2019 Hugo Award finalists announced

The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.

Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.

I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!

One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."

Today’s Kiawah Island Photo - Lake Huron Tansy Also called Dune Tansy, these wildflowers usually grow in sand along the Great Lakes. At Kiawah Island, they were purposely planted in the flowerbed of a golf clubhouse along the coast (where they are indeed likely in sand, covered with decorative mulch). At first, I thought these were Yarrow, but several apps ID’d them as Tansy. Interesting, I read where Dune Tansy can grow to 7 feet and if you crush the stalks, they emit an offensive odor. As someone who is ND themself and who has friends with “bad” ND disorders, I’m gonna ask neurotypical people to do a few things.

STOP DEMONIZING NEURODIVERGENT DISORDERS LIKE DID, BPD, BD, PSYCHOSIS, ASPD, ETC.

These people are NOT monsters, they are NOT your experiments to test on, they are NOT your hobby. They are living breathing people trying to live the best they can in a neurotypical focused world.

What bothers me the most is that these people are struggling, and then they don’t feel like they can reach out for help because the minute they do, they get demonized for it.

Another thing neurotypical people need to stop doing,

STOP INFANTILIZING PEOPLE WITH ADHD AND AUTISM. We are NOT infants. We are NOT incapable. We are NOT your “soft little baby.” Or some other bullshit.

We too, are people, we are also struggling, but treating us as if we’re incapable of doing anything when we very well could be is beyond insulting.

Neurodivergent people are just that, PEOPLE. Stop treating us otherwise. We just want respect.

Seriously.
