Dyer's polypore (phaeolus schweinitzii) is a wonderful mushroom used to create various natural colors for your textile and craft projects. Known as a fantastic 'starter' dye mushroom, it brings a range of deep yellows and toasty browns on protein fibers like wool & silk. By adding iron, you can invite greens and darker shades to expand your natural dye palette. If you are a fungi fanatic with a love of foraging, the dyer's polypore is ready to be picked! This tutorial will show you a stove top method of making dye from this mushroom, as well as the resulting color swatch samples (wool, cotton, bamboo & silk) with alum and ferrous sulfate mordants.

The High Priestess. Art by Joseph Buckley, from The Mushroom Hunter's Tarot.
Here the High Priestess is represented by the Dyer's Polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii). Though a terribly destructive parasite for trees, this mushroom is popular among crafters as it's a natural source of green, yellow, gold and brown dye.
Keywords: Retreat, inner instincts, reflection, hidden talents, insight, things yet to be revealed. Things around you are not what they appear to be.

Here’s the update to the spaghetti dye pot.
Dye used was a dyer’s polypore harvested by yours truly. Yarn is merino single spun. Mordant was vinegar and copper. My mushroom did not disappoint!!!

How to Identify Chicken of the Woods Mushrooms
Originally posted n my website at https://rebeccalexa.com/how-to-identify-chicken-of-the-woods/. Click here to learn more about the How to Identify article series.
Name: Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus spp.), aka sulfur shelf, chicken mushroom (hen of the woods is a different mushroom entirely, Grifola frondosa)
Tumblr media
L. sulphureus
Range and typical habitat(s): There are Laetiporus species found in temperate forests on every continent except Antarctica. They are especially abundant in the Northern hemisphere, particularly North America and Europe. They are saprophytes that feed on dead or injured trees and can cause brown rot as they digest cellulose but leave lignin intact. Most species prefer deciduous trees such as oaks or beeches. However, L. conifericola is an example of a species that colonizes conifers such as spruces and firs.
Tumblr media
Distinguishing physical characteristics (size, colors, overall shapes, detail shapes): I often describe chicken of the woods to my foraging students as looking like a pile of orange and yellow pancakes exploding out of the side of a tree. These are fleshy-looking, shelf-shaped mushrooms that often grow in large stacks or clusters. A particularly large individual shelf may be almost a foot across, and some clusters may be several feet tall. Look closely, and you will notice that these shelves do not have stems but attach directly to the host tree.
Tumblr media
A specimen of L. sulphureus displaying a darker orange with pale orange instead of bright yellow margins.
While the bright sulfur yellow and orange color combination is typical, particularly in well-known chicken of the woods species such as L. sulphureus, there may be significant color variation even within the same species. Some have a deeper orange that’s almost red, while others are a more uniform washed-out orange with little to no yellow, or perhaps cream instead. L. portentosus, which is particularly common in Australia, gets its common name, “white punk”, from its creamy white color with little to no orange. L. persicinus, found in the southeast United States and Caribbean, may have some brown on its shelves as well.
Tumblr media
L. conifericola, displaying the yellow pore surface underneath. RTehan at Mushroom Observer, CCA-SA-3.0
The underside of chicken of the woods tends to be yellow to cream, and while it may appear smooth at first it does have very fine pores. The spores are generally white, though a microscope may be necessary in order to differentiate between very similar species that overlap in range. Most Laetiporus species do not bruise; however, L. persicinus has pores that bruise brown shortly after being damaged.
Younger chicken of the woods tend to have a softer, more rubbery tactile texture (yes, it’s okay to touch mushrooms to see what they feel like.) As they get older, however, they get a tough, woody texture, and cooking them does not make them tender again.
Other organisms it could be confused with and how to tell the difference: Most of the time you’re going to be differentiating among multiple Laetiporus species, in which case location, color and substrate (what kind of tree it’s growing on) are going to be the main factors in identifying down to species level. If you have a microscope and want to look at the spores in detail you’re certainly welcome, but the casual identifier should be able to get by without this.
Tumblr media
Dyer’s polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii)
There are, however, several other shelf-like fungi with which chicken of the woods may be confused if you aren’t looking carefully. Dyer’s polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii) may have some orange on the upper surface, especially when young, but the centers turn an increasingly dark brown as the mushroom matures. It also has a velvety texture that chicken of the woods lacks. It is found primarily on conifers, and the pores bruise brown when damaged. It has a white spore print.
Tumblr media
Woolly velvet polypore (Onnia tomentosa)
The woolly velvet polypore (Onnia tomentosa) is another look-alike. It is generally brown with a white to cream outer margin, but while the lighter brown shades may have a bit of an orange tint, the brown is a giveaway that this is not chicken of the woods. The underside is also brown, rather than white or yellow, and it primarily grows on conifers, especially spruce.
Tumblr media
Pycnoporus cinnabarinus
Pycnoporus cinnabarinus looks very much like a Laetiporus in shape, but is a bright red-orange color on both the top and the underside. It has a drier, less flexible texture as well, and prefers hardwood trees as hosts.
Tumblr media
Climacocystis borealis. Gerhard Koller at Mushroom Observer, CCA-SA-3.0
Climacocystis borealis has a hairy texture on the upper surface, and the color is a rather dull cream, yellow or orange, Underneath the pores are cream to yellow and have a more visible texture than on Laetiporus. It attaches to its host conifer trees with a short stem-like structure.
Tumblr media
Hen of the woods (Grifola frondosa). Patrick Harvey, CCA-SA-3.0
Hen of the woods (Grifola frondosa), also known as maitake, looks something like a burst of grayish-brown feathers or leaves sprouting from the base of a tree. Upon closer inspection the individual caps are much smaller, more delicate and more numerous than in Laetiporus. The pores underneath are often more visible as well. They prefer hardwoods such as oaks.
There are other shelf-shaped mushrooms in the family Fomitopsidaceae that are vaguely similar to Laetiporus species, but all differ in shape and color, among other details. Make sure you look very closely at all colors on both the topside and underside of a given shelf mushroom, check for bruising by cutting or crushing a small part and waiting a half hour, and take a spore print.
Anything else worth mentioning? Laetiporus species are generally considered to be edible, though more commonly eaten species like L. sulphureus have more documentation in this regard than less common species. Its common name comes from the cooked mushroom’s resemblance to cooked chicken meat, and it is often used as a vegetarian meat alternative in recipes.
Care should be taken when consuming any Laetiporus species for the first time, even if you have eaten other species of the genus with no problem. Research each species as though you had never encountered chicken of the woods before, and make sure that species is considered safely edible by current standards.
A small number of people who eat chicken of the woods experience unpleasant symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal upset to swollen lips or mouth and dizziness. This may be due to allergic reactions, so caution is absolutely necessary. Always cook wild mushrooms, including Laetiporus, thoroughly; try a few bites, then wait a couple of days to see if you have any symptoms.

today is day 6 ! so first day out of iso. i tested negative this morning which was surprising. i feel good and not sick so i drove myself out to harvest some dyer’s polypore and got some blackberries, swam a teeny tiny bit in the lake (other people were there and you’re not meant to swim). the spot where i get the polypore is trashed badly now with unmanaged weeds / blackberries / literal trash dumped bc tradies are too stingy to fork out for the tip down the road). lots of rugs (one probably salvageable for resale if i could be bothered). lots of leeches. lots of polypore. in autumn it’ll be flush with pine mushrooms.

So uh I saw a post about ShadowClan have like mushroom related names and out of curiosity I decided to look up what kind of mushrooms can be found in England and like.
List of clan affixes that I think are made possible because of mushrooms found in England: Prince, Pavement, Medusa, Macro, Scaly, Inky, Blushing, Stainer, Spring, Fieldcap, Peel, Snake/skin, Grisette, Death/cap, Amanita, Agaric, Panther/cap, Blusher, Destroying, Angel, Funnel, Jelly, Smoky, Bracket, Bolete, Ascot, Hat, Ruby, Scarletina, Satan, Slippery, Jack, Sepia, Penny, Bun, Summer, Polypore, Bulgar, George, Amethyst, Winter, Dryad, Saddle, Shaggy, Parasol, Trooping, Aniseed, Miller, Inkcap, Club, Webcap, Alfred, Cake, Dapperling, Beef/steak, Velvet, Funeral, Bell, Rust/gill, Cinnamon, Pie, Elfin, Terracotta, Lion (if it's like an au where the cats don't know about lions tigers and leapords), Mane, Parrot, Wax/cap, Jubilee, Hood, Sulphur, Fibre/cap, Widow, Curry, Milk/cap, Fenugreek, Blewit, Dome/cap, Pestle, Mosaic, Fairy, Champignon, Morel, Porcelain, Egg/head, Mottle/gill, Dyers, Maze/gill, Stink/horn, Oyster, Shield, Goblet, Liberty/cap, Butter/cap, Russula, Charcoal, Geranium, Brittle/gill, Earth/ball, Cauliflower, Turkey, Knight, Custard, Truffle, Rose/gill
Would the cats have that many names for all of these species of mushrooms so that all of these names can work? Probably not. Are all of these mushrooms capable of being found in the same general area that the Clans live in? Probably not. But do we really care? Especially when you can have names like Beefsteakpaw or Georgestar?
Honestly I LOVE the idea of breaking up Mush/shroom into a prefix and a suffix, and I've considered using -cap as a suffix. I also have actually used Morel, Button, and Truffle for OCs (Plus Reishi, which I've found growing where I live so I allowed it for a FanClan set locally)
Personally I just filter out plants/fungi that have human names and stories attached to them, because I LOVE warriors-ifying stuff like that. Queen Anne's Lace, for example? I'd adapt the story into being about the first Warrior to discover weaving. They who worked their pads to cracks, leaving a little drop of blood in the center of the flower.
So there wouldn't be a Queenpaw or an Annepaw, but the plant would be called Snowheart's Lace and any cat named Lacepaw would know the story by heart.
Plus, I just have a softness for ShadowClan. I'd love for them to have all these amazing stories for their apprentices. I wonder what they'd think of Rusty, if he joined ShadowClan? They could have named him Rustpaw after rustgill mushrooms! It could have been taken as a good sign.

Clan cat body paint concept
So I came up with this for an AU I've been working on with other people. No one was really into it but I was super enthused and put a lot of thought into it so I refined a few things and now I'm sharing it here.
Text wall under cut. Might also make art for this because I really liked coming up with it.
What if the clan cats wore body paint?
Thunderclan
Very rainbow-y. I like the idea of Thunderclan being colourful but not in the sense they have bright bright colours, more in the sense they have a wide range of earth tones they pick from, it just.. seems very them to me for reasons I can't explain. They also paint themselves with roots and branches or intricate, realistic bolts of lightning. They sometimes combine these ideas, like some cats will have artwork of trees with rainbow or autumn leaves climbing up their fur, or a gradient bolt of lightning 'bursting' from their chest or zipping down their tail or so on.
Messier/excitable apprentices will just shove their paws in dyes and run around sporting rainbow feet, muzzles and tails. Younger cats in general may also have things like saplings which are gradually painted to fully grown plants as they turn warriors. More dedicated cats keep 'growing' these painted plants as they continue to age.
Riverclan
Usually painted with greens and blues and accents of white. They tend to have artwork of fish and bubbling streams, often in combination. Their territory isn't a good source of blue dye however, and they try to stay on good terms with Windclan partly because their main supplier for blue is them (they barter for this, basically).
Apprentices often have fish like minnows and guppies, more show-y designs of higher ranks include things like rivers full of salmon or trout and aquatic plants flowing across the whole flanks of cats.
Windclan
Greens, whites, yellows, pinks and purples. They love to paint flowers down their heads, necks and tails and sometimes have them painted on their backs as well. Swirling patterns are also popular, and maybe on occasion simplified rabbits (I'm thinking something like the folklore art in Watership Down in terms of style here). Buttercups, heather and thistle are all popular designs.
Their territory has a plethora of plants they use for dyes which is how they supply Riverclan with blue dye (my idea here was they have something like dyer's knotweed, but despite Riverclan being where a lot of the river is the plant mainly grows in Windclan territory. Riverclan is very miffed about this /lh).
Shadowclan
Primarily dark colours like black, hunter green and deep purples. They often go for stripes, spots, and other patterns. They especially love to make themselves look 'poisonous' (think painting themselves with black, then polka-dotting lighter colours as if they're a poison dart frog or something). Aside from these poisonous looks though Shadowclan cats don't usually have bright colours and stick to murky palettes.
Sometimes they'll paint polypores onto themselves with attention paid to adding depth and dimension so it looks as if they literally have mushrooms growing on their fur. Moss and lichen are also simpler options.
Skyclan
These cats usually have very pale palettes like sky blue, light yellow and white. They love to have depictions of trees, clouds and types of weather. Modern Skyclan has been quite influenced by Firestar when he was trying to form the clan again, so despite his attempts to teach them just ancient Skyclan culture some of Thunderclan's influence seeped in and now they also like to have rainbow-y colours, though these are more pastel in nature. Sometimes they will mix blacks and blues to make deep night sky paintings of clouds and constellations on themselves (this is maybe more of a leader thing? Or perhaps medicine cats).

christmas was strange. hans got me a dragon plaque and some beautiful yarn. i cried a little because its been a really long time since anyone has paid enough attention to me to get me a present that actually feels meaningful to who i am. i gave him a white sweater and taught him how to dye it with dyers polypore. my grandma sent me more sweets than ill ever eat so ive been handing them off to people slowly. hans and i made latkes and brats and then went to dinner at cals where i felt very anxious. i didnt hear from anyone really except for fen and family. i got a new rug yesterday for really cheap that is patterned as calendula and what i think is larkspur, amaranth and something unidentifiable so far. im feeling mad and hurt and anxious. miranda hasnt spoken to me since el left, and she was acting sort of rudely to me and hans, then we washed some laundry at the house at the same time as her and a bunch of our laundry went missing which means theres a fair chance she stole things from us. all after her big apology about how horrible she felt for abandoning me as a friend and how it was just really important for her to be only talking to r because she needs so much support. i feel tired in every direction from that. depression is creeping in. why do i keep letting people in? why do people mistreat others? ive worked so hard on my trust issues but i keep winding up in the presences of people who seem to intentionally disrespect and disregard me as a real person. even fen these days is really far from me and chooses to prioritize all of their time for everyone else. they were going to come for a visit, which turned shorter because they scheduled a doctors appointment at the same time, which turned even shorter because they decided they were just going to have aine drive them both down. i called it off because i kept saying over and over that i didnt want to hang out with aine i wanted to hang out with fen alone and they werent listening to that. o wont talk to me, shady is out of town but disconnected from me when they are here, el is gone, michael doesnt talk to me because it makes shirely upset, amy is gone or not present when shes here, i hardly ever see or talk to max anymore because hes too busy, nick is always stoned and when i do see him its only for a few minutes before he decides to leave. bg is the only person that hangs out with me these days other than hans. i feel whatever rough precursor to lonely, i feel bitter and reclusive and angry. i am so tired of this pitiable pattern. of course, i can tell myself im complaining about nothing and it doesnt matter, and of course, it doesnt, but these are the only friends consistently in my life- or, as close to consistent as possible. its hard for me to feel like i want to see anyone at all. on top of all that i used a prosthetic with hans last night for the first time. it honestly made me feel more dysphoric than not using anything. he really liked it but i couldnt stop thinking as i was watching that neon blue member swing around that ill never be a real man, ill never have this for real, why would anyone choose to be intimate with me and this over someone with something real. i felt like crying but i didnt. i think its good im having therapy today.
