Via Flickr:
Selaginella bigelovii—Bushy spikemoss. A fern ally and not a moss despite the name, Selaginella bigelovii is found from Sonoma County south to Baja California. It reaches inland to the San Joaquin Valley and the edges of the southern California deserts. The plant is much more common in southern California than in the San Francisco Bay Area. The photo shows an aging plant. S. bigelovii grows at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA

2014-11-15-15.52.59 ZS PMax Heteromeles arbutifolia-1 by John Rusk
Via Flickr:
Heteromeles arbutifolia—Christmas berry. Christmas berry is important as one of the first California plants to gain legal protection. It was subject of a 1920s law aimed at reining in the unrestricted overharvesting of berry-bearing branches during Christmas season. Willis L. Jepson, showing the prejudices of his time, wrote in the _Flora of California_, "In the years of 1911 and 1912 and thereabouts most of the stock for the San Francisco Market came from the region of Tuolumne County. With proper care of the shrubs the quality of the berries as a rule improves as a result of harvest pruning, but the Tuolumne region was so ill-treated by the Italian gatherers that the district ceased for some years to be a source of supply." The plant is in a private garden in Berkeley, CA.

Via Flickr:
Tanacetum bipinnatum—Dune Tansy. The insect is a hoverfly identified to the genus Allograpta. I am told that pictures of the head and of structures beneath the wing would be required to identify the fly to a species. Photo taken at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.

2014-12-21-15.06.17 ZS PMax Cheilanthes covillei by John Rusk
Via Flickr:
Myriopteris covillei (Syn Cheilanthes covellei)—Colville's lip fern. "This fern has green leaves which may be up to 4-pinnate, that is, made up of leaflets that subdivide 3 times, such that the leaflets are layered with overlapping rounded segments. The leaves have a bumpy, cobbled look. The undersides of the leaves have scales which are lengthened outgrowths of the epidermis. Tucked under the scales are the sporangia, which make the spores" (Wikipedia, Cheilanthes covillei.) The frond is from a plant at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA
