like bras and made with comfortable material, Spectrum’s are eco friendly and more breathable, and they also come with a lot more colors than i’ve seen with other brands. the only issue with both is that for a half tank binder it’s almost 50 USD, and gc2b is only about 30 or so? idk, when it comes to binders try to pick quality over price if you can
in terms of transtape/kt tape, i’ve been meaning to get around to trying it but just haven’t. transtape is probably better since it’s made for trans people but the packaging isn’t really discreet, and i’m pretty sure kt tape works just the same. if you’re looking for alternatives, i use kinesio tex tape for my shitty knees and it works pretty well! the only issue is that there is a residue left when i take it off after a few days but it’s easy to pick off so it’s not a huge deal. make sure if you use tape that you take it off after 3-4 days, don’t just wait for it to fall off or you could give yourself an allergy. (also if you do decide to use tape, no matter what brand please remember to protect your nips with gauze or something! don’t go about putting adhesive on them, it won’t feel good when you need to take it off)
that’s all i’ve got, i hope it helps! (and fuck you tumblr for making me retype the whole thing-)
Fuck you tumblr but thank you for your service of retyping all this anyway!

After lunch, while the rest of the camp is lounging in front of oscillating fans indoors to escape the heat, the senior staff piles into the poorly ventilated living room of Varka’s house. It’s midsummer, and that means staff evaluations.
“Any final thoughts for Bennett?” Jean calls out, to generally positive mumblings. Above them, the ceiling fan creaks laboriously, stirring the hot air into a weak gasp against the sweat on Diluc’s brow.
Jean gets the only decent seat in the room, a moth-eaten armchair, while everyone else crams in around the coffee table and tries not to sweat on one another too much. Diluc could probably snag the chair, he’s the one taking notes after all, but he’s not a monster. Instead he’s shoved into the corner of the sagging loveseat while Keqing tries and fails not to slump into his side, the deflated cushions doing their best to deposit her in his lap. On her other side Ganyu is sitting half on the arm, half on the cushion while she works on a friendship bracelet safety-pinned to her shorts. Aether and Lumine are on the floor with their head counsellor binders open in their laps, Gorou’s perched on one of the rickety kitchen chairs braiding Kokomi’s hair, badly, who’s more occupied with her outtrip planning than the topic of their actual meeting.
“Since he nearly burned down the teepee he’s been on his best behaviour,” Tighnari remarks, not looking up from the materials he’s spread on the floor in front of him; dried leaves and flowers he’s arranging on card stock. Cyno’s leaned up against his shoulder, watching his hands with the kind of luminous attention that makes it impossible to look directly at them. They’ve truly ascended to a new tier of PDA, where even the most innocent of contact looks embarrassingly intimate.
“I saw him with Timmy this morning,” Diluc says. “He seemed really good with him.”
“Oh and Timmy is a total nightmare,” Aether groans, his sister nodding vehemently in agreement. “I’ve never seen such a homesick, wet blanket of a camper. Bennett is working overtime with that kid.”
“Maybe we should rotate him off cabins next session, if it’s that bad,” Jean suggests.
“Yeah, just gotta make sure he doesn’t think it’s a punishment,” Lumine says, wryly.
“What if we—” Keqing begins to say, but is dramatically interrupted by the door slamming open. To be fair, the door is barely hanging on to its hinges so this happens every other time it’s opened, but when Diluc sees who’s in the doorway he can’t help a quiet groan.
Kaeya strolls in with an armload of candy, his stupid over-large aviators precariously balanced on the tip of his nose. “Stopped by the tuck shop,” he announces, unnecessarily, then dumps his spoils on the coffee table. Everyone dives for the candy—hardened gummy worms, dried fruits, knockoff sourpatch kids shaped like broccoli—as if they don’t gorge themselves on it everyday.
Kaeya’s changed since sailing into no-less scandalous jorts and a staff shirt from two summers ago that’s slightly too tight now that he’s apparently a gym rat. The sleeves cut into the flex of his biceps and Diluc looks back to his screen.
“Any other notes for Bennett?” He prompts, tired.
“What’ve you got?” Aether asks around a mouthful of banana chips. Diluc reads out his notes; attentive to campers’ needs, must build confidence in himself, continue to avoid eco activities, great involvement in programming.
“Sounds good to me,” Lumine says, serenely checking Bennett off the list in front of her and moving on to the next name. “What about Razor?”
There’s a momentary pause that feels excruciatingly long. Everyone chews or fans themselves, clearly trying to think of something productive to say.
“He’s a fucking mad lad,” Kaeya says eventually, which is so completely unhelpful Diluc doesn’t even pretend to write it down, just shoots him a dark look. Kaeya leans his hip against the kitchen table, apparently indifferent to its pained shriek and any concept of modesty as he folds his arms across his chest, muscles flexing. He grins like he thinks he just said something funny, which is one of his most insufferable grins by far.
“I caught him eating raw sumac leaves during Survival,” Tighnari says, thoughtfully.
“I’ve had to ask him to stop wrestling with his campers twice,” Aether says, half a sigh.
“Oh, yeah, and he has punch-Jordan in his cabin,” Kaeya says, pointing knowingly at Aether who mimes hanging himself with his braided hair.
“That kid sucks,” Lumine chimes in supportively.
“I heard Razor say he turns his underwear inside out so he can go longer between washes,” Kokomi says, absently, not looking up from the provincial park map spread out before her. Diluc resists the urge to put his head in his hands.
“What! Doesn’t he take his laundry in on his days off?” Jean demands, predictably distraught by this information.
“I’m pretty sure he does,” Aether says, his voice tipping up into a question.
“Did you see his awesome costume for the leadership camp-wide, though?” Gorou interjects, clearly scrambling for something positive to say. But at the same time Ganyu tentatively replies to Aether; “Or is he still just jumping into the lake fully dressed?”
“Doesn’t he shower?” Jean exclaims, and everyone piles on from there. Diluc gives up and closes his laptop. Kaeya catches his eye and grins.
Twenty minutes later, when the bell rings for afternoon activities, the only thing Diluc has written down for Razor’s eval is: Energetic.

“So now you’re a K-popper?”
Newbie
This unexpected preference surprised some of my friends. Here’s the backstory: It all started last year when I discovered DKDKTV on YouTube. I enjoyed their non K-pop videos like vlogs and explanations on anything in South Korea. AFAIK, they’ve never been pretentious. The moment I realized that I’ve seen almost all of them (I guess), I started to watch their K-pop reactions as well, then I was more certain I wasn’t a K-popper. Songs from this genre are typically either too cute or too badass, which I think is totally okay but not my cup of tea. Nonetheless, YouTube keeps suggesting me K-pop stuff because of it.
NewJeans
An hour after their debut, YouTube algorithm showed me Attention MV (performance ver). Started by Hyein at the intro, I was smitten with it right away. She resembled Friday Night Plans in appearance and voice at first glance yet still unique. Music-wise, Attention was excellent up until the very end. I then liked this girl group instantly, which is obviously a part of K-pop. They caught my attention! Oh, I only like NewJeans in K-pop thus far. Danny Kim recently shared his opinion while hosting DK NEWS, “NewJeans is really providing something that K-pop was missing, which was good clean music that’s easy listening,” and I couldn’t agree more. Furthermore, ADOR released NewJeans fandom app named Phoning a couple days later and I fell in love with every single thing on it easily.
New(s)
I’ve read all the controversies including the latest statement from ADOR. My point is, I enjoyed their songs and visual concepts without sexualizing them— that’s all. I wish that all members are always safe and content.
New EP
What I’ve been waiting for a month has finally arrived. I decided to buy Weverse ver album, considering my unwillingness to pile up more bulky stuff. Apparently, it’s smaller than playing cards, too cute to be true. It consists of greeting card from NewJeans, lyrics book, digital album QR code, and 10 photocards. Weverse audio quality is top-notch! The bass is heavier, but I could hear more details that I wasn’t able to catch from other services. I wish Paramore could release their albums on Weverse, LOL. Unfortunately, I dislike the cover material. I understand the purpose of being eco-friendly (this one has no plastic coat like a paper cup), but knowing that it’s a collectible item, I expect something more durable. Why don’t they use tin case like Butter - BTS? Because of this flimsy cover, I’m thinking about buying a photocard binder or storage box— more plastic, more carbon footprint.

Growing, Processing, and Building with Hempcrete
Tumblr media
"Hempcrete is the eco-friendly building material of the future"
If you’ve been following for a while, you’ve probably heard or read something along the lines of the preceding statement.  And maybe those who haven’t still have questions.  That’s okay!  We’re here to help answer them.
Hemp has been overlooked as a solution for practices that cause significant damage to the environment from industries ranging from clothing to construction.  But nowadays, the number of problems that it offers to solve is becoming too great to ignore.  The idea of building houses with a plant may seem a little far-fetched, but today we’re going to dive into why it’s such a viable idea.
Growing Hemp for Hurd
What is Hemp Hurd?
Hemp Shives, Hemp Hurd, is also derived from the Hemp stalk’s inner woody mass that surfaces once the bast fibre is removed. But wait, doesn’t that make hurd a by-product? Well, even though that is technically true, this low-value agricultural by-product has a lot of practical applications. From being useful in the construction industry to being envisioned as the successor of wood pulp in the paper industry, hemp hurd might just be the next multi-million dollar industry on its own.
You can learn more about Hemp Hurd here!
How To Grow Hemp for Hurd?
First thing’s first, you need to be sure that you choose seeds that have been purpose-bred to increase your crop yield. You also need to make sure that whatever you plant is in compliance with your area’s THC policy or you might just end up losing the entire crop and possibly even face criminal charges. Another consideration would be deciding whether you would prefer planting a seed or a clone.
What’s the difference? First of all, seeds do not necessarily always turn out to be of the same phenotype or quality as their parents. There could be, possibly, more than five different phenotypes resulting from 10 seeds of practically the same variety.
Planting a clone could save you time and money (in the long run) because you’re working with known and stable genetics and so you’re eliminating most of the risk there and then. Make smart and efficient choices.
The next thing to keep in mind is the climate and soil atmosphere of your plant. Hemp grows in a warm environment and a mildly humid soil atmosphere that receives enough rainfall/irrigation to keep its seeds moist.
Harvesting and Processing
Hemp, as a plant, exhibits pretty speedy growth. The crop is usually ready for harvest in 3-4 months after plantation. However, the time may vary if you are growing hemp with a specific harvest in mind. Harvesting timeframes for Hemp Hurd is generally around the same time as hemp fibre, before the last pollen is shed.
The step that follows harvesting hemp is retting, which happens in one of two ways. You either let the dew work its magic, or you flood the field and let your Hemp soak in it for a few days before allowing it to dry. Different microbial actions will separate the enzymes that bind the fibres to the inner woody stalk, enabling you to separate the stem’s hemp bast.
The separation marks the end of the retting process. Once retting is complete, the stalks are dried and crushed in a decorticator. A decorticator is an industrial machine that separates the fibres from the dried stalks and collects hurd separately.
And there you have it! The woody shives are now ready to be stocked up in bales or used..
Mixing and Building
Turning Hemp into hempcrete is a series of steps that requires great precision and attention to detail. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:
Binding Agents
Lime based binders (50% lime, 50% metakaolin) can be used to make Hempcrete, mainly because they absorb water and chemically cure the mixture as it is made. A basic Hempcrete recipe is 4:1:1! 4 parts industrial Hemp Hurd, 1 part lime binder and 1 part water.
However, people also use clay and other unfired binders instead of lime ones, personally vouching for the potential cost savings and other benefits of using them.
Mixing
Hempcrete can be made either by using just your hands or a mortar mixer and usually no other sophisticated equipment is required to do the job.
Almost everyone has a different sequence of adding ingredients. However, the science suggests that dumping the water into the hempcrete mix is the most effective way of adding it. Some people prefer misting the water, but this has shown to be less effective.
The whole process should take around 10 mins. You’ll know that the mix is ready when it is dry enough to retain its shape when packed into a ball yet moist sufficient to crumble when force is added.
Remember, too much water will impact the drying time once it is made into a wall or concrete structure. Once properly mixed and set (usually takes 20-30 mins), your Hempcrete will be ready to use.
Making the Wall out of Hemp
Monolithic Cast Walls
This is one of the most commonly used methods of making Hempcrete walls. Also known as the standard-slip form, this method requires that you “cast” Hempcrete in either wooden or plastic structures and tamp around the edges to secure it in its place. This is somewhat similar to pouring concrete while making a traditional wall. However, we use the term “casting” instead of running when referring to Hempcrete.
The hempcrete will need some time to set, usually a day or two before you can remove the forms and use them for other walls.
Once completed, allow 6-9 weeks (depending on the climate) for your Hempcrete to dry up to 15% moisture content and take its final form.
Hempcrete Blocks
Hempcrete blocks are ready-to-use, non-structural, construction blocks that are lightweight, recyclable and pretty sturdy.
They save you the drying time needed for monolithic walls as they are batch-dried at the production facility; however, bear in mind that they are only used for wall-filling or insulation purposes.
This is because they lack the cohesiveness of monolithic walls, which have no spaces in between and are cast all at once to achieve a seamless consistency.
Spray-on Hempcrete
This spraying hempcrete method involves the use of an industrial spray for wall-making. Yes!
You can simply add hempcrete in a cement mixer and let an industrial sprayer build the hempcrete wall from interior formwork instead of manually adding it layer by layer into the form and working your way to the top.
The main drawback is that this method employs expensive equipment and requires far more practical knowledge of Hempcrete and Hempcrete construction than the traditional method.
Benefits of Building with Hempcrete
Hempcrete can replace conventional construction materials and provide sustainable and environmentally friendly means of fulfilling our housing needs. Hempcrete greatly reduces the need for using toxic building materials and saves you a ton of money during construction.
Here are ten reasons why you should prefer to build with Hempcrete:
Non-Toxic
Affordable
Durable
High Structural Integrity
Insulator
Co2 Absorbent
Moisture Regulator
Mould and Pest Resistant
Recyclable
Fireproof
Hempcrete absorbs Co2 and other irritants in the air while naturally adjusting the room’s humidity and temperature. This breathable material not only gives you a natural, healthy environment but also drastically reduces your heating/cooling costs.
Being diffusive and moisture-absorbent means that Hemp walls are less likely to be infected with moulds, which also directly equates to lesser allergies, chronic respiratory diseases and asthmatic attacks associated with moulds and their airborne spores.
Our planet’s health takes a toll every time we use cement, wood or toxic chemicals for construction purposes. Thus, the sooner we can incorporate Hempcrete in the construction industry, the bigger part we can play in preserving the environment.

Ok so I saw this company on Instagram that sells amazing eco-friendly notebooks that are stronger than paper, waterproof, etc. and they're apparently made from stone. I was like damn what's this material with these cool properties. So I looked at their website and they said they were made from crushed limestone and a “binder" which was like, immediate alarms went off. So I googled limestone paper and this wired article came up and basically said yeah it's 80% calcium carbonate (limestone) and the rest is just HDPE (plastic)
This is how they sell themselves
Tumblr media
Like no shit it's smooth it's just plastic
These notebooks are quite expensive, like $50 for 100 A4 pages. What a scam

The Rise of AAC Block Factories in India: Paving the Way for Sustainable Construction
In the realm of construction, the push towards sustainable and eco-friendly building materials has led to the adoption of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks. In India, a country experiencing massive growth in infrastructure and housing development, AAC blocks have emerged as a popular choice. This is due to their lightweight, thermal insulation, fire resistance, and energy efficiency. The rise of AAC block factories in India not only aligns with the global trend of environmentally conscious construction but also presents unique opportunities and challenges in the Indian context.
Overview of AAC Blocks
AAC blocks are manufactured from natural ingredients including sand, lime, cement, water, and an aerating agent, typically aluminum powder. These components undergo a high-temperature autoclave process which results in the creation of air pockets within the blocks, giving them their lightweight and insulative properties. The final product is a building material that is about one-fifth the weight of traditional concrete, making it easier to handle and transport, while still providing significant structural integrity.
Growth of AAC Block Factories in India
The proliferation of AAC block factories in India can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the Indian government’s initiatives to promote sustainable development have encouraged the construction industry to adopt greener practices. AAC blocks contribute significantly to this by reducing the overall carbon footprint of buildings. They require less energy to manufacture compared to traditional bricks and their lightweight nature reduces emissions related to transportation.
Secondly, the increasing cost of traditional building materials like clay bricks, coupled with environmental regulations restricting clay mining, has made AAC blocks an attractive alternative. Moreover, AAC blocks offer better earthquake resistance, which is crucial in a seismically active country like India.
Manufacturing Process in Indian Context
The manufacturing process in an Indian AAC block factory typically involves several key stages:
Raw Material Preparation: Silica-rich materials and lime are finely ground to produce a homogeneous mixture. Cement acts as a binder while gypsum helps in adjusting the setting time of the concrete.
Batching and Mixing: Ingredients are then batched and mixed with water and an aluminum powder paste which acts as the aerating agent. This mixture forms a slurry that is poured into molds.
Cutting and Curing: Once the slurry sets slightly, it is cut into blocks or panels using wire cuts or saws. These are then cured under heat and pressure in autoclaves for up to 12 hours, which significantly enhances their mechanical properties.
Packaging and Distribution: The finished blocks are packaged and stored in moisture-free conditions before being distributed.
Challenges Facing AAC Block Factories in India
Despite their benefits, AAC block factories in India face several challenges:
Initial Investment: Setting up an AAC block factory requires substantial initial investment, particularly in machinery and technology. This can be a barrier for small to medium enterprises.
Awareness and Adoption: There is still a significant portion of the construction industry in India that relies on traditional materials due to lack of awareness about the benefits of AAC blocks.
Distribution and Logistics: Given their bulk, even though lighter than traditional blocks, AAC blocks require efficient logistics solutions to minimize damage during transport and to reach remote construction sites effectively.
Market Potential and Future Outlook
The market for AAC blocks in India is projected to grow significantly. Urbanization is a key driver of this growth, with cities expanding and new urban centers emerging. The demand for residential and commercial spaces that adhere to newer, stricter building codes favoring energy efficiency and environmental sustainability is expected to rise.
In addition, the Indian government’s focus on affordable housing projects under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) provides a significant opportunity for the expansion of AAC usage. The factory-made quality of AAC blocks ensures consistent performance, which is essential for such large-scale housing projects.
Technological Innovations and Skilled Workforce Development
As AAC block factories grow in number across India, technological advancements play a crucial role in optimizing production efficiency and product quality. Modern AAC factories are increasingly incorporating automation and robotics to streamline various stages of the manufacturing process, from raw material handling to final packaging. This not only increases production capacity but also enhances the consistency of the blocks produced, a critical factor in large-scale construction projects.
Furthermore, the growth of this industry has spurred the need for a skilled workforce capable of operating sophisticated machinery and managing the technical aspects of AAC production. Training programs and partnerships with educational institutions are vital for developing the necessary human resources. Initiatives to train workers not only support the AAC industry but also contribute to job creation, uplifting the socio-economic status of communities around manufacturing sites, thereby fostering a more skilled and economically active population.
Conclusion
AAC block factories in India represent a pivotal shift in the construction landscape, embodying the move towards more sustainable, efficient, and innovative building practices. While challenges remain, the potential for growth and the benefits of adopting AAC blocks are clear. As more stakeholders in the construction industry recognize these benefits, AAC block factories are set to play a crucial role in India’s construction boom, aligning economic growth with environmental sustainability. The future of construction in India, with AAC blocks at the forefront, looks not only promising but also greener and more sustainable.
