Prefix: Tansy-
A golden cat.
Tumblr media
Description: tansies are plants in the daisy family that produce yellow flower clusters on upright stalks during mid to late summer. Tansy leaves are grey-green and finely divided like fern fronds. One species, dune tansy, is native to Michigan while another widespread species, common tansy, is an invasive species introduced from Eurasia. They can be distinguished from each other by the size and number of the flowers that the plant produces. Dune tansies have large flowers in small quantities, and common tansies have small flowers in larger quantities. Additionally, common tansies inhabit a variety of habitats including meadows and forest clearings while dune tansies mainly grow on sand dunes along the Great Lakes. The leaves and flowers of the plant can be toxic, but many cultures historically used tansy as an herbal medicine.

2019 Hugo Award finalists announced
Tumblr media
The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.
Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.
I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!
One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."
Congrats to all the nominees!

P20130710-0040—Tanacetum bipinnatum w hoverfly (Allograpta sp)—RPBG-1 by John Rusk Via Flickr: Tanacetum bipinnatum—Dune Tansy. The insect is a hoverfly identified to the genus Allograpta. I am told that pictures of the head and of structures beneath the wing would be required to identify the fly to a species. Aurealis Award Shortlists announced!
It's that time of year again when the Aurealis Awards shortlists are announced. And what shortlists they are this year! (I might be biased — Defying Doomsday and one of the contained stories, "Did We Break the End of the World" by Tansy Rayner Roberts, were shortlisted *does a happy dance*) You can go read the official announcement over on the Aurealis Awards website, but for your reading pleasure I have also reproduced it below, with added links to those books that I've reviewed. Hopefully, by the time the actual award announcements come around I will have added more reviews since a lot of these books are in my TBR. And of course, a big congratulations to all the finalists! Today’s Kiawah Island Photo - Lake Huron Tansy Also called Dune Tansy, these wildflowers usually grow in sand along the Great Lakes. At Kiawah Island, they were purposely planted in the flowerbed of a golf clubhouse along the coast (where they are indeed likely in sand, covered with decorative mulch). At first, I thought these were Yarrow, but several apps ID’d them as Tansy. Interesting, I read where Dune Tansy can grow to 7 feet and if you crush the stalks, they emit an offensive odor. This is another plant that provides erosion control of natural beaches. (at Kiawah Island, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPndmDCHx1M/?utm_medium=tumblr

Perhaps one of America’s most unique homes, the “Dune House” in Atlantic Beach, Florida is built into a grassy hill. Barely rising above ground, the Dune House might be more suited to a hobbit than a human. The property consists of two duplex apartments, and is currently listed for $1.2 million by Tansy Moon of Prudential Network…

As someone who is ND themself and who has friends with “bad” ND disorders, I’m gonna ask neurotypical people to do a few things.
STOP DEMONIZING NEURODIVERGENT DISORDERS LIKE DID, BPD, BD, PSYCHOSIS, ASPD, ETC.
These people are NOT monsters, they are NOT your experiments to test on, they are NOT your hobby. They are living breathing people trying to live the best they can in a neurotypical focused world.
What bothers me the most is that these people are struggling, and then they don’t feel like they can reach out for help because the minute they do, they get demonized for it.
Another thing neurotypical people need to stop doing,
STOP INFANTILIZING PEOPLE WITH ADHD AND AUTISM. We are NOT infants. We are NOT incapable. We are NOT your “soft little baby.” Or some other bullshit.
We too, are people, we are also struggling, but treating us as if we’re incapable of doing anything when we very well could be is beyond insulting.
Neurodivergent people are just that, PEOPLE. Stop treating us otherwise. We just want respect.
Seriously.

2017 Detroit Autorama 65 Years of Show Car History
It’s been 65 years in the making the Meguiar’s Detroit Autorama. Now we find ourselves in downtown Detroit at Cobo Hall celebrating a milestones of sorts with this year’s anniversary of the Autorama.
In so doing the show promoters thought it would be a great idea to have a display on the main floor right near the front door that showed off a number of cars from the history of the Autorama. The cars include the very first Ridler winning ride the Al Berlger’s More Aggravation Hemi-powered dragster with a great deal of drag racing history. Another car of note is the 2002 Ridler winning Grand Master a 1935 Chevy sedan designed and built by Chip Foose and owned by Wes and Bob Rydell of Grand Forks, North Dakota. And one of the sentimental crowd favorites is the 1969 Dodge this is the original Waylon Jennings Original General Lee. Another favorite from the show car circuit back in the day is the 1935 Ford coupe called the Crown Coupe (originally known as the Little Beaver) that won the ISCA Championship not once but twice…a rare and difficult feat. A big hit with everyone but especially youngsters many years ago were the Zingers. These cartoon looking exaggerated builds were handled by Chuck Miller who built four of these Zingers: the Vette, VW, Van and Semi, while Steve Tansy built the dragster and dune buggy. Another custom favorite from back in the day was the 1957 Chevy custom owned by Dave Jenkins who bought the Chevy brand new and then had the Alexander Brothers (Mike and Larry) and Paul Hatton build it. This was back in 1958 and it is still in the same unrestored condition today.
